Favorite Trail:Very Technical
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Bike Line
Strengths:Very Durable. Genesis Geometry is the best! It's so easy to maneuver while riding uphill, over trees, or anywhere. The price is right!
Weaknesses:Pedals and saddle (but that's the same for most bikes). The fork is outdated now, so I'm hoping to get a Manitou Black or a Fox Fork soon.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher 1999 Tassajara
Bike Setup:I replaced the pedals, saddle, handlebars, and the big chainwheel. Now I have Crank Bros. Egg Beater pedals, WTB Speed V saddle, Easton Monkeylite riser handlebar, and a Salsa bash guard.
Bottom Line:In 1999, I bought a Tassajara and my dad bought the Kaitai. After riding his bike a few times, I told him that he needed a new bike and I needed the Kaitai. On the trails it feels like a part of your body. It has stood up to trees, rocks, and bashing on other types of terrain. I ride my bikes hard, and this one seems to be able to take the heat. After two Fisher bikes, I will not ride anything else. If somehow it got totaled one day, and it wasn't rideable, I'd go right out to the bike shop and buy a new one. I think this bike is perfect for anybody just getting into the sport, or who has experience in racing.

Favorite Trail:New Light, Rocky Road, Governor's Creek
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $600.00
Strengths:Durability, this bike has survived more wrecks than I can count
Weaknesses:Stock cranks, drive train, seat
Bike Setup:Upgraded cranks/drivetrain to 9 spd LX/XT
Bottom Line:This bike has just been replaced by an '01 Fuel as my off-road bike after taking some serious abuse. I got this bike in 1999 after not riding for 5 years and basically relearned how to ride on it. During the last 2 years the bike has survived several high speed impacts with rocks and trees, and has probally kept me out of the emergency room on more than one occassion. Even though I just got the Fuel, I'm keeping the KaiTai as my back-up/cruising bike, just throwing some slicks on it. A great bike to learn basic skills on.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:Bikes USA
Strengths:Great bike for the money, genesis geometry rocks, good reliabilty, looks sweet
Weaknesses:Saddle and pedals have to go immediately. Alivio front derailleur sucks but I can live with it, brakes aren't that good either but just get some better pads
Similar Products Used:Quite a few including Scott, Specialized and Giant in about the same price range
Bike Setup:Added fat barends, STX cranks, new saddle, clipless pedals
Bottom Line:Ever since I started riding this bike I'm a Fisher patriot. It handles pretty well (not great) and both climbing and downhill are a breeze. I've tortured this thing for 3 years now and all I've managed to bust were the front chainrings on tougher climbs (twice). Great for a beginner, gradually upgrade as your wallet allows (try to go for full XT) and eventually you'll have an awesome bike cause the frame doesn't leave much to desire.

PS cut off the rubber protection things on the fork and it looks much better, havn't had any problems w/ it yet

Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Bar Harbor Bike in Ellsworth
Strengths:This bike is awesomely stiff and stable. Wicked forgiving. I climbed on it after not riding for four years confident I would eat dirt and have not seen the asphault yet.
Weaknesses:The grips sweat and roll on the bars a bit. The saddle leaves a lot to be desired in the comfort department. The peddles do not belong on this bike. Upgrade the peddles and the seat and you will be all set.
Similar Products Used:1993 GT Karakorum - which sucked out loud. A 1997 Scott front suspension which was rugged, but nothing like the Katai.
Bike Setup:It has LX all around except for the crank which is a shimano "A" with a shimano "A" deralleur. Rock Shox Judy C front suspension with Bontrager Corvair wheels and hubs. The front is radial laced.
Bottom Line:THIS BIKE ROCKS. I got a good deal buying last years model (when I bought it) for $300 off the tagged price. It is an XL so pretty much only I can ride it. It is rugged as hell and I would totally buy another Fisher if I ever have to replace this one. I have never ridden a bike this rugged or forgiving. I would highly recommend this bike for anyone who wants to spend all of their time off the beaten path. It is definitely not a road bike. It begs to be beaten up and thrashed. You should not own a fisher if you plan to ride on the sidewalk.

