Favorite Trail:Kanata
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Strengths:Good value, will either love or hate frame geometry, weight, reliable. Traction and especially when climbing.
Weaknesses:Will either love or hate frame geometry, a little more travel would have been nice, not the most comfortable seat
Similar Products Used:Tried out many hard tails in same price range, including specialized, gt, cannon, rocky mountian
Bike Setup:Stock, except for new seat and tires (obviously, the bike is nearly 6 years old).
Bottom Line:Ride what it is made for, fast single track, and you should have no problem. I Don't maintain it properly and have had no serious problems. Forks do their job, traction and climbing is the real strength of this bike, because of geometry. However, don't buy this bike if you like real downhilling, the geometry of the frame keeps your weight far back, but high on the bike. I love this bike as it fits my riding style. As a general peice of advice: find your particular riding style and find a bike that favours this style.

Favorite Trail:I've never met a trail I didn't like
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $75.00
Purchased At:Kid who decided he wanted to race BMX
Strengths:Strong frame, light enough at price. Genesis geometry works for me. At the price I paid (w/o wheelset, suspension fork and headset, but with full XT and Avid Arch Rival brakes + some other nice upgrades), I've got about $500 into the bike and couldn't be happier. The Big Sur, as others have said, climbs very well. Downhill stability is good. Steering is nice compromise. I really like the standard fit Velociraptors tires.
All around, about the nicest bike available at the $1000 price point (MSRP).
Weaknesses:Paint (acid green) not only chips, but is butt ugly, IMHO, kind of '70s. The bike is hard to build light, kind of a catch-22 as the bike warrants upgrades because it is so sweet, but going overboard makes no sense because you still end up with a 25lbs+ hardtail bike...
Similar Products Used:GT, Klein, Specialized.
Bike Setup:Full XT, Avid Arch Rival 50 brakes, Titec bar and stem, Cane Creek S2 headset, Mavic X517 w/XT hubs, Serfas Cosmos seat, WTB Velociraptor tires, Psylo XC suspension fork
Bottom Line:If you can live with a 26-27 lbs. hardtail, you can't do any better at this price level!

Submitted by Ben a Weekend Warrior from Australia
Date Reviewed: July 7, 2002
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $600.00
Strengths:Extremely strong frame, but light also.
Good Judy XC forks
Overall bike works really well and is very well built with quality components.
Weaknesses:Bent the seat rails on a jump the first ride (I am 85kg)
Bent the seatpost badly - now replaced with stronger one
Front derailler could be better
Front hub needs replacing - can't buy new cones for Bontrager hubs so whole hub must be junked

Similar Products Used:All the similar spec/price bikes at the time ... Giant, Kona, Jamis, Specialised, etc, etc.
Bike Setup:As well as replacing the few bits which bent/broke, I have fitted a Titec riser bar, Tioga Factory DH 2.3's (just fit - and are really good), and DH platform pedals.
Bottom Line:This is a great XC bike and I have been riding it hard since I bought it with great reliability. I am even doing some freeride type stuff on it now and although the geometry is not perfect for it, it still handles the jumps/drops with ease (if a little bit stiffly in the rear end). It is great for climbing. The long wheelbase means it doesn't handle tight corners as well as some shorter bikes. Definitely worth the money.

Price Paid: $950.00
Purchased At:formerly bike usa (now performance)
Strengths:- Geometry
- Value (more bang for your buck)
- Wheels
- Black paint
Weaknesses:- Paint cheaps easily
- Too much GARY FISHER all over the frame
- Heavy
Similar Products Used:OPB, mongoose, Trek, cannondale, etc..etc..etc.
Bike Setup:gt hubs laced to mavic 517, xt brakes, lx grouppo
Bottom Line:overall the bike kicks ass with its genesis geometry. climbing just feels so much easier and descending is a lot more stable than with other bikes. cornoring in single track is pretty good too. unfortuneatly the paint job sucks. after a crash, there where several spots that chipped, and it just kept on getting worse. that really sucked!! after a few crashes and several trips, the frame appeared to be much older than it really was.

