Favorite Trail:Blanket's Creek
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Cycle Works
Strengths:Simple, strong frame, awesome Fox fork, super-responsive Avid BB7's
Weaknesses:Grips are almost worthless, saddle is high-end but uncomfortable, EBB is finicky and can be noisy.
Similar Products Used:Monocog 29'er, Fisher Marlin Converted SS, Rockhopper converted SS
Bike Setup:Stock besides - Oury grips, Shadow V Saddle, Time Atac XS pedals
Bottom Line:2008 Root Beer Rig. Gary gave me an awesome credit on the aforementioned Marlin frame, on which I snapped the chainstay doing something the bike was never intended for - Thanks, Gary! And thanks Cycle Works in Roswell for the excellent service thus far.

This bike will smoke any prissy $3,000.00 26" dual-suspension Caddilac bike on the trail... as long as you've got the guts. If you have one of these bikes and live near ATL, email me and I'll show you. The Rig rolls incredibly fast, and the brakes will buck you like a pissed-off bull if you don't respect them. I actually used the grips it came with on my urban assault bike, they provide decent grip if you keep your bike on the asphalt or in the air. So, not completely worthless. The saddle's... well, it's sitting in my basement, lonely. The stock tires perform much better than they look. I'm still using them after 1 year. The chain-ring protector may not look that tough, but it's prevented damage to my front cog many many times with no more than scratches to show for it. The shock is a Fox, what can I say that hasn't been said here already? This bike is the best value in it's class, period. No frills whatsoever. The monster truck of non-FR, non-DH MTB's.

Strengths:Agile, big wheels, SS if plain old fun, nice tubless wheelset, cable brakes
Weaknesses:Terrible grips and so/so saddle
Similar Products Used:GF Paragon
Bike Setup:Stock expect grips, saddle and egg beaters
Bottom Line:When I broke my Paragon I used the credit to get this bike. Going to the G2 tech was a major change this bike steers so much faster than the Pargon I almost jacknived a few times on twisty sections. Now I am so used to it.

The cable brakes are so much better than hydros. Less care needed, easier to adjust, easier to replace pads. Unless I get a downhill bike I will stick to the cables just work so well.

I love the root beer color and matching wheels slick looking ride.

I was unsure of the EBB but I found it very easy to adjust with just an allen wrench.

Also can easily turn this bike into a geared bike since it is setup to accept it probably would only go to a 1x9 setup if I ever did it.

Fox fork is nice but since I rode it locked out for a while it is leaking a bit of oil but it is under warranty still and I am hard on bikes. Probably just get it pushed instead.

In my neck of the woods this bike is all you need.

Favorite Trail:I can't say because tecnically it's closed
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1299.00
Purchased At:Trek
Strengths:Very comfortable and "flexible" frame for a HT; amazing fox fork on the '09; avid bb7 brakes; seat.
Weaknesses:Tires; wheels; eccentric bottom bracket's ease of use.
Similar Products Used:My first SS and first 29er. My last bike was a '05 Specialized Epic.
Bike Setup:Stock except for Kenda Small-Block-Eight tires, Avid Juicy 7 brakes, Crank Bros. Candy Titanium Pedals
Bottom Line:For the money, I don't think you'll find a better bike. I looked at all the high-end SS bikes out there, and this one made the most sense because it came wit the Fox Fork. Most people say 29er steer funny because of the longer wheelbase - not this bike. It is so nimble on the trail I feel like a 12-year-old riding a BMX bike again. The BB7 brakes were great, but I switched to the Juicys because I was just used to the feel of hydraulic (and I already had a set laying around). The tires suck (like most stock tires) and the Bontrager wheels are already bent all over the place. I'd care about this, but I planed on getting a custom wheelset anyway, so it really doesn't matter. The seat and bars are very nice. The EBB is a pain in the @$$ to adjust, but I guess if you are happy with one gear ratio you don't have to mess with that too often. The lockout on the fork is really great for steeper climbs. The frame has a lot of give to it and feels like a steel frame bike with the way it flexes - very smooth. Best of all, its a 29er, so it just rolls so effortlessly. Like I said, I'm new to SS and 29er, but its my only MTB now and I absolutely love it. Its like learning to ride all over again and it couldn't be more fun.

Strengths:Light Frame, Fast, Fox F80RL fork
Weaknesses:Grips, EBB creaks after the third ride,
Similar Products Used:Redline D660
Bottom Line:This review is for the 2008 (root beer) version.
I love this bike. This is my first 29er single speed. I love how this bike flys in the trails and is comfortable enough to ride back home in the same evening. I would much rather ride the RIG than my 27 speed. The Fox F80 RL is perfect for handling descents and attacking kickers. The 2:1 gear ratio is perfect for the trails and handling steep climbs. For city riding the gear can seem a tad obnoxious especially when attempting to pedal downhill. The grips are weak and need to be replaced and the EBB creaks if you get water or dirt in it.

I love this bike. I use it for XC, downhill, and dirt. This bike can do monster wheelies and impressive stoppies. Great bike and a great brand. Would recommend this bike to a friend.

