Price Paid: $1600.00
Purchased At:Kentwood Cycling
Strengths:Light, great handling, awesome color & graphics(2009 model). Good components & great value for the price.
Weaknesses:Noisy brake pads and sounds like headset creaks (which I've read on other reviews)
Similar Products Used:Fisher Wahoo, Fisher HiFi Plus
Bike Setup:Stock except for grips.
Bottom Line:Gary Fisher does it again! Another great bike and great value. This bike handles great and acts more like a 26" bike; I firmly believe in the G2 geometry. For a $2,000 bike, you would have to search high & low to to get this much bike for the price. Besides, noone really does twenty niner's any better than Fisher......

Strengths:I am 6'4" 240 lbs and I am in pretty good shape. I purchased the 21" frame and with the 29" wheels I finally have a bike that fits me. This is one awesome ride. Smooth as silk and FAST. It also handles extremely well. My previous bike was a Stumpjumper 26" and the Paragon handles better. It glides through sand and dirt alike. It also eats log piles for lunch. Smooth and easy over the top. SRAM X9 components and Juicy brakes.
Weaknesses:My front brake is squeaking but I suspect an adjustment will solve the problem.

Bottom Line:This bike instantly made me a better more confident rider. I feel much more stable that on my Stumpjumper and the ride and power are MUCH better..

I absolutely love the bike. A+

Strengths:Fast, stable, incredible geometry, Felt like a 26" in the tight turns. Only 26.5 lbs stock. Fox forx soaked it up, elixir 5's were smooth and strong. SRAM x-9 tight and perfect.
Weaknesses:Seat not so great, but no big deal...
Similar Products Used:pivot mach 4 and mach 5 (test rode) Several big name hardtail 26" FS Spec Pitch
Bike Setup:Stock, will go tubeless in a week or two
Bottom Line:Amazing bike. If you want a 29er, get one. I'm only 145 lbs and 5'7". I got the 15.5" frame and it's perfect...more like a 17" frame on a 26" bike.

I shot up hills that normally I take slower, and had more grab in the gravel and sand than any other bike. Rolled over log piles made them feel half as high.

I looked at Pivots and 'Niners, but at twice the price if you don't mind a hardtail
and aren't looking for steel, this is a great bike. It is a softer ride than a 26" hardtail, and I expect when I tubleless with less air, it will feel even plusher.

Favorite Trail:The back way to work
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Goldstream Sports
Strengths:Floatation on snow, traction, overall ride quality. It fits my 6 ft 200 lb bod like a glove. The 29er and a wider tire in back never broke through trail crust like I did on my old bike. It also provides more traction and cushion on summer trails. The other 29ers in the same price/component range that I test rode did not compare in ride feel.

Components all perform well and relible
Weaknesses:SRAM shifters, Frame build quality. SRAM shifter mechanism is sharp and crisp and reliable down to -10 F, at colder temperatures it just won't release the cable to smaller gears. For me, considering that the average temperature in January is -10F, that's not acceptable.

The big stick point, is the frame, I'm not an extreme rider and the frame cracked about 2 weeks ago. The crack is on the seat tube, just above the top tube weld. GF is backing their warranty without question and is trying to get the the LBS a new frame, but GF does not have any replacement frames in their current supply chain. So now they are sending a Superfly carbon frame, and is paying the LBS to build the bike up from the broken Paragon. GF does back their product, but like many in the current economy don't seem to have enough on hand stock.

Reading these reviews it seems that GF has some serious problems in their offshore frame builders controlling the weld temperatures on their aluminum bikes.
Similar Products Used:Test rode other 29ers, non compared. My last (and current) ride is a 1989 Specialized hardrock...
Bike Setup:Stock, except for during winter put MTB Weirwolf LT tire on back and rigid Karate Monkey fork on front.
Bottom Line:Overall a huge upgrade from the 20 year-old Hardrock. The bike allowed me to extend my commuting season to days that would have been a walk because the snowy trails would have been too soft.

