$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Clarke Cycles | | Strengths: | Value. Thi bike is a great intro mountain bike at a very reasonable price. Upgradability. It is worth hanging better parts on the frame as you wear things out or break them | | Weaknesses: | Weight. At this price, you can't expect a light frame tho' If you get serious about mountain biking you will wear out these components. The seat. I bent the rails on a hard landing. replace it right away.
| | Similar Products Used: | Trek, Specialized | | Bike Setup: | LX bottom bracket and cranks, XT rear der. LX front der. SPecialized clipless pedals, Specialized body geo. seat, Rockshox Judy C fork | | Bottom Line: | I've done many upgrades (at good prices, so it did.nt break the bank) and have probably maxed out the potential of this frame. I am very happy with this bike. A word to the wise: If you know you are going to love mountain biking, it's cheaper to buy a beeter bike to start with...spend about $800 and get a nice hardtail... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | Hargroves Cycles | | Strengths: | Amazing frame, very strong and light. doubble butted tubes and gussets on the down tube make it an intricate and hight quality fram. The componentry is not bad and works well. the rock shox jett fork is works well. | | Weaknesses: | Maybe slightly lower spec components for the price but not bad. mine came with altus and alivio stuff. | | Similar Products Used: | gt outpost trail, scott peak, specialised rock hopper | | Bike Setup: | mine came with: a mix of shimano alivio and altus drivetrain and rapid fire shifters. rockshox jett. | | Bottom Line: | i have used this bike for downhill in scotland and the lake district and it has not disapointed me at all. i also race it in local cross country events and it's pretty good for that too. it's a great all round bike which is comfortable to ride and can take almost everything that you can throw at it. i've upgraded mine to mostly XT stuff but i've still got the jett fork that is great for everything i do. the rims could be a bit weak as my mate buckled mine the other day but that's the first problem i've had since i bought the bike two years ago.
it's a lush fram for upgrading on or just a great bike for bombing around on. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Westshore Bikeshop, Victoria | | Strengths: | Value is definitely #1. This is a light, stiff frame that can take a beating (I know mine has had a few good knocks) and can handle well. It's a good all-round bike that can give you a taste of every type of riding. I don't know where a lot of the stiff seat complaints come from. The model I bought here in Canada came with a plush seat that must be different from the US torture board I keep reading about. | | Weaknesses: | Contrary to popular opinion, the 2000 model is not Genesis geometry (2001 is though). As you improve or get used to riding this bike, it quickly becomes apparent that the low to mid range components are too weak and need upgrading. RockShox Jett shocks that it comes with should be thrown away immediately. Rims are flimsy and the tires are too narrow. | | Similar Products Used: | Demo rides on similar hardtails. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for: custom paint job & decals, BomberZ3 shocks, shimano clipless or Sun-RingleZuZu pedals depending on the ride. Moving to avid disc on front, Mavic rims and wider tires as I speak. | | Bottom Line: | I bought this bike as an all-round introduction to mountain biking. It's very good for that and the upgrades are keeping me satisfied for now. It can handle almost all terrain and climbs well but it's obvious that you'd want a more specialized ride when you get more experince. For example: it gets thrown around like crazy on gnarly & bumpy downhill runs. If you ride a lot, you will reach the point where laying the cash out for all the components you want to add starts competing with the cost of a new machine. You can't argue with the price though. I will keep this one around and tune it as a road/light trail bike when I move to the full suspension ride ;> | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Super pick up for the size, good light weight for easy handling. Brakes almost sent me over my head though, they are too weak and flimsy, love the 200 year geometry, really feels perfect. Great Yellow colour, super looks, good mid-range components, I will upgrade over the year in forks, brakes and tires. I pick it up tomorrow and take it home. $400.00 | | Purchased At: | bikeline | | Strengths: | tight aluminum frame; very light; nice mid-rannge component setup for the price; very stiff; fisher genesis technology, gives nice geometry; oversized tubing, yet not too bulky | | Weaknesses: | could use a better fork, and a 9 cogger in the rear, but then it's priced out | | Similar Products Used: | Performance m20; Trek 4900; Giant Rincon SE; Schwinn Moab 2 | | Bike Setup: | http://www.fisherbikes.com/marlin_specs.html | | Bottom Line: | Nice ride you can beat the hell out of. Great bike for anyone interested in getting into MTB'ing, without breaking the bank in the process. It road nicer than any of the others I've tried in the hard-tail range, listed above. The aluminum stiffness takes some getting used to, but the benefits outweigh any discomfort. Very light and strong. The genesis technology is no gimmick, it really does feel alot better. Sprints and climbs like nobody's business...there's no wasted motion, all energy directed straight to the driving wheel.