Strengths:Frame and Fork
Weaknesses:Some lower end parts and pieces
Similar Products Used:Many bikes but in 29er ss only owned a Raleigh xxix
Bike Setup:Stock except for Ergon grips, Salsa Handlebar, and seatpost
Bottom Line:Most of the reviews are on the older steel version, so here's one on the latest aluminum version. (Paint job looks like rootbeer). Frame is top notch. The rake on the front is sharp and crisp and good for XC. Doesn't feel like 29er handling. Fox shock is usual fox perfection however wish the bike came with the fox shock that allows control on the blowoff valve. BB7's are fantastic. Thank god they didnt put bb5's which suck. Have had squeaking issue with the BB but turned out to be the lockrings that hold the BB in place and not the eccentric device which many folks below complained of. Currently Im very happy with the eccentric. Handlebar is too short for a single speed. You need a longer length to pull on during climbs-replaced with a Salsa. Seatpost is crappy, but the other Bontrager parts are above decent (7 out of 10). Not happy with the tires, but Im doing hardcore trails above XC level so the tires probably are spec'd out well for XC. I did make the "tubeless Ready" tires and rims actually "tubeless". If your doing the same expect alot of frustration as well as a little bit of money. Good ride, but I haven't fallen in love with it yet. Certainly looks hot enough to fall in love with though.

Strengths:Eccentric Bottom Bracket. Fairly rugged & responsive.
Weaknesses:Eccentric Bottom Bracket. Weak welds.
Similar Products Used:homemade rigid singlespeed
Bike Setup:Brooks Conquest saddle. Mavic 719 wheelset.
Bottom Line:First off, I'm a Clydesdale- 6'5", 235 pounds. So I'm not the lightest rider out there.

I purchased my first Rig almost 2 years ago, and a year ago I broke my first Rig- the upper seat tube cracked and split just above the top tube. Fisher was quick to replace my busted frame with the same model. Unfortunately I again broke my Rig within a year, this time at the other end of the seat tube, just above the bottom bracket. Fisher once again replaced my Rig, this time with the 2008 model, which features hydro-formed tubing, and a redesign of the problem spots of the seat tube.

The Eccentric Bottom Bracket (EBB) is both a boon and a bane. I've found that I can usually pick up 4 links worth of chain with the EBB, allowing me to swap between an 18T and a 22T in the back without adding any extra chain links.

The downside to the EBB is that it slips if not tightened sufficiently, leading to chain drop at the most inopportune times. The EBB also creaks if dirty or insufficiently lubricated. I've come to rely exclusively upon the spider web teflon grease. At least once every 500 miles I pull the entire EBB assembly out, clean it thoroughly, relube & reassemble it.

While I like the flexibility of the EBB, I think I'd rather go with an internally-geared rear hub on my next bike.

Strengths:Solid. The torque that the frame handlebars, stem have endured is incredible. The BB-5 brakes are nice. Much better one finger breaking than my Hayes FX9.
I once read that 29ers corner like on rails. It is freaky how much farther you can push a 29 wheel vs. 26 in the corners. 29 Wheels roll over almost anything. I don't have any problem launching this bike over logs or rocks.
Weaknesses:The seat tube/top tube weld is too small/weak. Fisher remedied for 2008 with a larger weld area. I broke my frame at this weld after about a year of hard riding. Fisher waranteed the frame in less than one week. The EBB creaks unless you keep it clean and lubed. Same for the stem and handlebar joint. I suspect this is the norm for any single that is seeing regular trail riding. EBB tends to slip with time, which will cause the chain to drop just when you need it most. The stock grips slip after a few rides. I bent the stock seat on the first ride just seated peddling. I also tacoed the front wheet on the first ride with an unexpectedly small side load. Brakes are a pain to adjust while riding/ racing in the wet and sloppy. The pads wore out after one 50-mile race in the rain. I think I probably had to adjust them around 10 times during the race. The Bontrager tires are hit or miss. The provide excelent traction, but are prone to sidewall tears. I have been able to patch the casing though. The seat post was a little flimsy too. I bent it seated and peddling.
Similar Products Used:Fisher X-Caliber 29er.
Bike Setup:Stock except for seat/post and grips. Frame is waranty replacement 2008.
Bottom Line:I've been riding/racing mountain bikes for 21 years and have ridden a number of bikes. The Rig is my favorite yet. The new G2 Geometry even works well with my stock Reba fork.
I would buy this bike again.

Strengths:2007 Model Year: light weight, very clean lines, rides over bumps better than I expect. Feels very responsive.
Weaknesses:My ebb is built a tiny bit crooked, so there is a tight spot when the right crank is forward and a loose spot when the right crank is back. Also seat not terribly comfortable but I'm not on it much anyways.

Bike Setup:stock 2007 Model year
Bottom Line:Super fun. I love the single speed aspect because it removes the distraction of shifting gears - you either pedal as hard as you can or you get off. Also a lot fewer components to buy / break. Reba front shock is awesome, feels a little heavy but only when you carry the bike. Brakes are excellent, love the quick-adjust wheels for shifting the pads in or out. Gear ratio is spot-on for a singlespeed. I'm not a regular rider but I can keep up with my friends on uphills and I'm usually in the front for downhills. On roads I get about three inches away from a friend's back tire and draft the whole way.

