Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Capital Cyclery
Strengths:Frame is great at 250 it handles me at the park, the jumps, and the trail just fine.
Weaknesses:Wheels are a little light for someone who weighs as much as me and does what I do. The fork and drive train are crap. I haven't replaced the fork yet but I just put on a new crank and BB. The brakes are ok if you adjust them before almost every ride.

Bottom Line:Good bike to start out with, as you get more advanced you can upgrade your parts.

Weaknesses:a touch heavy. some of the componentary (derailuers, shifters, and brakes) are on the short side, but the frame is worth the compromise.

Bottom Line:This Bike Is Awesome. I have the 06 Model with Manitou Splice Lockout forks and absolutely love them. I got a great deal on the bike too. The brakes on the bike got destroyed fairly quickly however, same with the gears and chainrings. Great Bike for mostly any style of riding. I've taken this bike on cross country trips, dirt jumping and downhilling, which went surprisingly well, despite the fact my brake was torn from the handelbars at one point.

Favorite Trail:Rays Indoor MTB
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $220.00
Purchased At:Rays
Strengths:FRAME,FRAME, FRAME
Weaknesses:Shifters, derailer, etc
Similar Products Used:mongoose ritual, walmart specials
Bike Setup:singlespeed, 15.5" (SM) best geometry
Bottom Line:OK, I bought this bike from Ray, it was one of their seasonal demo bikes ('08). That means this thing took more of a beating than you could imagine, talk about abuse, this bike has been through anything rays park has to offer, which says a lot, because rays has everything. I rode the bike as is through the park for about 5 hours, taking note of all the defects I could see / feel. The DJ3 fork has held up awesome, aside from being a little dirty, it had plenty of life left in it for this rider, I even did several 4 foot drops to test it, the wheels were surprisingly strait and true, and the frame was rock solid, not a squeak or groan. The geometry of this bike resembles more of a XC bike, unless you get the 15.5" model where there is no angle difference between the frame sections before and after the seatpost, though doing a manual takes a bit more work. The brakes are in fine shape, though I suspect the pads have been replaced, but I cant confirm that. The rear was set up to a single cog, and the front derailer was removed, the only problem here was somone removed the bashguard and the largest front gear was slightly bent, but pedalling was smoothe. Finally, the left pedal is ever so slightly bent, I can only feel it when I really pay attention. Other than that, this mullet has been put through the ultimate test, and survived. Anyone here that has been to Rays knows how badly beaten these bikes can get. Brand new, my LBS sells this mullet with a singlespeed set up for 600$. I think this is the best entry level bike out there for the price, and at the very least, the frame is so beefy, you could build up everything else.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Frame
Weaknesses:FORK, Brakes, Components, a pig of a bike
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Recently replaced drivetrain to RaceFace Evolve DH, SRAM X.9 2x9 setup because other parts started failing. Brakes don't work anymore and need replacing very soon.
Bottom Line:Strong frame. Experiences a lot of chain suck (may have been due to worn chainrings). Extremely weak fork (I have to 2007 model with the Manitou Slate). The fork is very flexible and not very adjustable. 2008 Model looks MUCH nicer with the DJ3. The MX2's went squishy after a few weeks of riding and are some of the worst brakes I have used. The seat is super heavy. The Shimano shifter/brake combo works fine but makes replacing only shifters or only brakes a hassle (you can't just replace one or the other so with my new shifters I needed to hunt down some old levers). After ~6 months of hard riding (urban, DJ, aggressive XC), the bottom bracket went and needed replacing.

On the flip-side, the frame has stayed true and handled tons of 5-6ft to flat drops on concrete, countless neck whipping stair sets, etc. Wheels may be a bit heavy but are real stout. The tires are bears and should be switched if you plan on much XC. The geometry of the bike is awesome for my style, 5' 10" riding a medium.

Overall a good bike if you don't mind upgrading components. I would not buy this bike again, however.

Bottom Line:Awesome frame. Fork should be replaced if you're close to serious about riding. I continually bottom it out on ~4 foot drops. Derailleurs and other components are not top of the line. Brakes are decent. This bike is fairly heavy and the tires are monsters! I consistently take drops and jumps up to 5ft and have not had any problems (I am waiting for the fork to go so I can get a new one but so far it's surviving).

The 2008's look sweet, with a DJ3 fork and some other differences. If you like some aggresive XC coupled with DJ'ing and some street, go for an '08 model.

