Bottom Line I chose this bike because of the 1 1/2 years I have been riding my Rig SS. That bike has such incredible handling I fell in love with it the first time on the trails. So when it came time to look for a geared 29er picking the Paragon was easy since the geometry is almost identicle to the Rig. I have not been disapointed. I am a 180lbs rider and ride aggressive cross country and have had no frame problems with either GF bike. I questioned my LBS who is a friend of mine and he stated he has not had a single GF frame failure. So I bought it with confidence. I just won a 12 hour race on it and easily bested my lap times from a year ago. The bike is fast, fairly light for a $2000 29er and just flows through the trails. I would recomend this bike.

I love the 29er ride - especially on flowing Indiana singletrack, but in the 3 years since I've bought this bike Gary Fisher has failed to correct the weakness in the frame. I've had 3 frames crack at the seatpost - including a new 2009 model. I love the way the bike handles and flows around corners. I love the big wheels when climbing, but I know its just a matter of time until the frame cracks again. Fisher has honored the warranty, although the process is somewhat frustrating. At this point, I don't trust the quality of any Gary Fisher frame.

at the LBS i was told i'm not the first owner with the same misfortune. since i bought the bike second hand the "lifetime warranty" expired. bought a Niner MCR instead.

I won't leave a review unless I've REALLY tested something. The Schwinn lasted a couple hundred miles. The Trek 4300 lasted 800 miles. This 2007 Gary Fisher Paragon has gone 2500 miles and shows no signs of quitting. And I weigh 270 lbs!! I think the frame crack problem with earlier models has been fixed. fyi I ride 75% street, 25% dirt. Geometry is excellent for taller/bigger riders. It's great on the trails and on the street. Adjustable, lock-out Reba Race fork is awesome! You can run regular 700c road tires if you need to (I did two 50-mile Rosarito-Ensenada rides on this bike). List price was $1800. I negotiated $1700 and no sales tax. I don't think there's a better 29er for the money.

I'm 6'1 and feel way more comfortable on the 29er vs my 26. Although I still enjoy taking out my S-works for the quick acceleration and climbing. But at the end of the day, I'm much faster on the Paragon 29er.
It carrys a lot of speed and downhill handling is exceptional. It can get a little tight in some single track, but once you learn how to manuver through the tights with a 29er, it's not a problem.
My only real complaint is after a 20 mile race, I feel a little more beat up than what I think I should. So I'm buying the full carbon version....The SUPERFLY!!!. Hoping the carbon will take the edge off and soak up more vibration than it's aluminum sister.

Following the purchase of a Gary Fisher Rig single-speed I knew I had to throw down for a geared 29er. Out of the gate, this bike rides like a true 29er should. When riding a 29er, you'll find that you sit inside the bike instead of on top of it, unlike a 26-inch ride. 29ers are super comfortable when you make yourself at home sitting on the saddle spinning up smooth So Cal single-track. Replacing the stock stem and bars with longer and wider versions made a big difference, in my opinion. The Fox fork works flawless. The lockout works well when riding the pavement to the trail heads. The blowout valve works well, too. I found out the hard way. SRAM X-9 shifters and chain chuckers have performed better than I had expected. My Specialized Epic 26er has XO chuckers, which just look cooler, really. Once you get the 29 inch wheels up to speed, the bike rolls so smooth and efficiently. I find that I can climb technical sections on this bike that my 26er would require more body english to clear. The bike is so forgiving on the descents, it's ridiculous. For a hardtail, it's amazing what an extra 3 inches can do to a bikes overall performance. I can't say anything negative about this bike after 250 miles ridden. This is the least expensive bike I've bought in over ten years and by far the most fun to ride. It's hard to go back to 26 inch bikes after being bit by the 29er bug. I'm hooked!

This bike sucked. I sold mine after 3 months because the geometry gave me lower back pain. I have used all kinds of mountain bikes and never had pain after riding like I had with this bike.
In addition, the rims developed a terrible clicking noise at the seam after about 2 weeks of light use. These were replaced under warranty.
The components on this bike were excellent, and it shifted extremely smoothly.
If you can try tis bike for a couple of hours before buying and it works for you, great. It didn't work for me and was an extremely frustrating experience.

2008 Model.This bike rocks. It's smooth, it's super-fast, it's light. The X-9 drivetrain shifts like a dream. Juicy 5's seem to be working like you'd want your brakes to work. Cool baby blue color. Got the very last one in Fisher's inventory. If you see this bike available, snap it up. 2009 model had the same build for $500 more.

