Strengths:Very light, very strong frame. Deore LX shifters work very well. Love the WTB Raptor tires. This bike HAULS BUTT going uphill and downhill. I can reach over 20mph climbing uphill and well over 40mph downhill. I've C-country raced against Treks and high end K2s and still smoke them.
Weaknesses:WTB Raptor tires wear quickly, in about 600 miles.

Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Bungays
Strengths:I would say the frame and the wheels are the selling factors for the bike. Everything else isn't very good.
Weaknesses:The bike is quite heavy, but reasonable for the price (around 26.5 lbs)The parts don't last long. Ruined cassette and crank after 3 months.
Bike Setup:Bear frame for now, planning to custom build it.
Bottom Line:This is my spare bike as I recently bought a 2002 Specialized Stumjumper HT. After racing with it, I found out I enjoy the Gary Fisher way better. This is due to the frame geometry, it's great.I think that Gary Fisher bikes are of way better quality tha Specialized if you ask me. I will defenatly be racing with the Fisher next year with all the new parts!

Strengths:Great feel, good design, strong frame.
Weaknesses:Shock, seat, tires, stem
Similar Products Used:Specialized, Bridgestone, Miata, Trek, Giant
Bike Setup:Marzocchi shock, gel seat, lx drivetrain, panaracer fire pro tires, azonic riser, kore stem, stock shifters/brakes
Bottom Line:This bike has kicked booty! I bought it because I destroyed a Trek and they wouldn't honor my warranty. I didn't have cash to buy a more expensive Fisher so I got the Kaitai and I'm glad I didn't spend more. I love the feel, the color and the handling. I'm just now replacing the Alivio crank. I blew the shock out about a year ago. Replaced the handlebar/stem/tires. Stock shifters and brakes (new pads) still work great. Front/rear deraileur both replaced. I'll still stick with this frame and just replace the parts as they get demolished. Three years of great XC riding and still going strong.

Favorite Trail:Lynn Woods
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:International Bike in Brighton, MA
Strengths:- Nice entry-level to intermediate bike
- Component spec is not bad for the price
- Light and stiff
- Tough, tough, tough!
Weaknesses:- Bontrager cracks and chain rings just didn't hold up
- A little heavy compared to XC bikes coming out this year
Similar Products Used:Trek and GT hardtails
Bike Setup:I have had this bike setup for everything from light XC to beefy freeride.
Bottom Line:Someone said to me once, "A Gary Fisher freeride hardtail? I've never seen one of those before!" That pretty much says it all. My bike has been abused, there is no other word for it. I bought this bike when I first started mountain biking three years ago. It allowed for a quick learning curve and I was able to transition to an intermediate rider without a problem. Then came the drops. I was addicted. 2', 3', 5', this humble hardtail handled everything and didn't blink once. In its element on the tight singletrack and solid on the drops, its only enemy was rocky downhills (I have the scars to prove it). But hey, you can't make an $800 hardtail behave like a downhill bike.

Over the years I broke everything on this bike, breaks, drivetrain, wheelset, etc. But I was really surprised and delighted that it survived as well as it did. Genesis geometry be damned, this is just a solid bike for anyone who wants to learn to love mountain biking.

Favorite Trail:Castlewood River Trail
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $850.00
Purchased At:Sun & Ski Sports
Strengths:Strong bike, good components, strong wheelsets, rides smooth, good fork, great price.
Weaknesses:Some components could've been better, the tires are useless in muddy or rocky conditions, the pedals were useless unless used with the pedal cage, and unfortunately they don't make this bike any more.
Similar Products Used:94 Diamondback Outlook, 90 Diamondback Apex
Bike Setup:I alternate pedals with Time Atac MTB and Shimano MX-30 platforms; WTB Velociraptor in rear; Answer Pro Taper 1" riser bar.
Bottom Line:This bike is great. The first thing you need to do is replace the semi-slick tires, switch out the pedals with some beefy platform or clipless pedals (unless you prefer the pedal cages). After that, you should be good to go. Like I said, some of the components were a little weak, but I wouldn't replace any of them until you need to. If you are a beginner, this bike is a more than perfect starter. If you have been riding for a while, this bike is awesome. If you are a heavy rider, 230+, this bike is still awesome. If you are wanting to get into racing, this bike is right for you. If you can still find one and need a new bike, go buy it now. If you can't find it, go for the Hoo Koo E Koo.

Strengths:Frame, bontrager superstock wheelset, judy xc shocks are great.
Weaknesses:Pedals are weak, seat is uncomfortable, brakes and levers aren't the greatest, and Deore front derailleur provides weak shirting.
Similar Products Used:Specialized, Kona, Trek
Bike Setup:ALl stock except terry liberator, sure foot 4 pedals, velociraptors, and avid arch rivals whith speed dial 7 levers.
Bottom Line:For the money the best bike around, genis geometry is great.
has shown no serious weaknesses even when ridden hard at Mt. Snow. I race on this bike and its great, very efficient. A great bike to buy, but too bad they stopped making them in 2000, maybe some stores still have them lying around or even a used one is good.