Date Reviewed: June 9, 2007
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $465.00
Purchased At:Dominics Cycling
Strengths:Frame, Wheels, Mostly everything
Weaknesses:Front shocks, possibly front brake discs and both chain derailures.
Bike Setup:Stock. New (wider) seat.
Bottom Line:I weigh in at a solid 265 pounds and geared up with my backpack full of water and lunch for the day I wind up around 280. So when I went looking for a bike on a very limited budget I was pretty happy to see this Mullet sitting in my local bike shop.

Before I even tried to take a jump I replaced the stock spring in the shocks to the largest available. It is still a bit soft for my weight but much firmer than the stock one (rated at like 150 pounds I believe) but even with the new spring I still don't know if the spring tentioner dial is working or not. It just seems to spin freely. I plan on upgrading the fork when I save up the money.

The only other problem I've had is the front brakes rubbing when I do anything other than coast in a straight line. When I pedal, they rub, when I turn, they rub, etc. The bike shop says it is because of the 8 inch rotor combined with a relatively flexible fork design.

I mentioned the derailures up there only because I had some freak problems with my chain getting sucked up but that was taken care of by cleaning the packing grease off the chain and re-lubing with chain oil. After all the cables stretched over a couple weeks of riding I adjusted everything and haven't had any problems.

Oh, the grips are slipping off. I am going to get some new ones.

BOTTOM LINE
I am a big guy and when I jump, I go big and land hard. This bike has taken everything I have given it and come out without so much as a scratch on the paint. Just last week I took a 9 foot drop landing square on concrete. If it was any other bike I could get for $465 I am sure it would be a twisted mess right now.

When I was bike shopping, the other bikes with comparable components, build quality, etc, were nearly twice the price.

I recomend this bike for pretty much anybody. Sure experts will want something more expensive and rightly so, but if you are like me (big) and like to ride the trails without fear of breaking anything, I recomend this bike.

Weaknesses:the only weakness this bike really has are the front disc brakes,(mine are a bit loose right now), and a few of the spokes broke. The stock tires are very weak.
Bike Setup:all stock, except for new grips and tires
Bottom Line:The bottom line is that tis bike is really great to take to the local dirt park, and it can take the hits of huge drops, and it is still great for cross country. The only things i would upgrade would be the fork, the stem, the handle bars, the seat, and the tires. other wise, its great stock.

Bottom Line:I bought this as an alternative to my SCOTT FR bike (7" travel front/rear with marr 66RC's set-up for DH etc) which was becoming to heavy for general riding. Had to change EVERYTHING - which was pretty much expected. Climbs well, descends quickly and is turning out to be my bike of choice for the 7 stanes routes in Scotland.

The frame is great, and everything else is OK as long as you don't expect to do big drops etc.

In summary - good red route bike, and excellent for beginner to intermediate. Needs extensive upgrading if you want much more in terms of extreme terrain. The frame is excellent and makes a good platform to build a reasonably light, strong 'all mountain' hardtail.

Bike Setup:small frame with Marzzochi Drop-off 130's, Mavic 729 wheels, maxxis Minnions (2.35) with XT/LX group with a Hone crank,65mm stem with DH bar
Bottom Line:I bought this bike for the frame and as an alternative to my bigger full sus bike (nitrous with 66RC fork and 7" travel front and rear).

However, before I started upgrading I ran the bike stock and found the level of kit very poor. First off, I found the head angle to be too steep. This bike really needs a taller fork than the 100mm splice supplied. Within a few weeks I had wrecked both wheels, found the fork flex quite scary, and decided I couldn't live with the bars (they feel very 'odd' - relatively flat with a unusual angle). I changed the fork to a drop-off, lifting the front of the bike to a more natural height (66 deg head), put on a 60mm stem and DH bar, changed the wheels to the mavic 729's with maxxis minnion tyres.

This bike now performs the way it was originally designed - absolutely fantastic!

The frame is perfect. I now intend upgrading the brakes from the very poor (this being a relative assessment - I am used to running full hydraulics with 203mm rotors) cable discs to something more worthy of the frame - probably Avids.

Overall - The frame is excellent but the main components and finishing kit means you don't get the best out of the frame. The consequence of this is that you need to spend money to get it to perform the way the frame designer intended.

It should be noted that since buying this bike I have used it for general XC (typically 20mile runs) and fairly simple dirt jumping.Having carried out the changes as described above, the bike has performed perfectly for both disciplines.

If I was rating the frame it would be a 5 - but as a bike I have to knock it down to a 3.