Weaknesses:Weaknesses.. I had a few problems with some wierd squeaking when it shifted.. was unable to get rid of that..

I ended up buying a new Devinci Chili Pepper shortly thereafter (after the crying had stopped). Don't let strangers test your bike out.. unless you have a loaded gun handy (or something dangerous). Favorite Trail:Little Big Econ Forest (Snow Hill)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Used from a good friend
Strengths:I am writing this view on how I feel about the Geometry of the bike mostly because my Big Sur is older then a 1999. The Bike is the same as mine with upgrade componets.
Love the Geometry, Great for winding in and out of trees on Florida trails. For the price I paid for a bike worth around $900, I am pretty happy with my Big Sur. I have been riding this bike for six years now and have not had too many problems. I have not had any paint come off other then where I accidentally scratched the frame with something, but who really cares, its a mountain bike not a car.... you expect this sort of thing to happen when you are riding in the woods.
Weaknesses:None significant, The Seat post needs to be tight.
Similar Products Used:Trek,
Bike Setup:Mostly stock, Replaced the pedals (broke them, plastic) with some clipless pedals. Replaced the skinny, hard road bike seat with something more fit for a mountain bike.
Bottom Line:I would pay full price for this bike knowing what I know about it.

Strengths:1. GEOMETRY
2. Wheelset
3. VERY Strong setup

4. Seat post will NOT stay in the same place.

Bottom Line:This bike is the best I've ridden so far. The only mechanical problems I've had have been normal drivetrain bullsh*t and a blown oil cartridge in the shock. Realize that this is after about 3000 miles of riding and the oil cartridge busted after several hard core mountain trails. I really dig this bike and have no thoughts of replacing it anytime soon. Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:Cycle Sport Cincinnatti
Strengths:The Gary Fisher name and decent components for the price is what attracted me. Geometry is fantastic. It is very quick and nimble on single tracks, an awesome climber and it is simply killer on the downhill sections.
Weaknesses:Junk Seat, Heavy WTB Velociraptors, Icon Pedals don't have any float.
Similar Products Used:OPB - Other Peoples Bikes - This is my first serious MTB purchase and I am quite happy.
Bike Setup:(Red)Panaracer Fire XC Pro's, Shimano 747 Pedals, Tamer Shock post. I Want to upgrade to XT components, CrossMax Wheels, and RockShox SID Race or SL shock.
Bottom Line:I started riding on other peoples bikes but they got tired of me crashing them. This is my first real mountain bike and I have crashed it hard several times. Once I even broke my helment. (Bell - Good Stuff) This bike takes a beating and keeps on flying through thick and thin. Durable and reliable with reasonable upkeep. This is a great bike for the money. I even had two friends (beginners) buy the 2001 Big Sur's because for the money it is the best mix of components out there. Bang for you Buck rating is 5 chili's.

Weaknesses:Stock items: Seat, Judy RS, skewers, brakes.
Similar Products Used:Trek 7000, GT Zaskar
Bike Setup:Small changes to stock bits listed above.
Bottom Line:For the money, you can't ask for anything more. Bit heavy, but you can always make is lighter. Climbs hills like no other and keeps you fast on the way down. New Big Sur's have weaker components. Would only buy new frame if this one was stolen, because I don't think I can break it.
Bought as crossover from Road Biking, have gone from beginner to full timer. You pay for the frame, everything else can be swapped out.

Bottom Line:This is my second review. I have now had this bike for about a year and a half (I just washed the thing which compelled me to write another review!) I've ridden at least 700 miles of easy dirt/gravel trails, and probably near 200 miles on pretty rough terrain. I have never had a problem with the components or functioning of the bike as a whole. Paint still looks good (relatively speaking), and I haven't replaced any of the key components yet. I wouldn't have wanted anything else!

