Favorite Trail:Birchfield Park
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Dominic's Cycle, Tempe AZ
Strengths:The 29er wheels are a heaven inspired innovation
Great climbing geometery
Good weight and the frame is stiff
The Juicy 7 disc breaks are much nicer than other styles I've used before
Weaknesses:The shifters on the Juicy 7 set up are terrible. Switch to rapid fire if you can. The thumb shifter gets in the way when you are really pushing hard up and down hills
Similar Products Used:Paragon 1996
Bike Setup:All XT front and rear deraliers
Avid Juicy breaks and shifters
Bontreger Race Seatpost and Crowbar handlebars
Rock Shox Reba Race Fork
Bottom Line:I am a big rider (6'4" / 210 lbs) and the 29er frame and tires are a big man's dream. You don't give up anything on single track and the added circumference on the rough terrain gives you an easier ride over the technical stuff. I'm much better technically now and I feel like I got a great bike that will last a long time. I am the envy of all the guys I ride with.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years

Purchased At:Golden Re-Cyclery
Strengths:Climbs like a goat! The rear geomitry genesis desging is great. The BB and Shimano default components are excellent.
Weaknesses:I bought the bike used and the bars and head set felt like a lady had bought the original bike. I traded out for a icon riser bar, and it's a little better. Before, it was a little squirly. The Judy Race front fork lost its response after a year.
Similar Products Used:Trek SL8000. I was riding Trek 1999 SL8000 before this bike, and the Gary Fisher is a better climber. The Trek SL8000 was a little bit better down hiller.
Bike Setup:XT rear, LX everywhere else
Bottom Line:Excellent hard tail.
A bit squirley. You need to setup bars and headset.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Bikes USA
Strengths:Quick handling. best fit I've had in my 14 years of riding. VERY durable. Won't beat you like an M4. Amazing bike for the price
Weaknesses:Rough on the single track, I was faster through the tight stuff on an F1000.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale F1000, Raleigh Mountain Bike (steel and yeah it was a slug) Specialized Stump Jumper, Specialized M4, Trek 6000
Bike Setup:Stock, I've replaced a few xt derailers claimed by the trail but other than that nothing has broken except cables and tires. Thinking about a new shock though
Bottom Line:Great bike, especially if you can find one used (seen them for as low as 400.00. I have one of those odd ball body types (short legs, long torso) so I thought I needed a custom frame. NOPE when I saw this bike for less than the Litespeed frame I was going in to be measured for, I jumped on it and I've been beating on it ever since. Sell the bike? NEVER you'll have to unwrap it from around that last tree that claims it. After riding this bike, spending 3000.00 on a hardtail is, well, nuts. If you're a single track type and don't plan on riding anything else, look at a Cannondale or an M4 with a suspension seat post. Otherwise stretch out and enjoy the ride!!!

Strengths:It still rides great, even tho I neglect the heck out of it.
Weaknesses:its owner :-) lousy tires, lousy (but functional) pedals
Similar Products Used:Fisher Aquila, Fisher Katai
Bike Setup:replaced the front derailleur after it broke (after two year), some Panaracer Fire XL's, stock otherwise
Bottom Line:I ride every day, whether it be to the grocer, to class, the lab, or some weekend trail riding. This bike, with a minimum of maintenance, has been riding strong for three years.

Not only has it held up great, but it rides like a dream. The geometry works wonderfully for me, giving me all the control I want and comfort to match.

I have no idea what the newer Fishers ride like, but with as much as I love mine, I hope I never have to get a different frame. Component upgrades, here I come!!

Anyways, I love my bike.

Favorite Trail:Where there are no cars
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1000.00
Strengths:Light, accelerates well, climbs well, Genesis geometry is stable on the descents. Mostly quality parts. Resilient frame.
Weaknesses:Bontrager RE-1's are the worst pedals I have ever tried. Stem was too short. even with the 23,9 inch top tube. Bontrager rings shift poorly.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale F1000, Fisher Marlin, Schwinn Moab 1, GT LTS-2, Giant ATX 980, Haro Extreme, Norco VPS Fluid, I forget.
Bike Setup:Stock, +: Kenda Klimax Lite tires, longer stem, LX cranks, SLR saddle, XT cassette, Yeti grips, 747 pedals.
Bottom Line:
Great XC bike. Great value for your money. I have had it for 2 years and I still love it. Genesis geometry requires some getting used to. It can be a handful in tight turns and switch backs, but the short chainstays are great on the ascents and the long top tube provide good stability at speed.

This is a hardtail after all, so the rear end can be unforgiving. (But I do run the tire pressure at 50 psi and an SLR saddle.) That's why my other bike is a Norco VPS.

Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Paragon,stock?
Bottom Line:I'm an old Road Racer, I've got the grey hairs and the Simplex derailleurs to prove it! When my Custom built Italian lady died I needed a new machine, now! Well then! my LBS had this used Paragon is stock. The original owner had put so few miles on it that there was no wear on chain or chainrings. The colour was awesome the fit very good. For the price it was irresistable. with a shorter stem and my old ideale 90 leather saddle it was fit to ride.
What a fabulous ride! I'v sampled other MTB's an old steel Specialized, A GT i-Drive, Etc. But the Fisher Paragon rode Like a champ, light nimble and rugged. after a few months I think I'm getting a good feel for what this baby can do. My old Cyclocross skills come in handy off-road, I've yet to crash or loose the bike in a turn. It's not as stiff as my old Columbus steel steads.
I'm a big, strong, heavy rider, and have abused a few road/cyclocross/touring bikes. the Fisher does seam to have some side to side flex in the bottom bracket when I stomp on the pedals. I do get a sharp spike of "Road shock" up through the saddle from time to time. I might try switching to a Brooks Conquest saddle.
Unlike some reviewers I've had no trouble with the front
Shimano LX derailleur. My Paragon came with WTB motoraptor tires, I've not used any WTB products before, man are these things tough. I do have a favorite brand of tires, but can't justify the cost of chanig till I can get these stupid WTB to wear at least a little. The Shimano Deore LX brakes do a fine job of stoppoing but do not give me the fine feel of the high end side pulls I'm more used to. I may soon try Cane Creek Direct Curve Brakes. It also came with Grip shifters which I've never used but do like a lot.
All in all I'd say the Gary fisher Paragon is a splendid machine. Well built, nicely finished and impressively light. A very Good buy. Especialy at the price I paid. If you are in the market for a Aluminium hardtail even at full price the Paragon is a very fine value.

Bottom Line:This was my first mountain bike and for the cost an excellent way to start into racing for only a little money. The bike is feather light and very nimble on everything from switchbacks to jumps. I think if you are either short on cash or just getting started this is the bike for you. The stock components are quick to be outgrown though, so either look to upgrade them after some hard training or upgrade to a higher caliber bike.

Purchased At:Cycling Concepts
Strengths:Weight (or lack there-of)
Weaknesses:Tires (Stock Mountain Wilderness Tires - Good for street only, and then dry - Replace asap!!)
The only other gripe I have is about the front lx derailer. While mostly quick shifting, the chain gets sucked up in between the frame and the forward gears when shifting. I'm sure it's just the newness factor and nothing a little adjustment can't handle; but, annoying on a steep uphill.
Similar Products Used:Giant ATX-880, and a Gary Fisher Suger 3( demoed on a trail ride through Cycling Concepts in Rocky Hill, CT -- great full suspension ride and a fantastic shop, BTW)
Bike Setup:Shimano XT Rear, LX Front - Shifters and V-brakes. EVERYTHING else, rims included, is Bontrager ('cept for the ahead set)
Bottom Line:This is a fantastic bike that is a major step up from my Giant ATX-880 (Which I loved!). I've not had as many trail rides with this bike yet (6 maybe so far, most in the rain) but I do know that the wheels suck as far as mud goes. I like wides tires (2.1s on my fisher) but the tread is horrendious! However, tires aside, you will NOT be disappointed with this ride.

This bike flys! And 10" logs are no longer a problem! I'm actually releived that I bought this bike I could barely afford.

Strengths:Light and fast
Holds up to my abuse and keeps coming back for more.
Weaknesses:Finish - lots of paint chips
Broke one pedal (my LBS swaped it out for me)
Seat - broke that in a light crash...
Front DR is LX
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:This has been a great bike for me. I've put over 800 miles on it in my first year and I ride really hard and crash a ton. This bike has never let me down. I've knocked the rims out a round once, bent the rear DR hanger once (I've got a spare just in case now), broke the seat on a light crash and a pedal broke when I smacked it into a rock (lbs got me a new set free). I'm only 5'10 1/2" and the Genesis works great for me. I climb and descend like a pro, now if I could just get my stamina up....

LX Front has a been making some noise and is a biatch to shift up...

Bottom Line:
I beat on this bike almost every time I ride and it just jumps up, thanks me and asks for another.

Two words of advice for you:
1. Ditch that seat if you want to be able to walk normal.
2. If you ride anything other than hard pack, get new tires.
The front derailleur isn't the best and will be gone shortly.
Otherwise, the component selection is excellent for the price. The Genesis geometry has increased my confidence on tight single track.
This is a great looking bike and with a few changes, is just about ready to race straight from the box.