Purchased At:Just purchased the Frame. UC cyc
Strengths:The first thing I noticed about the bike was the geometry. Gary Fisher makes a wonderful frame. The frame is light and strong, and takes just about anything i do to it.
Weaknesses:The two major problems with this frame is the decending prowess and the cornering ability. The top tube is placed at a angle that takes away from the cornering and puts it to comfort.

Strengths:Reasonable price, great paint job, good handling, versitile, when pushed it can fly
Weaknesses:The Alivio Crank four bolt setup I bent on my first ride but after replaced by the shop with the same crank it held. You have to replace the brakes do to the fact that they suck.
Bike Setup:I only replaced the pedals with Bontrager RE-1 clipless, and a Bontrager Crowbar riserbar.
Bottom Line:Gary Fisher giving you a deal so take it. I've seen one of my best friends spend over $4000 dollars to upgrade his Shwinn Homegrown and I can still keep up with him. Just remember its not always the bike thats the problem. This is a great bike for someone who wants to get serious but can't afford more. Bike Setup:Upgraded Crank (Sachs), Front Der (XT), Saddle (Bonti FS+10), Pedals (Wellgo 800 SPD), Grips (Oury); Added Coda Paquito Bar Ends
Bottom Line:This is a long term review of my 99 Kaitai. I had not ridden a bike in years, but as my kids got older I wanted a bike again. I got a hardtail MTB so that I could do bike paths with the family and also do XC riding with friends who are serious riders/racers.

In short, I love this bike. It was served me very well over the last 2 years. The fact is that if your not a serious rider $1500 - 2000 is a lot to spend on a ride. The $600 I spent was a good compromise for me (enough that I got some good parts [Judy, LX] and not too much to have to get divorced.)

I have had some durability issues with the component selection, though. I ride about once a week from April to October, 5-10 miles per ride. I replaced the chain after about a year (I'd estimate that was 350 miles tops.) I found that the middle ring on the crap Alivio crank was toast as well as the cheap BB. I ended up buying a whole new crankset, becuase getting the right "Alivio" ring (a standard LX would not fit) turned out to be a HUGE pain in the ass. I'm also wishing that the drive train was 9speed. Finding upgrade parts for the 8s trans. is difficult.

I was also unhappy with the BB mount front der. It was causing too much chain cross over resulting in poor shifting. I replaced that with XT and the shifting has improved.

This said, the bike has been great. It's not super light, which is OK since I don't race. And the heavier rims have lasted well. I'm a heavy rider (6' 0" 220#) and finesse is not my strong suit. I have definitely learned how to XC, clear obsticles and gained skills, thanks to a great bike. I really like the Genesis Geomerty, will definitely consider another Gary Fisher for my next bike. And now that I understand more, I'll proably flip for a more expensive bike.

If you are on a budget and are willing to upgrade parts as they wear-out, excellent choice.

Strengths:Nice Frame, good colors, i can't say the same for the the 2000. strong wheel set very durable, genesis geometry, feels comfortable offroad, strong, and feels close to the ground for more control and balance
Weaknesses:BB. cranks. handle bars. seat post. front and rear deraileurs. saddle. brakes.. levers big time. cassette. low end parts but the shifting works well, chain is a bit much.
Similar Products Used:Rockey Vapor

Bottom Line:This is a great bike to own I really like, the parts are low end mostly, but with a few upgrades its a beautiful smooth bike good for offroad and on road, I recommend it for anyone is starting to ride. it is a good bike for most people but it does have it limits and you should know what you want before you buy a bike. this bike will take punishment but only to a certain level before stuff starts to fail. the crank set on it is one of the weakest spot with the 4 bolt pattern there is to much space between each bolt to keep it strong and will bend on tough offroad.

Strengths:pretty and nice name...(okay, my girlfriend made me write that.) Now for the real stuff...This is her bike, but I have yet to find a bike that handles quite like this one. The geometry is great. I'm 6'0" and her bike is a size SMALL and it's still comfortable for me. The way it handles is also really good. The fork has some preload adjusters, so you can really stiffen it up if you want. I've raced this in a Dual Slalom, and it handled/held up VERY WELL!
Weaknesses:The only complaint here is that the components are not the top of the line, but for the price...I can't complain at all.