Bottom Line:I beat the living hell out of this bike. The trails in WV are by far the toughest in the country. More rocks and roots than anywhere in the nation, and people in this state ride like maniacs; thus they need strong rides. But this bike has taken it all, and still cries for more.

I take maintain this bike very well after each ride hence the reasaon it still likes like new with few minor exceptions. A well-built, well priced machine.

Strengths:This is my second posting after having riden this bike hard for almost two years. There is not enough I can say about thhis bike. I have crashed it, raced it, smashed it, and bashed it. This thing has stood up to everything I've put up at it. The wheels are super strong and not too heavy. The geometry is PERFECTION. That is why every other company is copying it.
Weaknesses:The seat rails are bending on me and I only weigh 160 pounds. The pedals are junk, period. Get 858, Time's, or Frogs
Similar Products Used:Trek 9.8, Bontrager Privateer
Bike Setup:Stock, Avid-mag levers and arch rival 50's(also excellent). Time atac Carbons, King/MAvic/marwiTi wheelset, Conti specialwerks tire
Bottom Line:This bike got me hooked on biking and is my god. I pray to it to let me race fast and not bonk.(hint to all new racers- Dont race with a bad hangover on 90 degree days-Bad idea). The geometry lets me outclimb most people and the rest keeps me going. The chainrings on mine have become bent somehow. I'm not sure why but they are only stx-rc. Keep Riding.

Weaknesses:Fisher's unique frame design takes some time to get used to
Similar Products Used:Comparable Trek, DiamondBack, Cannondales in the $1,000 range
Bike Setup:Standard package. Added clipless pedals.
Bottom Line:The 99 Big Sur is nimble and agile in technical singletrack; light in climbs; steady and responsive in descents; durable and reliable (low maintenance). It is in general a joy to ride. In some respects the shock on the 99 is better than the 2000, and the color is a little more palatable, too.
If you're deciding between getting the frame in a large or a medium (this applies to people who are between 67" and 71" tall, and weigh between 160-185), go with the medium. You'll have more clearance in case you have to bail out.
Because a lot of shops rent these bikes, and overorder, you can find some great deals. I bought mine at CriSports at Mount Snow in Dover, VT, and it was a steal at $600.

Weaknesses:The seat is terrible and the pedals don't let go very good .. i switched both out. The bike is also not geared very well for downhill .. 38 mph is the best I could do. And yes my paint is chipping already too. The 9 speed on the back is a little difficult to fine tune.
Similar Products Used:Bianchi Wannabee, Specialized Rockhopper
Bike Setup:Stock except for a Bianchi saddle, old 747 pedals and little longer stem.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the money. You can't find this component package on any other bike for under $1000 anymore. My performance has improved tremendously on this bike. The Genesis Geometry is perfect for shorter riders. Plus you get to be a moving Fisher advertisement when you're on it.

Strengths:The bike's geometry. I was a little skeptical at first, but after demo'ing several similarly prices bikes, I knew that it "fit" better. Now after riding this bike for six plus months, I'm very pleased. It climbs like a mountain goat, and descends like it's on rails.

The bike's value also is a strength (as this is my first Mt. Bike in 10 years). It's a great bike that I know I can grow into.

(And, not that this matters, but I got the acid green model and have received more positive comments than I would have expected.)
Weaknesses:The bike's "value" is also a weakness ... or, a tradeoff. (More on that later.)
Similar Products Used:I demo'ed similarly priced GT, Specialized, Schwinn, Trek and VooDoo bikes.
Bike Setup:I have replaced the brakes, levers and tires with Avid Arch Rival 50 brakes, SD 2.0 levers and Michelin WildGrippers.
Bottom Line:For you first time buyers (like me) who aren't sure how much you will be riding and want a really good bike to grow into, this is the bike.

This is an excellent bike and a great value. However, if I had know how much I would be riding -- right, hindsight is always 20/20, and I've put almost 800 miles on my bike with about half being offroad -- I would have spent a little more and gotten a Paragon or Mt. Tam. I'm not sorry though.

