Strengths:
Way better components than previous years, new G2 frame better than original Genesis... forks offset a little bit more forward, provide better downhill control
Weaknesses:
Pricey, had to upgrade pedals
Similar Products Used:
Hoo Koo E Koo, older Tassajara
Bike Setup:
Stock, but upgraded to clipless pedals
Bottom Line:
I like to climb and I like singletrack. My older Tassjara got jacked and i went almost 2 years without a bike. I just bought one of the new 09 models, and Fisher really didn't spare any expense making sure this was a competitive bike. Relative to the rest of the market, the Tassajara is a way better bike than it was when I originally bought one (I probably should have bought the a lower end model!) Until 29ers become more prolific and come down in price, I don't think I'll ever need a better bike. I have owned 3 Fishers, and they have all been awesome... this one really raised the bar, IMO.

I just started biking again from a 13 yr break so i cant give a real technical review. All I can say is for the past 3 months ive been ridaing every chance I get and this bike has been awesome!! I dont remember my old GT Avelanche performing even close to this. This bike climbs like a horse. I believe that I wll be a lifetime GF rider. In fact I cant see me needing to upgrade anytime soon, the bike can do more than I can. Great bike for a beginner and in my opinion for an intermediate rider as well.

After the first week I replaced the saddle. I dont know if its a crappy saddle or a personal thing but it definitely didnt work for me!!

Great deal on a great bike. Would recommend to any one getting to know mountain biking.

08 Model Most of the time I like to wait before posting about a product but I have really been taken by this bike. Yeah the tires are not the best but hey that is a easy fix right. Many people do not like the seat but again that is a personal thing. I really do not have a issue with the seat. I went on a few test rides and when I gave this bike a spin it was very nice to say the least. The line was straight and had less vibrations. This was to be my Xmas gift from my wife but she could not wait to give it to me so we took it Home. I let her take it for a spin now she wants a G F as well. I took this bike out on the trails and was very happy with the handling but then it was time to climb and this bike was pure enjoyment at that time I almost started laughing at the performance. The shifting system is great so far I still have to work on the shock still but that is a tweak. Gary Fischer Great Job This Bike is DA Bomb for under a Grand. Of course this bike still new as can be but like i said it just has really taken me. For any one that is looking for a nice hard tail or entry level race bike I think you may want to check this ride out. I am going to ride and race the day lights out of mine, and it is black.

Weaknesses:
What I found that really needs to be reevaluted is the seat, I went through 2 seats and the grips started to twist on me after about a month and if they got a little wet your hands just slip off. I actually upgraded the grips to locking grips. Also I felt that their should of been a little bit more of an upgrade in parts versus the pirahna.

Strengths:
Super versatile, durable, great geometry for larger riders - climbs and descends steep colorado terrain very well, decent component mix, good looking black and white paint job, plush, smoother feel than you'd expect from a hardtail in this price range
Weaknesses:
stock bontrager seat is poor, paint knicks and rubs off very easily, mixed feelings on the manitou axel fork
a few minor upgrades made it a great bike: WTB seat, crank bros candy pedals, avid bb7 brakes, had to replace rear wheel with mavic crossland and started using tubeless
Bottom Line:
I commute on this all week and do a couple weekday trail rides either morning or evening, and usually 2 weekend rides. Having made the 3 main upgrades (brakes, seat & pedals) and running tubeless on the rear wheel I rarely have any problems. I've ridden it pretty hard for 2 years (2005 model) and it still feels smooth and quiet and fun to ride. I'm 6'3" 210 lbs and found it very accommodating on a recent 40 mile ride over the divide.
Its also nice to not feel like it will be last year's technology right away - its a simple bike with a classic look to it and I have no desire to upgrade.

Genesis Geometry is really dead on.Havent had any issues with the Sole brakes yet, back pads rubbed a little but was easy to adjust.Bontrager tires seem to be pretty good on the loose marble stone where I do most of my riding.
Weaknesses:
The paint on this bike is really soft,it nicks very easily. Ive been having issues keeping the rear deraileur adjusted.Has a tendency to do some ghost shifting in the middle ring, maybe its the cable or the component,I havent gotten it right yet.The grips are a tad hard for me and the seat was real garbage.
Ive spent the last two years on a roadbike and decided to give the dirt a shot again before i got to old.I didnt want to get into big bucks since I really wasnt sure how much gas I had in the tank and how much interest my g/f would have in it.A friend of mine who worked at my bike shop talked me into the "Tass" and Im glad he did. This bike is a joy to ride.It goes where you point it and its the lightest feeling hardtail Ive pedaled. It inspired me so much I just went and bought a Jekyl and will keep this for the lighter stuff.Eventually Ill swap out the grips and maybe add a carbon post and bar to cut back on some weight. The Genesis geometry is really the nuts. This is a solid hardtail and its got me back into it again. If your looking for a reasonably priced hardtail that performs like a expensive one,buy the Tass and swap out some knick knack stuff and your in the hunt.Fisher did a nice job with this one......

(Stick some washers between frame and rear caliper to minimize brake pad clearance at the back. On the front apply the same technique, only the washers go between the hub and the disc.) I do most of my riding in the north of the Netherlands wich is pretty flat with the occasional bump/climb so I can't say that i really need a lot of stopping power either. However the few 'decscents' I did do I wasn't short on it either. Overall a pretty good bike for me!