Strengths:Good value. Can be found cheap. Good frame that can be upgraded while not wasting your money (Component Spec, screams for upgrade). Genesis Geometry.
Weaknesses:Most components are basic(that's why it doesn't cost a grand or more). Crankset, Front D, Saddle (switched saddle after test riding the bike in the store), pedals. Bent chainring with only moderate riding. Old Alivio crank and bottom bracket weigh a ton compared to my new XT.
Bike Setup:'99 Kaitai, XT crankset, XT front & rear D, Time atac pedals, Easton Monkeylite carbon riser bar, Rock Shox susp. seatpost, Spec. Body Geometry Comp. Saddle, and???
Bottom Line:This a follow-up review after 6months of riding my Kaitai. I bought the bike as a first mountain bike. I now wish I would have bought a more expensive bike with many of the components that I have switched. I had no idea that I would aquire such a serious addiction to two wheels and dirt. I think I need professional help. Only trips to area bike shops, followed by immediate doses of some serious singletrack to test out my new toys, enable me to stay sane.

I once heard that if your serious about riding then you should get the most expensive bike you can afford. That's probably good advice, becuase in the end its probably cheaper. I have learned alot though, and have had fun upgrading my bike. The Kaitai is a great first bike and can be found for a reasonable price. However, many of the components are basic. If you catch this disease like me, and have an insatiable desire for dirt, then this bike can be upgraded forever due to its quality frame (and basic components).

If you can afford more , then buy more. If you can't or are just starting out and are unsure of your seriousness, this is a good bike that you can always add to later.

Recently the bike was killing my back & I was about to get a full suspension when I realized my frame was cracked. I'm waiting on Fisher to send the replacement(it's been one week). This bike can definitely be raced with a few minor upgrades, and for the price it just can't be beat. If I had to do it again, I probably would have just bought a bike with all the components I want already on it. However, I would highly recommend this bike to the budget minded enthusiast in the market for their first bike, or the budget minded person who wants a great frame that can be upgraded on as they desire.

If you are a sixty-five year old granny that likes to go riding with her family, buy it! It is a great bike for anyone except for racers who love biking so much that they would sacrafice cows to them (like i will someday). Since i live in the middle of kansas, riding gets kind of boring, and im 15, so i cant drive anywhere by myself. Me and some of my friends from football that are seniors go out to lawrence and missouri about every other weekend and we have been to colorado twice this summer. out in crested butte, this bike was great! it handled singletrack with such grace and finess that i dont think i could ever go back to regular geometry. With the exception of the saddle and pedals, the upgrades were not mandatory, just preferential (and part of my self-education in bike maintenance). Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Frame, Rims, tires, fork
Weaknesses:Componentry- Crank, Brakes, Front derailleurs, and saddle.
Bike Setup:LX-crank, brakes (new style), and front derailleur. Stiffer springs installed in Judy fork, Shimano 545 pedals, Shimano UN72 bottom bracket.
Bottom Line:This has been a great bike for me. When I set out to purchase a bike last year, I was looking for a bike that had all the components that I wanted. I had my eye on the Paragon at first but had to accept the reality that my pocket book did not allow it. I bought the Kaitai because it was cheaper and it was on sale! WoooHooo!
Dispite having some cheaper components, this is not a bad bike. After riding the bike for two months, my rear V-brake broke. Since the bike was still under warranty, this was not too much of a problem. This got me thinking about upgrading my components. The rear derailluer is Shimano LX and the front derailluer is Alivio? I never understood why bike manufactures seem to put a cheaper derailluer on the front than what is on the back. Since this all involves the transmission part of the bike, it only makes sense to have these two components match. Also, the saddle is a little hard on the fruit of the loom!
Since how I am a heavy rider, I thought the fork had too weak of springs for my taste. Stiffer springs were in order here. For a lighter rider, the fork springs would probably be OK.
After doing all of the upgrading, I have a bike that really rocks. Handling of the bike is great. Frame geometry is perfect. This is a great starter bike for someone just getting into mountain biking. The price does not put you on the streets and it gives you a good base to upgrade on. I give it 5 chilis for value and 4 chilis for overall rating due to the brake problem and the cheaper stock components that came on the bike. Bottom Line:This is my first *real* mtn bike. I finally got rid of my old '93 Nisiki. I was looking for a frame worth upgrading later on if I wanted. This is it! The more I ride this bike, the more I love it!
The genesis geom. makes climbing a breeze. I'm 5'10" and and the medium frame fits like a glove. The shocks seem fine to me -- I weigh 170 lbs. The saddle is quite hard -- I may fix that in the near future. My next purchase will be clipless pedals.
I would recommend this bike to any and every person wishing to purchase a great intermediate level bike for no more than 1 month's rent. You can always upgrade with discontinued components for cheap later on :-)