Great for hunkerin down for the climb and sweet on the downhill. Love the light Bontrager Race rims and the Judy Race shock. Still trying to find the stand-up sweet spot in steep climbs. I have over 1,200 miles on the bike and I don't have any nasty complaints (except the tires). The only replacements have been the brake pads and tires. Did I mention that the tires suck? Front derailer gets out of whack every now and then, but the shop I bought it from does free adjustments. Excellent ride for the dough.

Strengths:The frame, of course - Genesis!. It´s stiff and light, but not uncomfortable. Judy Race fork, Bontrager Race Wheels. Because of the frame it is a great climber but also a good descender. It´s also very light (10.8 kg with Schwalbe tires on) and accelerate very easy if you want to do a move from the rest of the pack.
Weaknesses:The Bontrager saddle - too soft for my butt. LX front derailleur - was bad from day one, and broke down after 4 months. The tires, Bontrager Nanoraptor, that´s not the kind of tire you use in southern Sweden in the winter.
Similar Products Used:Univega 506, Kona Munimula
Bike Setup:XT front derallieur, Selle Italia Nitrox gel, Wildgripper tire for winter use, Geax Sedona 2.0 for training at the rest of the year, and Schwalbe Fast Fred for race.
Bottom Line:This is a xc-bike and if you are a freerider most of the time, this is not a bike for you. But if you want to do some race and if you want to train regularly, then i recommend it highly. One big reason to buy the Paragon 2000 is the wheels. And it is very fast wheels stock on this bike for a low budget. Just compare to other bikes in the same price range and you will see that other bikes have mavic 221 w/LX - not so fun compared to Bontrager Race w/black revolution spokes, 24 front and 28 rear.

Strengths:Everything that isn't a weakness
Color is really cool over the 2001 colors
Weaknesses:Re-1 Pedals broke EASILY, Nanoraptors- not enough traction for the quick changes in Iowa, Saddle - didn't fit and have bent two other sets of rails, LX front derailer, brake pads
Similar Products Used:Specialized, Giant, Trek that are comparable
Bike Setup:Sid XC, 535 pedals, sram chain, XT front and rear, San Marco STEEL railed saddle, Velociraptor tires, barends, KOOL STOP Brake pads, would like to have XT shifters
Bottom Line:Ditch the LX, stock pads, pedals and depending where you live at the tires. Once you do that you got a flyin' bike. The Genesis is terrific. Handles so well and the only reason I put a Sid on it is because I bought a cheaper bike and was going to buy a different fork anyway so i got a better instead of a step down. Light bike that won't let you stop riding. Reason for a 4 on the value is because of the brake pads, cheap pedals, and LX front derailer.

Bike Setup:2001 Paragon/fully stock
Bottom Line:This was my first real and expensive mountain bike to ever buy. I'm used to riding those bikes from Walmart, so obviously the Paragon was a much better upgrade from my past bikes. You can really tell the difference from a cheap bike and a good bike. With this bike there really are no serious weaknesses, but I would have to say that for $1100.00 I would expect better components in some areas. Although I'm not too experienced with high quality mountain bikes I still can tell the difference between what is good and what is junk. The only thing I would consider junk on this bike would be the front derailer. It's a Shimano deore and it doesn't shift to my liking, but actually I don't shift my front gears too often anyway. I mainly keep it in the top gear. Everything else seems to be sufficient for the price. If your going to compare this bike to others within its class and price range then I would consider it a good bike, but definitly check out the other bikes out there (Klein Attitude Comp or Giant XTC SE 1). This isn't a bad bike, but I've already switched over and bought me a Klein Attitude Race. I'm waiting anxiously for it to come in!

If you can find an older frame, I'd say go for it. This thing is awsome. With the upgrades that were made on it, it probably weighs about 26 pounds. Strengths:Ok. I went from a Specialized Crossroads Cruz to this bike. Not only is it light weight, it handles as if it is part of you. The "creamsicle" color scheme is terrific!
Weaknesses:Same as all bikes I tried. If you are 6'1" like I am, you may need to spend a few more bucks to get your handlebars at the right height and angle for your particular riding style. And if you are no longer 20-something like me, you may want to think about aftermarket seating options.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper A1 Pro FS, Schwinn Moab 1, Schwinn Homegrown; Raleigh M-800

Bottom Line:This is one terrific desert runner! Very quick, very agile! There must be something to the highly touted Genesis Geometry.

The Tyranno's do a terrific job gripping the trail (although their tread may be more agressive than one really needs around here, they are solid performers when you are on a learning curve). The bike shifts smoothly, the brakes exceed all needs, and the front shock handles rough stuff rather well (even though I did manage to plant the fork into a small bolder on a going-too-fast downhill, resulting in one spectacular endo! Not the bike's fault though.)