Excellent ride, great product concept. Not sure that GF can consistently deliver an dependable frame.

I would have given a much better rating prior to the frame cracking. I think Shimano shifters may be better.

Price Paid: $1700.00
Strengths:Light, excellent geometry, rolls rocks as equal or better than a 26 full suspension, climbs like a beast
Weaknesses:frame cracks easily (where seat tube meets top tube)
Similar Products Used:2004 Gary Fisher X-Caliber, 2005 Gary Fisher Cake 2 Deluxe
Bike Setup:Stocked components (SRAM X.9, Bontrager)
Bottom Line:This is a great bike all-around. It's been subjected to nothing less than gnarly, rocky riding, and has been fast with great handling for a hardtail. Though I still love my full suspension for trail riding, this bike is great for racing and long-distance rides. Weighs in somewhere in the mid 20's, so pretty light given the huge wheels. Can't beat the component set for the price. Only downfall, as noted above, is that the frames tend to crack easily. Of course I've been subjecting the bike to trails that a 5/5" would usually love. Likely due to the super light weight design. No worries though, Fisher backs them with a lifetime warranty. Great turnaround on the warranty replacement (within 5 days of cracking the old frame, had the new bike built up).

Weaknesses:None so far, REALLY

Bike Setup:Stock except for San Marco saddle and ODI bolt on grips. SRAM X-9 front / rear / shifters
Bottom Line:This bike rocks. Could you get by with a lower level component group like on the X-Caliber? Yes, but why?

The geometry of this bike is amazing. Like everyone says, it will roll over roots and rocks like they aren't there. that goes without saying. What isn't always mentioned is that it handles like a 26er hard tail once you get a little speed under you. What I have noticed is that if the handling goes away if you let you speed drop too low.

It does seem to take a little extra leg power to get you rolling but once you are up to 7-9 MPH you are good to go.

My legs burned a little more than usual the first time I rode it until I got used to using a different gear to get it rolling.

Purchased At:Bikes Unlimited
Strengths:This was my first "real" bike so everything appeared to be a strength especially the weight of the bike compared to my first set of wheels. The brakes were great (Hayes 9) and the 29 inch wheels rolled over almost everything.
Weaknesses:The geometry of the bike sets itself up for weaknesses (IMO). The top tube cracked and is in the process of being replaced. I am also not a fan of Bontrager components. They seem to brake down easily. I have upgraded some components (Cranks, wheels, seatpost)
Similar Products Used:None. My first bike was a Trek 4100.
Bike Setup:Stock except Salsa wheels, Thomson elite seatpost, Shimano DX crank set)
Bottom Line:I love the bike but the geometry is suspect. I am too new at riding to provide too many details but a friend of mine recommended this bike and he cracked the frame twice. It rides great and I am sad I am having to send it back b/c of the frame cracking. I am now building a custom full suspension bike.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1999.00
Purchased At:Griffith Cycle
Strengths:This is the 2009 Paragon, which is this year's top-of-the-line non-carbon hard-tail. I'm 6'2" and 190lbs and bought the XL (21.5"). Bike feels *huge*, but not in an uncomfortable way. Like riding a giant horse. Very light given that it's a stock setup.

The shock is a Fox F29 with 80mm of travel. The new Bontrager wheels have *wide* rims, (think 25% wider than, say, Rhino Lites) so you can run fairly low pressure without rolling your tires.

One other thing: there is *massive* clearance between the chain/seat stays. The stock tires are 2.5s, and there's around a cm of clearance at the chainstays.
Weaknesses:Since I have to say something, I'll say that the only thing that stands out is the poor SRAM X.0 front derailer (SRAM's only dud.) Should tell you a little bit about the quality of the stock set-up.
Similar Products Used:2006 29er Supercaliber; 2008 29er HiFi Deluxe; 1997 Bontrager Privateer Comp.
Bike Setup:Stock. Swapped out Crank Bros Candy SL pedals for Time ATACs (due to existing shoe compatibility).
Bottom Line:Loves it.