Bottom Line:I must have gotten a lemon, because my components are falling apart on me left and right. in the past year ( and i don't ride all that hard) i have broken a front axel, my crankset had to be replaced, i needed a new cassett my brakes were faulty, my shocks ( and everyone has said this ) are really loose, i don't know if its my form or what but they threaded the front brake cable inbetween the crown/horseshoe and the top of the fork, so one time i bottomed out off a drop, and my cable was busted and a chunk of my crown was missing, i was pretty angry. But then my shifters went on me, i can't shift out of the 2nd gear on the front. When i do, the chain sucks back up, instead of back to the cassett. so now i have to get new shifters, a new chain and crank set ( my second ). So im trading er in, im tired of wasting my money on new components. Bottom line, good frame, replace all components

Strengths:Fisher quality frame; very beefy and very comfortable to ride.. like the componentry you get for the money, but you'll want to make some upgrades for serious use (see my setup below).
Weaknesses:get rid of the crankset immediately. also, I found the flat bars that came stock to be very uncomfortable.. the wheels are decent but not beefy enough to handle hard freeride stuff with just a 4" travel fork..
Similar Products Used:Kona Stinky, Trek Bruiser (test rode only)
Bike Setup:RaceFace Diablous bars and stem, RF cranks with E.13 SRS system, replaced 8" front rotor with 6" for normal use (keep the 8" for DH, FR), Sun Rhynolite/Deore Disc wheelset (on order), Kenda K-Rad, Kinetics, and IRC Trailbear 2.5 tires
Bottom Line:This bike is amazing. I use it for a lot of urban riding and so far it has held up beautifully. The frame is seriously overbuilt and it's comfortable. I like the fork that comes on it stock, though I am considering upgrading to something that's 90-115 mm adjustable. Crank the compression down on the fork to make it stiff. As I said, the crankset is crap so get rid of it. I set up a RF Next LP crank with an E.13 guide and that has worked brilliantly. Overall, the componentry on this bike is not great, but everything is working well for me, and I've thrashed it pretty good.

I cannot understate the versatility of this bike as well. It isn't too heavy so I could ride it XC if desired. Also strong enough for FR and urban riding, which is what I primarily do.

Bottom line: It's like a BMX bike with 26" wheels that's just plain FUN.

Strengths:Value- can't beat it for a hard tail that can be abused w/ disc brakes. Frame- beauty, understated graphics, beefy frame. Tires- nice beefy 2.4's. Geometry- actually is comfortable to ride, mimics their Genesis w/ lower top tube and more compact rear triagle.
Weaknesses:Grips- throw some locking on. Bars- trim 'em down. Fork- upgrade to Firm spring. Not much adjustment besides preload. Chain stay guard (lack of a real)- my paint was all chipped right away, my bad. Brakes- mechanical disc is not hydraulic, but still better than rim in wet. But, I didn't find any of these to prevent me from buying the bike, and they all perform very well right out of the box.
Similar Products Used:Other GF Genesis hardtails, GF Sugar 3+ disc, GT hardtails, Specialized P2, Trek Bruiser
Bike Setup:Mostly stock w/ firm spring and Shimano flip/flop clipless pedals.
Bottom Line:The do-everything bike. Only 1.5 lbs heavier than a GF Marlin means that this bike light enough to xc. And that's w/ disc vs the Marlin's rim brakes. That sold me right there. If you're counting grams then consider it a training ride. Great geometry, the medium fits me just like my stolen GF Paragon, so comfortable. Such a great value, especially if you build up piece by piece, and don't want to throw down $$$$$ right up front. And w/ the subdued graphics, it's a great understated bike to lock up by the pub.

Most bikes feel cramped to me... not this one. The Opie has very poor components compared to the Mullet... and the Bitter's price tag isn't worth the slight upgrade in components... let alone the GED. This bike is the sweetspot in the line. I ride it everyday... both on the street and trails and it was worth every dollar. The forks are a tiny bit soggy for any length of time while riding cross country on conrete or asphalt... not so bad that it's a nuisance... but off-road they are very, very solid forks. The bike is built like a tank with beautiful welds all over. The disc brakes are sweet... but require a tiny bit of adjusting after using the drop outs for the wheels... but once you find the right spot... it stays. Couldn't recommend this bike more highly... not only is it a fantastic bike... it's a great value for the components. Couldn't be happier.

