i finally broke the wheels, which would go out of true most every day, and the fork should have been replaced long ago, i think ill put a cheap axel on there. both replacements probably have something to do with the way I rode, though. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$620.00 | | Purchased At: | Alpine Hut | | Strengths: | LX rear derailleur, grips, 8 speeds instead of 9 | | Weaknesses: | Acera front derailleur, wheels always have to be trued, Manitou Magnum fork, saddle | | Similar Products Used: | 2000 Raleigh M80, 2000 Fisher Sugar 4 | | Bike Setup: | stock with RockShox suspension seatpost, bar ends, Primo platform pedals | | Bottom Line: | The Acera front derailleur is absolute junk, the wheels become untrued after a couple hours of aggressive riding, and the fork always feels like it is bottomed out or stuck in one place. However, the LX rear derailleur shifts beautifully, your hands stick like glue to the grips, and I am glad that it has 8 speeds, as that is less sensitive and allows a much sturdier chain than a 9 speed. Don't buy one if you are even going to do little jumps or drops, but if you do jump it, use platform pedals, because they are stronger and you get a better grip on them. I don't like this bike, and keep in mind that you get what you pay for. I almost forgot, but guys, if you want to have kids, buy a different saddle! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

While some people may be picky about the small stuff, they simply have grown snobish because they are used to riding bikes three times as much. Overall an excellent price spec. | | Weaknesses: | THE SADDLE!!! A rock would be more comfortable. Go out and buy yourself a selle italia or something. If you don't your butt will be toast after a day of hard riding. Needs an upgrade on the front derallier. the Atlus just doesn't do the job. | | Similar Products Used: | trek 6000 | | Bike Setup: | Icon clipless pedals, Selle Italia Prolink gel saddle | | Bottom Line: | A Sweet bike for the money. And it doesn't have genisis geometry which I despise. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

A blessing in disguise, you might say. I lost my first love during a traffic accident(no not a person.) My first Fisher bike, of course. A long story made short, it involved speeds of 70 miles per hour and a crappy Target peddeled bike rack. Anyway, this bike is explosive on trails out of sharps turns, and frustrating on climbs. Not because of the bike, but because you always find yourself at the top waiting on your friends to catch up. $820.00 | | Purchased At: | Clarence St Cyclery (price is converted to $US) | | Strengths: | This is a review for the 2001 Model bike. It has very good Judy XC shocks, Deore front and rear derailers, strong Pro-Max brakes, stiff and light 6061 Aluminium frame. Very sturdy on the rough stuff. Double walled rims (Vuelta Vision Eyletted wheels, grippy Chameleon tires) etc... The paintjob is awesome. The Bontrager 5 degree crowbar also looks slick. | | Weaknesses: | Have had the bike for four weeks. Not experienced enough to find weaknesses. But reading previous reviews from 2000 and 1999 model bikes the saddle was suspect. The vendor replaced the stock seat with a Bontrager seat before I even walked out of the store (on my request). Most of the weaknesses pointed out by earlier model buyers have been resolved thanks to this kind of feedback (new equipment list). No problems with the front or rear derailuers. Brakes are super strong (always have been), and clipless pedals now standard. | | Similar Products Used: | I was tempted to buy either the Trek 4500, 4900, or 6500. Would have gone for the latter if the Tass did not have Judy XCs. The latest 6500 has variable setting Manitous and was somewhat lighter. The Tass looked like the better all around value proposition. One of the Tass's on display had disk brakes but I opted for the standard Pro-Max. I was close to originally buying the 4500 and was leaning away from Gary Fisher (even though it is owned by Trek), but it was a last minute decision to go for the Tass and I am not regretting it. | | Bike Setup: | Stock as above. No changes planned. | | Bottom Line: | I bought this bike as a beginner after agonising over the Trek choices. I settled for the Tassajara and know this baby will go anywhere I want it to go. The colour scheme is wicked, the bike is solid, the updated equipment list is better than ever. It is one of the best hard tails money can buy. The bike is only as good as its rider and as I improve, this bike will be able to take even more severe punishment.
This bike will hold a straight line in the worst conditions (rocky, deep rutted downhill runs), in the wet, and on varied terrain. The Judy XC Shocks probably have a lot to do with it. Its stability has left me wondering where I would end up if I attempted similar terrain at speed with lesser bikes.
For someone that was hell bent on buying a Trek, I will tell you to go out and give the Tass a test ride. I would never consider buying a full suspension bike after this bike. Change the seat before you leave the store.
