Favorite Trail:Alpha trail because it is close
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:From private seller
Strengths:Great Frame
Weaknesses:Pedals, Seat, Factory Tires Are Not Fun On Any Paved Area For More Then A Few Miles
Similar Products Used:Speicalized Rockhopper
Bike Setup:New Pedals, Gel Seat, New Tires
Bottom Line:I have beat and beat and beat this bike. I don't care what I do to it, I try to break it it just takes it. Had to straighten the rims a few times now they don't get perfect anymore. Previous owner did not take care of so I had to work on it for a bit but it has been great since that was done.

Favorite Trail:My custom 30 acre back yard
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Used from friend
Strengths:Excellent shape for hill climbing, Rims are okay, takes turns very well.
Weaknesses:Man, that front derailleur sucks! It sticks and makes noises, and I had to replace the seat and fork, to avoid dying of discomfort. And it could stand to be a little lighter, though all bikes really could, couldn't they?
Similar Products Used:TREK stuff, SCHWINN, CANNONADE
Bike Setup:All Stock, except for seat and front fork. (Repalced with a Manitou Answer adjustable shock that works really great for me.)
Bottom Line:Obviously, nothing like a good Cannonade, but c'mon, you're paying like 500 bucks, here! (And mine was FREE!) Rides tight, has been abused and un-maintained for a long time without consequences. I take pleasure in outdoing anything you can find at a department store or schwinn dealership. Some components are not the greatest on this bike, but like I said, it's proved itself a very worthy bike for the semi-serious street and offroad biker. Just a really nice all around bike, comparable to something in the $800 range. NOT FOR A SERIOUS OFF ROAD RACER!!!

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Neenah Bike and Fitness
Strengths:Great Bike for your value. The best $500 dollar bike out there. It's extremley durable and performs like an expensive bike. I love the frame with a long top tube for a more aggressive position. Came with a nice set of tires and decent components.
Weaknesses:The stock seat was terrible. The fork is a little on the cheap side, it doesn't have much travel.I replaced the pedals too.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000/4900/4500
Schwinn Mesa
Bottom Line:Overall it is the best bike I've ever owned for value and durablity. It is a very comfotable ride and is great for anyone who isn't too serious about biking but likes to hit the trails on the weekends. I wouldn't buy this bike if you do a lot of competitive racing unless you plan on putting more money into it.

Similar Products Used:Trek 6000 and a modified Gary Fisher Gitchee-Gumee
Bottom Line:Excellent all-round bike. I use it all the time and constantly out-race and out-do my friends Treks and Schwinns. It has great brakes and is easy to ride fast turns. Lightweight for big air. It is an excellent over-all weekend warrior bike.

Weaknesses:Get different pedals.

Purchased At:Teds Bike shop
Strengths:price,frame,most other components
Weaknesses:chain broke during first week, since then ive had troubles with drivetrain. replaced rear derailleur once. seat is hard, but functional. shocks are great for starters, but the longer you ride, the more you want to upgrade.
Similar Products Used:this was my first "real" mtb after riding a mongoose rigid.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock except for: lx deore rear derailleur, scott clipless pedals, bar ends.
Bottom Line:I got this bike to do what it was meant to do. its a great bike if you think you want to do some serious riding, but also need something to ride to class or around town. i do more trail riding now. after 3 years, i finally want to upgrade the shocks to something like marzocchi z2 atoms. would love a new seat.
the biggest problems ive had with this bike have to do with the drive train. i dont know what the hell im doing, but the drive keeps skipping under torque. replacing the rear derailleur and the dropout worked for a little while, but its back. ive had it in the shop several times, but i would like to work on it myself, so if you have any pointers, drop me an email.
five chilis all around cuz this bike gives me the urge to ride.

Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Geometry, ergonomics, value.
Weaknesses:At this price? None.
Bottom Line:I'm 5'5", and this is one of the few bikes I have truly felt comfortable on. With the small frame, the layout is just right for me...top tube length us spot-on. For the price, this bike's component level cannot be beaten, even if the Jett fork leaves much to be desired. The attention to detail that Fisher is known for really shines through on this bike.

Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:Local Bike Shop
Strengths:Solid frame geometry, great all-around bike, great componentry, Tires and rims are excellent
Weaknesses:Everyone complains about the seat but I dont use it a whole lot.
Similar Products Used:I had an old Schwinn Frontier and a Fisher BMX bike that I traded in to get the Tassajara
Bike Setup:Stock from factory
Bottom Line:I found this bike to be an xcellent trail cruiser and it also rides decent on the road, except for the knobby velociraptor tires. I ride many local trails in the metro and it can easily handle everything I can possibly throw at it. It rides smooth and responsive through Murphy-Hanrehan in Savage, a very fast rollercoaster-like ride. It climbs well, the tires have more grip than I can ever use. This bike is the perfect bike for a beginning to moderate rider.

Strengths:Great value, comfortable and pretty much bullet-proff reliability
Weaknesses:Original Velocaraptor tyres are rubbish where I ride. Anything remotely sharp within a mile radius and they hole. Changed to Panaracers and no problems

Seems vrey prone to chain suck and throwing the chain when shifting down to teh granny ring
Bike Setup:Stock except for Panaracer XC Pro rubber
Bottom Line:All round godd bike. I've ridden all year, in the dry, in ankle deep mud and aprt from teh puncture problem it's never let me down.

Weaknesses:Drive train & front fork needs upgrading. Bike also has

Bottom Line:All around, a super bike. I've been riding more and more, and enjoy the Tassajara. Great value. Very responsive bike. If you want an excuse for an upgrade, ride in the mud. I snapped the rear deraileur clean of my bike, warped my rear skewer, ruined my chain when I bent the inner ring on my crank. With stock tires, bike picks up to much mud. With the upgrade I love it.

Strengths:Tough frame, LX rear derailleur
Weaknesses:low end components, and jett front fork
Bike Setup:Stock except: crowbars, LX brake levers, saddle, kooka seat post, added Salsa brake booster in rear, Kona stem, Kona project 2 rigid fork, Mavic 221 rims, Agato trials specific tires, and customized front chain rings to use top ring as a bash ring.
Bottom Line:Bike is perfect for beginner. Low end components are the only down fall. I road this bike stock for a while, had no major problems. Had to true wheels several times. The brakes are probably the best of the low end components that you get. I bought this as a begginer rider, lately I've turned it in to a stock trials bike and I'm still using the same brakes. Will diffently have to up-grade brakes as I become a better trials rider. Bottom line; Perfect for biginners, frame is extremely strong.

Bottom Line:I have run this bike over 400 miles on tough Central Oregon trails and it hasn't let me down. The fork is in need of upgrade as well as the front derailleur and maybe a suspension seatpost. This is my second mountain bike and I would recommend it to any beginner rider. Favorite Trail:Brush Mountain
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $480.00
Purchased At:Bike Line in Delaware
Strengths:Frame. Paint looks great. Good deal for the price. Deraillers, shifters, brakes, and levers have held up well. Component spec seems pretty good for the price.
Weaknesses:Cranks, chain, fork, rims.
Similar Products Used:Demo'ed a lower end Fisher.
Bike Setup:Stock with these changes: Recently replaced crank with a Sugino 700x that I got cheap. XT front derailler. SRAM PC-48 chain. Welgo SPDs and BMX flats. Bontrager bar-ends. Switched seat and post out with a Velo seat off a cheaper Fisher, black seat post looks much nicer than the stock silver.
Bottom Line:I've had the bike for under a year (got it for Christmas last year). It has been kept lubed and clean. Didn't really expect to be riding it off rode so much. I try to ride it on the weekends as much as possible, as well as riding it to class ocasionally and attempts at urban assualt. Recently I had to replace the crank set after I discovered the Acera crank was too worn to accept a new chain. The chain broke and wore quickly. The Acera chainrings are one piece and can not be replaced individually. They showed a lot of wear in what didn't seem like a whole lot of riding. I anticipate having to replace at least the rear wheel soon. The Weinman rims are not very sturdy. The rear wheel has had to be re-trued several times and has a permanant dent/bend and lots of wear on the rim. Front wheel has stayed true. Front and rear rims have an uneven seam that I had to sand down but still causes a slight jump in braking. The Jett fork is pretty inadaquate for off-road riding, and I plan on replacing it soon. It has little travel and doesn't do much on rocky desents or stairs. Acera front derailler limits you to a 42T chainring. I probably should replace the brake pads and rear tire soon. The bike is a great deal, but some of the lower end components don't stand up to abuse. If you actually ride this bike off road expect to replace some components within a year.