Oh yeah, this was my first bike with clipless pedals. I still bear a scar on my right thigh from one of my early clipless related crashes. Goes with the territory I suppose. Clipless are definitely worth having, but you should be prepared for a "dork" factor as you get used to having them. (Not to worry though ... turns out that almost 100% of riders have similar stories about when they learned to go clipless.)

Bottom Line:Aside from the tires and weak pedals(which I swapped to Time's) this is a great XC race bike. It takes getting used to coming from a Specialized Rockhopper which has a shorter TT and twitchier handling. This bike is stable going up and down but is a little slow on the switchbacks (because of the wider turning radius) but is great overall. It's perfect for short legs/long torso bodies.

Strengths:Smooth and very light ride. Bike always wants to go fast, no matter what the conditions. The wheels are very light yet very strong. And the LOOKS of the orange and white scheme are the best out there. 2000 models are much nicer than the 2001. Someone better tell Gary that the new 2001 models paint schemes are a step back.
Weaknesses:The orange decals have not held up well. They are chipping and/or peeling off at a fast rate.It climbs great, but sometimes the front end gets very light on a steep angle climbs.

I can sustain 24+MPH on this thing and ride with and sometimes pass people on their italian steel, then head into the woods and ride thru anything. The ride is plush, the saddle is the best I've ever had, and I've had many!. You can ride the Paragon for 8 hours (and I have), and still feel fresh. This bike will be appreciated by beginners as well as seasoned riders who want one bike to do it all. I have not taken it on any real downhill stuff yet so i can't give any feedback on that, but for X-country I wouldn't want anything else.

Bottom Line:The frame is light and strong, and for aluminum rides pretty good. It shifts flawlessly for the most part and the wheels are capable of taking a severe beating. I chose it over the klein for two reasons- I was able to get a much better deal on the fisher($850 versus $970 for the klein)and the fisher gave me a lot more confidence going down hill. Genesis geometry does feel different than most bikes. If you get a decent deal on one of these bikes it's a great value and it uses the same frame as the ultra expensive supercaliber. I've beat the hell out of mine for the last 3 weeks on some nasty trails and the wheels are still true and the the bike is in one piece. For the $900 and under category it's the best hardtail on the market in my opinion.

Strengths:It's stiff without being harsh, light but still has a lifetime warranty for the frame, no extreme stupid butting. Judy race fork is plush, and All Travel is great. Nanoraptor tires are great for hardpack. The Paragon's Genesis geometry is ultra-stable at speed and is very confidence inspiring when bombing downhill. Last but not least, the wheels are very light and look great!
Weaknesses:No matter how much you try, you can never beat Shimano drivetrain components, so give us a real LX crankset and not some so-called "Bontrager" crank subcontracted by another company. The chainrings are a notch below the real deal. The pedals are actually VP's and they suck. Genesis geometry is NOT good for tight singletrack, even if Gary would like you to believe that. LX brake levers are outdated and don't meaure up to XT or Avid. Lastly, I know the top tube's long, but the 90 mm stock stem is a joke.

Bike Setup:Stock, except for the barends which I moved over from the Univega.
Bottom Line:After trying a few bikes I came to the conclusion that the Paragon was the one that suited me best, nice control, excellent brakes, robust frame. I have rode it over 300 miles so far and I have no big complaints. The only things that I don't like is the LX brake levers which are to narrow between the grips and the levers, I keep scratching my knuckles on the "sharp" edges inside the levers, maybe it's a matter of getting used to them. Made a quick fix with some plastic tape. The second complaint is about the chain that gets a bit too noisy if it isn't recently greased. First I thought it was because the chain was rubbing against the front derailleur but that was not the case. How the sound gets produced is a mystery for me. About the Nanoraptors, I switched the tires with my previous bike and I think I will keep them on.

I would like to agree with previous reviewers about the climbing abilities of this bike, I noticed that by moving a bit backwards on the saddle it's more like you push the pedals forward than downward which feels more efficient and it's easy to switch between the positions. I like the saddle more for each day, I have tried several saddles and the WTB saddle with it's "comfort zone" is the best so far.

(Some useless background to the review)
I had the unpleasant experience of breaking the rear derailleur on my Univega while biking through some rough vegetation but the bike was pretty worn down anyway. I liked the Cro-Moly frame on the Univega, awesome control. However this forced me to purchase a new bike, who can live without a MTB?!? Unfortunately I came aware of the bad timing in buying a bike at the end of the season. There was not much to choose from in my area. The Gary Fisher Paragon was the most suitable bike I could find, even with the ~$200 rebate it was a bit above the pain threshold to suit my wallet.