If you are a beginner or intermediate rider potentially looking to become a total extremist, this bike will suit you. No need to upgrade to an advanced level later on because this bike already has the goods that could leave others above its price tag for dead. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It can be a pain in the ass to carry up steep hills. It rides great and once i got a few luxuries (seat and grips), it felt great, too. I think i will always have to have a manitou fork. The low end magnum comes standard, and it feels nice. I am looking real hard at a sugar, but i will probably stay in the fisher family. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I would also recomend this bike for anyone my size (6'3" 245 lbs). All other bikes that I tried just didn't fit comfortably. Gary Fisher's Genesis geometry has a longer top tube than most other bikes. So a longer rided can just upgrade with a longer stem to give you a perfect fit. This bike is fun to ride, fast, and very stable down hills, and very efficient up hills (thanx to the Genesis geometry). Great bike for beginner to intermediate. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I put this bike to the test a couple of weeks ago on Yancey's ridge in NC (a known bike eater - check out the reviews). This bike held up better than my friend's >$1500.00 bikes. Took everything I could throw at it - never let me down once. Front shocks never bottomed, wheels and tires held up and the drivetrain worked great even completely covered in mud. I have complete confidance in this rig. The only complaints I have are the front derailleur seems to get confused every now and then and the brake levers feel cheap. I replaced the stock seat as soon as I could and added a suspension seatpost. I looked at just about every brand of bike that I could and the Tassajera is hands down the best value out there! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'm 6'5" 230lbs and the XL Fisher's fit better than any othr bike. The shop had the seat so high, I couldn't reach the pedals. People slam the front derailleur, but I have had no problems. The shock post helped a lot (since I couldn't afford a full suspension). Tried the Sugar 4 and din't see the bike as a triple the price ride. Almost bought the Raliegh M80, but this had much better components. First time out I had a big time spill. After I got my breath back, I checked out the bike and the only thing I could find was the rear rim was a little out of true. The bike should have been scrap after that crash. Needed a strong bike, because I know that I'm gonna wreck. So far so good. Climbs great and no-name brakes work great. I checked out every bike in this price range and Gary Fisher was the best. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$399.00 | | Purchased At: | Copeland's Sports (I know--but it was soo cheap!) | | Strengths: | I got it for a song and it's relatively light (noticeably lighter than the Mamba that wasn't sale-priced). Solid components--LX rear derailler, WTB Velociraptors, Manitou Magnum. | | Weaknesses: | Nasty 1-piece steel chainrings and the fork leaks a little oil. The seat could be better, but it's not torturous. And Copeland's doesn't put their bikes together very well. | | Similar Products Used: | My buddy's Trek 6500 | | Bike Setup: | STOCK. I'm gonna steal the 'raptors for my Kona and my girlfriend gets Chameleons. I chopped an inch off each end of the handlebars. | | Bottom Line: | This is my girlfriend's bike, but I've been riding it for a week now and it's FUN! Especially since it's about 3" too small for me and I can throw it around like nothin'. BUT, it sucks to climb hills on a bike that's too small. The acid green paint job is neato and the rear derailler shifts quickly. The front's a little slow going up a ring, but it's plenty fast coming down--and that's when you need it. The riser bars measured 24.5" which was a little much on a 15.5" frame. The fork's a little soft for me, but it's probably fine for my girlfriend. I got it on sale at Copeland's for $399 during Labor Day. Now is a good time to buy '00 bikes because they're making room for '01! The Tass is a solid trail-worthy bike and it looks totally cool! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The Trek 6000 comes close but the colours that the bike comes in are a real turn off. That's another thing that the Tassajara kicks "tass" in, the sweet colours and general styal of the paint-job and decals. However, If you are a weight weenie this may not be the bike for you, but if you are looking for something that is solid and feels good to ride, this is the one.
Whether you are on a budget and only have $500 to spend or not, this bike is a gem, especially when you consider the frame is guaranteed for life. from berkeley Date Reviewed: July 14, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | wilder ranch, santa cruz | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | good value in certian components, strong xc ride with a few modifications. the magnum is a great 1st timer fork, low maint. and feels good. the acid green color is cool, with a slight rasta overtone in the stickers | | Weaknesses: | geometry a bit rough for in between sized people like myself. seat, pedals, bars, and front derailleur are pretty lame. and if i'm not mistaken, it's really just a trek right? | | Similar Products Used: | specialized hardrock and fat boy cruiser, crack and fail something or other. | | Bike Setup: | stock, with shimano 545's, profile fr riser, quick release seat clamp, and a fisik saddle | | Bottom Line: | being 5' 8", i would have bought a small frame if i could do it over again. the guys at the shop insisted that the medium would be my ride, but i feel the standover is too tight and i could benifit from a smaller overall geometry. the problem is that the stem and bars on a small make it feel really tight (haivng tried one later), so you would need to swap them out for something roomier. get a 90mm stem and a good riser (1.5") and you'll be fine on the small frame. if you are tall or have a large inseam, the stock setup should be great. unrealatedly i find the head tube suprizingly long for a y2k bike.
