$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Main Street Bicycles | | Strengths: | Durability and strength | | Weaknesses: | sprocket and chain pretty squeaky and loud. | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | well I'm from Michigan and ride this bike around campus every day and do trail riding about once or twice every other weekend. This bike was my first Mountain Bike, i used to ride a GT Fly, but this bike has been amazing for me, everything works well on this bike, the only thing that I've noticed is that i ride a lot in the rain/mud/and even the snow, and the only problem is that the crank, sprocket, and chain are pretty loud. I do some winter trail riding with some buddies, so i keep the bike in pretty good shape before i put it away for the winter. It has been an amazing bike for me, i would buy this bike again, but making sure it has discs brakes one it. Great bike for getting into Mtn. biking i've actually had a few friends buy this same bike, because they've seen what i've done on it/to it and they know how strong and durable it really is. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Except the pedals. | | Bottom Line: | I just bought this bike 2 weeks ago and have put on about 150 miles. I ride bmx, dirt jump and skatepark, and wanted something that felt like my bmx bike. I would definately recomend this bike if you are making the transition from one to the other. Great feel, light, shifts fairly smooth, and surprisingly durable. Dont care for the Bontrager components but will replace as needed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I used to ride BMX, dirt jumping for about 7 years. The hard tail is a nice fit for me. Turning at low speeds is smooth. Turning at high speeds is pin point. I bought the 2009 model, it comes with much better componants, and an adjustable front fork suspension with a lock out. I've been jumping it pretty hard and it seems to be holding out great. I would recomend this bike to almost any body. Beginner through intermediate and even some advanced people could have alot of fun with this bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I tried a few of the bikes mentioned above but the Advance just handled better for me. I put on about 500 miles on it this summer and it held up great. I still consider myself a beginner/intermediate so most of that was easier trail and commuter biking. I'm hoping to upgrade to a full-suspension sometime next year but this was a great first bike to get me into mountain biking. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$225.00 | | Purchased At: | ski rack sports | | Strengths: | cheep. | | Weaknesses: | Crank, wheelsets, pedals, handlebars, stem, grips, seet post, and the bike isnt compatible with disk brakes. | | Bike Setup: | Race face evolve xc crank, Bontrager crowbar handlebars, shimano something clipless pedals, the rest is stock. | | Bottom Line: | I bought this bike towards the end of last season when i first started to ride and get serious about mtb. Naturally i sucked, but even so everything seemed to break after just a few weeks, the crank was the first to go, then the handlebars bent in a very awkward position, The screws stripped in the stem, pedals shattered, seat post also stripped, nasty s bend in the back wheel, and grips fell apart.I brought this bike back to the store to see if a warranty covered anything but they told me that they cover faulty products not abuse. so maybe i was a little rough on the bike. Another downside is if you want to upgrade to disk brakes you are out of luck, the frame isnt compatible so im stuck with v brakes. This bike served its purpose, it got me into mountain biking, but if i were to do it all over again i would have saved up for something better. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I rode trail, single track and mountain with it. It took some nasty falls but has not let me down. I finally bent the stock rear wheel after 2 years of constant riding and a nasty crash, not bad for a sub $300 bike to learn on.
I would recomend this bike to someone starting to ride, the components were durable and never gave me problems, and the frame has withstood the mistakes I made learning to ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$300.00 | | Purchased At: | Providence Bycicle | | Strengths: | Nice Frame, fork works well for trails. Tires are a bit heavy, but good for avoiding small sharp objects such as shard of glass or broken beer bottles. Gear system is decent. | | Weaknesses: | Saddle's a bit hard and it starts to wear away after a while. Fork doesnt have enough travel, and not stiff enough for climbing road hills. Shifting can lock up a bit or sound awkward at times, and it has cheap pedals. You'll slip like crazy. | | Similar Products Used: | first decent mountain bike | | Bike Setup: | stock 04' version in yellow and black | | Bottom Line: | If you can get this bike for 300 or under I'd say buy it and upgrade it as you get better. For me, a new saddle, pedals, and a tunable (but not too expensive) fork are a must. Ive been thinking of buying the Rockshox Tora U-turn. You can adjust the travel from 85mm to 130mm which is great for me since I like riding on the road and on trails. For $225, it's not that expensive of a fork. The whole Gear system works for now, but it is something Id like to upgrade. Id also like to get some disc brakes later on too, but thew v-brakes work fine for now. To me, this is a 250 dollar bike. 3 chilis for value because of its cheap parts, but 3 for overall because they all work. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$350.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Factory | | Strengths: | Frame is durable, seat is comfortable, nice grips | | Weaknesses: | Chain snapped twice, deraileurs bog down and rust easily, tires that come with it are horrible, heavy, not much travel on a cheap fork, paint chips easily, brakes/cables rust. | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale F400, Specialized Rock Hopper | | Bike Setup: | Replaced Tires after 2 weeks and back rim due to damage, new chain. | | Bottom Line: | If you are looking for a mountain bike that you are not going to actually go on any mountainous terrain, then get it. If you like to challenge yourself and your bike, don't waste your money and buy a bike that can put up with a little more of a beating. Only had the bike for a few months and I've managed to nearly destroy it. I'm not killing it, it just won't put up with any abuse. After I replaced the stock tires with specialized Armadillo's, the grip was appreciably better but mud wont stay off the front deraileur or chain causing it to lock on the front chain ring and snap when too much force is applied. Overall, don't waste your money and save up for a better bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Leisurely riding by someone who is learning how to ride, or not an extreme rider.
The bike has helped me become a more extreme rider. All of my complaints are due to how rough I am on the bike.
The complaints: you can see above that I have replaced almost everything on the bike from the saddle to the rims to the tires (Velociraptor) to the grips (Race Face). The stuff is all for biginners who don't ride very often or very hard. Last summer I put on 75 to 100 miles a week when it wasn't broke down. It was broke down often. This year I won't be in that position. The Advance will be my commuter and my new Snipes Elemental will be my play bike.
Elemental = $2500 Advance = $200