If you're a hard-tail fan, you want a new bike you can ride out of the shop, and don't have a hipster goatee or say things like "Steel is Real", and aren't concerned about getting a unique head-tube badge, you should get this bike.

Oh, and--because of the white paint job--you will need to invest in some white shorts and shoes as well.

Strengths:I'm reviewing an 07 Paragon. Looks Great! (who really cares though). Climbs like a billy goat, geometry is great (for me anyway). Feels like my roadbike on the dirt.
Weaknesses:Bontrager bar and grips were hard as a ROCK!!! Kind of felt like a Bontrager poster child with all the Bontrager stuff. It worked okay but just bugged me. Reba fork was seeping a little oil but works well.
Similar Products Used:First 29er, came off a Specialized Rockhopper comp.
Bike Setup:I'm 6'2" and 175lbs. I got the large frame. Did away with the bars, stem, seatpost, seat. Replaced with Titec Carbon Pluto bar, oury grips, and Thomson X4 stem (this made the ride much better). Replaced seat with a Tioga MC lite and the seatpost with a Thomson Elite. For 35 mile plus rides I put the bontrager seat back on. I plan to upgrade to American Classic wheels this winter.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. Upon the first ride I felt like I was way up in the air. Took a little getting used to but it didn't take long until I was able to go much faster on it than I ever did on my old 26" bike on all terrains. Might have paid a little more for the GF name but I still love the bike, especially after putting on the carbon bar an grips. Amazing how much that helped. If your looking at 29ers you should give it a ride.

Similar Products Used:Giant XTC
Bike Setup:stock except for carbon riser bars w/ Ouri lock on grips

Bottom Line:This review is for the '08 Paragon.
Whatever Gary Fisher did to the geometry of this thing works. Don't look at the geometry, it rides much differently than you'd expect. Feels as quick or quicker (steering-wise) than my 26" the Fox fork is great - alwasys been a fan of them. Parts spec is pretty darn good for the price. fairly light as delivered. Handles tight twisty single track as good as a 26 - believe it or not. Rolls over everything...couldn't believe how good it felt right out of the box. I have changed out the saddle and the bars/grips. Saddle is a bit rough riding, and the bars/grips combo are rock hard. A carbon bar & some better grips go a long way on this thing. Other than that, it's about all I'd change. Take one for a spin...I'd recommend this for sure.

* A couple of notes: It comes from the factory with tubelss rim strips and tubeless tire but not the correct valve stems. My had tubes installed. Had to order the valves from the shop...don't know why it wouldn't come with them at least in a separate box etc.
Also, doesn't ship with pedals...a bike of this price, should come with something - or at least an option.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1395.00
Purchased At:Bike and Sport, SF, NM
Strengths:Value for the money, quality components and SRAM shifters/rear der, 29'er design, and it's the best fitting MTB I've ever ridden.
Weaknesses:Frame looks a little spindly in the rear triangle (the rear dropouts are really pretty and graceful), but so far it feels plenty stiff for my taste; time will tell if it holds up. 80mm Reba fork feels like it needs more travel. Too many of the usual GF/Trek Bontrager components for me....
Similar Products Used:My first 29'er MTB. I've had too many 26" MTBs over the years to list...currently ride a Specialized FSR Stumpjumper Expert and a Gary fisher Zigurrat HT (both with tons of upgrades).
Bike Setup:2007 red frame with white Reba Race fork (would have preferred the grey one...a bit less flashy and easier to keep clean), SRAM 9 rear der and shifters, XT front der, Avid Juicy 5 brakes, plus all the usual Bontrager components on GF bikes (bar, stem, seat, seatpost, rims, hubs, tires, etc.)

Upgrades at time of purchase: I immediately changed the Bontrager stem/bars/seatpost/seat over to a Thomson Elite straight seatpost and a Thomson X4 stem (110mm 10 degree rise), an Easton Monkeylite composite bar and a Specialized BG saddle (which fits me well). I also upgraded the Shimano 505 pedals to a pair of 540s. Like I said....I don't like the over-use of the Bontrager parts, and the bike looks really good with the high-end cockpit stuff.