Strengths:value.....tires......color!
Weaknesses:fork, wheels, crankset, bottom bracket, shifters!
Similar Products Used:planet x jack flash, kona sumthing i forgot"scab" i think
Bike Setup:rock shox reba, bontrager big earl cranks, xt rear der, lx front der, azonic mag pedals, kenda blue groove tire in front, nokia gaz on the rear, truvativ isis bb, planet x bar and saddle, deore shifters, hayes hfx disc setup, xt hubs on mavic rims, a goofy 6spd xt cass(don't ask why), bontrager race stem 110mm set at zero degrees for hopping around on and i flip it to ride xc, oury lock on grips, and a set of red anodized bottle cage bolts!
Bottom Line:bike rides ok.......makes for a great trail/trials pub crawler do anything rig. i'm hesitent in going big with it. i'm lobbying to get fisher to do replaceble dropouts on the next series of biggins bikes, like that of the mountain cycle rumble.......but all in all the mullet is the best bang for the buck. it gave me a fun frame to build on and rode as expected, its a great choice over the opie and a better bargin than the bitter. i'd have more of my phriendz riding this frame but there all xc geeks!

Strengths:Frame is alright. Nice bar and stem. Seat is comfy. Hayes brakes are awesome.
Weaknesses:Tubes on the frame are small. Fork is weak. So are the rims and cranks/bottom bracket. Pedals make clicking sound after a few hits to them.
Similar Products Used:Specialized P.1, Felt, Haro X.1
Bike Setup:Mullet with Bontrager Big Earl Freeride Cranks, ISIS Gigapipe BB, Matrix 750 rear rim cause i tacoed the last one, Kenda Stick-E rear tire cause the stocker sucks, Deore LX front derailluer, thicker oil in fork cause im 150 pounds and can bottom it out on a 5 foot to flat drop, Thorn resistant tubes,
Bottom Line:This bike is a good bike to start out freeriding and dirt jumping on. I am 14 and I like this bike but the components arent the best for freeriding. They can be replaced as you go down the road but after a while the frame will need replaced to just cause of the small tubes and small gussets. The seat tube gusset on it does make it look mean but once again the small tubes make the rest of the bike look like a mild freeride bike. I have totally trashed the stock bottom bracket and cranks and rear rim. I have broke the valves in the fork 3 times and broke the coils once. This fork is not meant for anything major because the biggest thing I have done is a 8 foot drop to nice tranny. The bottom line is that this bike is a great buy and with some upgrades can serve you well for a long time until u decide to go big and buy a new frame. I am upgrading my bike and then Im gonna buy a Norco Shore hardtail frame and then it will no longer be a Mullet but thats just my preference. I think that Gary Fisher could have built up the frame a little bit more. So if you a mild/beginner freerider this bike is an outstanding deal and I suggest it. Just be prepared to buy some aftermarket parts along the way. Cheers!

Strengths:the price, very nice geometry, weight.
Weaknesses:the fork is not the best, but it is o.k.
handlebar is to low for me, but for someone it is strenght.
Similar Products Used:scott yz1, da bomb molotov (my friend spent about 2000$ on it)
Bike Setup:original bike setup
Bottom Line:if i am able to buy bike again, for same money, i would buy the same bike. very nice bike for his price range, the parts are o.k. but his body is perfect. in croatia bikes are to expensive, mullet costs like kona shred, author a gang or haro escape 8.1, about 800$ but i was lucky and get it much cheaper... my plan is to spent about 400 - 500$ on my mullet, and get a dream bike.

Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:The Bike Doctor
Strengths:Very nice geometry and overall nice feel, price.
Weaknesses:fork(but i have to admit it was way better then i thought it would be), and the crank has no bash
Similar Products Used:just switched from bmx so FIT Pro
Bike Setup:Stock 05 mullet but getting a sherman flick, a raceface evolve crankset, switching out the brakes for xt hydraulics, and maxxis holy roller tires.
Bottom Line:This is a very nice bike and i love it a lot and its such an awesome deal because of the price. My friend spent $150 more than me on a trek bruiser 2 but all my friends agree that the mullet is so much better because the marzocchi mz comp is the worst fork in the world. If you freeride, urban, dirt jump or anything like that than this is the perfect bike for you. some of the components arent the best for freeriding, such as the fork and crank set and even the brakes but can still get the job done and are easy to switch out because you are not spending a fortune on a bike that you are just going to replace the parts on. But because these components arent the best and because of the price this is the perfect bike to customize because the frame is perfect and the price is unbeatable. so the bottom line is if u want a freeride hardtail and want to customize it then this is the only bike for you and if you want the best price and service get it from the bike doctor because they give you free lifetime adjustments and tune ups. (and they only charged me $550 instead of $600)