Bottom Line:Get rid of the fork, tires, rims, brakes, seat, frt derailleur, and handlebar, replace with a Zoke z1 bam, hayes 8" discs (I made a rear mount), good rubber, azonic parts, and you have a good ride that takes about any kind of beating. Good welds. I give it 3 chilis just because the frame rocks. Long top tube. throw away the rest.

Bottom Line:this is a great bike for the price (even though I got it for free). I had a shop localy for 6 years and have ridden alot of bikes. The Tassajarra has a great all around feel.
You could ride it to class or down the roughest terrain. The wheels could be better along with a few other things mentioned above, but thats what more expensive models are for. I dont think you could get more bang for your buck anywhere else. I would suggest this bike to anybody looking for a low end competition or a ride around town bike. If you make a few minor modifications either way you can get a great bike and not feel like you wish you would have gotten the next model up so you could add this or that. GREAT BIKE !!!!!

Strengths:Strong Genisis geometry frame, LX rear derauiller, plush fork, rapid fire shifters, riser bar, good price, nice, grippy WTB tires, phat serfas grips.
Weaknesses:had to change out elastomers/springs becasue I was too light, no option or trade in given.
Low end front derailuer, single wall rims.

Bike Setup:manitou Magnum Fork 3 in travel, LX rear derailluer, generic shimano cranks, alivio/stx rapidfire shifters, bontager rims w/ WTB velociraptor tires
Bottom Line:excellent bike for the money, weaknesses are minor when compared to overall value. Genisis geometry and short chainstays puts more weight over rear wheel giving better traction when climbing. I plan on riding the bike until the stock components break and then upgrade. riser bar is an added bonus that gives more control plus a wider arm stance allowing for freer breathing- a nice touch, often overlooked by many bike companies offering bicycles in the same price range. buy it-you won't regret it-thats the bottom line cause stew said so.

The only problem is the front derailer sometimes doesn't catch correctly. and I don't know anything about the stock seat because it was so hard that I had it replaced before I left the store. Stock 2000 Tassajara--same as 1999 but w/monitou magnam fork, bontrager rims, aluminum pedals
color scheme: silver/black
I paid $550 for the 2000 for the extras even though it was only $450 for the 1999. I think it is worth it.
Bottom Line:Although the bike feels heavy to pick up, it rides pretty light due to the geometry -- short handle bar stem and seat sits further back over wheel. This gives better control up front and more power is translated to the back wheel for great climbing power. The magnum fork has 76mm of travel and felt significantly better than RS Jett C's. Acera front deraileurs gave some trouble in the parking lot, but never used it on the trail; rear LX's shift lightning quick. Stock tubes are really thin and got 2 flats riding through a field with stickers. Lower end tire pressure seems to work better with this bike. Seat is hard to sit on but not bad to ride on, if that makes sense. Overall, a great handling bike with lots of good parts (except the little used front derailer) that should last. The Gary Fisher has a geometry different from the other $500 bikes and the 2000 model has better parts. Definitely worth it.