Bottom Line:This is an awesome bike. The geometry makes it so it climbs great and is also really stable downhill. I can climb up hills that I could never make before, while still sitting in the saddle, and almost never feel like I will endo on the downhills.

A lot of people think the tires suck but I like them. I commute on it as well as ride singletrack. Of course being in the front range of Colorado most trails are pretty hard pack.

To compare it to other bikes I tried: it is very similar to the Trek 8000 but I just liked the feel of this one a little better as well as what I think are better wheels on the Fisher. The Stumpjumper felt lighter and faster but the riding position felt very unstable. Hard to keep the front end down while climbing and always felt like I was going to endo going downhill. The Moab just road like it was way to heavy for me.

I think this is a great bike for the money. Any serious biker should consider this bike, it is probably more then a beginner would need, although it would last them a long time.

Bottom Line:This bike was made especially for me. I've never been a bike that climbs like this one. Everyone is knocking the tires, but they suit my riding conditions just fine. I race on alot of really hard packed trails with lots of big rocks. The tread on the tires is alot faster than the big knobbie tires on most bikes. They don't work quite as well under wet conditions but their not unusable. The Judy Race seems to eat anything that I can throw at it. I recently raced with all of my Full Suspension friends in the down hill and found that with the right amount of concentration I could keep up with them and a even ahead of them at times. I really like the rim set up and it takes quite a beating without any problem. I log about 150 off road miles a week and the bike holds up well without any major upkeep. The only thing I've had to do was to take two links out of the chain to reduce the chain slap on the frame. Much thanks to the Gary Fisher design team for a great bike on and off the race course.

The Paragon would be a great bike for the weekly racer or even for the advanced rider who rides a few times a week.

Acceleration is awesome on this bike. No other bike I rode accelerated like this. Someone earlier made a comparison to a motor cycle, that's exactly what it feels like.

Climbing is good and solid, and descents are confidence inspiring. A good mix of components almost guarantees the gear you want will be available right now during fast transitions to a climb.

The factory installed tires bite, I actually punctured one on my first outing. The grip is terrible. I went with the WildGrippers and they have been excellent in both muddy Tillamook forest rides and in Central Oregon's loose and sandy conditions. I definately recommend these.

I would highly recommend this bike to anyone who has difficulty finding a frame size that suits them.

Strengths:1)Frame is near perfect - bombproof welds, and solid as a rock.
2)Riding position is superb-Genisis geometry
3)The Judy Race shock is a great chioce the Paragon (but, at the 100mm setting it makes the front end seem 'high').
4)The Avid 20 brakes - killer brakes - absolutely great.
5)The drivetrain is LX/XT w/ a Bontrager Race crank, and performs, well, like a Honda Civic.
Weaknesses:1)Tires - WTB Nanoraptors - These are NOT the tires you want on this bike. Replace them immediately with good set of Contis, Specialized, Hutchensons, etc...anything else. The Nano's do not do justice to the potential of the Paragon.

Gary Fisher reps, I know you are you reading this. You need to do something about these really crappy tires....

Similar Products Used:Klein Pulse Comp - Trek 8000
Bike Setup:Replaced tires, but otherwise stock. Judy Race shcok at 100mm for now...I will return to 80mm on next rebuild.
Bottom Line:Darn fantastic XC ride for a hardtail. I replaced the Nanoraptors with Hutchenson Pythons, and I swear this bike now rides like a laser beam through just about anything.

This bike 'feels fast' - which, all things being relative, translates into - you can ride a little faster into turns and corners, brake just a little less or a little later, you can turn the thing almost by just thinking about it, and on downhills you just seem to 'glide' over a lot of really nasty stuff.

I'll also mention this, after 275 miles of logged and timed laps on a local XC trail/race course, my average speed on the Paragon is about 1 full mph faster than while riding my Klien...that means a full 3-4 minute difference per lap here.

I love this bike, and for the money you are getting a great all around fantastic value.

