Bottom Line:
This is my 3rd straight summer of pounding on this bike and *FOR THE PRICE*, it simply can not be beat-The money I saved on the initial purchase let me upgrade the only two weaknesses that this bike has and I ended up with a ride that I can't fault-I let many people ride it and everyone has the exact same comment "SMOOTH"-Don't believe any of the people slagging this bike off bcz they ALL eventually do mention the awesome warranty service (5yr warranty on the frame alone) that they got from Giant when/if the bike failed (look at the prev review, the bike ddnt even fail and they replaced the guys frame!)-How many other bike manufacturers stand behind their products with 'no questions asked', complete replacements of frames, brakes and shocks?? NONE! Don't get me wrong, this bike IS built down to a price but it's a pretty attractive price (the DS2 and DS3 are even cheaper but have the same frame) and the components really are very good for the money that you're paying-Anyway, if you don't like what you've got, at least you aren't flat broke from the initial purchase and you can just get what you want when you upgrade-I spent $300 on replacing the brakes and shock and now it's only regular maint expenses left to deal with (tires/chain/etc)-It's a great bike for beginners or intermediates that do XC, urban or free riding and even some light DH-This bike is the swiss army knife of bikes-It does it all and hasn't let me down even once since I bought it-I still even have the OE wheels on it-My message to all of the 220+ pound riders on these sites that whine about product failures is to LOSE SOME WEIGHT and stop crying about all the equipment that you break-The answer to your problems is no further away than the digits on the scale in your bathroom-Quit blaming the equipment manufacturers and start noticing the garbage that you knowingly push into your pie hole every morning, noon and night-I can't help but wonder how cheap these bikes could really be if Giant didn't have to constantly be replacing stuff that wilted under your immense bulk??Giant bikes rule!! Five flamin chili's for value and over all performance, without a doubt.

The bike looks good at first and when you first experience it, it gets better. however, after a while the brakes start to squeek the wheels feel weak and the forks need a lot of servicing when the money just isn't worth spending. Upgrade on the frame and then finally upgrade the frame. After all this you've finally got a bike worth shouting about.

I am your Giant Warp DS1. You complain about my braking ability and my weak frame. Well, Let me tell you a few things. I am a relatively light bike- because thats what you want. I am very strong for my weight, however, when your chalupa scarfing, hefeweizen sucking, non exercising for days on end blobbiness gets on me- I get a little stressed. Then, to top it off you smash me around with very little or no technique. You get on me, run me down hills and lock the brake levers, I want to stop, really I do. It's just a little hard with all that mass you've loaded on me pushing against my best efforts. Then, when you careen me off a four foot drop onto a hard flat surface or when you make a mistake and overshoot a corner- ramming me into a tree, you complain that I break? What do you expect? Before you convict me of being inferior why don't you consider taking a few simple steps to help me help you. Learn to ride and lose some weight. Fatazz.

This bike is the 2001. Am upgrading ASAP the pedals to clipless, the cranks/ chain rings and the BB. Giant is replacing the BB as it has been unfixable (LBS) noisy and clicking from day one. The front brake had to be adjusted with a few washers to get the whole unit to line up correctly. I love the brakes now. I weigh 210 and the bike is a joy to ride otherwise. I ride hard enough but not severe(no big drops)This is my first full suspension and I am generally pleased. The bike climbs better than anticipated and coming down is amazing. I recommend for those on a budget but jonesing for full suspension, I do plan to upgrade component by component as budget allows and skills require. I would not recommend for those that are severe riders. But for me it works well.