Strengths:Genesis geometry is SOOO nice. I love this bike. Judy XC fork is smooth, gives me no trouble, and I haven't been able to hurt the rims at all, even with my aggressive riding habits.
Weaknesses:Crankset sucks. Bent it one week after I got the bike, so now it's XT. Seat hurts bad. Got a Terry Liberator. Flat bar was too low for me, and the pedals are a joke.
Similar Products Used:Diamondback Sorrento, Raleigh M-80, Kona, Trek
Bike Setup:Time ATAC Alium clipless, Easton MonkeyLite Riser bar, XT cranks, Terry Liberator seat, soon to be Avid brakes.
Bottom Line:Overall, this bike rocks. I bought it because it was (relatively) cheap, and I liked the Genesis geometry. I didn't have the cash to buy a better equipped bike, but I wanted to start riding soon, and figured I could always upgrade later. That plan has worked out really well, and I love this bike. They quit the name this year, and the Marlin is the same bike now.

Favorite Trail:black mountains, brittany
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Buchika sports, Salem, NH
Strengths:Frame with Genesys geometry, travel-adjustable fork, relatively light, coherent component package
Weaknesses:Saddle (WTB SST-Brick-X), basic brake system non-existent in the mud, 31.6mm seat tube diameter limits seatposts choice.
Similar Products Used:Wheeler 5800
Bike Setup:Time ATAC clipless pedals, Profile riser, Selle Italia Flite saddle.
Bottom Line:Very nice package, unfortunately discontinued in 2001 but close to the HKEK line.
This bike made me a better rider, I needed that geometry but didn't know it. I'm 5'10" and ride a Medium (17') with a 24" top tube and a short stem (90mm). Low standover, good position and lots of room to move around the bike.
Same thing for the riser, I never had one before and when I put this one on, I really was amazed. Climbs just as well as before and much more comfortable on the wrists.
The Judy XC set up to 100mm of travel is (very) heavy but takes a beating with a smile, very plush too. The easy way to shave off a pound on this bike is to change the fork but I love the way it works and at 27 pounds the bike is not too heavy anyway.
Next upgrade: The brakes and rear tire (front raptor is good, rear is for hardpack).
It is not an FS/XC so a bit of discomfort can be expected but the WTB saddle is not one of their best, swap it.

Strengths:Frame, definately the frame... great climber, handles great.
Weaknesses:Crank needs upgrading but it's not super crucial... probably gonna get some clipless first.
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:This is a fantastic bike if you can still grab one! It's a discontinued line which makes the price fantastic. It's a serious climber, well built and has a seriously wicked frame (gary... genesis geometry... stupid marketing name but amazing design!). If you're looking to get a real mountain bike (my last one was a raleigh), need a fantastic deal and some serious metal, grab this bike. If you are simply aching to spend a fortune for the same great quality then you had best go elsewhere.

Strengths:-Great Frame, Genesis Geometry Rocks!!
-Well spec'd out for the price.
-Judy XC Fork, muy bien.
-weight (for the price, its pretty good)
Weaknesses:-brakes blow
-crankset could be better
-Bontarager Superstock wheelset is week
-WTB seat is horrible, a brick would be a better deal
Similar Products Used:-trek 6000 (upgraded)
-Fisher Tassajara
Bike Setup:-Mavic 517 rims on XT hubs
-New saddle
Bottom Line:This was my first real mountain bike and I loved it. There were some weaknesses but I really enjoyed riding her. This is a great bike for someone just getting a taste of the sport and that wants a bike that will perform well. If you are a hardcore trail rider then it may be worth your while to step up to a better spec'd out bike. I just sold my Kaitai and am now prodealing a 2001 Mt. Tam (kick ass!!). I would have stayed with the KaiTai if I didn't get such a great deal on the Mt. Tam ($800 dollars brand-new). Since I am beginning to get into racing and I felt it was time to upgrade the ol' KaiTai. But anyway, I really enjoyed riding the bike and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the sport. It performs well, is cheap, and has good components for the money. Good luck on your bike hunt!!

Strengths:6061 frame, judy xc shock, genesis geometry
Weaknesses:pedals,brakes
Bike Setup:Upgrades include: time atac alium pedals, bontrager fs2000 leather/titanium saddle, panaracer fire xc tires
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the money. I have rode this bike in terrible conditions and it has performed great. The frame is solid and the geometry makes for great climbing and descents. The main strength of this bike is the way it climbs compared to other bikes I have ridden. Clipless pedals are a must first upgrade. Also, the WTB tires that came with the bike are great for racing, but aren't great for muddy or wet leaf covered trails. My next upgrade will include new brakes. The OEM brakes provided do the job, but lack any kind of power. The Kaitai has been discontinued for the 2001 year, but the 2001 Gary Fisher HKEK is comparable.

Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:Knapps Cyclery
Strengths:Sturdy frame, Light and strong wheelset, overall drivetrain has functioned flawlessly. The frame is not butted.
Weaknesses:Brakes could do with some improvement. The frame is not butted.
Similar Products Used:Test rode similar GT's, Giant's, Cannondales, Trek's, and Specialized
Bike Setup:Stock except: Saddle: Koobi SI. Brake Levers: Avid SD Ti. Shifters: new xt shifters coming soon.
Bottom Line:The bike is a decent ride. I needed a bike with a low and long top tube to fit my short legged long torso body. This was the least expensive bike to meet that requirement. The Judy XC fork was a little stiff untill I put Slick Honey on it. The oil and springs were replaced to better suit my above average size (240lbs). The wheels (Bontrager Superstock) have really impressed me because of the amount of abuse they have taken and not needed to be trued. I don't hop logs very well yet and the back tire (half radial laced) has yet to fail me. The racing raptor tires are not that great for the wet conditions around here. (Being replaced) The frame is not butted, this is a positive and a negative for me, the lack of butting means I won't be denting the frame as easily, however it is weight that I can never get rid of. (I have plenty to lose myself) Overall I am quite please with my Kaitai, I just hope I don't have any type of warrenty issues that I have heard others complaining about.

I would also like to point out the exceptional work that Knapps Cyclery has done. I credit them for the strength of the wheels (they tensioned and stress releived them for me). They also worked very hard getting the bike to fit without compromise.

Strengths:*Genesis geometry*! Nice thick tube construction that's strong, yet really light. Judy XC's if you like em' the adjustable travel is nice (and disc brake tabs). Very upgradeable bike if need be.
Weaknesses:Seat sucks, it's trying to keep me from procreating, a ball of duck tape on the post would serve ya better. Brakes sorta blow too, upgrade em' if you got the cash. Handle bar wsa a tad bit too narrow for my wide shoulders, but if your smaller...? Some components could use an upgrade if yer picky.
Similar Products Used:Fisher Wahoo and Marlin, I liked the HooKooEKoo...
Bike Setup:XT derailleurs, Titec Hellbent- Big Al stem- and bar ends, Cane Creek headset, Jones tires, heavy duty springs, Salsa boosters/grips, Body Geometry seat blah blah blah
Bottom Line:Great bike for the cash, I basically bought mine for the frame and donated my components to my girlfiends cause (GF Wahoo). I went from a XL frame in my Marlin to a large frame in my KaiTai to beat on better, being a larger guy (6-3', 245 lbs) I went with the heavy duty springs in the Judys and swapped out my oil with 15 weight goo. Also to compensate for my broader shoulders I went with the Titec Hellbent DH bar for that couple extra inches. All in all a great bike and it's too bad that this was the last year this mule was built. GARY FISHER WILL ALWAYS BE THE KING! Go out and eat some Treks! 5 flamin' poppers!

Bottom Line:This is a durable, good performing HT that you can have a long time. There are components to upgrade as they fail or piss you off, but the frame is quite worth it. Great single track bike, and overall a real nice performer. I have ridden through stuff that I never thought a hardtail could do and this thing just ripped through it. It has made me a much better rider, and taken me where I have never been. I trust it. This model is no longer offered, but there are several models with the same frame and similar equipment offered. Strengths:Fairly inexpensive, fairly light (28 lbs.)
Weaknesses:Rock Shox Judy XC is useless, trade it in the second you purchase this bike.
Also this bike comes with LX rear deurailer and a Deore front both of these should upgraded because of their weight.
The last major problem that I found with this bike is that it doesn't come with clipless pedals. In my opinion, clipless pedals complete any mountain bike.

Bike Setup:GF 2000 Kaitai; Time Atac pedals; Bontrager alum seatpost; Panaracer SS (rear) and SK (front) tires.
Bottom Line:This is a follow up review after six moths and some 2,500 miles of riding.

The drivetrain components and brakes, though basic grade, work fine for me. When they wear out I will upgrade. Performance wise, I have been very satisfied with the set up.

The bottom line for me is this:

This was my first MTB bike - when I was shopping I wanted a good basic MTB that was upgradeable. Since I did not know whether I'd like MTB or not I did not want to spend the extra $'s for more expensive components.

The frame is excellent!

I am very happy with my puchase- I ride an average distance of 21 to 25 miles per ride. This bike makes the grade.

If you are getting into MTB /XC riding but don't want to spend $1,500 for your first bike take a look at the Kaitai.

However, make sure the "Genesis" geometry frame fits you. If it doesn't. TREK makes the same bike with a standard fram top tube that may fit you better.

Hope you like riding as much as I do !

Weaknesses:I am considering break up grades and possible rear derailer to xt. Riser bars would help to improve your posture and but more weight on the back seat for better climbing.

Bottom Line:This is really a great bike if it fits you right. The geometry and handling have me trying stunts I never would have tried before. The only downsides would be the rear deraillur and brake levers.I bent my front left brake lever my first day out when i had just a small jostle, and the rear deraillur needs adjusting after every bit of singletrack. Those will be my first upgrades. The price can't be beat, and considering how amazing the frame is, you could upgrade this bike to death and it would be worth every penny. I also intened on buying new tires. The stock WTB's are fine, but climb like sh*t in loose dirt/gravel (which is about the only kind of terrain I seem to get around here in the summer. I have no compalints about the saddle.

Stock seat very comfy - I ride 2-3 hours and up to thirty five miles about 4 times a week; Judy front fork is good;
Weaknesses:I don't care for the Bontrager hubs that come on the Superstock Wheelset -the rear is noisy.