I will probably upgrade the derailleurs, hubs and cranks over this next season (I think I was a little too hard this winter). The fork is a pig (heavy), but I like the way it rides.

Strengths:Is quite light, and has excelent geometry. Climbs like crazy, very nice downhill feel. Nice mixture of components. Lots of front travel is great!
Weaknesses:The front middle chainring keeps bending. I think this is due to the skinny chain. Will be replaced with 24 speed drivetrain. Rear hub got sloppy quick. Sure wish the shocks had better rebound. Really loud paint job. The decals are clear coated over. My dealer told me that a repaint would void the frame warranty. Luckily I have the black one, and wrapped electrical tape over most of the frame. The rock shock decals came off with the greatest of ease!
Bike Setup:Stock except for seat, and much longer stem.
Bottom Line:I've beat the hell out of this bike, and so far it has stood up well. I can keep up with those guys on the fully suspended bikes on the rough downhills. As long as the bike holds up to the abuse, and keeps working like it has with minor upkeep, it will keep me satisfied for at least awhile until the fully suspended bug comes along!

Similar Products Used:1993 Marin Team Issue
Bike Setup:Race Face cranks and rings, Botrager seat paost, ti-rail leather saddle, Shimano 747 pedals, Mountain Speed springs.
Bottom Line:The bike climbs and descends well. I would attribut this to the Genesis geometry. The LX crankset is weak (too much flex, weak chainrings). I replaced them with Race Face LP forged including chainrings and this took care of the flex problem. One of the factory Roch Shock Judy XC springs broke on the third ride. Rock Shock warrantied it. While waiting for the new spring I installed Mt. Speed (medium) springs. This is a big improvement with a plush ride. The brakes Avid brakes are entry level and could use an upgrade. I plan on going to XT brakes and levers. I probably paid too much for last years model($899), but everything is expensive where I live. There is no real difference in the 2000 model (LX brake levers, no bar ends). All in all this is a great bike for under $1000. With the upgrades I have made I have a bike I can get back into racing with. This bike is great for an occasional race or hard weekend riding. I would recommend this bike to anyone looking for a quality bike.

Strengths:Genesis Geometry!
Relatively good components
Fairly light weight
Weaknesses:Bike didn't come with the cranks that were advertised (Bontrager Comp), came with LX instead.
Stock WTB Racing Raptor tires not very versatile (good in dry hardpack only - suck in the wet).
Bontrager Superstock wheelset nice but probably better suited to sub-200 lb. riders.
Similar Products Used:GT Ricochet
Specialized RockHopper
Bike Setup:Stock (Manitou SX, XT/LX Drivetrain), except Conti CC rear tire, upgraded to WTB XCZ seat.
Bottom Line:Genesis Geomotry is what sold me on this bike. I was previously riding a Spec. RockHopper and was ready to buy another one until I rode the Gary Fisher. This bike fit me like a glove. The (LG) frame is well-suited for my longer torso/shorter legs.

As mentioned above, the stock tires are very condition-specific. At 6'1", 230 lbs. I may have to go with a stronger wheelset, though the light weight and radial lacing of the stock wheels should be a pretty nice setup for most. Also, i'm considering upgrading the LX crankset to a RaceFace as I seem to be getting a little too much flex out of them (again, probably my weight).

Bottom line: this bike rocks. The components are a good mix in this price range (lots of Bontrager), and the shock is pretty nice. The frame is definitely the high point on this bike. Best part: I paid $713.