like others before, the pedals are disposable, the front derailleur is cheap and the seat is painful. you could pick up a xt or lx front d for quite cheap and it would be worth the money. and at the rate clipless pedals are going for these days, there is no reason not to get some.
coming from a bmx background, this bike feels a bit odd for high speed spazzy single track riding and jumping, but it climbs really nice and if you're more of a xc purist on a budget i think you would be really happy. i find the handling a bit slow, but this is a fisher...
i also did some extensive road riding on it (with slicks and what not) and it performed well. if you have a bit more to spend, the kai tai is really worth considering, harnesing the benifits of genisis geometry plus lighter and stronger components (and frame).
all around, a good start into xc riding... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Clifton, VA Date Reviewed: July 11, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | Whitetail and Observatory Hill | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Strengths: | SOLID RIDE! Complete feel. Great frame that excells at climbing, downhill, or level single track. Manitone Maganum operates like the Rock Shock Judy and is almost as light. Rear LX derailer is of good quality. VelcoRaptor Tires handle well and rims are a bit heavy but can take a solid beating. Raiser bar has a nice feel to it. Crank, Shifters, brake levers, V-brakes, and pedals are all no-name or entry level but get the job done nicely. | | Weaknesses: | After longer rides the seat starts to feel more like a punishment then a seat. The stem is way to high and takes away from the control of the bike, make sure you get that dealt with at the dealer. Front derailer sucks. Rip it off and slap on an LX or XT as soon as you can. Clipless petals are a must after you master the toe clips, if this is your first time ridding stick with the clips for a while, once you're more experienced clippless petals are a must. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 6000, GT Outpost, Specialized Rock Hopper, GT Agressor, Giant Rainer | | Bike Setup: | New stem. Soon to be XT front derailer and new set post. Clipless petals also on the way. Everything else stock. | | Bottom Line: | If you are looking to spend around $500 on a bike, BUY THE TASSARJRA!! Best bike in this price range. After going through Giant's, GT's, Trek's, Cannondale's, and Specialized bikes in the $500 range I couldn't find a bike that felt more complete. This bike even out preformed (in my opinion) most of the $800 - $1000 bikes. There is something solid about this ride that can't be duplicated. The frame is light and dependable. The Manitone Maganum Suspesion is high in quality and has taken some extermely brutal terrain. After riding this bike for 3 weeks I've tried things I would of never thought I'd do in my old GT. A very balanced bike that makes the rider feel confident on screaming downhills and hard-to-get-up inclines. A friend of mine who was on his first mountain biking trip was timidly going down Whitetail's trails until we switched off bikes. After that I almost had problems staying up with him (and I've been riding for at least three years now). Quote, "I've never felt so good on a bike." Shortly after he tryed to ride off a small cliff. Needless to say the Tassarjara had to retire for the day after the crash but was ready to go the next morning. I could rave on and on about this bike, telling personal story's about how the bike has out handled and out performed all of my expectations, but I'll leave that up to you're discression. If you are looking at an intermedate bike, you must at least try it out. Lastly, It's a great bike to upgrade componentry on as you the rider get better (not to mention more money) and still have a complete ride from stock. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The longer top tube is great for larger riders as well. Also the light graphite grey this bike is painted is beautiful. | | Weaknesses: | No name brakes, harness pedals, basic monitou shocks. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 6000, Raleigh M50. | | Bike Setup: | Bontrager stem, and seat post, clipless pedals, and upgraded brakes. | | Bottom Line: | Excellent bike for the money, and a good buy. But as others said before, get rid of these stock harness pedals, and invest in some clipless pedals these bike deserves. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Charleston, WV USA Date Reviewed: June 20, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | Anything that has no trail | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | Great components - STX trigger shifters, Shimano RX derail, etc, etc, etc. The front shock alone sells for almost $200. For a $550 bike the equipment is fantastic and comparable to several higher end bike specs! Buy it - don't hesitate. You'll never look back! | | Weaknesses: | Seat sucks, but all factory seats do. Replace it first and save your butt and reproductive capabilities. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 8000. Specialized Street Stomper (1987 model - I've been at this for a while) | | Bike Setup: | Factory equipment (mostly) plus new Specialized GeoMetric seat, Gary Fisher bar ends and I'm looking into new pedals and cleats. | | Bottom Line: | I researched web sites, factory materials and biker's opinions - this bike is the best in class that I found in the state of West Virginia. Sure there may be some obscure small manufacturers popping out some better bikes, but it's hard to beat the specs on this unit. It looks cool too (which although is not very important, does have a slight bearing). Great intermediate bike (may to too pricy for infrequent riders) and will hold up to races and frequent rides.