Strengths:
Great looking bike, but most importantly, it's the most overall bang for your buck for a bike in the $499 range. Better components than all other competitors in that range, and even some in the $550-$600 range.
Accellerates fast, climbs great, stops on a dime. Removable RDH.
Weaknesses:
Ridiculously hard WTB seat.
Low end Weinmann 519 rims.
Similar Products Used:
GT Agressor
Specialized Rock Hopper
Diamondback Topanga
Giant Iguana
Bike Setup:
Gary Fisher Tassajara

Bottom Line:This is without a doubt, the best sub $500 bike on the market. All components exceed other bikes. Wish it had T2s and better rims, but there goes the sub $500 market. I absolutely love the feel of this bike on all surfaces. The WTB Primal Raptor tires are superb on any surface. This is an all around nimble and well designed bike which stands out from the crowd when used in the arena it was meant for. Don't want to jump up to $800 or$1000 yet? This is the next best thing.

Bottom Line:I have not yet tried this bike on a rigorous trail, but on the street and light trails, so far, so good. This is my frist aluminum frame, and it was a little stiff at first unitl I noticed that the tires were overinflated. It is still stiff, but much more reasonable now. I have had no trouble with the front derailleur. At $469, it was the best for the money. The Giant was a close second, but the components were slightly better on the Fisher. I'll start out giving it 5 flaming things, but will post another review if my opinion changes.

Bottom Line:This is an ok beginner bike. I wish that I had spent some more money and moved up a bike or two. The Seat that came with the bike came apart in less then a week . The bike feels light incomparision to my last bike. It accelerates well and I can top it out on flat ground at about 29mph. Before buying this bike consider looking at more expensive bikes if you plan on upgrading. I will give it 4 stars, because of the crappy factory components and the problem with the seat. Overall you get what you payed for a 500$ bike. It did have some nicer components then others in it's price range.

Bottom Line:The only thing that I haven't had problems with on this bike is the drivetrain. Before I made the purchase, I checked the spec's at Fisher's web site. They listed the fork as being a Jett C with 72mm of travel. The local bike shop had apperently read the same lie. It wasn't until after I bought the thing that I found out the Jett C's are only 45mm. Now that doesn't mean they're bad shocks, but I want to know what I'm paying for. Fisher could'nt even get the manual right. The one they included with the bike was for Judy's. The only customer service # I could find in the bike manual had been disconecting, so I emailed them. Three days later I get a smart mouthed reply that basicly said Too bad, sucker.
Then, the first day I took it off road, I bent the rear wheel when the cheesy tube blew. Fisher put lightweight 1.5's in the Primal Raptor 47/52's. That, combined with the weak wheels, is nothing but trouble. With what I had to spend on a new rear wheel and a seat that isn't as hard as a brick, I could have gotten the Trek 6000 and had a much better bike.

I like the geometry of this frame. As a small rider (5'10, 150 lbs), the size Small frame worked out really well for me. The bike weighed in well at under 30 lbs.
Weaknesses:
Nothing really above average component-wise. Then again, at this price point the only thing that really varies is whose frame you buy- the components are almost the same on all the bikes I looked at. Bottom line to me is that as stuff breaks or I decide it's too heavy, I'll replace it with better components. I should emphasize this is a weakness of ALL the bikes at this price point, NOT just Gary Fisher.

Bottom Line:

Anyone looking into an entry level mountain bike
should really consider the Tassajara.
The thing I love about this bike is its sharp steering.
Some of the highly priced dualies have steering
that makes you feel like chucking it to the nearest trash can.
I also like the grippy tires which would make this a great ride
on wet and muddy conditions. The Rock Shox Jett
fork is perfect for light to mild trail conditions.
This is the same fork I have for my current
hardtail. I don't see why one should
upgrade anything on this bike except maybe put on
some of them $400.00 Spinergy wheel sets. Naw,
I think I'll save those for my next road bike.
(The Tassajara would kick ass in the design dept. though)
All Mountain Bikers should have at least one
hardtail. The Tassajara along with some of the
others made by Schwin, Trek, Specialized, Cannondale,
GT. 5 chillies for this guy. Functionality is
what you need. Tassajara comes with it.