FRAME - After riding mine for less than six months the frame cracked at the top of the seat post. Really pissed me off. I didn't buy the 2007 Paragon because the old frames broke like this. The 2008 was redesigned to prevent this. Obviously it didn't work. They are replacing the frame. If it breaks again I am just going to bike the bullet and buy a Ventana El Padrino 29er frame. My other bike is a Ventana Pantera and the quality of their products is unmatched.

This is my first bike purchase in almost 10 years. My previous bike a 1999 Paragon all decked out with the lastest and greatest weighing only 22 LBS. I changed to this new 29er because the 99 did not accept IS Mount Brakes. I have always been fond of the 29er concept but did not want to run out and buy one becaues the technology would get better. Just look at Full Suspession bike since 1997 compared to today. OK I was on my way to purchase an Orbea Lanza 26in frame. When I got to the bike shop and started talking to the rep he showed me a few other bikes. I was intrested in a 29er and he rolled the paragon out. I though Juicy 5, Fox, Sram X-9 cool blue color OK not bad. I ended up leaving with the bike and deceided to leave the 1999 Paragon as a single speed.
My first ride on this bike was not a good feeling. I think because the bigger wheels and less acceleration for the tight single track I was riding on along with some added weight 26 LBS compared to 22 LBS concernd me. I did notice right away that the bike was extrmeely fast on downhill section and noticed my self using my brakes. My legs were tired very fast and the bike fatigue me much faster than my 26. I did not like how the bike handled, Climbed or anything else.
My second ride I felt a little more comfortble with the bike and changed my riding style and technique. I noticed that by leaning more in the corners the bike would carry momentum and would track better. I also dialed in my tire pressure and had the FOX set up for my weight. The brakes were also breaking in and the bearings were more broken in on the crank and wheels. The bike just seemed a little smoother than the first ride. Also used a higher gear on the slower twisty single track. I had to get out the mentality that this is not a 26 in bike. Monster trucks use higher gear ratios to keep that acceleration. So instead I went a cog or two higher and just keep my foot speed up. This was much less taxing on my legs. I will admit that at lower speeds its a bid harder to keep a good line. I think this is more of a problem with the rider and not the bike. The G2 geometry places the hubs of the wheel in the same place as the 26 in frame.
Ride 3. I was hitting corners harder than ever and was rolling by my friends in tight single track in the turns. I was also exiting the turning with minimal peddaling and still have more momentum than my friends who were cranking out of the turns. The bike can clear almost an log piles and drops. This bike also becomes air bonrne very easy for an XC Bike. I am going to put a stans no tube kit to increase rolling.
If you are looking for a solid bike with good components and your not a weight weeny than buy this bike. The seat post problem has been fixed with the new tubing design.

After 4 months of racing in WI, the frame decides to fail at the seat tube and top tube junction. This is ridiculous, they only build frames that last 4 months and then they get to replace it. I have had a Scalpel that has lasted for 2 years of racing (now I have to use it again) and I wanted to try the 29er thing so I went with a GF because of the shop I race for. Well I won't be getting another new Trek product because of the disposable nature of the company.

Geometry! I'm very comfortable on this bike. No back pain during long rides which I've had issues with on other bikes. The bike feels light and nimble for a 29er. The bike handles very well, but the front wheel will tend to push in fast flat corners if I don't shift my weight forward enough. I love the SRAM shifters.
Weaknesses:
At 700 hard miles I've had the following wear issues. I consider this normal wear and tear but others may not.
- A bottom bracket bearing failure...$30 to repair
- ChainWheels and cassette wore out. These OEM components are a ways from top of the line and I think they held up well for the abuse and bad shifts that I've put them through.
Bike Setup:
Stock other than tires. I also put organic pads on the rear...the stock pads were a little noisy.

A great fast bike that can take some abuse!

This is my first 29er, I wanted a full suspension this is a hardtail but no regrets. Bike is light, responsive, and fast. I have taken the spacer out from the fox shox to convert to 100mm and the down hill has improved, I know lean back and point and shoot.It rides over obsticles very easily, the trick is keep your speed up( to slow you will loose your balance)and you'll role over must stuff.It is a Gary Fisher that could be good or bad news to some, but I feel he leads the way in 29er technology and he is very passionate about 29ers.DO not forget the lifetime warranty on the frame.