Strengths:Fox F29 fork; Tubeless ready wheels; EBB chain tensioning; Avid BB7 disc brakes; Frame geometry; and OMG PRICE!.
Weaknesses:No locking grips; Seatpost design
Similar Products Used:2007 GF RIG; SPOT Longboard; Surely Krate Monkey
Bike Setup:2008 Gary Fisher RIG (Stock) w/ Thompson seatpost; Specialized BG saddle; Ergon SL-2 grips; Time ATAC pedals
Bottom Line:Why?
I've done a ton of research on buying a 29er single speed. For the money the 2008 Gary Fisher RIG is a real winner. There have been no problems with either the EBB or Disc rotor alignment. I've changed the rear tire once on the trail with little or no issues.

Ride?
The bike is very fast. I find no trouble railing through twisty single track. Slow speed turning is very stable. No problems on downhill switchbacks. The bike climbs like a goat. When seated I the front end was glued to the trail. I didn't notice the front end lifting up as I climbed. The Fox F29 fork performed great (as expected). 80mm is more than enough travel for cross-country. Most of the time, the fork is locked out for better out-of-seat hammering up climbs. When ready for rocks a quick flip of the lockout and I'm ready to attack. Brakes perform well, but lack the modulation of hydrolics. I have a set of Avid Juicies I may swap onto this bike, but for now the BB7s are getting the job done. Tires are great. I typically run Kenda Navigals or WTB Prowlers, but I'm going to stick with the stock tires. They are siped (small cuts in the tread blocks) which add a ton of traction.

Weaknesses?
Sure every bike has them (unless you build a custom). What are my gripes. Well the grips slipped a bunch on my first ride. I was changing them to Ergons anyway, but hey how hard would it be for trek to OEM locking grips? The other weakness is the seat-post. My gripe with the seatpost is the size of the Seat rail clamp. TOO SMALL. I have my saddle pushed back to get the saddle in the right position. Needed better support from the clamp which is very short. I replaced the seatpost with a Thompson Elite I had lying around. Much better...

Overall?
There are no single speeds in the $1200.00 range with the same quality or components and ride that would come close to Gary Fisher's RIG. I highly recommend you run out tonight and find one before their all gone. Would I buy another Fisher? Another 29er? Short answere... YES!

Bottom Line:gary fisher makes a great product and the rig fits the mold. this puppy is light, sturdy, and looks hot as hell. the fox fork is perfect for the frame, perfect compliment, and the bontrager components fit pretty well too. i've read of many people having issues with their EBB but i have yet to have any issues with it, if there is a problem with it though, chances are it's because it was a punk kid building it in the shop. the pedals are garbage, throw them out or melt them with a torch. i personally didn't like the handlebars so i slapped some salsas on it but the cranks are garbage too, melt those with the pedals and make some crappy art. the BB7s are awesome, there's not much of a reason for a rider to get the hydraulic juicys. if i could do it over, i'd definitely get the same frame/fork but i'd build the rest myself. the components are good and all but they should be better for the price. i'd definitely recommend it to someone's who's experienced or not experienced in Single Speeds, the stock gearing is perfect but it's still important to find a gearing comfortable to your riding. also as far as 29s go, they're unbeatable, i can't imagine going back to 26s. this bike is really for anyone.

Strengths:Lightweight, affordable, rock solid frame. Fox F29 fork with custom offset is silky smooth.
Weaknesses:Brakes, seat, and grips should be immediately upgraded. Stock handlebars creek when torqued on.
Bike Setup:Upgraded brakes to Avid Juicy 7's, seat to Bontrager CRZ+ Race, and contoured grips. I added Crank Brothers Mallet Magnesium pedals. The rest is stock.
Bottom Line:This is my first 29er and I have to admit I am hooked. While my buddies struggle with rough rocky sections of trails (which we have a lot of in Wisconsin), this bike skates over them with ease. Another thing I have noticed is that although physics tells us it is harder to climb on a 29er, what most people forget to mention is how fast they descend! I find myself blowing the spandex off 26 inch riders in the downhill sections with ease. The big wheels make big bumps feel smaller, which is an excellent fit for a hardtail XC bike. I have crashed the bike twice, hard, and except for a scrape near the rear wheel mount it is fine. I broke 1 rib, cracked 2, bruised 4... the bike is stronger than me, lol.

Strengths:Fun and simple. I've owned many Gary Fisher's and they stand by their bikes with a fabulous warrantee.
Bottom Line:This is a repost from earlier where I stated problems with BB creaking, and I see others have stated the issue as well. Thanks to my bike shop working w/ Fisher tech support, we have a solution, which has held for a couple months so far.

Solution to bb problem is: grease != antiseize. People try to grease the bb to fix creaking, but the physical properties of stainless steel causes galling to occur, which is the source of the creak. This is remedied by using a grease with small amounts of metal particles, aka antiseize. If you dont know what antiseize is, ask your bike shop. Clean your BB and lather the triangle movable portion with antiseize and the problem will go away... for good!