I've been riding a home built, quality, full suspension set up for around 3 years, and I'd forgotten how exciting riding hardtails was. The frame is light, strong, fast and responsive, and quite well suited to the kind of riding I do. It's quite long in the cock pit due to the genesis geometary, but has changed my riding for the better especially climbing. The groupset and components are well spec'd for my riding, especially the heavier rims than I've ridden previously.
Weaknesses:
I wasn't keen on the Hayes Sole brakes which are a bit feeble. I put my old Deore's on for bite with a 7" rotor. Bonty tyres not really aggresive enough for sticky UK weather. Not so much the product, but buying bikes here in the UK is so much more expensive than for the same in the US!

Bottom Line:
This bike has great (different) geometary, which some people may not take to (try before you buy!) - I like it, I'm 5' 11" and a failry fit but I'm a big fella, so its been great for me, because I can get more movement and balance. The group set is very good and well selected - what you'd expect on a bike of this price. The Hayes Sole, I think were the biggest let down, giving as much braking as a good pair of mechanical discs. The addition of the 7" rotor and using my Deore brakes were needed - may be due to my size in fairness. This added to a pair of more aggresive tyres have honed the bike into a superb XC machine that will take a decent bit of pounding due to the beefy rims - but still fast and exciting. I am glad I chose this over a couple of other similarly priced bikes from competitors I did try before I bought, purley for the geomtry. If you want to do jumps and drop offs, buy a specific bike - this is for XC, and its great at it. I only gave it a 4 overall because of the really poor brakes.

Bottom Line:
When I was about to purchase a hardtail, I was considering an Ibex Trophy Comp which costs $800. I had done a lot of research and this was the best deal I could find. My second choice was a Fisher Tassajara Disc which cost $850. I would not have minded having to work on the Ibex myself, since there are no shops that sell it - it is only available online from Ibex. But I still thought it would be nice to get a bike from an LBS in case there were any warranty issues, plus getting the free tuneups for the first year would be a bonus. However, the components of the Ibex were so much better than the Fisher so I decided on the Ibex. I was about to purchase it online just before Summer 06 and only when I went to add it to my cart did I realize that it was out of stock, as are most popular Ibex bikes that time of year. I was not going to wait to buy a bike until the Sept/Oct estimate that the new Trophy models would be back in stock.
So I searched around LBSs and found the Fisher on sale for $700. Well, this was not bad since at least it would be $100 cheaper than the Ibex. So I went for it.
After a few weeks I decided that the Hayes Sole hydraulics on the Fisher were pretty crappy. The LBS was not much help. I took it in to have the brakes adjusted as well as the gear cables tweaked since I was getting a lot of noise in some gears. After a full day I got it back with the same exact problems. They apparently did not do a thing to it. I adjusted both of them myself. The first thing I did, however, was replace the awful and dangerous m505 pedals (OEM version of the m515 that came on the Tass) with m540s. Cost about $60. The Ibex comes with m520s, which probably would have been okay (my kid has them and they work as well as the 540's, but are a little heavier.) Then I replaced the Hayes Sole with BB7s, which cost $240 total. The Ibex comes with BB7s.
I chose the Fisher based on standover height - I have short legs so got the medium size. However, I felt a bit cramped in the cockpit so I searched for a setback seatpost. Got a Thudbuster, since this appeared to be the most reliable setback post, and had the benefit of the suspension. It has been excellent. Cost about $100.
Like just about everyone else who gets a Tass with the uncomfortable Bontrager seat, I replaced it - with a WTB Laser V which cost around $60. The Ibex comes with a Laser V. I did not like the Bontrager tires on the Tass which were too slippery on rocks and roots, so spent $55 on Panaracers. The IRC Mythos that come on the Ibex probably would have been sufficient. After a few months the Bontrager crankset on the Tass is creaking, so will likely be replacing that soon. I have no idea if I would have experienced the same problem with the Ibex's Shimano LX - I am hard on cranksets. That will cost me about $100.
On the upside, the chain has not broken on the Tass. On the last few bikes I have had (road and trail since the 1970's), I have had to upgrade to expensive chains since I go through them.
With all the upgrades, I have really enjoyed the Tass. The fork is a Manitou Axel Platinum with air and lockout, and as long as I keep a little grease on the stanchions, it is excellent for my purposes. Now that I have been riding harder trails in the last few months I am realizing that perhaps I should have gotten a full suspension. However, the Thudbuster has been excellent and while definitely not a substitute for a full suspension, it is a lot better with it than without. Also, I will soon have all the components I need to build a decent full suspension bike by buying just the frame.
I did not even consider getting a full suspension when I was buying since my last bike was a first generation DBR with elastomer forks with a threaded top (and a funny retainer that no tool is made that I can find that will remove it) that had not worked in about a decade. Just having a front suspension was a huge improvement.
So, let me add it up. The total cost of the Fisher plus the upgrades to make it as good as an Ibex Trophy is $700 + 240 + 60 + 60 + 55 + 100 + 100 = $1315 (plus tax and shipping where applicable). I should really subtract the $100 for the Thud since it would have been a good upgrade on either bike so I will use $1215 for the comparison. However, the Tass was still my second choice and better than any other bike I found in LBSs for the money but if I had known what an expensive upgrade getting good brakes was, I might have looked for another bike that had some kind of avid disc brakes, or perhaps eschew them altogether and just get a Tass without discs, which is much cheaper.
Want to know the funniest thing to all this? A week after I bought the Fisher, Ibex came out with a "special edition" Trophy Comp, which as far as I can tell is an extended run of the same bike since they figured they sold out too early in the year. So I could have waited a week (instead of 4 months) and gotten an Ibex. And for the money I have put into the Tass (well, actually for over $200 less) I could have bought a full suspension Ibex Comp with better components (including BB7s) for just $1000, plus about the same weight as my upgraded Fisher to boot! But the Asta Comp was sold out too, and probably won't be available until March 2007. Anyone want to buy an upgraded Tass in March?