This review is more of a first impression as I just got it and only have a few hours ride time on it. I can't comment on durability but I think I can give a good review on the handling and ride characteristics. As for me: I'm 6'1", 175lbs and a solid sport XC rider with many years experience. My other rides are a Nomad, full rigid 29'er single speed and road bikes. I'm pretty aggressive on the downhill and do some jumping on the Nomad. I'm not really going to get into 26 vs 29 except to say that if you are under 5'9" there is really no point to 29'er and that yes, they really do go over rocks and bumps better (don't go crazy though as once you get to true rockgardens a FS bike with 26 like my Nomad is going to smoke a 29'er).
I was riding my GT Peace 9r (full rigid) but my knees have been killing me so I wanted something to replace it that I could do some wednesday night races on when I'm up in the Bay Area. I did a ton of research and for the money, the Paragon can't be beat. All the other 29'ers at this price point have a much lower spec and weigh 1-2 pounds more. Plus, I'm not a big fan or Rock Shox so the Fox fork was a big plus. I called at least 50 Fisher dealers until I found someone that had a Paragon, I guess they are going to release the next model in August so they have let the inventory lines dry up. If you want one you'll probably be waiting.
I have to admit that the Fisher is the first "Big Company" bike I have owned since my '89 Trek 950. I've stayed loyal to smaller companies like Klein (back in the early 90's), Santa Cruz (starting with a '96 Heckler), Ellsworth, Intense and Kish Custom so I was a bit hesitant about going with a mass produced Trek...er, I mean Fisher...We'll see about durability.
Ok, so my first impression is that I'm surprised how light it is and how fast it handles. My 19 inch is 25.9 lbs completely stock with my time Carbon pedals. I was very surprised to see that and checked 3 times. The quickest way to drop some weight is to replace the seat and post, you could probably loose 1/2 a pound there. The back hub is also pretty heavy. Other than that, everything is fairly light. I'm not a weight weenie and find durability more important than ultra light weight (it's pretty rocky around here) so I'll just replace stuff as it breaks.
The front end is very light and extremely nimble. I'm actually kind of surprised and just how fast Fisher's G2 geometry makes this bike, it reminds me of my old Klein race bikes from the mid-90's! You lean this bike over and it rails through the corners like a good xc bike should. At speed when you hit some ruts it can get a little sketchy so that might not appeal to everyone. Riding the fast single track of Fort Ord (near the trails where Sea Otter is held) I had a great time and really pushed the bike through some tight corners. I had just ridden the same trails a couple days before on my Nomad (yeah, WAY too much bike for that) and found that I had to be a bit more picky about my lines but overall was a bit faster because I really could push it on the flats and anywhere the trail starts rolling. Climbs obviously were much faster on the Paragon. A couple times I actually turned the bike a bit too quickly and cut off the apex, this is not something you normally have a problem with 29'ers! I never felt like I was on top of the bike but I did find that my weight was biased to the rear a bit. Overall, I'd say the handling is bordering on "twitchy" but I thought it was a ton of fun. Personally, I have the Nomad if I want to do bombing runs or ride my normal rocky trails and would rather have a 29'er that is super nimble than another big bike. Riding the off-camber trails around my house with a couple very steep sections and some berms and rollers has confirmed what I saw on the trails in Monterey.
Climbing is quite impressive. Sitting down it grips really well and accelerates nicely. I think this is due to the fairly light Bontrager rims and tires that come stock. Note: I personally do not like the tires that come with it as they seem better suited for a trail with moisture not the super dry sandy and rocky terrain we have. On the trails around my house with more leaves and organic material they do much better. Flip the lockout on the fox and this bike screams uphill when standing. I do find you have to carefully weight the rear tire but I attribute this more to the tire than I did to the bike.
Side notes: I LOVE this bar. It's a 12 degree sweep flat bar that is SUPER comfortable for me. I run Easton bars on my other bikes with 8 degrees of sweep and was a bit hesitant about going to 12 but I really like it. Also, I haven't run SRAM components in a few seasons but I have to say that this x-9 is a HUGE improvement over the x-9/x0 I had 3 seasons ago. Shifts are very quick and the feel is very positive, even under loads. There is a weird feeling in the second smallest rear cog, I need to figure out what that's all about. The seat is very comfortable, just heavy. The grips are too small for my hands, they feel like a rougue grip so I'll be replacing those. The stem is a bit too flexible for my taste too.
Bottom line: this is a great XC bike, 26 or 29. The big wheels make up for the lack of suspension and the handling is fantastic (for my taste). If you already have a trail or AM bike and need something for the 50 milers or for racing this is the perfect bike. After riding this bike I'm shocked I was able to ride my Nomad 55 miles with 9k feet of climbing and hang (barely) with my buddies on their XC bikes. With this bike I ought to be right at the front and feeling fresh at the end of the ride. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be running the Nomad it's just that I now I have a better tool for Nor Cal single track and for the epics.
5 stars on the value because of the FOX and mostly X-9 parts plus the light weight
5 stars overall...but I wish there were a 4 1/2 because the handling won't appeal to people who haven't ridden a true XC bike and because, though the weight is good, it's not a 22lb carbon bike so I have to leave room for improvement there. For the price, it's a 5 star bike.