Bottom Line:Great bike for the price! I looked around for quite awhile before getting my Kaitai and had actually considered buying a lesser bike until it went on sale. I got a great deal at my LBS-Mission Cyclery of Bonita, CA www.missioncyclery.com I think they still have some left. This is my first mountain bike, and I think it was a great choice. It has a good frame with Genesis Geometry, and is a bike that you can upgrade without wasting your money. I recently went on my first serious night ride with some other more experienced riders with all sorts of set-ups. The Kaitai never allowed me to embarass myself--it was very stable and gave me a great deal of confidence on a variety of terrain. Five Flamin' Chilitos!

Similar Products Used:Cannondale F300, Trek 6000, Giant
Bike Setup:Switched to firm springs in the fork, awaiting Avid 1.9 levers, V25 Brakes and Shimano 545 pedals.
Bottom Line:I was looking at getting back into riding, and having always had Cannondale road bikes went and looked at their mountain bikes. I tried a discontinued M800 Beast of the East, which fit me horribly and rode like a rock. I then tried an F300 which was about the worst bike I have ever ridden. If you pulled the front end up, you felt the shock clunk as it topped out.

I then tried a Trek 6000 which felt much better and I would have considered seriously had I not tried a Fisher Aquila. When I got on the Fisher, I knew that it fit me right. I then tried a Giant, not bad but it didn't feel as good. I happened to run accoss a discontinued 99 Kaitai, rode it and knew that it was the right bike. Being that I was going to mostly be riding canal trails until the weather dries, I had the dealer swap the tires for trek invert 2 tires.

The bike rides wonderfully, especially after I had the front springs switched to the firm ones (I am 6'00" and 225lbs). I absolutely love it an look forward to riding it whenever time and the weather allow. My only complaints are the front derailer does not always shift smoothly, and the brakes are not as good as I would like. I am gong to upgrade to Avid brakes, so that should be fixed soon. Concerning the comments about the seat, I didn't like it the first few rides, but now love it since I got is adjusted correctly.

I am absolutely sold on Gary Fisher bikes and will by another when this one is worn out. The only thing I would do differently if I did it again, would be to plunk down the extra money for last years X-Caliber. This bike deserves 6 chilis, I can't wait to go and ride it.

Fantastic frame, both in terms of geometry and built quality. In fact this frame is extremely similar to higher end frames used on the Procaliber model and some of Gary Fisher finest bikes (except for the slightly heavier weigth of the frame and the fact that it doesn't feature disk brake capability).
The bike behave extremely well: it is quick, fast and truly responsive. It almost react before you think about your moves ;). Very good stability; even on snow. The stock tires appear to be very good.
Weaknesses:
Some cheaps mechanical parts (alivio). I have problems to rapidly shift speeds sometime which may be truly annoying in extreme situations. The paint job... Actually, i am not talking about the look of it which i find ok but about the quality of the paint used by itself. I haven't crashed with the bike so far but there is already few dent on the frame. No brake capability (or at least not on the frame for the rear wheel). I could have liked to eventually upgrade to disk brakes but i can't....