Strengths:Very good product spec for the price. Fork is pretty good, and the brakes are just awesome- the best cable acters in the business. Wheels flex very little, but predictably. Seat is semi comfy for an OEM- usually not the case for me. Grips are a little small in diameter for me- but they don't break down and are comfy. No rattles from chain area! Swift and Silent.
Weaknesses:Tires do not work well for me in dry loose conditions which is all we have here. Others have no issues, so personal preference. Watch the sizing of the frmae and try before you buy online! See below. A little on the heavy side, but the heaviest parts are ones replaced most often by cyclists- so buy light stuff to replace it with. A smart move on Fisher buyers and engineers there- good cost cutting. EBB was a pain to adjust until I read the trick on this review site by Robert.
Similar Products Used:GT Ricochet SS conversion. Many Bontrager products on Treks.
Bike Setup:Bone Stock. Tires are next to go with some new grips too.
Bottom Line:First, if you are buying one of these online- find one somewhere and test for fit. The sizes seem to run small for me and I actually fit a L quite well when all I ever rode was mediums. THe EBB creaked just like everyone elses because I did not know the trick to dismantling it easily (found it here!) after that, dismatle, grease and go. Now creaks were from the bars and seatpost! Dry climate here- creaks will happen. This is my first 29'er and my fears were climbing, handling and acceleration. This bike accelerates like a BMX bike, climbs like a goat (as long as your legs can hold up!) and handles well. It is a little slower than a 26 inch in the turning department, but after two rides I had adapted my turning apex, body positioning and learned the traits of the bike- and it carves.

This bike is great for the person who has converted something to SS before and wants to move to the next step. The parts that wear out are heavy, so upgrading them is a joy and the bike will only get better. It is a tough bike and will last a long time. I plan on racing it next season in some XC and endurance races, I might even toss some slicks on and do an Alleycat!

Strengths:This is a follow-up to my hasty words last week. After riding nasty Red River of the North clay following recent rains, I must take back my criticism of the stock Bontrager ACX rubber. The well-spaced knobs are GREAT in mud and loose soils. Can you say "self-cleaning?"
Weaknesses:Okay, the stock seat still sucks and after a couple more "home remedies" for the creaking EBB it STILL creaks. However, except under heavy cranking, the only sound is knobby noise on hardpan and asphalt -- and pure silent bliss in softer soils!
Similar Products Used:Forgot the Redline Monocog (in a fixie configuration) the last time around -- another worthy alternative for the steel crowd.
Bike Setup:ERGON grips (which are, BTW, very "ergo"). For vastly improved braking, swapped JAGWIRE index derailleur housing for the stock brake housing (JAGWIRE inners too big, esp. for rear).
Bottom Line:Still a great bike and component selection -- deserving of the full five flamin' chilis after some reflection and some mudding (nothing destructive, mind you, just instructive!). FYI, I am 6 feet tall riding a 19" with plenty of room after the cockpit upgrade (and I have a long torso and shortish +/- 33-1/2 inch inseam). Tried the 17-1/2 inch X-Caliber, but it was too cramped. The XL was too tall for my liking, however. Did I mention that the Salsa CroMoto Grande swap for the REBA shaved about a pound and one-half from the stock setup? Add a Terry TiRace Liberator saddle for comfort (with little or no weight penalty) and things get comfy indeed!

Strengths:Great frame and spec's for the price -- even better when you sell the REBA and replace it with a Salsa CroMoto Grande fork! Dialed in frame geometry -- with the exception of the stem and bars. Add some Jones H-bars and some Ergo grips and you're in heaven!
Weaknesses:That nasty crank creak finally appeared after 14 months of riding -- still looking for the magic cure (some of the posted remedies I have yet to try). Stock seat sucks, but it only lasted through the test ride and ride home. Stock tires, also weak off-road, are the next to go...
Similar Products Used:Klein Rascal, Gary Fisher 29er X-Caliber, Bianchi Project 7 ('700c mountain bike' -- or so said the marketing dept) -- I still miss that baby, but not the lack of frame clearance!
Bike Setup:Essentially stock w/Xpedo pedals, Salsa CroMoto Grande [semi-]rigid fork, Titec Jeff Jones H-bars (aluminum 'sellouts,' not the Ti originals), Salsa stem w/ increased rise and reach, Salsa skewers and grips, Ergo grips for main grip area of H-bars and bike trail-friendly 'dinger' HB bell (cheesy, but effective!).
Bottom Line:29ers rule -- and at this price you can dial it in all you want (and still have money to replace the lame-o stock tires, etc.). A ride or two on a RIG or comparable 29er SS will hook you for good -- or you aren't paying attention. The only thing better might be a flip-flop rear to allow for fixie option...

Strengths:This is an update to my last post
Weaknesses:Forget the EBB problem - solved....
Bottom Line:Many thanks to you posters out there. When looking to adjust the EBB, both the local bike shop and I thought the EBB had to be dismantled to some degree. The local bike shop said, "This EBB was a down point to Trek products". I quickly forgot that since they could not figure out how to loosed the EBB and were starting to hit my bracket with a hammer. At that point, I called the technician support to a halt.