I don't even realize that it is a 29er. The bike handles the tight twisties, climbs and fast decents like it is a much smaller bike. The bike doesn't seem to flex when I pull a taller gear in the single track. It just rockets in whatever direction you point it. I absolutely love this bike. I have heard that the older bikes are not as good as the 08 G2 frame. All I can say is that they really nailed it on this one...

This frame is really stiff. Im little heave and I have a right to say these words I think. Frame construction with hydroforming is excellent use of present technology possibilities.
Weaknesses:
little poor equipement as for best model of product line with alu frame. big sweep gives good controle but I think it is not a racing bar. I noticed too comfortable position :P like for sunday trails... Tires makes that you fell you are sticked to the ground. I mean that these tires are not too fast...

When I rode a 29" wheels first time I knew that I must have this bike. I falled in love with this size this speed and this magic of 29er riding. I was make a big effort to import it to Poland but I still was sure that I would not be dissapointed. *here this bike cost is 3300$ !!! at distributors shop !!!) Because I collected some parts last year I put all of them immediately on the bike. Unfortunatelly Avids rotors are not a good solution for XTR brakes at all! so Im going to buy a Aligator rotors. Because Im strong 44 teeths on LX crankset was not satisfying too. I spent a lot of time on XTR 952 and it is a king of all X contry and race competitions (especially when you go downhill) I made some CNC modifications to cranks arms and now this set with BB is 870g ! what is a weight of a new XTR with same stiffness.
Really impresive is frame stiffnes. I used to riding an Author frame (czech republic manufacturer)and Paragon is a realy huge change ! Fox fork is nice item too :D I changed a travel to 100mm on the beginning. it is not a RLC but I must say again. I cant complain too much for this cash ! :D
I tested a Sram shifters and deraileurs and I have no complains too but It depends what you like. I like shimano.
Weight of this bike before and after setup is excellent for this price too. Its really light! unfortunatelly I cant measure exactly how light is it.
Im still collecting money for Industry 9 wheelset as a last suplement to the bike of my dreams. Although this wheelset for a not a high expectations is OK but still little heavy.
tires are not to fast but its not a problem. you can always change it.
I love this bike for a frame colour, genesis geometry and new special fox offset and I strongly recommend it to everyone who think about beginner racing purposes as same as for sb who is looking for good looking and comfortable bike for all conditions.

Bottom Line:
This is for the 2007 model. First 40 miles on this bike were blacktop and fire roads.I was liking my new ride but honestly didn't see what all the 29er excitement was all about. Rode some singletrack with it for the first time today. This trail is an out and back loop. Going out, its a climb for about 1.5 miles. Coming back its all downhill. There are alot of rollers and a fair amount of roots. All I can say is now I get it. I was able to climb with confidence, the bike went where I wanted it to, and I absolutely FLEW coming back down. Very happy with purchase.

Bottom Line:
A fast, fun XC rocket. At speed it flattens roots, rocks and babyheads with ease. The Stan's tubeless setup did wonders for the 29er's overall "snap". Vastly improved acceleration and climbing characteristics. The low rotational weight, low PSI tubeless setup helps to get the niner up to speed quickly. This is important as 29ers can be sluggish generating momentum and tend to handle awkwardly in tight terrain at low speed. Also, the low profile tread Stan's Crow tires reduce rolling resistance in a major way. Once the wheels are spinning, the bike tears up medium to fast singletrack and really bombs the downhills. Not the fastest bike climbing the hill or on ultra tight trails but pretty much great everywhere else.