Bottom Line:This is my second review on this bike, the first was a couple of weeks after I got it didnt really know alot about it at the time, so hear goes a full in depth review of it... For the money this bike Rocks!! I have put 1300 HARD miles on it in a little over 8 months, overall the bike has been great, it came out with some good components for the price, the wheel set seemed to be pretty tough, a little heavy but stayed pretty true... Had a few problems with the rear hub working its self loose every so often, I think I had it tightened 4 times in about a thousand miles... Ended up breaking about 5 spokes over time on the rear wheel too, it was time to have it rebuilt so I just bought a whole new wheelset, gonna use the bontrangers to put slicks on and pound the pavement this winter... Had to replace the crank about the same time, just completely wore out the middle ring, never had a problem with the LX crank, but went ahead and upgraded to XT, Love it... Brakes worked good for about 500 miles, but then started having adjustment problems, I could set them and in about 15 minutes they would be out of adjustment again, so upgraded to XTR... I guess the one thing I had the most trouble with was the LX cassette, it started bending on me after about 500 miles, Ive read the reviews on it and that seems to be a common problem with the LX, went to XT and havent had a problem since.. Rear D is just about wore completely out but still shifts good, in fact I have been so satisfied with it that I havent decided whether to go with XT or XTR when I replace it... The Judy does great I couldnt be any happier with the performance with it, its very plush, takes the big hits great, and absorbs the small ones too, my only gripe is that its a bit on the heavy side, but thats alright, planning on replacing it with a SID XC soon, gonna build a single speed and put my Judy on it... :) I changed the flat bars out pretty quick, I am just a goober bar kinda guy, I went with the Bontranger Crow Bar Race, never had a problem with the others, just have a little more confidence on the down hills with these, plus with the geometry I was bent over just a little too much, so that helped me, and it didnt seem to affect the bikes performance much, was afraid it would mess me up in tight single track but it didnt.. I love the frame Geometry, (Long top tube and short chainstays are the way to go!!! Gary knows what hes doing) it takes a little while to get used to it but if you get the right size for your body it works out great, climbs good, down hills are great and tight single track is fairly good, of course it can only be as good as the rider... if I ever get another bike I will really look hard a Fisher again, but I dont plan on getting another one anytime soon, plan on riding this frame for quit a while... Im giving it a 4, I know I have just about changed everything that came on the bike, but overall the components did great and handled what ever I could throw at it for quit a while...

Bottom Line:I've waited a while to post a review for this bike because I wanted to get an accurate assessment of this bike, especially the Genesis effect. Well, I've ridden it all summer and it's for real -- the new geometry on this bike is so much more aggressive and responsive compared to my old Fisher Tassajara (good bike, just entry-level). It might not suit every rider, but for me, Genesis enables a higher confidence and ability to handle more difficult situations (especially up/down bigger hills), simply because of how/where I'm positioned on the bike. All the components on the bike are more than adequate for me (riding hard on intermediate-difficult trails 3-4 times a week, not racing yet), and the bike has handled everything i've thrown its way. Nothing but good experiences with my Fisher bikes, though. Cool looking, too. Definitely recommend this one cuz you can't go wrong for the price.

I too thought the Genesis stuff was hype, and maybe it still is, but it works for me. Man does my back love this bike. The only other bike that came close in terms of comfort was the GT Avalanche but the Big Sur was $200 less. I’m 6’ with a long torso relative to my legs and the Big Sur’s frame feels so good. Had the shop switch it to a longer stem. With that and the extenders I can really stretch out. It weighs a little more than I was shooting for (26½ lbs. stock, medium frame).I’ve ridden it about 20 hours in the last month. It climbs great, descends even better on Judy XCs. It doesn’t handle great in tight turns. No problems with the paint. LX front derailleur had to be adjusted after a couple of weeks but no problems with it otherwise. The comfort factor makes up for these minor shortcomings.I give it 4 chilis cuz only perfection gets 5. A great bike for the buck.