None really- Sure some of the components could be improved but hey, for the price it works greats stock.
Bike Setup:Stock except Time ATAC pedals and Panaracer SS (rear) and SK (front)
Bottom Line:This is an excellent entry level MB/XC bike that will not be put to shame by much more expensive hardware.

Will upgrade to higher end parts as they need replacing.

If you are just getting into the sport but don't want to spend your wad on a bike- the Kaitai is the ticket. Frame is great and very upgradeable. By much less of a bike and you are stuck with having to start over with a whole new bike.

Bottom Line:I just bought this bike yesterday, and today, I had to bring the thing back to the place I bought it at, because hopping up a curb, I bent the damn rear wheel A-Frame.

I'm not exactly sure what I should think about all this.

I've been reading lots of reviews about how everybody thinks the bike is so cool and its frame is practically indestructible, but how the heck is it so great if I broke it the first day I rode it?! I wasn't even going fast (less than 10 mPh) so how can you defend this fault? I'm praying that the bike is under warrantee, but the only thing the guy at the store could tell me is: "We have to get it looked at by a Fisher Rep. to make sure it was a manufacturing defect and you didn't just jump off a house... If the damage isn't your fault, we'll send it out for a new frame and fix it up under warrantee, otherwise you pay for it outta your pocket." Hell NO! If this thing's broken and they try to get me to pay for it, I'd rather sell it as scarp metal and boycott Fisher forever more.

That thing cost me 725 big ones, if it breaks on a freaking curb, I shudder to think what would happen on a Mountain! I have to tell you, I had a Diamond Back Ascent EX for 5 years, and the only thing I had to replace on it was the brake handles, a chain, a new set of tires and tubes, and one crankshaft... in five years!!! I mean, if Fisher's bikes break this easy, we got a serious problem in bike manufacturing today.

Let me just say that Gary Fisher Bicycles has one heck of a black clound hanging over their heads right now. If I can't get it fixed under warrantee, that's the first and the LAST Fisher bike i will ever buy in my life.

It's one hall of an expensive mistake...

I have beat the hell out of this bike in three months and would recommend it to anyone.
Weaknesses:In the short time I have had it I bent the middle front gear in the sand at the beach. At first I was not sure how it happened, but recently I had the bike in for routine maintenance and had sun and ski sports look at the derailer. I did point this out to then the day I bought it, but they said everything was fine. Turns out the derailer was bent and has been bent for quite some time. It was not Gary Fisher's fault nor was this a failure of the part itself. It was Sun and Ski Sport's fault for selling me a bike in a hurry and not checking everything out like they should have.

Bottom Line:The bottom line is that I love the bike, but felt like I got the shaft from the place I bought it. I can say the any future work done by then will be done right or I will contact Gary Fisher's home office and let them know how they are working on their bikes.

Overall this seems to be a great bike to start at if you do not wish to do alot of upgrades. If you buy a cheaper bike you'll be out more on upgrades. Bike Setup:xtr v-brakes, shifters, levers, & rear derailleur; Time ATAC Carbon. xtr front derailleur soon.
Bottom Line:Good value for the money. My priority really was to get a hardtail with a good frame to build on (since this is my first bike). I like the frame's geometry for ascending/descending. I feel like my position is set-up efficiently for spinning.

The Judy XC is great, albeit, on the heavy side. It takes a lot of punishment. I've only biked a couple of months and sometimes my line on some single tracks were suspect--going over rocks was not a problem.

I wasn't really going to change my shifter/lever/brakes to xtrs but my friend gave me a great deal. He switched to hydraulic discs and gave me his xtrs for $150 after 2 mos. of use--what-a-deal! I got the rear derailleur (xtr reverse-action) for $65 at Supergo. Boy, does it really make a difference in performance. Shifting is a cinch. After a steep climb, I can instantly shift two or three gears up which prevents me from spinning wildly with no torque.

The first upgrade that you really should consider are the pedals. I was hesitant at first. But when I changed them to clipless, spinning is more efficient. Of course, I fell a few times (and some more), but it's worth it. Now, I really look forward to riding my Kaitai and hitting those technical single tracks and steep climbs. My bike feels a lot lighter and faster.

Bottom Line: a good bike to build on!

Strengths:All around, the best bike for the price. Plenty of sizes, nice components, etc. Great for racing at a low price.
Weaknesses:The brakes needed constant adjustment, the front shifitng has not been too consistent (chain jams and occasionally I have chainsuck...even with clean chain. must be the chainrings).

I'm not sure where the extra weight comes from but the bike is a pound or so heavier than other bikes in this price range.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6500
Bike Setup:A few upgrades:
Magura HS11 brakes (huge improvement)
Nashbar clipless pedals
Tires (I now have a few pairs that I use depending on conditions)

I also ordered a new saddle to save some weight and a new cassette because I have about 1600 miles on the current one.
Bottom Line:When I wrote my first review of this bike in March, I had 200-300 miles on the bike. Now I have about 1600-1800 miles on it (in 6 months) and I figured it was time for a follow-up. Here's a quick update on the parts:

Frame/fork: Still great. The frame is holding up nicely and like I said before, it has nice mud clearance. I actually put a Geax 2.25 inch tire on the rear and it still had a little clearance. Same with the fork, maybe about a quarter inch on both sides. That means you can put on some beefy tires and switch the fork to 100mm travel and go freeriding. The fork still works fairly smooth after all these miles, I lube it with Judy butter every 8-12 hours of riding. It tracks pretty well but I only weigh 120 pounds and the springs still seem pretty soft compared to other forks.