Will likely upgrade the wheels/tires when they wear out, or just get another lightweight set (Cane creek has a nice 29'er wheelset) to use on the dirt and keep the OE stuff for around town/road use.
Bottom Line:I'm a bit over 6'2" and weigh about 190 lbs. I have never before felt fully comfortable on any 26" MTB. When riding an appropriately sized 26" frame (I used to have a Stumpjumper HT with the largest frame size available) I always felt like I was riding a too-large frame on top of too-small wheels...I never felt like I was "in" the bike, but, rather, too far on top (front and rear) of the bike.

With my current 26" GF Zigurrat's HT Genesis geometry (19" frame size), which has a considerably longer top tube than my previous 26" HTs, I felt a little better, but not much. With the longer stem necessary for my height/reach on 26" MTBs, I always felt like I was too far forward when standing on the pedals, and the wheels always felt too small....like I was cantilevered out over the front axle and ready to do an endo over the bars. The necessary rear-set seatrail position also put me too far back over the rear wheel and I had a tendency to wheelie when trying to climb on my 26" MTBs.

When the 29" MTB concept came out I was intrigued. Over the years I had built up a couple of 700c heavy duty cross-type roadframes to use in the dirt. I had always dreamed of a "full size" MTB, with a good suspension fork and MTB components/wheels/tires. I had a chance to ride the Paragon 29'er and immediately found what I'd always been looking for. I bought it on the spot.

I bought the 21" Paragon (XL) frame because it fit me so well; the shop had a 19" and the 21", I rode them both and it was no contest...the larger frame was perfect for my height/dimensions. The large frame did not overpower the 29" wheels like previous 26" MTBs, either visually or in the geometry of the bike. The top tube length is perfect for me...plenty of reach and I don't need a super-long stem or too-far rearset seat position. I finally feel like I'm riding "in" the bike cockpit, in full control, and not perched on top of a poorly-fitting frame. Standing on the pedals and picking my way through some tricky stuff was a revelation.

I've ridden the bike already on several trails here in Santa Fe. I made a long climb up the Aspen Vista Trail (six miles up...starting at 10,000 feet and topping out at over 12,000) trail to see how the Paragon would climb in comparison to my Stumpjumper FSR. I was able to climb faster and in a higher gear, no tendency to wheelie on the steeper grades, and the descent was very comfortable and stable. Everything I'd read about "angle of attack" and rolling over the smaller stuff with ease is true. Tighter, more technical singletrack will take some getting used to...we'll see.

For anyone over 6' and uncomfortable on 26" MTBs I'd strongly suggest riding a 29'er MTB. It's the perfect bike for taller riders for a variety of reasons. I'm looking at several FS 29'ers right now and will probably never feel satisisfied on any 26" MTB again.

Strengths:Real fast due to its ability to absorb all obstacles. You carry so much more speed. The center of gravity is lower than on my 26 inch so steep downhills and log crossings that would have thrown me before are handled with ease. Climbs great.
Weaknesses:The front end seems to wash out more than my 26. Also, the tires are terrible in the mud. They pack full and turn into slicks.
Bottom Line:I had never even seen a 29" on the trail until this year, now I and three others in my ride club have them and others are considering them. They are way faster and smoother in the rough. Can't see myself ever going back to a 26'.