Similar Products Used:I test rode the following bikes prior to purchasing the Paragon: Specialized Stumpjumper M2 Comp & M2 Pro (17", 18", & 19"), Schwinn Moab 1 & Moab 2, Klein Attitude Comp, Trek 8000.
Bike Setup:My Paragon is stock except for Time ATAC pedals, Panaracer Fire XC pro tires, and a Shimano UN-72 bottom bracket.
Bottom Line:First, let me point out that my Paragon is a serious step up from my previous ride. My old bike is a '97 Trek 850 with cro-moly frame and rigid fork, 7-speed Gripshift, and Shimano Alivio-level components (not even V-brakes!). Please keep this in mind as you read my review.
I purchased my Paragon in early May and have approximately 700 or 800 miles on it already, 50 miles plus per week commuting (and other miscellaneous pavement riding) and 45 to 60 miles per week off-road. (I think as a reviewer I need different/more choices under Duration Used.) The Paragon's double-butted aluminum frame is very light and very stiff. For long pavement treks the ride can be a bit harsh, but the WTB SST.X2 saddle (which is very comfortable) and the Rock Shox Judy Race help alleviate the frame's tendency to transfer every anomaly in the road directly to my body.
The geometry is quite responsive and Genesis’ longer top tube/shorter stem arrangement makes descending less nerve-wracking and more exhilarating. As for climbing, I have not noticed a dramatic difference in what I can climb, though the Paragon’s shorter chainstays and subtle switch in body position over my Trek has provided better rear-end traction. Since I climb like I’m “on a forced death march” (in the words of my friend Rich) and tend to hammer up a hill in a big gear instead of spinning, I am thankful for these differences.
Stemming from my rigid fork background, I cannot say much about the Judy Race in comparison to other suspension forks. All I can comment on is the vast improvement having the suspension fork is over a rigid fork.
My biggest gripe is with the original tires (and this may be due to inexperience in the dirt). Like Queen Amidala to Chancellor Velorum, the Nanoraptors get “a vote of no confidence” from me. On pavement and any hardpack that resembles pavement they work great. But on anything else they would drift, skid, slide, and generally leave me in a constant state of nervous tension over what they would do and where they would go next. I purchased some Panaracer Fire XC Pro’s at about the 600-mile mark and have been faster and more relaxed ever since.
Regarding components I have had no major problems and have no major gripes, just a few things of note. First, My bottom bracket went bad within a couple weeks of purchase, but my LBS warrantied it without question. The price difference between Shimano’s UN-52 (which was stock) and the UN-72 (which I had heard and read many good things about) was less than ten bucks, so I opted for the upgrade. (However, I am not thoroughly convinced that I would have ever noticed a difference had I simply stuck with the 52.) Second, V-brakes (Avid 20’s) compared to the cantilevers on my Trek; no contest. The V-brakes have more stopping power with less finger force required and are easier to adjust to top it off. Third, the Mega-9 rear cassette is annoying. I feel like there are more gears than I really need. Finally, my Paragon came with Shimano LX integrated brake levers and shifter pods. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but after further thought I expect changes/repairs/replacements/upgrades to be problematic unless I stick with the integrated arrangement. If I opt not to stay with integrated setup, I see having to buy a new brake lever and new shifter if the original is damaged or in need of replacement. (It may be that there is something I don't know.)
After setting budget constraints and then spending six months researching and test riding bikes, obtaining opinions, and reading reviews, this is the bike I ended up with. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase (actually, I am downright ecstatic about it) and would highly recommend this bike.
One final note: I wanted to send special shout-outs to all those who me helped through my research and purchase: Ken Snider, Anthony French, Patrick Wescott, and Dan Brugger @ Ken’s Bicycle Warehouse in Boise; Matt Snyder, Riley, Steve, and Curt @ George’s Cycles and Fitness on State St. in Boise; the guys @ Hawley’s Bicycle World on Raeford Rd. in Fayetteville, NC; the crew @ The Bicycle Shop on Bragg Blvd. in Fayetteville, NC; Paul Fleming and his buddy Adam, and finally thanks to Rich Loomis and Alan Dunlap. Strengths:Here is a quick update to my last review. The forks are amazing...confidence inspiring and smooth as butta. Brakes arn't as bad as I suspected as long as the rims and pads are cleaned regularly. First thing I really noticed about the Genisis Geo is how great it climbs... I'm actually using my big ring on some climbs! I've never done that before. Very light and easy to throw around when on tight single track.
Weaknesses:I made the mistake of switching from the LX stock bottom bracket to a syncros B.B. The thing was loose and started to creak after the first four hours of riding. I had it switched to a shimmy XT B.B. and haven't had a problem since. I love the switch to riser bars...it's a comfy position to be riding in. I found the seat a bit uncomfortable although this may be from lack of hours on the saddle for awhile. The tires are a luv/ hate relationship. I like how smooth it rolls on pavement but once I'm hammering up a root infested trail or descending wet singletrack, all confidence is lost and I end up clicking out of my pedals... I actually almost fell off the edge of a trail that dropped down 30 feet when I lost traction and braked hard; I ended up with wheels locked and actually gaining speed heading straight over the edge. I decided to hit a tree to slow me down instead of the alternative! I really miss my Smoke Tractor Treds. The Bontrager pedals are not bad but in order to keep them working at it's best, you have to keep them clean and sprayed with some lube.
Bike Setup:Stock with riser bars, XT bottom bracket....Gotta switch these tires for the type of riding I do.
Bottom Line:Still an amazing deal... lots of bike for the coin. I love what Genisis does for a rider's confidence. I still have to fine tune this bike so I'll be on the saddle as much as I can to give it a good review. But at this point it still earns top marks from me.