Drivetrain: It still shifts fairly well. I am on my third chain now (HG 72) and I'm getting a new cassette soon. The rear derailleur needs some adjustment after a muddy ride, but when things are drier it's fine. The front shifts well 80% of the time, but the rings simply aren't made well enough to prevent the chain from jamming and chainsuck from happening even when the front derailleur is adjusted right. The rear shifter had a problem with the downshift lever not retracting but the bike shop fixed it for free. Overall, the drivetrain is solid for the price range. With a XT rear derailleur and a new crank (maybe a Shimano LX) it would be very, very good. I'm not going to complain about the clips-and-straps pedals the bike came with because most of the bikes in this range don't come with clipless, and I carried over my Nashbar ones from my old bike anyway. No big deal.

Wheels/tires: The front racing raptor is slowly becoming my favorite front tire for almost all conditions. It wears very slow, has decent cornering grip, and tracks through roots and rocks well. The rear tire is also super fast on pavement and hardpack, and with a little technique you can ride technical stuff. Tires are more of a preference thing, so trade in the rear tire for something better for your area. The wheels have stayed super true and are turning very well. The front bearings came loose after about 1500 miles and the bike shop fixed it for free.

Brakes/other components: The brakes are absolute crap. They work decent on the trail if you keep them adjusted and the cables clean, but after a few miles and some muddy conditions, they won't be working well anymore (IMO, no one should use cable brakes, even mechanical discs). I replaced with Magura rim brakes and they have needed far less adjustment and they are always very smooth. The handlebar has been fine just like the stem (which I flipped, I like my handlebars low). The saddle and seatpost are both outrageously heavy, so they are a great place to save weight. My new saddle is coming in th mail now which will probably save 150 grams. The headset and bottom bracket are both still smooth.

Overall, this is a great bike. The frame is very race worthy, and most of the components hold up well with some adjusting. The fork is heavy but very smooth, and with a few upgrades you can definetly race on it. Basically, you can upgrade the frame forever because it has a disc mount and it is light. A great foundation to build a dream bike on. I will definetly buy another Gary Fisher, probably the Sugar 2 in a year or so. It comes in plenty of sizes so it's not too hard to get a great fit. Go buy one!

Along with what I posted before, the frame on this bike is STRONG. It doesn't break and I pound the crap out of it. Read the reviews of Bidwell Park Upper Canyon under the Calif. other areas section of this sites trail reviews. These are some tough, rocky bike slamming trails, and my Kaitai eats em up and begs for more.
Weaknesses:Rear tire- I'm torn about this, on the one hand this tire is great at gripping rocks and cornering. But forget about loose gravel inclines. Also, the little tread nobbies are starting to break off and wear down already.
Pedals- mine are smashed and contorted, but I really don't care. As long as they are straight and I can get my feet in them I'm happy. I'll upgrade to clipless someday, but I'm happy as is right now.
Other minor stuff that my LBS handles for free: Brakes need frequent tightening, front and rer der need regular tuning after hard riding. Saddle is still hard, but again, what saddle isn't.

Bottom Line:I used a new 2000 kaitai for two days, I wasn't impressed. I am the proud owner of a Specialized FSR enduro so I am obviously a fan of full sus. bikes. After riding this bike I was even more pleased with my dual sus. bike. For a hardtail though, the Kaitai isn't bad. I ride this bike for two full days of aggressive technical riding. The Bontrager wheels are excellent. Even a rider of less than a year such as myself could feel the difference between these and the crummy stock wheels on my FSR. The handlebar is awesome, it's wide, flat and feels very solid. The steering is great. Genesis geometry is not all it's hyped up to be. The top tube is long, much too long. It puts you, or at least me anyway, in a bent over position that for me was uncomfortable as hell but that could have also been true because I am used to my full sus. bike. I think it was a combonation of both the long top tube and the lack of a rear shock. My back was sore after riding this bike. Also, the bike is fragile. I fell climbing over a series of rocks, a place I have fallen many times on my FSR and never scratched it, anyway, I bent the big chain ring so badly it wouldn't shift gears. The height of the bottom bracket is too low, It kept getting hung up on fallen trees that I usually climb over on my FSR. The bike does climb pretty well up steep hills and descends like,well...a hartail, nothing compared to my bike. It shifts smoothly, better than my bike which has the same drivetrain.
Don't believe all the hype! A hardtail bike is umcomfortable. On a full suspension bike you can ride harder and longer. That is what it is all about, riding. To climb on my FSR, I have to really get over my handlebars. On the Kaitai, it was easier but descending was not as fun or as fast on my full sus bike. Fun is also what it's all about. I can't believe racers are still riding hardtails. I recommend this bike to someone who commutes to work or school on their bike and does some moderate trail riding a couple of times per week. If the trail isn't too bumpy or you don't mind the back pain or you want to be a little faster on the climbs then this is your bike. Keep in mind that after buying clipless pedals and a sus seat post (to take the edge off of the bumps)you will have spent close to a thousand dollars. Good bike for moderate trail riding. Also, Fisher is a great company in my opinion. Where some companies put garbage components on a bike they put nice Bontrager parts on it.