The guys from Mission Cycles in Bonita (San Diego) are the absolute best shop. If you are a tall rider, this bike is for you. The geometry just makes this bike "feel" so good to ride. Try out other bikes first, then ride this one, you will notice a difference. I you are a heavy rider and prefer chromoly, this bike's aluminum frame will support you just fine, plus it has a lifetime warranty anyways. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I rode this sucker on the trails and on the street! It tears both of 'em up! Great Manitou Magnum SHOCKS and a wonderful frame for the money! | | Weaknesses: | The tires that come with the bike suck! It felt like I was stuck in a mudpit on the street. | | Similar Products Used: | ALL demoed Trek 6000 Specialized hardrock A1 comp fs Specialized rock hopper | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for different wheels | | Bottom Line: | What more could you ask for for a mere $529??? ALUMINUM FRAME! MANITOU SHOCKS! GARY FISHER NAME!!! Just don't get too confident. I became very confident on this bike and tried to ride off of a cliff. Not very smart. But I didn't learn. Pretty light for a bike in that range. Rides even lighter (because of the geometry?) | | Weaknesses: | Only two. The seats sucks a$$. 5 minutes on the seat and you find yourself standing the whole time. The front derailleur sucks. I had mine changed out before I left the store. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for seat and derailleur. | | Bottom Line: | I rode just about every bike in the store. Everything from the $200 price tag on up to $2000 price tag. Money was not an issue but I still settled on this one. It really carries you well, especially if your a larger guy like me. Rather you've owned several bikes before or this is your first, you'll love it. You'll never get that all too familer feeling that you paid too much for something that wasn't that great. Some trouble shifting | | Similar Products Used: | A Cannondale in the same price range/setup... it just didn't feel as good as the Tassajara did. | | Bike Setup: | Stock, will be replacing saddle with Terry Butterfly. Replacement brake system, front derailleur pending... must do my homework! | | Bottom Line: | This is my first mountain bike, and my first real bike. Previously, I've owned Huffys and Murrays and other toy-store bikes, but this is the real deal. I was all set to go with the GF Wahoo, but am glad that I didn't, cos it's all about that front suspension. I knew it was well worth the price paid the first time I went over a pothole and didn't feel it in my crotch. My only complaint is that the brakes seem to be a bit too... delicate? I threw down my bike after one particularly grueling ride, got back up to push off, and found that the front brakes had locked up. Now, there's just no reason for that to happen. It's only happened that one time, but in my opinion, that's one time too many for a new bike. Front derailleur is also a bit suspect, too... have also had some trouble shifting lately, but then again I'm also about due for a tune-up. The selling point, I must admit, was the color. Also, my best friend had a '97 Tassajara that she had good things to say about. Overall, I'm pretty happy with my bike. I think I'll be even happier once I get a new saddle... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Great price. | | Weaknesses: | Front derailleur is junk. The seat sucks(but what stock seat doesn't?). | | Bike Setup: | Stock except upgraded to a serfas seat(cheap but a lot better). | | Bottom Line: | A great bike for what you pay. I don't use the front derailleur too much so it doesn't bother me very often. It has already survived some good wrecks without screwing up the rims or anything else so at this point I will give it an A+ for $500. I would definitely suggest this bike to anyone who is thinking about getting into mountain biking, you won't be disappointed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Going to get Shimano xt brake levers/shifters, xt or xtr rear and front derailleurs, seat post shock, front disc brake, and maybe the shimano xtr-v brakes. | | Bottom Line: | After reading all the reviews for the 1999 tassajara, I was convinced this was the bike for me. I loved the price for what I got and the ability to upgrade most of the components. I guess that was the trade off for the price. The front derailleur sucks but again, for this price, you get a great bike and 'ok' components. The seat is the first thing you are going to want to replace. I can't stand it for more than 5 minutes. A seat post shock could help as well. And, I would also switch out that front derailleur right away but not until you wear out the stock components first. No need to waste money on parts you don't need to replace yet. Get this first before running off to go get a $2000 cannondale like I was about too. You'll thank me later. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Conyers, GA Date Reviewed: March 25, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | Union Grove Rd., Lithonia GA | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Strengths: | First off, allow me to describe myself as a dirt biker who is new to "real" mountain biking. By "real" I mean high-quality, high-dollar bicycles, not Huffys or other bikes like that that I have previously owned. Dirt bikers are tough on their equipment. I wanted something that could take some abuse, because I bought the Tassajara to get in shape and train for dirt bike races with, so I'll be riding the same heavy-duty trails that I ride my dirt bike on, and bulldogging the bike. Since my last mountain bike, a long time ago, was a Huffy, I come from the school of thought that it is outrageous to spend several hundred dollars on something as mechanically simple as a bicycle. But I knew I would be abusing it, so I invested in a high-quality bike. I really love the Acid Green paint because it matches my Kawasaki dirt bike and the green contrasts well with the black; it looks good. The tires are nice and aggressive; love the tires. The fork is pretty good, considering the price of the bike. Fit and finish is good as well. The grips are nice and gummy. Brakes very adequate; I'm able to lift the rear wheel in the air with ease by pulling on the front brake lever. I like the brake levers; perfect length for one-finger operation, and they're nice and snappy. The rapid fire shifters are crisp and notch from gear to gear very well. The front deraileur on the end of the cable, however... | | Weaknesses: | The front deraileur, as many people have noted on the '99 Tassajara reviews, is junky. A lot of missed shifts and clanking noises. Someone was watching me ride it and the deraileur messed up when I shifted and the person remarked "Don't tear that thing up!" because it made a horrible noise when it skipped. So as you can see, it really is ornery about shifting and makes a bad sound sometimes. I'll probably replace it if I get serious. Also, the seat is hard. I'll probably replace it as well, and add a suspension seat post. The rims aren't that great, I slightly bent them in my first 30 minutes of riding the bike. | | Similar Products Used: | Huffy Mt. Storm (early 90's?)
Kawasaki KDX 200R dirt bike | | Bike Setup: | Bone stock, ready for very muddy, rocky, rooty, rutty, aggressive Georgia trails, and minimal street riding. | | Bottom Line: | I thought mountain biking was supposed to be an "extreme" sport. Maybe it is, I don't know. I don't mean any disrespect. But on my first trail ride, I went over the bars and tweaked the back brakes so bad that the rear wheel wouldn't turn at all and I had to CARRY the bike back to my truck and tinker with it. This was only about 2 hours after purchasing the bike! Needless to say, I was pissed. Then I discovered I had slightly bent the rim as well. Don't tell me that that kind of riding isn't condoned, because that's how Fisher and everyone else advertises their bikes; for "extreme" riding. Lucky for me, my bike shop's first tune-up, which includes brake adjustment and wheel truing, is free. I was riding at a high rate of speed on bumpy terrain, and the chain whips up and down violently and it sounds pretty bad, maybe this is normal for a bicycle. Maybe I just need to turn it down a notch with the aggressive riding, since I'm coming off of a dirt bike. Hey, I told you I would be abusing it! If you are new to MTBing like me and want a quality bike that will show you exactly why "real" bikes are better than Huffy or other department store bikes, and not break the bank at the same time, buy the Tassajara. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I don't know the ins and outs of mountain bike technology but figuring out what's best and what isn't is pretty easy. From Fisher's web site the Tasajara looked pretty good. Manitou magnum fork, Deore front & rear derailleur, Deore shifters, cheaper Acera crank, but a 9 speed HG50 cassette. No-name brakes, acera rear & no-name front hubs, Bontrager Corvair rims & WTB Velociraptor tires. Well most of that was accurate except for the Acera front derailleur, Alivio shifters, and only 8 speed (model ?Alivio?) cassette. Okay, stupid me, I didn't really know what was what till I got it home to look at it. Based a large part of my decision to get it on the componentry being pretty much equal to a Raleigh M80 except for the crank, brakes, & hubs. I like the Fisher bikes but...now I'm taking it back, unfortunately paying a $50 restocking fee, and spending the extra $25 on a Raleigh with what I thought I'd get on this. Lifes great man. Took me 33+ years to learn to juggle too. Oh, well. I'll give it 4 for value because the M80 beats it but it's the next closest thing on the market, and a 4 overall because it's really a pretty nice bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