Bottom Line:I'm actually in the US studying at the moment and got this bike for considerably less than what I would have paid in Engkand for it.

The geometry and frame of this bike absolutely rock! It has given me soooo much more confidence on the downhills (especially steep narrow stuff, and tight stuff between trees). I agree with some other reviews that it requires a change in riding style. I only notice the difference when riding on the road though (on fast, but tight corners) where you need to noticeably move weight forwards, but it hooks up real nice.

The Judy forks are a bit of a revelation too! Compared to the '97 Judy SL's that I have on the DEAN back in Englans, these Y2K forks perform amazingly. They just soak up the bumps so nicely. I weigh 140lbs, have them with stock springs and 80mm travel. They are so nice. They don't let any water or mud in, (I'm in Oregon at the moment...) and didn't need a bit of attention till the first 100 hour service that I gave them! Even then they didn't really need it!

There are some dissapointing aspects though. The wheels, the chainset and the pedals.

I had a pair of Bontrager race wheels last year, and I have the same problem with them on this set! The bearings are terrible. They are constantly coming loose, no matter how many times the LBS tigtens them, in addition to the times that I have too. Anyway, they are in the process of being replaced under warranty. The build of the wheels is very good though. They have stayed tight and true since day one.

The pedals are just cheapo taiwanise made things (made for bontrager). The bearings again let them down, and entry and exit could be a lot better (give me some TIME's any day).

Last moan is about the chainset. Chain suck galore! They are bad chainrings. They have got all the ramps and pins etc... to aid shifting but they don't seem to work to well. There is a mounting on the frame for an anti-chainsuck plate. WHY DON'T THEY FIT ONE AS STOCK??

Oh yeah, one last grumble: No disc mounts on the frame. This bike did last year, and the cheaper 'Fisher bikes do this year, so WHY NOT THE MORE EXPENSIVE BIKES?? Disc brakes are THE way forwards. Believe me.

Recommend this bike for anyone. Though I would like a Sugar. Unfortunatly, they weren't available when I wanted (needed) a new bike last October.

Overall though, for the price, it is a good bike. 4 chilis.

I'm not familar with the Genisis Geometry, but the majority of the comments I've heard have been positive for Tall, Medium, and short riders. Again it's a great package for the price with a few things I will end up upgrading as they start to fail. I will be picking up my ride this Friday and hope to give it another positive review once I put some miles on it. Thanks to the riders who contributed their review on this bike... it was helpful!

Bike Setup:Genesis Pro Frame, RS Judy Race, Bontrager RACE Wheelset, Panaracer Fire XC Pro's, LX/XT. Stock weight 24 pounds 6 ounces.
Bottom Line:General:
This bike is a great package for the price. It's fast, responsive, and predictable.

Details:
I was looking for a good XC racing hardtail and the Paragon was a great choice. My budget was around $1,100 dollars (USD), and I compared bikes in the similar price range. The Paragon is a fast bike, the wheels are incredible light and strong. More about that later. Cornering is tight and movement is predictable at any speed.

Geometry:
Genesis - I like it. Uphills are a breeze, downhills become more confident. However, you have to learn to compensate a little for each element. Although Genesis is nice, I would gather that some things are sacrificed. The bike rides slightly differently b/c of the geometry and additional weight distribution is needed depending on the element. Frame is nice and stiff. No flex and accelerates like a motor bike. When I'm on the bike, I feel pretty confident on the trail b/c of the geometry.

Fork:
Very plush, very light, and it soaks up the bumps. I weigh 200 pounds and it holds up well. If the bike hasn't been ridden in awhile, the very first few compressions my shock makes this squish sound. But after the legs have been oiled (from the compression strokes) the sound goes away and it's all smooth and quiet from then on. My last ride, I hit a bump pretty hard and each rebound stroke made this funny click sound. I assume this was from the oil changing direction inside.... I'm no expert on shocks, but this went away after a few minutes. Overall, the shock has performed just fine, with a occasionally quibble.

Wheels:
These babies are fast, accelerate fast, decelerate fast, and have low drag. Mixed reviews on these wheels questioning the longevity and trueness of them. I have had no problems at all. Wheels are true and are put together fairly well. These wheels have hit some pretty hard stuff and are perfect. Radial laced front, 3X/radial rear.