Bottom Line:This is a great bike for someone who isn't all about the benjamins. I'm a poor college student, and I was able to scrape up enough funds to purchase one. I've had a great time on this bike, but I had to upgrade a couple things. First, I don't dig the clip-and-strap pedal thing, so I put some ritcheys on. Second, I'm all about Kevlar tires, so when I bought the bike, I had the shop swap the stocks for a stellar set of Continental Leader Pros. I'm not too happy with the alivio junk that comes on this bike, but for the price, I shouldn't be so picky. Even after the pedals and tires, I spent about $670. Also, it seems to be very durable. I drilled a tree on a nasty downhill once, and the bike came out pretty much unharmed. I was a little scuffed up though. I would definately recomend the Kaitai to anyone who can't afford a beefhouse bike, but loves to ride hard. Happy thrashin'.

In 4 inch deep mud, semi-thick, going about 30 - Sure, it slowed the bike down, and the front and rear fishtailed (weird thought, 2 tailed fish, no head...) anyway, both sides fishtailing, but I didn't worry ONCE about falling over. Did the same thing with a friends bike, nearly got a mouthful of mud! The genesis geometry is incredible, takes a little while to get used to, but decending is incredible, and you climb like a mt goat! Gary Fisher's reputation and warantee are great too... 1 year on components (but I've heard about them taking it more than a year), LIFETIME frame warantee!!!! If you have more money to spend, go get yourself a Big Sur. I'm talking about the '99, the 2000 model has upgraded some, so its more expensive. Bottom Line:Do your research. Dont just take my word for it- go out there and try all the bikes out there. Talk to people and friends. Doing all of the above, I chose the G. Fisher KaiTai, being very confident and pleased with my choice. The frame has the same Genesis geometry as all the higher level Fishers (Procaliber, Joshua, Level Betty, etc) Why? Because it really does work. Its not totally extreme to mess up your ride balance, but the longer top tube and corresponding short stem helps. The short stem itself helps a lot in making the bike nimble and quick. Those of you who complain that Genesis is bad for really steep climbs-Learn how to climb! If the bike is fitted to you, and you have bar ends, you shouldn't have any problems. I ride in the Denver area and all Denver rides have big climbs in the begining-not a problem for my KaiTai. Its my own physical conditioning that limits my ride, not my bike.WTB Velociraptor tires have good traction, saddle is comfortable. Drivetrain is adequate, and brakes will stop you. Lots of room to upgrade, but its a good start for 7 C-notes. Pedals need to go up to clipless.I tried the Moab 2 (good components) and although tempting, the KaiTai's short stem really makes the whole package so much more nimble (but not necessarily less stable!). Kona NuNu was also tempting (nice Marzocchi fork), but in the end, I kept coming back to the KaiTai. Wasn't very impressed at all with the Treks. Bottom line, its an awesome frame with average components. For $699, its a bike you can grow with.

Strengths:
Nice frame, good components.
Weaknesses:
No major issues.
Similar Products Used:
Trek 6500
Bike Setup:
Standard components, with addition of racing handlebars.
Bottom Line:After riding both the Trek 6500 and the Kaitai, I had trouble deciding between the two. Both have similar components, frame, and shock. I ended up with the Kaitai because the bike shop was local, and had a good reputation. I have had very good luck so far. The Judy C is a must have, as the dampening makes for a very nice ride. As far as the 'Genesis' geometry, it does seem to help--though I wouldn't choose the bike just because of that.
Overall, a very nice bike.

Strengths:
As a taller rider, the Genesis Geometry worked well for me.
Nice component selection for the price.
Weaknesses:
Some of the OEM choices are a bit thin (pedals, cranks, front deraillur) but overall it's a good platform to build on.
Similar Products Used:
GT Ricochet
Kona Cinder Cone
Rocky Mountain Soul
Schwinn Moab 3
Specialized Rockhopper A1FS
Bike Setup:
Upgraded to LX front derailleur and crank, TIME ATAC Alum pedals, WTB SSTX seat (original seat broke). Also looking at bar ends, stem and possibly brakes. Happy with the Judy C so far.
Bottom Line:Very happy with the purchase. At the time the jump to the Fisher Big Sur seemed to be a bit much, in retrospect, it might have been the right thing to do. I have been very happy with the ride, both climbing, single track and downhill. The key for this bike was the fit. With each upgrade I have become happier with the overall performance.