The Big Sur has got to be the best bike for the money ($1588 Canadian with Taxes and a Core Rat chain stay Pad). It was either this bike or a GT LTS 4000 and the Fisher won, BIG TIME. The Genisis Geomentry is the best I have ridden for Climbing, descending, and other miscilanios activities that are involved in biking. The Fork. The 1999 Judy XC Long Travle with 92mm of Travle IS THE BEST FOR FOR THE MONEY. You can buy the Hoo Koo Eee Koo with the Judy C but the Judy XC is a reason enough to buy the Big Sur. The XC(97mm) is almost comparable to the 100 (actualy 109mm) is over $100 U.S. more for a few mm! It is not worth the extra bucks. And the frame. The Frame on the Big Sur is the Same on the Procaliber! Harshly upgradable in other words!!!
Weaknesses:
The Judy is a bit on the noisy side of a fork but not nearly as noisy as a bomber the open bath system on the XC does make a bit of annoying nois but you usually cannot hear it because your going to fast and hearing other things. Whenever you hit a small bump and speed, the rear brake, and both dereailers' cables hit the frame of the bike making a high pitched ding that you can hear at speed. I sounds like it is coming from the fork but it isn't (my dealer assured me).
Similar Products Used:
My last bike (before stolen!!!!!!!!!!) was a GT Pantara 1997. This is a damn good bike, I realy like the geometry but it can't compare to the Genisis geomitry.
Bike Setup:
You can see my setup at www.fisherbikes.com check out the 1999 Big Sur. The only change I made is the Bar Ends. I like the 'L' shaped ones so I stuck some ones from my old Matterhorn on it (I broke the frame twice on the Matterhorn the Aluminum Big Sur and GT Pantara Frames KICK ANY CRO-MO frame any day of the year). The bar ends that I have now; both of my 'L' ones wiegh less then one of the Bontrager stock ones.
Bottom Line:THIS BIKE KICKS. YOU CAN RIP A TRAIL FAST AND SMOOOOOOOTHLY on this bike. Shimano LX cranks are a bit heavy but the whole bike stock wiehgs approx 25 lbs (gues I never actually wieghed the thing but that's what it feels like). THIS BIKE DESERVES AN AVERAGE RATING OF 5!!!!! Front wheel wonders minimally, will resolve it with the new seat post (Bontrager cometition, Race Face XY0 or similar with central clamp position). Riding feeling right, bike fast, Bontrager hubs spin with virtually no resistance. Descends fast and controllable, nervous tail due to Velociraptor tires, Rithey Z-Max would do better in my experience. Braking soft on the front wheel, will exchange for the Ritchey pads first if it would not help, please advice someone on better agresive brakeing component for the front. Great bike for the money. As usual with more investment in componentry it can be improved even further. The weight diffrence of medium frames is mere 0.3 lb for plain gauge tubes is neglectable & it absorbs stress better than butted one.

Bottom Line:This is review for the 1998 Model. It's the better value b/c it much cheaper than the 1999 and comes with the top-of-line alum frame.I got the XS b/c it was on super sale and I wanted more clearance. With SM, I got about 1-1.5 of clearance, now I have about 3. (My inseam w/shoes is 30.) I had to adjust the stem from 60mm->90mm and flipped it to get a -5 deg angle. The 1998 comes with 0 deg while the 1999 comes with 10 or 15 deg rise. I prefer the lower riding position. I'm a roadie converting over....I guess this part of the transistional stage.I had to get a longer seat post, the stock was a 270mm. Which will accomidate inseams up to about 28.5. They should of provided a longer seat post to start. With the above changes the bike is a perfect fit and rides aggressively as I like it. Some may say I have nullified some of the Genesis benefits with the longer stem, but I fell that the handling has actually improved. With a 60mm stem the bike was too responsive.Anyways the bike climbs great and the XT at the back is really great. I took it on the road yesterday and was able to push it to 72 kph (45 mph). At that point, I just wished it was geared higher ;-) (I think my roadie thinking is kicking in again)The Indy XC rides quite well, but is not very adjustable. As my off road skills improve I may switch over to a Bomber.Overall great bang for you buck at $550 from SuperGo.