Strengths:Very versatile - good on roads or trail and you can mount a variety of tires from road to cyclocross to mountain all on the same wheels. Inspires confidence. A fun bike.
Weaknesses:None. As one would expect, it's not quite as fast on the road as my carbon fiber road bike or quite as plush as my full suspension bike. Riser bars a little too upright for my taste - easy to remedy with flat bars.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Tasajara, Titaniam frame mountain bike.
Bike Setup:Stock (except for Crank Bros. Candy pedals. Even the seat is comfortable. (I plan to add flat bars to replace the stock riser bars as I'm used to being a bit lower and more strethed out.)
Bottom Line:A sweet package that can do it all. I do a lot of rides with a mix of street and fire roads or easy trails so I can head out and be READY FOR ANYTHING. If you are out on a road ride and want to explore a dirt road or trail, the Gary Fisher Paragon has you covered. I put on a set of Continental Gran Prix 4-Season (700 x 29c) road tires and they handle off-road surprisingly well and are very fast on the street. The forks, shifting, and brakes are all first rate.

I'm 6 feet 2 inches and 200 lbs and the extra large frame fits me well.

The Paragon is really good. I'm afraid my other bikes are going to get neglected.

Strengths:Climbs like a scared mountain goat and descends like one too! Rolls over nearly EVERYTHING. This bike just amazes me. I was skeptical, having ridden a sweet Turner XCE and a few hardtails; always light as I could get them. I took the Turner (a great 26' FS) to Salida, demo'd a Fisher 29 X-Cal (same frame, slightly lower quality components) for a 40 mile day. Rode my Turner the next day; bought the Paragon that eve! I'm nearly 50 yo, 5'5" and 120 lbs-and don't let ANYONE tell you these bikes aren't for women or shorter riders!!! I jumped in a MTB race a couple weeks later (my first in 3 years) and WON the Sport class; and honestly, the BIKE did it. Holds a line thru/over fields of babyheads that knocked the chicks on the 26ers all over the place. Easily rolls up stairsteps. The longer wheelbase also makes this bike stable, and it will descend like it's on rails. I literally can't believe how fast I find myself descending! As for climbs, well, inspite of it being heavier than a 26 HT, it climbs better-really. I caught the 2 race leaders on an extended non-techical climb. Has something to do with less energy input needed to keep the tires rolling because of inertia. Whatever. I LOVE THIS BIKE!
Weaknesses:None yet!

Bike Setup:Stock Bontrager Race 7050 cranks, Stock Reba 29 80mm front fork, stock saddle (!) stock Bontrager Race Lite disc-only wheelset with stock Bontrager Jones XR tires. Swapped out the stock hayes hydraulic disc brakes for Avid BB7 mech's, swapped out the stock trigger x-9's for some X-0 twisters I had; work fine with the stock X-9 derailleur. Swapped out stock Bontrager riser for a Easton Carbon flat bar, and a Ritchey WCS stem. Seatpost is an ugly Cane Creek 1" Thudbuster, but it WORKS. The larger wheels/tires feel like 1" of travel relative to a 26 HT, add a thudbuster and it almost rides like a FS!
Bottom Line:I'll never own a 26 er again. Great ride; great value. This bike, as it sat on the floor, is 90% of what I would want on a 'dream 29er custom' but at half the cost.

Bottom Line:Gary Fisher got it right. Surly, Titus, Dean, Independent Fab., Kelly and others are getting it too. 29" wheels are a better ride - period. Smoother and increased angular momentum [due to increased mass and the radius to the mass] - which means it will roll better.

[Most of you get it, BUT incase there remains a "Why 29"er?" out there] John Deer makes trackers with tall rear wheels for a reason - alittle intuition here. Here is and example [taken to the extremes to illustrate the point]. What would roll over a curb better a marble or a beach ball?

Additionally if you are a taller rider [I'm 6'3.5"] the XL will likely fit you like no other stock bike can. I've been uncomfortable and top heavy for 14 years - and I did not even know it until I rode the XL Paragon. WOW!....Handicap be gone!

So you could imagine how much of an advantage it is, and how much more stable this bike is compared to the smaller wheeled machine. Even if it is alittle slower in some short sections of a race or ride. It more than makes up that time by being faster everywhere else. It is just a matter of time before 26" wheeled machines are a thing of the past. Remember the 24" rear wheel on Cannondales and downhill bikes? yeah. It is just a matter of time.....