The suspension fork is really nice, although I agree with someone else whose had problems with squeaking noises.

Also, Gary Fisher, the man who invented the sport of mountain biking, is incredible -- had the chance to meet him at a Fisher Trails 2000 event, and was glad I was riding one of his bicycles...

Finally, the real reason I bought this bike over the Cannondale F500 was my LBS: Blue Wheel Bikes in Charlottesville, VA. Scott Paisley, who is the co-owner of the store, used to build frames for Gary Fisher, and is an incredible ambassador for the sport. His shop also has impeccable customer service, where they really put the time in to making sure you get the bike that is best suited for you - swapping out stems, whatever it takes. While most bike shops limit your test rides to 3 minutes in the parking lot, Scott encourages you to take it for 20 minutes or more. And whether your looking into a top-of-the-line team replica, or a campus commuter, the folks at Blue Wheel bikes are equally excited to spend time with you.

No matter what you buy, make sure you buy it from a quality shop where you know you will get a good fit, with good service down the road. With all bikes sharing the same components, manufacturer matters a lot less than the retailer.

This is a great bike for under $800. They do make a little squeak sometimes on the rebound, but that's tolerable.

After getting the bike dialed in, it feels really solid on all types of terrain. Stock tires are not the best in mud, but great on hardpacked trails.

Brakes seem OK to me so far.

Gears shift smooth ( I do shift often).

The rear tire ( WTB Racing Raptor46/50) is a hybrid and great for both the trail and kicks on the pavement.

Cannot believe so many people complaining about how hard the seat is. Sure my butt was sore the second day but by the third day me and that seat have developed quite a relationship. The seat is just fine - guy/gals don't sit while going over the "whoop di doos" it'll save your butt some pain.

My advice to other newbies like myself to the sport - do not cheat yourself by buying too cheap a first bike. The Kaitai is a good entry level to Intermediate level bike that has a great frame. Very upgradeable- humm, maybe new brakes, Shimano XT........

I read through reviews of bikes here on mtbreview and decided that a Gary Fisher would be my next bike. At about 6 1 1/2 with long arms, not all bikes feel good, especially on long rides. When I testdrove it I knew this was the one.
I have rode it on single track, paved roads dwnhill/uphill, dried up riverbeds etc. The kaitai takes ém all.
The genesis frame really feels good, it makes for a better ride, especially uphill. The increased traction on the rear wheel keeps the bike from fishtailing on slippery surfaces.
These things are the ones that really matter.
On asfaltuphills I even took over roadbike racers, (hehe, did that feel good.)
I expected the brakes to suck from the looks of it, but they do fine untill now. My initial thought was that the bontrager stem was a tad short , especially when adding bar-ends, perhaps bar ends that don't invert are a better option than replacing the stem.
The front derailleur is a little noisy and the chain rubs, needs more frequent adjusting.
I have not ridden the bike in extreme sludge, but on hardpack and wet trails the tires are great
I don't like the pedals with straps but that is very individual i guess.
The fork is very nice and a bit plush indeed
it makes all rides,on all terrains , better and you can push the bike hard without fear of eating dust and stones or worse
bottomline is the frame is incredible, you can always upgrade the parts you don't like

Date Reviewed: July 7, 2000
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Price, Genesis Geometry, components. This bike is strong on the inside.
Weaknesses:brakes, chain, lack of clipless stompers
Similar Products Used:GT Avalanche
Bike Setup:stock but added Avid AD-1.OL levers and brakes, Bontrager race light bar ends, better chain
Bottom Line:Just moved from Boulder, CO, to the Redneck Riviera here in Memphis. I sold my old GT and wanted a new bike that could handle all types of terrain. I drove a Fisher while in CO and knew that the Genesis setup was for real. This bike will handle local trails and those in eastern TN and NC (and those in CO when I return to Mother).

I'm 160 lbs. 5'9", brown hair, enjoy long walks along the River...so I went with a Medium frame. Cockpit size should be your primary concern when purchasing a bike. This one fits like a velvet glove.

I don't trust Shimano chains. Too many times I flew over the handlebars. Had to make the change.

Pedals blow but what can you expect for this price. I looked at the Big Sur but don't like the Bontrager clipless. I've had friends who couldn't bail out and would sometimes have to take off their shoe to step off the bike. So the Big Sur wasn't attractive because there aren't that many differences after you change out the brakes on the KaiTai.

Brakes...as I said...I upgraded to Avids. Be aware that Avids are so awesome they can be a hazard to beginners. They stop on a pinky-toe finger nail and can launch you into the next county. But I'm risky like that and went with the upgrade.