I bought the bike after it was used for three months by a guy who used it as training ride for his motocrossing. The brakes SUCKS. I've got the Formula MD1 brakes. It just never seem to work properly. I've used LX V brakes Before and those are more powerful than the Formula Disk brakes. The benefits of the brakes are when it gets wet or you buckled your rim. The other parts that I've had changed was due to breakage. I don't blame the parts, I weight around 170 pounds my height is around 1.75 metre and I did a lot of jumps and drops on those parts before they broke on me. Same thing goes for the frame This is my second Warp DS 1 frame. The one I origininally purchased crack at the weld that joins the down tube and the seat tower. As I am not the original owner, Giant cut me a great deal for the new frame. And it is still going strong. I know this frame won't last forever, but its better to break cheaper frame after it has taken a lot of abuse rather than breaking the more expensive ones. If you like to go fast on the downhill, do a few drops catch some air and still be able to pedal up some hills (not those super steep ones)and on a BUDGET, this is the bike for you. Overall this is a good bike for the money. If I'm buying a new bike it will most probably be another Giant, maybe the new Xtc AC bike or the some old warp ds frame again.

Strengths:
Great looks, nice frame (cut out is great for when you need to dismount in a hurry), decent paint job.
Weaknesses:
BRAKES!!!Brakes!!!Brakes!!! My bike has spent 3 days in the shop because of the brakes. 1st time, the front caliper failed, 2nd time, the front caliper locked up, 3rd time, the front caliper failed. It's just a matter of time before Giant gets slapped with the huge lawsuit.
Bike Setup:
stock, changed pedals to BMX style and added Michelin wild gripper lites.
Bottom Line:
Good value for the money, get giant to replace those pesky Formula disk brakes, they suck. Did I mention the crappy brakes? Yeah, they really suck. And one more thing, bus drivers are envious of my brake squeal. No need for a bell on this bike, heck, it should come with ear plugs.
I hope Giant reads this... (replace my brakes!!!!)

Bottom Line:
Awesome plush bike, bang for the buck, down hill is a breeze with this bike, up-hills suck because of the weight, but hey thats what all them fancy gears are for. If you like doing a lot of nasty rough trails, with not much cross country then this is the bike. The Formula discs suck if they are not set up correctly the first time you use them, the power is good but the squeelling will actually make you not want to ride. I had the bike shop swap them with Avid mechanicals, but I had to find then online because their suppliers couldn't (lame). The set up of the bike is for down hill but you can swap some components to lighten the load a little. I've been beating on this bike in Vietnam (Milford, Ma) and also Loon Mnt, have not had any problems. Except for the Mavic rims I changed over to (played to rough on out of the box rims). I have noticed a tendency for the rear end to constantly kick out to the right when hitting baby heads and other smaller quicker bumps, and brake squeal when pedalling, asked Giant they said the tourque on the rear bushing might not be right, (dealer screwed up). I may upgrade to a better quality bushing after the fall just for the hell of it. If you have any problems with the bike call Giants 800 number abd let them know, they will help speed up anything with your local dealer, Like swapping out my Formula pads for new non-squeek ones (didn't work). Also you've got to try the Ritchey TGV grips, these are by far the best grips I've ever used, and will ever use. Over all a great bike, some minor tweaks and your all set.

This is my first full suspension bike and I love it. I was leary about a full suspender at first with the "bobing" when you climb, I dont even notice it on this bike. I dont know if its just the tires or what but it actually climbs better on the steeper terrain than the hardtail. I set the rear shock real tight and have the front forks on the light side. It downhills like a champ. Very smooth, great control in or out of the saddle. I haven't had any real wrecks yet so I dont know how the frame will hold up, Its great so far. For anyone just getting into mountian biking or even some hwo has some money to put into a few upgrades. The warp series by giant is the way to go.

Great handling and good parts selection for it's price range. And I upgraded to a RS Psylo XC with 5 inches of travel, it's AWESOME!!! Also the Formula Discs, they are more than adequate for stopping power, so why is everyone dissing them? Maybe I just got a good bike.
Weaknesses:
Stupid sleeve in the seat tube. I just got mine, and I have to do something about that, I can't lower my seat any more and I need it a few inches lower but I don't want to cut my seatpost. Haven't looked into it yet. Also the rebound damping, I would much rather see a shock with just compression damping. Don't get me wrong, open it up and it performs well, but close it and gets weird (I don't know how else to describe it).
Bike Setup:
Psylo XC, otherwise stock
Bottom Line:
Bottom line is I looked and looked and looked, and I couldn't find a better bike for the price. I mean, disc brakes, Judy XC (although I upgraded), GREAT frame, and good parts. It's a VERY upgradeable frame. That's the reason I bought it. Beefy tubes and nice welds = durability.