Purchased At:Chicago Drive Cycling
Strengths:Very nice frame geometry, nice components group for the most part. Sram is a big plus
Weaknesses:Not a fan of hayes disc brakes, wish i would have waited for the '06 paragon with Avids. Also, there isnt a whole lot of aftermarket parts for the 29er (i.e-tires, wheels, forks are getting there)
Similar Products Used:older bros GF Sugar 3+
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:For being my first nicer bike i love it. Its awesome on the hills, Im definitly a fan of the Sram components on it. The only thing that i dont like quite as much is the brakes. Ive ridden bikes with Avid Juicys and i like those much better than the hayes. All in all its a sweet bike for the price, i like the Sram components on it. Its a very nice bike especially if you spend some of your time on the road, with the bigger wheels, but still want a bike that performs well on the trail.

Purchased At:From the mechanic at my LBS
Strengths:Well, 29ers just kick @ss. my bike is alot different than stock because i bought it from a friend. the genesis geometry is great tho. saved me on many downhills.
Weaknesses:Small selection of parts for the 29er specific parts. (i.e. rims, tires, forks....)
Similar Products Used:Well, nothing is similar to a 29er. but i have used fisher cake, sugar race, marlin, motobecane fly, specelized stumpy fsr...
Bike Setup:Stock wheels and hubs, avid mech 5bb mech discs (soon to have 195mm rotors. ya just need something bigger with these wheels.) 03 Marzocchi mx comp dual spring fork, sram rocket twist shifts, xtr rear derrauler, sram xgen front, sram chain/cassete. easton ea50 stem, and soon handlebars and seatpost too. motobecane seat, cane creek s-2 headset, fsa bottom bracket, kenda klaw xt tires, salsa superlight 29 inch tubes
Bottom Line:Wow! this is an awesome bike. If i were to compare it to any other that i have riden it would stand above them all. it is kinda hard to compare tho because it naturally climbs much better than a fs bike, and the increased contact patch of the tires give me so much more traction it is amazing. my next rear tire will be a wtb exiwolf for the back and i will keep the kenda up front. the extra clearance beneath my cranks helps with logs and those downhills when you get stuck in a rut on a long downhill. the marzocchi fork is nice but at only 75mm i bottom it out all of the time and the dual spring is really heavy, but with a new fork like a rockshox reba 100mm or the whitebros 100mm dual air spring this will be the perfect bike for me. With the big wheels it is hard to keep the weight down and there is a small selection of tires, but you can get most of the good ones. bumps are not any less pronounced but you can go over them faster. With this bike i find that i go faster through the rough spots and i am having to brake more to slow down enough for the person in front of me. And on the flats i pedal less and can use small hills more to my advantage. The stearing with the 29s doesn't seem to be quite as nice as some of the other bikes i have ridden, but the headtube angle is next to nothing so the steering is slower than some, but a shorter stem would fix that. this bike accelerates slower than some i have ridden (namely the motobecane fly) but that is expected with the bigger wheels and tires compared to the little 21 pound motobecane. I am bigger than most riders at 6 foot 3 inches and 150 pounds. I know that im not the heaviest rider, thats why i can survive with the short fork, but i wouldn't recomend this bike to anyone under 5 foot 10 inches. however on my 21 inch frame the big wheels look fine. I give this bike 5 flamin' chilis because of the deal i got on it. and 5 because this is the nicest bike i have ever ridden.