Again, thanks to a few posters, this is what I found to be the simple fix to adjust the EBB.
1. Leave that donut-like screw in the bracket. It serves as a backstop to apply pressure between the two wedges.
2. Use the hex screw through the donut hole and into the hex nut. There will be a point where the screwing gets difficult. Great! That is point where the wedges are getting ready to be separated. Just a little more turning on the hex and whoosh.... the wedges slip apart like hot butter.
3. Rotate the EBB to the appropriate chain tension, and retighten.

I was thinking this high dollar bike must surely have a complicated EBB adjustment. NOPE.... Gary Fisher did great with this bike!

Sometimes, I love to just walk by the Rig to simple savor the beauty of this bike...

Some have mentioned about the creaking of the cranks. I too have this on occasion, but attribute it to being the ONLY noise the Rig makes, so it is noticeable. If I were on a lesser quality bike, I might hear many other noises on the bike, and not even realize any crank squeaks.

Happy trails....

Strengths:Sleek, simple, and lightweight - 29's and shocks are great
Weaknesses:That darn eccentric bottom bracket (EBB), less-than-comfy stock seat.
Similar Products Used:Last single speed (SS) was BMX, last bike was 18 speed Trek 850. Much prefer SS's as they give no issues with gear changes or derailleur hiccups.
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock. Added lights, went to Michelin wide road tires (right now commute with bike), changed out both front and back chain rings for greater distance per pedal.
Bottom Line:I am 6'2" and wish the handlebars neck was a bit higher. If I were doing a bunch of trails or downhill’s, then it would be no issue. As it is, I am a commuter.

Except for the commonly noted crackling in the EBB, the bike is impressively quiet. I currently have an issue with the EBB. It is frozen stiff. My local bike shop cannot figure out the issue, nor the store where I bought it (although they were both very helpful with ideas for troubleshooting). My chain needs tightening now, and the EBB just will not budge. After loosening everything, lubricating, and even hammer tapping, there is no movement on the non-riding side of the bracket.

Otherwise, the bike is pretty flashy! I never want the bike out of my site in public. Everything is quick release, and in this city, bike parts are frequently jacked.

I like the position of the fork tension control. It allows me to shift from stiff to cushioned (I am sure I am not using the right terms) while still riding.

I have never spent this amount of money on a bicycle, but I notice a big difference in the ride on this bike from my former $500-ish purchases. I can't wait to leave the islands to actually find a real bike trails! I believe there I will realize my investment.

If any of you wrench guru's have any ideas on the EBB issue, please feel free to shoot me your thoughts at robert.6pence@yahoo.com.

Good day!

Strengths:Geometry is perfect for me, Reba fork is a great compliment for the bike, Avid bb7 brakes are un-beatable for the money and they came stock.
Weaknesses:Eccentric is not the best choice for thes bike. Narrow tire clearance, CHEAP STOCK CRANKS, free hub is not seviceable
Similar Products Used:many many others
Bike Setup:only changed cranks to xt
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for any level XC rider. The fork fits the bike well, the brakes are as good as they get. I have always loved the bb7's. So the stock componenets may not be very light but they get the job done very well, I have done many races and 40+ mi rides with almost no problems. The ECC needs to be cleaned after EVERY slightly muddy ride. The cranks are absolute crap. I bent them using pure force, not kidding. So replace them. The tires sidewall wares fast but they work well with the bike good allround tire. The freehub needs to be replace after 1200 miles not bad but I would rather it be serviceable not wear and replace. 2.2 tires will rub the frame from time to time. Overall, this is a great bike with a good parts spec for the money that will last for a long time to come with little worry.

Strengths:Fork is a nice match for the bike. Just a great ride.
Weaknesses:Eccentric Bottom Bracket. Pedals. Bontrager marriage.
Similar Products Used:Stumpjumer hardtail converted singlespeed
Bike Setup:Stock except I added Time Atac XS pedals.
Bottom Line:Overall great value. This bike is a lot of fun and is sturdy enough to ride in the gnarliest of conditions. It takes the little bumps well, and the Reba is so smooth with this 29’er setup. I found steering and handling to be very good. I agree with other reviewers in that this bike will make you a stronger rider. It can take some rides for your body to strengthen and get into a comfortable cadence on your favorite trail, but stick with it and you'll love it.

Part by part:

Handlebar: Some have said the handlebar is too wide. I disagree. My other ss has wider handlebars, which I prefer.

Seat: mediocre

Pedals: toss them. Garbage. Feet come out when climbing hard. Poor mud deflection.

Cranks: Ok, but I much prefer a through-axle crank. Not very light either.

Tires: The Jones tires have reviewed poorly, but I find on the 29’er setup they perform well for me.

Wheels: I’ve had several Gary Fisher bikes with Bontrager rims and my experience has been that they are very high quality rims. I’ve yet to significantly damage a bontrager rim. I think the wheels are the best bontrager part on the bike

Eccentric Bottom Bracket: Old simple technology desperately in need of innovation. The eccentric is a very bulky heavy part. I’ve had significant problems with popping and creaking sounds. Cleaning around the edges, loosening, globbing grease on the metal sliders, and retightening hard temporarily tames the issue. However I’m afraid of purchasing other cogs because I feel that once I have the bb not creaking, I don’t want to touch it again.

