Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Bicycles, Etc.
Strengths:Solid frame for low $$$, genesis geometry, shifters, Fisher reliability & quality
Weaknesses:The seat is harder than the rocks beside the trail, brakes are a tad weak, front derailleur
Similar Products Used:old specialized (now resting in pieces)
Bike Setup:Serfas Reactive Gel saddle, Coda supsension seatpost, Michelin Jet rear tire, otherwise stock
Bottom Line:It's a good frame to start from. Some components aren't great, but what do expcet on a $400 bike? I'm planning on upgrading brakes and fork when i get some dough.

Date Reviewed: June 30, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:An alternative to standard frame geometry without paying boutique prices.
Weaknesses:Plan on getting a saddle that fits you, like you would have to do with any new bike.
Similar Products Used:I've owned a lot of bikes, and ridden a lot more. Fisher's Genesis geometry is the most stretched-out I've ridden.
Bike Setup:Wheels I built myself. Stretched out the bike even more with a longer stem. Sachs Power Grip Extreme twisties. I'm keeping the low-end Shimano 8-speed drivetrain. Specialized Body Geometry saddle.
Bottom Line:Test ride the Fisher Genesis line, or Trek's new bikes, to find out what a stretched-out frame geometry feels like (talk 'em in to putting on a longer stem if you have to). If a bike like this fits you, it's a bargain, and the Marlin is about as inexpensive as you can get with this geometry. If it doesn't fit you, there are all the other manufacturers out there making bikes for you. 5 chilis for value. Ignoring price, 3 chilis because this was never meant to be the top-of-the line. The Marlin is a good bike with a frame geometry that is hard to find.

Strengths:Great Frame. Light. Good Handling
Weaknesses:Drivetrain Sucks, replace it with Deore XT. Handlebar breaks and scratches easily. Shocks are crap.

Bottom Line:This is a great entry level MTB. The drivetrain is horrible but for $200 or so u can get a great one. Must replace shox with some super smooth Bombers.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:Victoria Bikes
Strengths:Frame is strong and light weight. The RockShox is fine for 185lb or less riders. Great deal! Upgrade potential! Excelent trail bike!
Weaknesses:Seat sux but I'm dealing with it cause I hardly ever sit on it. Components are a little heavy but at $450 u can upgrade and still have a great bike @ a great price, or my name's not Andy Fisher.
Similar Products Used:Old Cannondale, Gary Fisher Aquilla (still own)
Bike Setup:handbar extentions, water bottle cage, Shimano PD-M545 clippin pedals, i'll eventually get a new seat too.
Bottom Line:Great starter bike! I owned a Gary Fisher Aquilla before this bike and still own it, so now I'll always buy Gary Fisher bikes. The Marlin hangs with the $1000 bikes easily.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $415.00
Purchased At:Budget Bicycle
Strengths:Frame, Price, looks great, solid foundation for upgrading over time, WTB Raptors are a good all-around tire.
Weaknesses:Seat, chessy brake pads, lower end components.
Similar Products Used:GT, Trek, Cannondale, and older Fisher's
Bike Setup:Selle Italia seat, XT brake pads, stock components, and Shimano ATB pedals.
Bottom Line:Great bike, with a great frame, super stable, feels firm but very controlable, plan to upgrade components this winter to XT, because a frame this good deserves it. Bike takes all you can dish out, and still wants more. Climbs like a billy goat. Bontraiger rims are more than adequate, Boni' bars are super comfortable, and the Rock Shox Jett is quick and one of the reasons a bike this good can be this great of a value.

Bottom Line:I already posted an entry, but just want to caution everyone on the seat...Not only is it hard, but it may break if you hit something as common as a curb too hard. I rode off of a curb and the seat began to shake, click, and the finally the metal post separated and i almost landed flat on my face. BE CAREFUL. I already purchased a new seat, which is a hell of a lot more comfortable too.

Weaknesses:The seat. I took my serfas off of my 15year old Panasonic bike and am much happier as is my butt
Bottom Line:Tested the TRek 4900 but could not see the rationale for the much higher cost. Since I am not a professional I felt the value of the Marlin coupled with the ability to upgrade makes it a great value.
Fantastic geometry, excellent frame and best of all it is "BORN IN THE USA"

Favorite Trail:Schulkill Riv.
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Cross Cycle of Southbury, CT
Strengths:Genesis Geometry--especially for taller riders (I am 6'2"), light and strong frame for the price, Gary Fisher lifetime frame guarantee, solid components for entry-level bike
Weaknesses:RockShox fork bottoms out for heavier riders on aggressive trails, horrible seat (replace before leaving the store), questionable tires for wet surfaces
Similar Products Used:Trek 4500
Bike Setup:New seat, water bottle cage, otherwise straight-up stock
Bottom Line:If you are not willing to spend $1000+, you should buy this bike hands down. And even with those expen$ive bikes, you will get 15% better components for 2x the price. Especially if you are just getting into mountain biking, the Marlin is the way to go. The frame is easily upgadable as well. Don't take my word for it--ride one and you'll understand.