Bottom Line:The geometry of this frame is the best I have EVER ridden, bar none. Made out of 6061 T6 as well! But on the Big Sur, it's all straight-guage. No gussetts, no tapering, no butting, no nothin', and that is probably part of the reason why the Big Sur is so inexpensive, even though it's made out of the more expensive aluminum normally found on much more expensive bikes. And that reduces the strength, durability, and quality of any aluminum bike. I was about to shell out the 900 bones to buy it until, at the last minute, I found out that the frame was so...so....basic. So I bought somethin else (a GT) where there was a little more work put into the tubing and frame. I do believe, however, that the more expensive higher-end Gary Fishers with Genesis geometry have butted 6061 aluminum tubing.
There's a lesson to be learned here: there's ALWAYS a catch.

The bikes are almost identical in the component dept but it was the frame on the Gary Fisher that made me spend the extra $100. I have been out several times since I bought it and just love it!!!! The bike turns on a dime and climbs hills like a mountain goat. The Judy XC forks are nice and smooth but with my weight being right at 180 I might have to look in to stiffer springs. Bottom Line:This bike is spec'd practically identically to the Trek 7000. First and foremost, the differenece between the two bikes is the geometry. While the Trek offers a more standard geometry, the Fisher features the Genesis geometry. This geometry changes the position of the rider on the bike setting him/her further back by extending the top tube and shortening the stem. This delivers a very awkward feeling the first few times riding it, I felt offbalance and disoriented. You feel really stretched out and back on the rear wheel. Aside from the initial awkwardness, it becomes apparent that this really does help improve the climbing on the bike, and once you have the bike long enough, I'm sure you'll get accustomed to the altered geometry. The 99 Judy XC hydracoil is very plush and comfy, soaking up small and big. Fisher surprisingly offers a 80mm travel version while most other OE Judy XC's are 63mm. If you like the Big Sur, it's worth a look at the Trek 7000, both are similarly spec'd. The only difference between the two should be which one fits you better and which one you feel more comfortable on?Overall it's a pretty good ride, takes some getting used to, but nice. Good construction and components combine to make this bike a pretty good deal. But be sure to take a look at the similarly spec'd Trek 7000 if the geometry for you is questionable.

So far its only chipping in one spot about the size of a dime, if it continues I will get my dealer to send it back and get repainted. I would give it a 5 if it wasnt for the chipping paint, plus Im still having problems getting the front D adjusted to where it doesnt rub the chain any.

Bottom Line:I just bought this bike this week and have only ridden it on the street. However not only does this bike ride better than any bike I've owned the value is incredible. Take it as you will but I looked through my catalogs and calculated the cost of all the componets if bought seperately and without the frame it added up to $1200. You add the frame in and you have an absoltely incredible value. You just can't beat this bike for the price, componets and performance

Strengths:
Sweet Black and White color, nice shifters, responsive brakes, great climbing, awesome price.
Weaknesses:
You may experience sever cases of the fisher effect. Refer to the '99 fisher catalog for the best remedy for this illness.
Bike Setup:
LX front der, Bontrager race plus 10 seat, (red) Maveric wheels, (red) Icon Soulmate pedals.
Bottom Line:This bike is an amazing purchase, I find myself making time daily to go down to our BMX track and show 'em all how to jump in style with speed (the clipless pedals help on bunny hops for sure!!!). Gimme a hill, any hill!!! I'll mutelate it. This bike can climb up your wall, and hit 47 mph goin down a hill, EASY. 9 speed is great, now I leave my friends in the dust. Don't worry about the paint, if it chips your dealer should cover it (at least mine will), but mine hasnt't so far. I would highly reccomend this bike to anyone who likes to get out, smeel the fresh air, feel the breeze go by thier face, and have tears coming out of your eyes because your going so fast! Great bike, and GO FISHER!!!!

(1) Climbs incredibly well!!!(2) Great bang for the buck!!!
Weaknesses:
None so far. Although, the seat post is somewhat cheesy, but big deal...
Similar Products Used:
(1) Specialized Stumpjumper(2) A variety of GT's (yuk...)
(3) A variety of others (Jamis, Cannonsnail...)
Bottom Line:I did quite a bit of research before purchasing a new bike. I feel no other manufacturer comes close to producing such an innovative bike for the price you pay. I was amazed how well this thing really climbs!!! I'll eventually upgrade to XTR derailluers, however, for the money, it can't be touched unless you steal one... By the way, this x fella', whom just posted a review, obviously never rode this bike. What a putz, posting a review without actually doing his homework. You provide no value pal for those whom really want to research a MTB, bonehead....