Avid Mechanical Brakes: These are really good brakes. Other than that they require more frequent adjustment than hydraulics, they perform similarly.

Docked a chili for weight and EBB. If the bike were more expensive, I'd dock it another for component choice.

Strengths:This bike has improved my cycling by 10 fold! Climbs like a champ and descends like its got 5 inches of travel. I feel like I'm riding a horse but still agile in the tight rocky sections. Avid mechanical discs take some time to break in but once they do they are precise and responsive. Reba Shock takes the small bumps and big bumps with ease and the lock out is great for riding to your favorite trail on the road. Was skeptical about the aluminum frame but it is solid but not too stiff. Eccentric BB works well also, no need for a 15 mm wrench!
Weaknesses:Seat clamp is poor. Seat falls at least a half inch during the ride. Front hub skewer loosens a bit too easily and wheel can become dislodged (dangerous!). Really need to crank it down. All parts that can be replaced, though

Bottom Line:I love this bike! If you are new to SS or 29ers, this is a great option. If you're an old coot and want something new and affordable this is also a great option. Not many mass manufactured 29er SS come with the reba shock. Great bike for the price!

Strengths:The geometry is very forgiving and balanced. The larger wheels also give it a more stable feel.
Weaknesses:The parts, but then it is a price point bike. If the Rig really gets used it'll need a new bottom bracket and headset pretty early. Also, if the EBB isn't properly torqued to 11Nm it will rotate and you'll drop chains. 27lbs stock? it should have been named the "Pig"
Similar Products Used:No other 29er in the house, just a cyclocross bike and a 26" wheeled C-dale.

Bottom Line:It's a solid bike that will finish rides as well as races. If you're willing to haul around the extra mass in its stock form and nickle and dime yourself getting it lighter... then it's a good value. If you'd rather just spec a 29er the way you want it and be done with it, then I suggest you look at competitively priced bikes like what Niner offers, and there are other brands...

The ride is a little smoother than a 26" wheel set, especially noticeable in rockier sections. I just think it is a great bike and would recomend it to anyone wanting a single speed or wanting to try out a 29er. Straight from the factory, the noise is a huge buzzkill. A liberal dose of Phil Wood grease on every surface of the EBB finally solved the problem. The stock Bontrager seat is awful. Chuck it and replace it with just about anything else.
Similar Products Used:Niner Bikes SIR 9

Bottom Line:I love the bike now but it has taken time to get happy with it. First, the noise with the bottom bracket and then a catastrophic failure of the the front rim (failure of weld) resulting in trashed elbow (I endo'ed big time). The guys at Northwest sorted out the EBB after a couple of attempts and the defective Bontrager SuperStock rim was promptly replaced by Northwest Cyclery and Bontrager/Trek.

I bought the Rig to try out Single Speed riding without spending a lot of money (oddly enough, single speed bikes often cost more than geared, full suspension bikes...go figure). The result is that I am hooked on riding single speed. I have a full squishy, geared bike as well, but I almost always reach for the Rig when I want to go for a ride just about anywhere.

As a postscript, I would like to add that the folks at Northwest Cyclery have been accomodating, courteous, and patient thoughout all of my early "issues" with the Rig. My hat is off to them. Mail order is cheap, but don't forget to support your LBS!

Once you get them moving the 29" wheels roll over loose rocky terrain with little effort. Cornering and climbing traction are excellent due to the additional rubber on the ground. Large wheels also reduce shock of aluminum hardtail (feels similiar to my old steel frame hardtail).
Weaknesses:Heavy wheelset (Bontrager Mustang Disc), cheap Bottom bracket, rear cog, seat, handlebar, stem. Hey, they had to save money somewhere to hit the price, but they did it right where it counts (frame, fork, brakes) The 29" wheels are cumbersome in tight cornering (switchbacks) and do not accelerate as quickly as 26" wheels.

My advice is to buy one of these bikes ASAP, if you do not like it sell it, your buddies will be begging you for it anyways. I like the looks of the guys on the trail: not many SS in portugal, and 29ers even less, so it feels good, and I just imagine they think I am a hell of a rider to atempt to ride "that" up the hill. Of course I push when they get around the corner!

Bottom Line:Being new to the SS 29er rides, I bought my RIG because it was priced right. What has been most impressive in the last five months is how well the bike handles. Your body weight is well over the rear wheel providing excellent traction on the out of the saddle technical climbs. The Rock Shox REBA fork works very well and was simple to dial in. The 29er Wheels help smooth out the bumps making this Hard Tail fairly quick on the descents. For a reliable ride, good times and the most bang for your buck, you can't beat the RIG!!

Strengths:Granted this was my first ride on a 29'er, and single speed too. All I can say is it was soooo much fun to ride.

My LBS buddy put me on it and said "get up to speed and hit that 5" curb, and don't lift the front.", on the first run I couldn't help it and pulled on the bars a bit. The second time i just hit it, and it felt like hitting a fist size rock with my 26" tires.