At the price I stole this bike ($819.00 after upgrades), you can't beat it. I bought it from a local bike shop, so I've got the service, warranty, etc. that comes with owning a new bike. The frame will last forever and the Fisher feel sold me long ago. Judy XC shock is the goods, shifts as smooth as your mama (fast and smooth), and climbs these vicious Memphis hills like...well...like I'm climbing Memphis hills. Point being that I see no problem in this bike swimming upstream and would have been a kick in the shorts if I had it in Boulder. It can handle the climbs. But being an ex-BMXer, it does feel like I'm jumping out of the starting gate when the nose wheelies on me. I'll tame this horse over the long haul. And because I might run out of trails in the near future, the tires are sweet and may turn me into a "Roadie." The tread worked in the sand and hardpack, and were smooth on the pavement (as if that really matters). Sweet purchase and I give this dream 5 flamin bass boats in all areas.

Overall value
Weaknesses:Brakes
Crankset/front shifting
Stock pedals
Heavy-ish
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M80
Bike Setup:Stock, w/ clipless pedals, LX brake levers and teflon cables, barends, Spec. body geometry saddle
Bottom Line:I shopped mtn. bikes extensively; I demoed the Spec. Rockhopper A1FS, Trek 6500 & 7000, and C'dale F400. I purchased the Kaitai primarily because the frame and fit "spoke to me." Strongly considered the C'Dale.

At 6'2"/200 I opted for the XL frame, but probably could have gone L too. I liked the stretched-out feel of the XL, tho. I would definitely describe this bike as 'confidence inspiring'--my previous ride was more of a recreational fit and found me too far over the front wheel (very nimble, but prone to more-than-occasional endos). Pay attention to the cockpit size when buying a bike...most other things can be adjusted, but you can't do much about this!

My chief complaints about the bike are:
* balky about shifting to small chainring
* stock levers/brakes seem flexy, but will stop you. A $25 lever upgrade is probably money well-spent.
* stock pedals/straps...the first thing to go.
* saddle - ok, but not a great fit for me, personally
* weight - fair in this price range, but still not bantam weight.

Things I like are:
* Judy shock - pretty coosh. Will set to 100mm on first rebuild. A bit heavy, but seems solid and low maint.
* frame - it fit me and my riding style. Your mileage may vary. Front floats a bit on steeps, so climbing technique is important.
* rear shifting - positive, smooth
* wheelset - appears sufficiently light, smooth rolling, etc. Racing Raptor tires work well on hard pack and better than expected in loose, but hey--there are no all-conditions tires.
* price - (paid $700)
* decals - you can never have enough decals, right? ;-) Well, they're everywhere on the Fisher

Overall, I think this is a solid bike for an advanced enthusiast who has to pay their own rent and doesn't mind making a couple of choice upgrades. Sure, there are lighter, better-spec'd bikes, but you gotta compare apples to apples. In this price range I think it's a best buy, and there's plenty of good here to build on. And now, the envelope please...

Bottom Line:First bike was a Marlin, too heavy for bike, kept bending rims and bottoming shock, got a good beating after every ride. Traded for Trek 6500, good bike, but not to comfortable as I found myself scooting back in the saddle to strecth out torso, not a real good descender either, very agile bike. Bought Kai Tai off a friend. WOW. big difference, first thing i noticed was this thing was much quicker than the Trek. It seems to climb better and definitely tumbles down the hills with more speed and confidence. the bike seems to want to go faster. Brakes gotta go as soon as they wear out....bike is not as manuverable as the Trek, but I'm still getting used to it so maybe that'll change. will stick with GF in the future.

this one can ride faster, stronger, easier and is lighter.
Well balanced for me, I'd like to see a UNIX color version, using the same paint scheme but use flourescent green instead of the red & yellow :). Pedals don't suck at all, but I will get new ones. Seat is cheap and a real bone, so I'll get a new one-which I did already-the Fizik Pave'-and I took it back. Looks like a life time endeavor for finding a saddle that is good for me. I paid 640 Camel miles for it so it wasn't toooo bad for an account penalty. I guess I have to like it. So I'll give it a ten and tell you how it went in 6 months :)

PS The tires are pretty nifty. I'll be getting some trail attack tires to complement these road racers. Glad I have 'em in my arsenal now, I prolly wouldn't have purchased the Racing Raptors outright, so this was a treat.Plus, it can still climb a hill sideways real good. This bike can attack a hill and usually come out on top. Can't wait to put some knobbys' on it.

Favorite Trail:All over Bidwell Park
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Judy Shocks, good components for the money. Of course the Genesis frame, but don't be sold by the hype. Try the bike and if it fits, get it. Otherwise don't. I think these bike are great for lager riders because the longer top tube allows you to take a good forward lean. Also the tires, your first glance at the rear tire may have you asking the dealer who wore all the tread off. Don't pre-judge. These tires grip like muthas on dirt and rocks. They are fast as hell on pavement too. I haven't tried them on mud yet, so maybe I'll change them in fall.
Weaknesses:Cranks and pedals. I'll be going clipless soon. No matter how hard you strap your feet in, they come out on bumpy rocky uphills and downhills. The seat is hard, but what seat isn't.
Similar Products Used:Demoed the Kona Lava Dome, Trek's, Schwinn Moab's, Marin's, and GT's. The cromoly Kona was tempting, but the Dealer here in Chico sucks, and the thing was as heavy as a tank. Plus, it was worth the extra 150.00 to get the better components and Fisher quality that comes with the Kaitai.
Bike Setup:Stock, added Bar ends. Tighten up those Judy's right away if your 200+ like me, they are really plush.
Bottom Line:Great bang for the buck. My first "real" mountain Bike. If your short on the money to buy the highest quality right off, go with the Kaitai. You'll get a fantastic frame that you can upgrade when you have the dough. Don't be fooled into buying a sled just because it has Bomber forks and all the bells and wistles, get a great frame 1st. It's hard to beat the Genesis Fisher's for quality, and impossible at the Kaitai's price. Light, nimble and strong, this bike is tops for the money. 5 flaming bike seats for this one. I'll re-rate after a few months, after the honeymoon is over.