great bike for a beginner, but also agreeable to upgrades as your skill improves and you start breaking things. good looks, nice suspension, durable frame, fat tires for fast downhilling. no real problems with the components until the past few weeks. a year of pounding and grinding will do that, but overall I've had few problems.
Weaknesses:
a bit heavy, didn't like the mech disc brakes at all--squealed like pigs and were too difficult to tune; sounds like they've been recalled--wish the dudes at the bike store had mentioned that instead of selling me on a new set of xt v-brakes...don't suppose it matters now. Also, probably don't need disc brakes in the desert... ditch the pedals and buy something clipless
a great bike that keeps getting better as I upgrade worn out components. a bike you can learn on, but you will want to replace things as you go. things break--learn to live with that. I would've looked silly pushing a 2k bike around 'cos I wasn't much of a rider a year ago. now i appreciate the subtle differences between lx, xt and xtr. the brakes had to go, or i would've killed myself. my wife bought this bike for me and she did a great job, she's also been very tolerant of the different upgrades to date (which will be necessary given the pounding you'll want to do). oh yeah, it also looks cool...

Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
This bike is great. I was after a Gary Fisher F3, but the price was too steep - about $2,000 Canadian - and the 2000 model comes with wimpy, useless Jett forks. Gary Fisher also got rid of the rear shock lockout on the F4, which is the feature I liked best about the 1999 model.
The DS-1 handles great and scores high in the looks department. Everywhere I go people comment on it. The original brakes were completely useless, but when I took it in for its one-month tuneup the shop informed me Giant had issued a recall. The new ones work well, but they still emit a loud squeel that scares pedestrians to death when I come up behind them.
For the price, I couldn't find a better bike. Mine hasn't given me a minute of trouble, and I've done a lot of hard riding.
While a bit heavy and clunky on the road, this bike excels off road and is a great fit for anyone on a budget who likes to hit the trails.

Bottom Line:
Well I have a love hate relationship with this bike.
LOVE: In my opinion you could not purchase a better bike for the price. It can take ALOT of abuse and not really whine about it.
HATE: However, if you intend to do any serious carnage on this bike you had better be a light or very nimble rider. I admit that I am not an easy rider (6'4", 200lbs), and this is probably the reason that I broke Two frames in less than Two months. Giant was excellent, and replaced them promptly. My point is that if you are into chucking the bike around (drops over 4'), you may want to consider an upgrade to a different bike. In the end let's face it, you will not see this bike in any videos or on a podium because that is not what it is designed for.
So I now own an AEON Joker which is amazing! But if you are on a budget(which I was) or are a budding freerider/downhiller I still don't think you could find a better bike. Good job Giant!

I have added the following to the stock DS-1: SH XT Rr D, SH XT shifters, SH LX crankset, SH M858 clip pedals, firm springs in the Judies, and a Black Spire Ring gear protector
Bottom Line:
Great deal for the money. I have two friends riding the stock bikes and they are very happy. I am a larger type guy, weighing in at 230 lbs and 6'3" in my socks. The shifting up-grades were necessary for me on hill climbs. The stock STXRc (Now Deore)just did not like my weight and power on hills. I bent the Suntour PFF big ring gear on a log and rather than replace just the ring (machine punched un-hardened steel)I went for the crankset with the protector for obvious reasons. Firm springs in the Judies were required due to my size. Love the bike. I ride virtually everyday and I still smile when I get on. I ride it hard and it has not failed me yet.
Again you could complain about individual components, but, as a package there really is nothing to complain about. I going to flame this one up as high as it goes.