The frame is stupid light, changes direction easily and quickly. I was expecting some effort turning and accellerating, never felt it.

Single speed was fun, and would be great for rides with the wife/around town, but I like hitting high gear and mashing on the pedals from time to time. Speed is good. Especially on descents. And I don't climb well...

Avid BB7's, Reba shock, 29" wheels... Smooth. Great looking too.

Weaknesses:I would not feel good thrashing on it very hard (I weigh 240#). I can't say I felt any noticable flex, but I wouldn't feel very confident going off any big drops.
I think this bike would be awesome with a 3-spd rear if you could do a wide ratio, say 11, 18, 22? (32/18 stock).
Similar Products Used:nothin
Bike Setup:showroom stock
Bottom Line:All in all, with Avid BB7's, LIGHT frame, and butta-smooth fork, it's a great buy. I would buy it if i weren't quite so far into the Clydesdale range, but I don't think the frame would hold up too long under serious thrashing and 240+ lbs...

If your under 180lbs, like single speed, you'll love this bike.

Bottom Line:After owning this bike now for three days, I still can't put into words how totally comfortable I feel on it. Cornering takes a little extra effort, but other then that, it's like I've been riding the bike forever. Reba fork is highly adjustable and is very very comfortable. If you live in the NW PA area, ask for Jay at Competitive Gear, he knows his bikes and am happy to be in to a shop that cares about their customers and is a big part of the mountain biking community.

I'll be updating and keeping my eye on some of the other issues that others have reported.

Favorite Trail:The Mile-o-stuff at Arcadia, VA
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Dirty Harrys, Verona, PA
Strengths:1.Feel-I rode a steel hardtail prior to my Rig, and it didn't feel as smooth as this. It's the big wheels, they make all the trail stuff smaller.
2.Function - Reba + Big wheels = FAST!
3.Fit - I'm 5'8" and a buck forty five. I thought I'd have trouble getting the big wheels to go fast. I was wrong.
4.Form - Frame is aluminum, so it's pretty hard to mess that up. The REBA fork has stood up to every single challenge and performed fantastically. The wheels are still true and the hubs are holding up fine after a full six months of racing and riding. The stock Bontrager jones tires ROCK on rocks and loose, rooty, technical trails. They are a bit slow and lumbering on dirt roads and loamy surfaces.
Weaknesses:Stock headset is garbage. The EBB makes all kinda creaking noises when it's exposed to moisture, then dries out. Dust seems to make it noisy also. It doesn't slip however, just makes the MP3 player more valuable on long rides. The stock cassette cog and lock ring are very cheap, but any easy fix. The aluminum chainring will last you exactly six months. Just replace it with a Surly stainless steel ring and you'll be golden. I had a bit of trouble with seatpost slippage b/c the finish is a bit slick on both the stock handlebar and the post. I replaced the post with a Thomson and it hasn't budged since. My OURY grips were also twisting off, so I got me some lock-ons and away we go...
Similar Products Used:Nothing comes close - $1000 to beat up on guys who spend $3000 for geared bikes is priceless.
Bike Setup:Stock frame, fork, wheels, bar & stem. Added Thomson seatpost, Bontrager Race Lux saddle, Surly cog & chainring, SRAM PC1 chain, Lock-on OURY grips, pop-lock on the REBA, Chris King headset
Bottom Line:***THIS IS AN UPDATE TO AN EARLIER POST***
This bike rules! I have been 100% satisified with the Rig. Big wheels are the real deal. Try 'em & you'll never go back!

Bottom Line:First thing I noticed about the 29er was the great traction due to the "genesis"geometry. The rear also feels forgiving for an aluminum frame, which I attribute to the 29" wheels. On smooth terrain I don't think the 29" wheels are a big benefit, but once it gets rocky look out. This bike is also very well equipped for the price!

I would recommend this bike someone with an above average fitness level.

Bottom Line:This is an update from previous review. Now thatI've used the bike for some time, in PA, Massachusetts, NY, I'm sold on single speed and the 29" tires are great. I changed out clipless pedals to Wellgo platforms with beefy spikes because I wanted to get off pedals quickly when I can't crank up very steep/rocky hills. I've taken this bike through all kinds of terrain and it performs excellent. While it takes a good bit of energy and power to muscle up the slopes, I've killed guys on geared bikes when climbing hills. I'm wiped out at the top, but can rest fully by the time they get to the top. Consider it a great workout. I've been mountian biking since 1986 and this put some fun back into the sport.

Weaknesses:too bad can't buy ff only
Similar Products Used:i used to ride a 24" bmx, so this is a bit of an upgrade to say the least.
Bike Setup:mostly stock. updated to 180mm Profile bmx cranks, 19t rear sprocket from the 18 it came with.
Bottom Line:I love the 29's and how they roll over just about everything. Unless you're riding flats or are under 5'-5", you'll need to upgrade to longer crank arms. If you're into hard-core technical climbing, get a 19t rear sprocket as well or you'll stall out on the rocks on the steeps. I hope that Fox comes out with a 29er fork to replace the Reba when I kill it, and I'm hoping Mavic comes out with some sweet 29" wheels for when the stock Bontrager hubs give out. I think as far as 29er ss's go, it's the best choice. Unless you're building up that old 26" of yours as a ss, go to the 29" cuz you'll end up there eventually.