Bottom Line:Replaced my heavy old GT Timberline with this light and nimble steed. Very impressed with genesis geometry that helps to distribute your weight to the rear wheel for a more comfortable riding position without being too far back to affect uphill riding. This geometry especially suits the larger sized rider. This is why I chose the kaitai over the Kona NuNu. The Judy's upfront do a good job at soaking up the bumps and i haven't bottomed out on them yet
Nice all around package at fantastic price! ($630)

Strengths:
Aluminum frame, Judy long travel fork, great balance - eats up the single track, good climber
Weaknesses:
Pedals and Grips suck (minor quibbles)
Feels a bit nervous at high speed
Similar Products Used:
GT Backwoods
GT Karakoram
Fisher Aquila (Kaitai worth the extra $$)
KHS Alite 1000 and 2000
Brodie Torque (ALMOST bought)
Bike Setup:
99 Stock
- Shimano Deore
- Judy C Long Travel fork
- Bontrager corvair wheelset
Bottom Line:Love it so far after 150 km's and 1 leg gouging wipe out - it's a sweet ride. Much quicker and more nimble than my old Schwinn Moab 2. I find the grips very slippery when sweaty though.
Pedals will be upgraded to clipless. Black Bontrager rims look great with yellow frame - hopefully they will function as good as they look.
Will add a follow up report later this summer after I pile up some mileage. I'll give it a solid 4.5 chilis!! (ah hell make it 5)
Ride on!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottom Line:Great bike im defenitaly going to buy it. I have been resarching for about 2 months now and i am ready to buy. The genis geometry is great.
It is almost useless to get a big sur they have the same frame and you can always add components later. I only wish it can with clipless pedeals. The bike i have know is a old old trek 850 which has fallen apart since i got which was only a year ago. THis is my FIRST real bike.I SUBMIT A FALLOW UP ON IT LATER AFTER I'VE HAD IT A WHILE

Bottom Line:I recommend this bike for the budget-minded intermediate rider, which I am. The componets (front der. etc.) are easilbly upgraded and the fork is sweet for the price tag. Got it on sale for $700.00. Great bike. Recommended highly

Bottom Line:this bike is basically only an entry level ride. i couldn't feel the genesis geometry in this bike at all (i could in the big sur). it rides very upright: making it relatively good for climbing and medium downhill, but overall; NOT a bike i'd think to buy. :)

Strengths:
This bike has a great frame and the Genesys Geometry theory really does make a big difference in responsiveness and it also makes going down hills a bit eisier because your center of gravity is lower.
Weaknesses:
The components are definitely entry level. The Rock/Shock is OK, but it is near the bottom of it's class. The Shimano components are also towards the lower end. The brakes are effective (unless you are going downhill in the rain), but brandless.
Bike Setup:
Default components
Bottom Line:This is by no means a poor performer even with factory components. I just started riding mountain bikes three months ago and I have learned a few things since I started, although I chose to change out the shifters, cartridge, rear derailer, and brakes to Shimano XT I still feel that most riders will be perfectly satisfied with this bike without upgrading it. However, if you are like me (never satisfied with what you have), even as a novice you will find yourself upgrading if you ride any other bike that has superior components. If that is the case, you might do better to start out with the Fisher Big Sur which uses the same frame as the Kaitai but features better components. Overall, I really like my Bike and I am planning to keep it for a long time.

I've had my Kaitai for five months. It handles great, shock is plush but the alivio sucks. I upgraded my pedals to Specialized clipless pedals. A great improvement. The weight is decent but changing the WTB tires is a royal pain in the ass. I ride it two or three times a month and it needs minimal repairs. Grease your pedal threads. Gary makes a great bike.a

I bought the bike about two months ago for $699. I have since upgraded the pedals to Shimano XTS clipless. It is a tremendous improvement over my previous bike and what you might call my first real bike. It is awesome! I love it! The Judy shock has a real smooth return and the aluminum frame is light. I reccommend this bike highly!!