Stock with Shimano 323 SPD. Front derailleur is STXrc. Diatech Spiral Stop mechanical discs as standard.
Bottom Line:
Having left my trusty Saracen hardtail in the UK, I rapidly developed withdrawal symptoms and began to look around for a replacement. After having spent hours in the local cycle shops I came across the 2000 Warp DS-1 at the bargain price of $(Aus)1400 - $250 below stock price (Thanks PlanetCycle) :-))
I had read many posts flaming the previously fitted Formula MD-1 discs and was concerned that the Diatech discs would perform in a similar fashion ;-/ However the test ride allayed my fears and, with a little tweaking of the rear caliper to reduce brake lever travel more to my liking, I have found them to be equal to my Avid V's in similar conditions (Admittedly not much snow here in Brisbane!)with no evidence of squealing.
Ride quality is smooth with minimal biopacing on uphills and stonking performance downhill with the Tyrannoraptors handling loose surfaces with no skittering. Componentry is functional and has performed faultlessly after 2-3 ft dropoffs (I/m only a newbie downhiller remember ;-)) and on sludgy trails. The Judy XC shocks are plush and the rear GTM-7 shock handles my 81kg bod with minimal biopacing on steep uphills. Rims and Frame are bombproof with a high quality finish and smooth welds.
In summary the bike cannot be beaten for value and would provide an ideal introduction to the wonderful world of xc or downhill. Veterans will no doubt look elsewhere, but if they look beyond the "lower end" specs of some components and the past "reputation" of Giant, they will find that the overall package cannot be beaten for value and overall performance.

This bike was perfect because it offers middle of the road components (i.e. mechanical disc brakes, judy xl's) and looks pretty cool to boot. It was also the most comfortable bike i demoed. I would recommend this bike to any weekend warrior. I've beat the dickens out of it and so far it's held up pretty well. Bike strength, price for a full suspension bike!!!!!, looks great.
Weaknesses:
Rear brakes have not yet fully set in. However after adsjusting them per the manual they were perfect.
Bike Setup:
Stock from the factory floor
Bottom Line:
I have read all the reviews on the brakes the bike the setup, everything... the brakes work, they stop the bike when you want it if you adjust them as per the manual, I have taken the bike down steep cliffs and also sets of 4 foot drops and other experienced bikers(5 years) say what I say, THE RIDE IS GREAT.
But remember you pay for what you get, the more you can spend upfront is better in all cases. However for $1700 this is a bike to look over before you make that purchase.

Great fork with removeable boots, although if your main use is downhilling, un upgrade to a Judy XL is recomended. Crazy hot red COLOUR!!!
Weaknesses:
None so far, other than the bad rep for the recalled formula mechanical discs.

Bottom Line:
Great setup A great introduction to the crazy world of downhill. Most of all, if a 16 year old can race it, anyone can! It has a little too much travel for a xc bike though. Make sure you demo it! I give it 5 Flamin' Chilis for a great bike with great value and to counter the guy who gave it 1.

Brakes. But you will be happy to learn that Giant have recalled ALL the brakes and are replacing them with a new (improved) calliper. At least they are here in Sydney!

Bottom Line:
I like it. My riding experience is not phenominal but i do ride with the police in Sydney and I wish they supplied me with a bike that handles as well as this Giant. I too had problems with the releasing of te brakes, but upon service i was informed that giant were recalling ALL the formula MD disk brakes from this bike and were replacing them with a new calliper. Exact specs unknown. Overall I like it!

Weaknesses:
the brakes on this bike when they worked they operated well in fair weather conditions. I had the bike for 2 days and one of the calipers froze up. I had another caliper stop working and I broke a 3rd. caliiper off of the mounts to the frame and at this point for safety reasons I returned the bike. I was doing strictly trail riding , no drops or jumping. I was very dissapointed and have done some research and alot of people have had these problems. I hope Formula is able to fix this problem before someone is hurt because of brake failure
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
This bike in my opinion would be a good bike for someone to ride on gravel roads and very easy trails only due to the fact of poor braking. I think cable actuated disc have improved but they still have a long way to go. This bike would be much better with a good v-brake. A good bike for the money if it would stay together and work properly.