Bottom Line:I've been riding for about four years and, except for the past month, its all been NO SUSPENSION. What a difference, the clipless pedals are an awesome touch as well. Bike climbs very well. Takes the down hill very quickly. Ride three times a week, no complaints yet. Worried about the paint after reading all of the reviews, but needless to say, Gary rocks.

PRICE!!!
Judy xc, lx-xt mix, killer acid green paint (bike turns heads!)
Weaknesses:
If any it would have to be the front D, and the biggest gripe I have with it is that I cant seem to get it adjusted right..always at some point either on the smallest or biggest ring it will rub some when pedaling hard. (I seem to think this has something to do with the fact that its a 9 speed and theres just so much flex in the chain when on the biggest or smallest ring on the rear cassette.

Trek 7000, DBR ZETEC Comp, and Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo
Bottom Line:I love this bike, my old bike was a Diamond back sorrento sport, whatta change...I feel like Im actually riding a real bike now...It was a tough decision between the trek, DBR and fisher's...they are all priced really close and have almost the same components, but I really liked the geometry of the fisher, I loved the fact that the DBR had a suspension post but didnt like the fact that it only had a judy c instead of the xc, so after several weeks of thought I chose the big sur, and so far I dont think that I made a bad decision, the Judy seems to tackle just about whatever I throw at it, and tackles it quite smoothly I might add, A few of my buddies ride Manitou and I really thought I wanted a Manitou suspension over a Rock Shox, the Manitou seems to be firmer and has dampening control, the Judy seemed a bit mushey to me at first, I was afraid it would bob up and down to much when pedaling aggressivley, but to my suprise the judy is really stabile when pedaling hard. I also love the geometry of the bike, it really seems to climb well, you can actually stand and get your weight up front and the back wheel still bits very well, and it also handles D/H very well, overall the bike handles extremely well and is about the biggest bank for the buck you can find...Im a little worried about everybody talking about the paint peeling, I am going to keep my eye on that...

Similar Products Used:
gt karakoram, fischer kai tai, stumpjumper comp & pro, trek 8000
Bike Setup:
stock '99
Bottom Line:this is the only bike i tested recently that didn't seem to have a personality of its own. (no offense meant to those who love this bike). the genesis geometry is a huge improvement over the '96 models (hookooeekoo & kai tai). it seems fast and pretty responsive, but it doesn't scream AGGRESSIVE. the parts packages fischer puts together probably can't be beaten for the money. they NEVER skimp when they shouldn't. much nicer ride than the kai tai. the kai tai seems very upright and non-responsive, but the big sur is nice, pretty light, and a GREAT VALUE.

Climbing ability

Tight Switchbacks

Bottom Line:The genesis geometry definately has a different feel. I can climb out of the saddle with
quite a bit of weight on the front and the back wheel never losses traction, but it allows me to create more torgue and RPM = speed. It is a little longer than most bikes, so tight switchbacks are difficult but I will adjust. The Judy eats up bumps big and small.
Good component group. I can ride this bike really fast. Now where do I get a pair of velvet pants and a silly hat.

Bottom Line:There is not a bike under $1500 that rides like this. You could get a higher model, but even then the components are not that much better. Spend less money and get the Big Sur then in time upgrade to XT or XTR and put a better fork on it. The 98 is a better buy than the 99 because it uses the pro frame and you can get it for $100 less! The components on the 99 are only one step better and eventually you will want either XT or XTR anyways, go for the frame and build it up. I couldn't find any bike that handled like this one and it does climb like a jet. The balance is perfect. Again, look for the 98 and get the easton frame!!! You can build this up to what the Pros are racing - you can't do that with the 99.