Drivetrain:
Bontrager crankset is just ok. No chainsuck experience, although I've had some load shifting problems here and there. I've fixed this up as best I could, but it's still a rare problem. This will be one of the things I'll upgrade (Shimano XT). The pedals are just ok too. Clicking sound on entry is reassuring, however sound is not audible 1/3 of the time. Everything else is Shimano parts - and they've held up just fine. Mega 9 is a pain in the ass though. Very hard to adjust to your liking. Too bad it's hear to stay.

Cosmetics:
White and orange. Who could have picked better colors? Orange rims look good w/ my red Panaracer Fire XC Pro's. Damn good looking bike. Chick magnet. Add rider = chick electromagnet.

Notes:
If I could make some changes to the bike, I would have ditched the pedals, crankset, and bottom bracket. Don't get me wrong, these parts are great, but I would have preferred Shimano 747's, a XT crankset, and UN-72.

Bike comparison:
I've been there. First time bike buyer and so many choices! So hopefully this will quell some of your questions.
-GT Avalanche: I didn't like the geometry and weight.
-The Trek 8000 and 8500, the noticeable difference are the wheels. The 8500 is much faster than the 8000. However ROFL wheels are horrible. I got into an argument with the LBS's tech about them. Basically, these wheels are heavier. They may have less spokes, but they make the weight up in the rims. Two, hard two true places between spokes. Three, hard to find replacement parts. Four, expensive to comparable products. Geometry is great though. Handling is good.
-Specialized Stumpy: great bike, good parts, nice ride. I choose the Paragon b/c it was a little bit better.
-Klein Attitude Comp: awesome bike, killer ride, but expensive. The money goes in the frame, but I wanted a compromise of both. If I had no budget, I would have dropped the clams for the Klein.

Bottom Line:
The Paragon is a great bike. Solid performance, good parts, good weight, and good price. The geometry handles great, and inspires confidence. The parts are reliable and in combination w/ the frame, you'll be a confident and fast rider.

Bottom Line:In my opinion this is the best bike you can buy for the money. I did a lot a research comparing just about every hard tail in this price range and felt that the Paragon was the best deal. Not only in parts and frame but, that the Genisis Geometry is great for tall riders. At 6'6" I think I qualify. After riding the bike for about three months I have no doubts I made the right decision. This bike is much better than the old Giant I used to ride which is expected given the price difference but even I was suprised at several differences. Decending- much easier, Climbing- a lot less effort and speed this bike can really move. As a bonus you get the great looking orange Bontrager Race wheels, Nanoraptor tires which are very fast and, the neat look of all black Bontrager components. I think the bike looks great, my wife however thinks its ugly. I would definity recomend this bike to anyone looking for a good fast XC/Racing bike.

My LBS asked that I test the Fisher Paragon. Well, the story
ended there! I walked out with the Paragon! Did you know this bike won 2 world championships in the last 3 years? I'm
telling you, if you're in the market for a new bike, don't

Bottom Line:I'm a roadie who just started mtb'ing a few months ago. I borrowed a friend's custom Kona, which was a great bike, but she wanted it back! Originally, I was going to buy a Rockhopper, but I was lukewarm about it after a test ride. For comparison, I hopped on the 99 Paragon, and it felt perfect; love at first ride. My LBS ordered me a 2000 Paragon, and I just got it a few days ago. My boyfriend, who is far more savvy than I am about this sport, swapped out the stock Nanoraptors first thing. They were pretty slick, and I'm pretty much a newbie living in the land of the loose pack, so he thought I'd end up killing myself. A more advanced rider would probably do fine with them. How was the ride? The Genesis Geometry is incredible. I'm a smallish rider at only 5'2' and under 125 pounds, but it makes me feel as if I'm part of the bike, and not just sitting on top of it. I had some trouble on some steepish technical climbs, but it's hard to say that's the bike. I think I just need to improve my technical skills, drop a little off-season weight, and learn what my bike wants on the climbs. The weight distribution is different on the Paragon than on the Kona I'd been riding, which was actually too big for me, further confusing things. Basically, I need to relearn mountain climbing technique on a bike that fits. Downhill? Phenomenal. Once I fine-tuned the fork (A Judy Race) the ride was incredible. I was crazy brave on the downhills, and had no problem keeping up with more experienced riders. It's very confident in even tight singletrack. The orange and white paint-job took me a few minutes to adjust to-- sort of like walking out into the bright sun after being inside all day-- but I like it now. It's really a nice bike, and I got a lot of favorable comments about it from people who know more than I do. I'm giving it five flamers because I feel more for this bike than I do my road bike, and that's been my main gig. It's like the difference between loving someone and being in love. I'm head over heels for my Paragon. The Road will still be my main scene, but I know it's going to be tougher to want to be racing my road bike knowing I could be spending my weekends on my Paragon.