Strengths:Very Fast on and off road; Absorbs and handles the trail bumps and roots like a 4x4 truck; Yellow frame / Gray forks for 2006!; Avid Juicy Seven hydraulic disc brakes (awesome!); 29" Wheels roll over everything so much plusher than smaller 26" tires; solid construction and design
Weaknesses:None available as floor models in local bike shops; the seat is hard and uncomfortable (recommend upgrading to something that suits your taste); the grips are only adequate
Similar Products Used:Specialized FSR; Univega; Cannondale
Bike Setup:XL Frame (21"), WTB Laser-V Pro Gel Ti Saddle, Suntour SP-NEX Suspension Seatpost (awesome!) Azonic Platform Pedals/Cane Creek Mallet C's, Elite Ciussi Gel Side Entry Cages (2), ODI Rogue Lock-on grips; Topeak Panoram 17 function computer, Topeak Wedge Seat Bag
Bottom Line:After waiting 10 weeks to receive my 2005 Icy-Red Paragon and sending a letter of complaint to TREK about the ridiculous wait-time, I was informed that all 2005 models have been sold so a week later, I received a georgeous brand spanking new 2006 model!!!! I walked into the bike shop and to my surprise is was Yellow with Gray Reba Race forks and blacked-out rims. It looks bad a$$!!! I ordered the XL (21") frame because I am 6'4" - 230lbs. I have been XC mountain biking for 18 years and have owned many 26" wheeled bikes... but this one is by far the best! It's the first time I have every truly fit snugly and comfortably on or in a bike... ever! I didn't know what I was missing. Now I understand the comfort my smaller riding buddies have on their 15 and 17 inch frames.

I do mostly single-track riding in NJ and PA and consider myself to be an above average rider. I have never been so excited over a stinkin bike before. That's why I'm writing this review.

The new 2006 Paragon rips through the single-track and switchbacks with speed and ease. It corners tight and brakes on the dime! The Rockshox Reba Race fork is tunable, plush, and soaks up the trails like a cadillac. As a tall rider, I feel like I'm sitting back and lower to the ground instead high and over the handlebars. My 5'10" buddy rode the bike and said he was surprized how well it handled and it didn't feel overly big for him. The only noticable difference was the larger diameter wheels which are very proportionate to the frame. He normally leads on the trails we ride while I lag behind. Now he has trouble keeping up with me as I tear up the trails! Awesome!

It appears the only upgrades to the Paragon from 2005 to 2006 models are the Yellow color, new Gray Reba Race forks, and Avid Juicy Seven hydraulic disc brakes. I replaced the stock saddle and seatpost immediately with a WTB Laser-V Ti Gel Saddle and Suntour SP-NEX seatpost (blows away the Thudbuster in my opinion for the parallelogram design). I also swapped the pedals for Cane Creek Mallet C's and replaced the grips with ODI Rogue lock-ons.

Bottom line... this bike is remarkable! I would recommend it to anyone over 6 foot tall without hesitation. This thing fits like a glove, cruises at 20+mph without effort, rolls over uneven terrain like a Hummer, and just makes the whole trail riding experience new and exciting! If your looking to replace your old hardtail, don't hesitate to scoop one of these gems up before they're all gone! It was worth the wait for me.

Strengths:Lots of adjustment everywhere. Brakes are great, as long as you keep up on the maintenance. New SRAM shifters are quick, and the bike is light! (26# for my 19" stock setup)
Weaknesses:The stock Bontrager tire tubes that it comes with are the Lite ones, and they are very thin. I flatted one on my second trail ride with just a small thorn, but it was an easy fix.
I don't consider this a weakness, but I would reccomend seeing if you could order the remote lockout adjustment for the fork. I don't have it, but am definitely planning on getting it.

Bike Setup:Stock, except I changed the pedals to a plain platform.
Bottom Line:It climbs like no other bike I've had or even ridden. I can smoke fellow FS-riding friends no problem on the hills, and as long as I'm not riding over some of the 6" loose cobblestone trails, I can keep up with a down hill for the most part. I've been living in Hawaii for the last 6 months, and some of these trails are brutal, but the bike stands up to it. There's a lot of bike for what you pay for. I highly reccomend it!

Bottom Line:First, I would like to say it's unfortunate that someone has given the bike 1 chili overall because of the difficulty in getting one. I almost overlooked this bike because that one review dropped the Paragon to a 4.33 overall.