Strengths:Great quality for the money, lightweight, extremely stable.
The best value I could find in the sub $600 market.
Weaknesses:ft. fork....this is my first ft. shok'd bike, and the jett is softer than my buddies Wal-Mart special.
Similar Products Used:GT's
Bike Setup:Bone stock
Bottom Line:No hills here to speak of, so it's all urban. I really like the balance of the bike, and the only things I would change are the ft. fork(far too soft, and I'm only 180lbs.), seat, and tires(great for offroad, but lugz are a little agressive for concrete)

Purchased At:Roy's Cycle Shop
Strengths:Solid frame, quality parts, nice color schemes
Weaknesses:Seat, hurry up and replace the seat!
Bike Setup:Just changed the seat. Thinking about changing the pedals too and adding and odometer.
Bottom Line:The last bike I bought I was 12 years old. It was an old Raleigh that weighed a ton. I had no clue what bike I wanted to buy so I just started looking around, asking questions and reading reviews. When it came down to it, it was between the Mamba and the Marlin. I opted for the Marlin because of the aluminum frame and better overall quality parts. I never really rode a trail before and I think this is the perfect bike to start with. You can not beat the price of $399. The 2002 model just came out and the only thing thats different is the fork. I rather save 70 bucks and get an amazing bike.

Bottom Line:I think it's the best bike one can buy under 500. Perfect for a weekend warrior. If I had just a little more money
I would have gotten the HooKooEKoo, though. Or if I had a lot more dough, I would have gotten Mt. Tam!

Price Paid: $430.00
Purchased At:Black Mountain Cycle
Strengths:Overall weight, ergonomics, dependability
Weaknesses:Brakes, seat,
Similar Products Used:GT
Bottom Line:Overall, I'm very well pleased. For a weekend rider, its perfect. The bike is built on a great foundation. Lots of room for personal upgrades. I'm really into motocross. If I get into mountain biking as much as I like motocross I'll have a great foundation to build on. For now, its perfect. If your looking for a great starter bike or you're looking to personalize a bike with your own components stop by your local dealer and take a glance at it.
The gears and the brakes are not the highest quality on the market, but if you want the highest quality you'll be spending a lot more than $450.00. Stability feels great!
Front suspension has already saved me a couple of times. Since I've owned it I've received lots of compliments from my friends on overall appearence as well. When I told one friend (GT owner) how much I paid, he was astonished. I think for overall value, its the most "bang" for the buck.

Bottom Line:I haven't purchased it yet and that's why I need info about what shoes I should use and what I should add to it. I'm kind of a beginner so I need as much advice as possible. I've read all of the reviews and the two things I don't like is the weight problem where you have to change the fork and the type of saddle it has, but since I haven't purchased it yet I wouldn't know.

GREAT beginner bike, not a bad intermidiate bike. I like the fact that Upgrade as I go is NO problem

Genesis Geometry frame is awesome. 5'9 200 LBS. I still got the XL frame and feel real good with it, even though I probably should have gone smaller.

Strengths:Genesis geometry, low price, aluminum frame. Fork and tail are equipped for disc brakes if you really want them.
Weaknesses:Seat post was way too short for me, had to purchase a longer one. Stock components aren't the greatest, especially the front derailleur, but those can always be upgraded.

Bottom Line:i love this bike. at around $420 you cant beat it. ive abused it some and its taken it well. genesis geometry will work well for you if you get the appropriate size. im 5'8, 150 lbs and found the small frame worked best for me. easily a great bike for the beginner, and would highly recommend to the intermediate. perhaps not for advanced. if your a die hard and have a couple more hundred bucks, the giant rainier or fisher hoo koo e koo are good bets. keep ridin'.

Strengths:Great all-around, good value. Nice frame to upgrade.
Weaknesses:Some components aren't as nice as I'd like, but to get a bike like this at this retail price, you have to compromise, and i think Gary Fisher made great comprimises.

Bottom Line:this is my first bike in a bout ten years of having no bike to ride. I purchased this bike and also another wheelset with road tires. I must say that I haven't had so much fun, ever. i tested several bikes and researched components and the result is that the marlin has much more to offer, starting with an awsome frame (lifetime warranty). If you're an experienced rider you may be unhappy with the quality of some of the components, but for someone on a budget or not willing to go all in on their first bike, this is the one. i imagine I'll upgrade the fork someday, but it's still a decent, acceptable fork. The drivetrain seems to work great even after the first 400 (125 offroad) miles I've put on this bike.

It has my "beginner rider" endorsement. Go ride this bike.