Although the Rock Shox are the low Jett model, they work well, with limited or no bobbing, and are adjustable. I highly recommend this ride to any beginner who is interested. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It only took one hard core ride for the Fisher to speak on its AWESOME reputation. I am 6 feet two about 220 pounds, and I beat the crap out of this thing. The Genesis Geometry really works once you learn how to use it to your advantage, in the matter of three weeks after purchasing the bike I was climbing up some awesome rock slopes without loosing any traction at all. Whatever it is, my wrists tire quickly due to angle of me as a rider - It forces me to fall forward, causing strain to the hand..(IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS, PLEASE EMAIL ME~) | | Similar Products Used: | Trek | | Bike Setup: | Rockshok Jett Fork, Aluminum frame, Shimano RM-40 rear hub, Shimano Derailer, ALtus Front Derailer | | Bottom Line: | Being a novice to offroad, I was introduced today to a grueling "through the woods over the hills, narrow paths and tight spaces between overshadowing trees" challenge.. I'm happy to report the Marlin performed admirably. Kicked in to cut through thick walls of sand, downshifted and realigned itself very well, took tight turns, bothersome branches, rambuncous roots, leacherous logs, and..well you get the idea. I am pleased with the performance and handling of this bike and would recommend to anyone looking for a well-priced, well-balanced machine. $450.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | The seat is great, and the handel bars are, and Brake levers work awsome | | Weaknesses: | The Rear wheel, the Deraileur, and the those plastic beeds protecting the cables, the s*&^5x, they always vibrate to the back of the cable, and then can effect the shifting, also the brake pads su*x, they only lasted for 2 weeks the tires, are no good, they lost their grip with in 2 days | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Stock, Jett fork, Specalized tires, they work good and I have had them for 5 months now | | Bottom Line: | I have had this bike for 5-6 months and I have dished out as much as I can with 5-7 foot drop offs, and speeds up to 45-50 on the downhill and the rims have not held up, Also I brought the bike into the shop to get it fixed 3 times, because of the wheels, and the Derailleur, You shouldn't get this bike if you r going to be wild, It is a ok bike for the price. I would deffintally reccmond this to a beginner, but I am going to upgrade my rear wheel to an Mavic 221, with deore 8/9 speed hub. But GF makes great bikes and i will always keep my bussnies with the, I am looking forward to buying the Sugar 1 or new sugar 2 | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I have abused it a lot over the past 6 months. I have gotten about 5 feet of air off of a 4 foot tall ramp. I have reached over 50 mph on a downhill. I quickly found the limits of the front fork. I don't like the brakes either. The dealer says that there is no way to put disc brakes on. I think it is a great bike for the price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

lots of people have been complaining about how hard the seat is, but mine is soft i think (prob because my old wal-mart bike seat was hard as steel plating). sure it hurt at first, but i guess ive finally broken it in | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$399.00 | | Purchased At: | Bicycle Sport, Louisville, Kentucky | | Strengths: | Frame, weight, price, looks, geometry | | Weaknesses: | Seat (hard), Suspension Fork (Crude), Derailleurs (functional but not slick) | | Similar Products Used: | Trek, Giant offerings in the $400.00 price range | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | This is a great bike for the price. I worked at a bike shop approximately 15 years ago. Back then, a TIG welded aluminum frame bike would have cost $900.00 minimum. I am 6'1" tall, so I got the XL frame. I love the frame because of the extra long front triangle. It is much more comfortable for me. The only problem is that you have to be really careful climbing steep hills, or you might flip over backward. Just lean forward and you'll be fine. The tires work OK except when climbing steep hills. More grip is needed on loose soil, but I wouldn't want any more aggressive tire for the street which is where this bike spends most of its time. I love the shifters-much better than grip shift in this price range in my opinion. All in all, I can't imaging a better bike for the recreational rider. Although, this bike may pique your interest and make you want an all out racing bike! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The front and rear derailleurs are pretty good, although I hope to upgrade eventually. It's just a great bike for a beginner like me. For more experienced bikers, you might want to try a step up in the Gary Fishers, maybe the aquila or tassajara. | | Weaknesses: | I also changed the seat and will either get my derailleurs readjusted or just get new ones b/c they're pretty noisy when the front is in 2nd. | | Bike Setup: | new seat | | Bottom Line: | Great bike, no real complaints. $400.00 | | Purchased At: | Diamond Bar Cyclery | | Strengths: | Pretty much everything on the bike. Its a great bike for the price. Definitely a bike worth upgrading.(but no real need to) Bike will support beginners to intermediate/advanced riders. | | Weaknesses: | The entry level drivetrain. Need relatively frequent tune ups. (ie trueing, DR adjustments) | | Similar Products Used: | Gt Agressor, Giant Yukon (other bikes at around $400) | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | Great bike. The entry level drivetrain is great. It is just a little more touchy. Learn how to make Deraillier and brake adjustments and your in top shape. Keep the drivetrain clean and it will last you long enough... No real need to upgrade.(Just upgrade when parts wear out) Even XTR on pro bikes wear out. The shocks are nice. Don't forget YOU are 95% of the performance of the bike, and 5% is reliant on the equiptment. Marlin will support 4%. DON'T GET CAUGHT UP WITH BIG FANCY EQUIPMENT NAMES, THEY ARE GREAT, BUT IS NOT WORTH THE PRICE UNLESS YOU ARE SPONSORED. Don't get intiminated by other peoples bikes this bike is definitely competitive. Gary Fisher makes great bikes. Its pro bikes are of genesis geometry. The marlin is not. then again genesis geometry does not seem to fit many people. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Frame is sturdy and light, the shocks are adjustable, and it the bike shifts smoothly. | | Weaknesses: | SEAT!! I rode this bike for two days, and was sore for the next three. Purchase a new seat immediatly. The front gear makes a little noise when in the middle position, but I am going to take it by the shop and have them repair it. | | Similar Products Used: | GT Outpost, Schwinn Moab, Trek 4300 (nice bike, but GF is better), Trek 6000 (too expensive). | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for new seat (highly recommended!) | | Bottom Line: | Excellent bike for the money. I did not see another bike with such quality components for around the same price. The bike is perfect for me (a novice daily rider), but may need to be upgraded for more experienced off-roaders. The frame seems strong and should be able to take upgrades with ease. Gary Fisher has my business for life. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

You'd be hard pressed to find a better bike in this price range. Though the components aren't the best they are usable and IMHO the frame is worth some upgrades. The wheels did need to get trued after a little while but I did ride the snot out of the things so I can't complain too much. The front derailleur needs to be coaxed a little to move from the smallest to the middle chain ring but it isn't a major problem. Despite the wheels and the front derailleur I couldn't be happier with this bike, it looks and rides better than a $350-400 bike probably should :) 4 flamin' chili's (There may be a better bike in this range but I havent' ridden it). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