Strengths:-simplicity
-built-in chain tensioner in eccentric bottom bracket
-29inch weels handle all terrains
Weaknesses:-rock shox reba fork that comes with it; after a couple of months it started to loose air at every and the slightest bump it came across... even though i'm a leightweight and not having ill-treated the bike
-manoeuvrability when sharp cornering could be better ( adds to riding pleasure in my opinion)
-lately it sometimes pedals without transferring force to the chain...
-Also...bike doesn't like to be washed to often...it emits lubrication that's not supposed to come out

Bottom Line:I enjoyed riding this bike a lot at first. it was a no-nonsense bike, great for exercising offroad also and apparently without major weaknesses.
I'm not sure if I would still buy the bike now, considering the price I bought it for ( mainly due to expensive and unreliable rock shox reba fork)

Strengths:Fast. Faster than you'd ever expect. Fast going up (and we have some mountains here in VA), FASTER on flats, ridiculous going downhill. I was laughing out loud with fear. You'll scare youself it's so fast. I rode a 26" singlespeed for the past couple years and the Rig is so much faster on the same trails that it's silly. I don't know why anyone would ever ride 26" now that I've been 29er-ized. Well equipped right out of the box. REBA fork is very easy to set up. I added the pop-lock to help stiffen things up when climbing out of the saddle. Tires are great on rocky, technical stuff, but a bit clunky on smoother trails. Slow on pavement, but you won't want to ride this thing anywhere but on your favorite trails once you are 29er-ized.
Weaknesses:It feels heavy, or maybe sluggish is a better word. The first time you start riding a 29er, it feels like you are pedaling a tank. I would suggest that you look at your speedometer. That should make you feel better.
Similar Products Used:26' bikes are not even from the same planet. Nothing similar.
Bike Setup:All stock but Chris King headset & Race Face bash guard, Oury grips and Rock Shox pop-lock remote for the REBA fork.

Strengths:Great all around package. It all works, like it was ment to be. Love the 29er wheels and the Bonty tires. This bike corners like it's on rails.
Weaknesses:Didn't like the mechanical Avids. Like the feel of hydros better because the lever will come to a stop. On the mechanical the lever just keeps going. Replaced with Avid Juicy's.
Similar Products Used:First SS & 29er for me, but I'm hooked now.
Bike Setup:Suspension seatpost, lock on grips, Avid Juicy brakes.
Bottom Line:SS & 29er go hand in hand. SS is all about momentum and keeping you speed up. Having bigger wheels helps keep your speed up. I am so much faster on this bike it blows my mind. Honestly I was not ever looking for a new bike, but I won a 29er wheelset and needed a bike to put them on. I figured for the price of the Rig I was willing to give it a shot. Now I am so happy I did. My geared bikes never come out of the basement now that I have the Rig.

I agree with the previous post, it's like the first time I started mountain biking all over again. You see everything differently.

Bottom Line:This is my third SS and is by far the best. I owned a Kona Unit and A. Both nice bikes but the 29’er is sooooo smooth. I immediately replaced most of the stock parts and then later upgraded the wheels. After the first few rides and knew that the bigger wheels solved my problem with 26” wheeled bikes. I feel so stable in the saddle and the bike climbs like a goat. The HT (with Thud buster) and 3” fork feels smoother than my old A SS with 4”of travel.

Bottom line. I knew when I purchased the bike that I would be replacing many of the parts. No big deal I sold the stock parts on ebay /MTBR and purchased what I wanted. Still came out way ahead compared to building up a custom from scratch

For the first 5 rides I stayed on very tame single track and fire roads. Today I took it to the wicked wissahickon trails -- which is very hilly and very technical. I blasted up the hills like I have never done before while rolling over thousands of rocks and roots that always gave me pause in the past. I was utterly exhausted after not much riding but I know this bike will make me the best rider I can be. As for value - all I need to say is I bought the bike for $900 and the front shock alone is worth $450 retail. Strengths:Fast Bike, climbs nicely, gearing(34/18)is well suited to MI terrain. Genesis geometry frame overcomes the 29inch wheel base, and allows for a very quick and nimble ride. This bike will power you though anything you can throw at it.
Weaknesses:Classic 29er issue of initial acceleration... I just have to crank it up at the start. I'll take that for all the benefits it provides. If you like to get air, it is very stable in flight... it just takes a little more effort to elevate it.
Similar Products Used:First time on a 29er SS.
Bike Setup:Stock with the addition of Eggbeaters pedals, and short bar-ends... you will need the B.E.'s as leverage for climbing.
Bottom Line:To all conventional Mountain Bike riders... do yourself a favor, pickout your favorite trail, and give the Rig a shot.

I've owned many bikes over the years from a Ti high-end Hard Tails, to three different full suspention bikes... the RIG is the fastest out of the box bike I have ever owned. Shimano can keep thier XT/XTR derailers, and all the little things that go with them.

I don't know about other SS's, but The Rig is pure (remember when you were a kid on your first bike)FUN!