Bottom Line:The Genesis Geometry is unbelievable. I am 6'1 with a tall upper body and every other bike I rode left me feeling scrunched up on top. The minute I stepped on this bike it fit me perfectly. It climbs with ease and screams down the other side. I find myself being able to navigate more difficult trails with this bike due to its stability.I would reccomend this bike to anyone. I have taken it out too many times to count and haven't had any problems except minor adjustments on the brakes. Overall great bike.

Favorite Trail:Anything with dirt
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:+ Overall, solid components.
+ Not much generic stuff compared to other bikes in this range, just the post, stem, and brakes.
+ Stretched position (fits almost any rider)
+ Great wheels and tires
+ Disc mounts
Weaknesses:- Brakes need to be adjusted often
- No clipless pedals

Similar Products Used:Trek 6500, other Treks, etc
Bike Setup:Mostly the way it came, with Nashbar clipless pedals and a Enduro 2 computer.
Bottom Line:Frame/fork:The frame is great, it isn't as harsh as some of the very low-end aluminum frames. The disc mounts are nice and the welds look good. The mud clearance is great for the fork and frame. The fork seems a little soft, and I'm just 110 pounds. It's plush, though. The fork also swooshes more than the big "N".

Drivetrain:I've had this bike on over 20 rides in a little over a month, and the drivetrain has been great. NO problems in mud. A tiny bit unsmooth, but it still shifted well and the shifters aren't called rapidfire for nothing! I did have some problems with the chain jamming in-between the rings, but the bike shop took care of this and it has been fine since. The cranks look very cool.

Brakes: Probably the biggest weakness of the bike. Everything else is good except for the brakes. The levers have a decent amount of slop in them, and the brake arms (especially the rear) have inconsistant adjustment. It only takes about 30 seconds to fix, so it's not that big of a deal. The brakes will probably be my first real upgrade, though.

Wheels/tires: The tires are awesome. They are definetly semi-slicks and I thought they wouldn't perform well except on the road and hardpack. WRONG! They got just as good traction in mud and loose stuff as the full-on knobbies on my old bike (Kenda's). Even though the tires (mostly on the rear) tend to pick up mud, there is always rubber showing and they are great. They are REALLY fast on hard surfaces, of course. The wheels are great too. On my old bike, even with some decent rims, I had to true my wheels fairly often. The wheels have stayed true and seem to be high quality. The front wheel however seems a little flexy and the hoops probably wouldn't be the best for a heavier rider. They are relatively light, though.

Other components:
The seatpost slides up and down in the seat tube smoothly, the stem and handlebars have been great, the headset is smooth and the seat is confortable, just a bit short (I have the original WTB SST on my old bike).

Handling: This bike, due to the long top tube and plush fork is great on downhills. At high speeds it is stable and it can navigate through slow-speed technical situations well. I had the stem flipped so it has negative rise, but the front end occasionally floats on steep climbs. Overall, the handling is fairly neutral.

Overall, this bike is great. I am about 5 foot 6 (with a long 32+ inseam) and the medium is a great fit. I considered the Cannondale F400, but decided to go with the Fisher because of the better wheels and lack of Coda components.

If this had clipless pedals and some name brand (Avid would've been nice) brakes, I would give it 5 stars. That would probably be too good for the price, though. 4 flames overall rating for this great bike.

Strengths:Amazing ride and feel. Turns with subtle movements. Fast and fun. Great shock, great wheel system. Significant upgrades from the '99 model (which I have ridden extensively) warrants the price increase. An amazing Genesis frame at an unbeatable price when you consider all that you get. Best bike in the $800 price range on the market.
Weaknesses:Feels a bit heavy (not a big problem, it's still pretty light). Pedals are weak, upgrade to clipless if you have shoes or want to get a little hardcore. Otherwise this bike is super solid.
Similar Products Used:GT's, Trek's, Specialized, Cannondale's in same price range. 99 Kaitai, 99 Big Sur.
Bike Setup:Factory. I'm upgrading to clipless next paycheck:)
Bottom Line:If you are in the market for an amazingly fun, fast, great climbing hardtail with the Fisher Feel (yes I think Fishers do have a distinct ride), then this is your bike. It's a great first bike if you don't mind spending about a grand with necessary accessories like shorts, helmet, and bike rack. If you allready have an OK bike and want what I think is the best value on the market right now, shell out $850 bones, you will be very glad you did.