Anyway, this setup with the 29" wheels is great. It is awesome over the bumps and getting up hill is easier and faster than ever. I have no problem keeping up with the FS riders downhill either. It is comfortable and and I highly recommend it.

I am 5'10", 185# and have had no problems to date. I ride a 17.5" frame, which is smaller than I usually ride, because of the wheel size. You will not be disappointed with this one.

Strengths:I rode the Paragon at a demo and was thrilled so they told me to buy one at your LBS so off I went only to discover that there'sa none to be found. Soooooo I wrote a e to Gray Fisher and asked them if there were some around 17.5" they said nope and they're working on the '06 models now and won't be out till late in the season. WOW it's really bad to have a manufacture to make a great bike and not have them availiable for people who want them. they're still demoing and saying they're great but fail to say there isn't any to buy.Sooooooo why even tease people about it. I wanted it so bad and think they got a great bike there but bad supplying it.
Weaknesses:none are availiable and now I have to WAIT and MAYBE I can get one

Bottom Line:Great ride! Climbs better than 26". First time out I was able to keep up with the boys and I'm 10 years older (over 40) and don't ride as often. The Paragon takes the bumps extremely well and surprised me even after reading the other reviews before purchase. You won't be disappointed with this bike.

Strengths:For a tall person like myself (6'4") the 29er is the only way to go. It handles the rough stuff and climbs steep slopes unlike anything I have ever ridden before. The big wheels give me more contact with loose surfaces. It just rolls through the sand.
The ZR9000 frame is the lightest, most responsive frame I have ever ridden. Before I installed forks and discs I cycled from Adelaide to Sydney, without any mechanical issues.
The RockShox Reba Race 29er forks are a godsend. I can adjust the springs, compression and rebound. I have handlebar mounted lockout. They are light too: They certainly beat the heavy Manitou South forks on last year's Dual Sport model.
Weaknesses:I ride an XL frame. It's a big bike. When I have the offroad tyres on its 30cm longer than my 63cm road bike. I can barely squeeze it into the car.
The seatpost clamp is too low. I have a Thomson Elite 410mm, fully extended, and it creaks sometimes. Hopefully it won't crack. If it does, I'll get another one on warranty.
29ers are not yet popular in Australia, even though they are available. But getting aftermarket parts is hard. It took months of riding a rigid hybrid cromoly fork before I got my hands on decent suspension forks.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Tassajara 2001. Great bike, but small wheels. 29er beats it hands down.
Bike Setup:I got this 29er frame on warranty when I snapped my Tass frame. It is now set up similar to the 2005 Paragon, as it has Reba Race forks. I have a mixture of Shimano LX and XT parts, and 2003 Shimano XT 4 piston hydraulic disc brakes. The wheels are custom built DT Onyx hubs, Mavic A319 rims and triple butted spokes.
Bottom Line:If you are tall get a 29er. You will never look back.

Strengths:This bike has great traction, speed and stays upright better then any other bike I have ridden. I am a little higher off the ground but feel like I have a lower center of gravity(?). I don't know why, but I can climb rocky hills along side our local semi-pro now. and I don't seem to get thrown around as much with this bike. It may have something to do with flex in the frame. The smaller head tube may let the frame twist a little more giving me a smoother straighter motion while going up steep hills. (A lateral movement softens the impact up a bit?)
I seem to get thrown around on a smaller tighter hardtail frame.
If I do get a little behind on the climb, just give me a little flat area and I am right back on the wheel of anyone. This bike just feels GOOD! The sram shifting is fast too. Double wheel sides don't happen as easy now. I stick to the corners a bit more without losing speed.
Weaknesses:The big wheels gather the mud a bit more, but I should stay out of that stuff anyway. I thought I would have trouble with the techinal stuff but I don't. No weaknesses that I can see.
Similar Products Used:none compares.
Bike Setup:I changed out the handle grips for Dury. I needed a little thicker grip.
Bottom Line:Buy this bike if you want to go fast, get better traction, and roll over anything. Don't buy it if you are hung up on the 26" pass.