FRAME HAD A EXTRA LONG SEAT TUBE THAT CAUSED IT TO FAIL AND CRACK. EVEN THE STOCK SEATPOST WAS TOO SHORT TO FIT THIS PISS POOR FRAME. THE TIRES THAT CAME ON IT WERE TOO WIDE TO CLEAR THE CHAINSTAYS. DID THEY RESEARCH THIS AT ALL? HAD TO BUY NEW TIRES WHEN I FIRST GOT THE BIKE. POOR FRAME DESIGN AND I KNOW OF THREE OTHER PEOPLE IN MY AREA WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. FISHER WOULD NOT WARRANTY MY FRAME SINCE THE SHOP I BOUGHT FROM WENT OUT OF BUSINESS. GAVE ME THE RUN AROUND. TOOK TO RECYCLING CENTER AND GOT $3.00, WHICH IS WAY MORE THAN WHAT IT'S WORTH.

They rely on the known name to sell bikes and lack in the customer service and don't stand behind their product. Heck, what is one unsatisfied customer to a corp like TREK?
Bike Setup:
Initially took off the stock Bontrager crap and replaced with King, Thomson, Easton and Race Face. Stock Bontrager cranks also failed when I was 20 miles from my car. Had to use one leg to spin back. Replaced that hunk of junk with a XT. Should have went custom from the get go. What a waste of $1400!!!! I should have went to Vegas or a week long bender instead.
Bottom Line:
Don't buy one if you ride more than a weekend warrior. Wasn't even my primary bike and the POS still failed. Crack started as a small fracture where the seat tube meets the top tube and totally failed during a ride. You would think they would have been more accomodating to someone who risked a severe injury by riding this piece of crap. Every shop I tried to get warrantied through tried selling me a new Fisher instead. Disposable bikes??? Trek customer service sucks. I bucked up to a Niner and have been happy and put way more miles on the scandium framed Niner than the Paragon. BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY EVER!!! I wish I could give negative chilli fo this so called bike.

Weaknesses:
Stock Avid pads (read my review in Juicy 5 section and how I fixed them). Bead on front Bontrager Jones tire too loose, could not convert tubeless like the rear.

Bottom Line:
If you're sitting on the fence on 29'ers like I was, just buy it. I've been having a blast and did not regret it. I have 4 other complete bikes in my stable, all different disciplines, and was looking for a cross country bike again. It doesn't replace suspension, but maintains momentum and motors right thru the rough stuff. On smooth climbs it lags behind 26'rs,and on extremely tight, off camber downhill hairpin switchbacks it wants to swap the bars (I don't know if this a 29'er quirk or genesis geometry), but on flat ground like a turbo it somehow manages to accelerate without trying, like you're being pushed. Coasting downhill the bike magically leaves them all behind, you must experience it to believe it. I'm 5'9" 185ish and the medium 17.5" feels extremely comfortable, no toe overlap issues. It's not a hucking bike, and it may be a little heavier than weight weenie racers want, but as an everyday rip up the singletrack trailbike, it rides right alongside 5" bikes, sometimes faster. I find myself tearing up singletrack faster than ever before, and after a typical 3 or 4 hour ride, my back is not sore, even for a hardtail. It's few negatives are minor compared to its pluses. I highly recommend trying one.

I seriously upgraded this beast before I even turned a wheel to get it under 24 lbs. Mission accomplished(23.4). You have to run tubeless, narrow, and low psi to really get the full 29 ride. Stan's Crow tubelss tires are light and fast at 30 psi. 30 psi on a 29 feels harder than it does on a 26. Don't know why.
Bottom Line:
Upgrade your 29 with light, narrow, tubless tires and wheels and you'll being laughing throughout the entire ride. Also, getting disk cross wheels with 700c road tires is a must for some nice road riding. I race in a super face catagory with lots of former pros. This year half are on 29's as last year there was exactly zero. It's here to stay. sweeet

I demo'ed the bike at Chequamegon this year. I went and rode the Ojibwa trail behind the finish and fell in love with this bike. It feels like you have a FS but are on a hard tail. The big tires take the "sting" out of the trail that you feel with a 26" HT. This thing feels like it can roll forever. I actually had to use the brakes on this bike to make corners that on my Scalpel I could coast through. This thing climbs like a mountain goat too. I can stand up and not have to worry so much about body placement to prevent wheel spin.

Fits me just right. I'm just under 6'3" and the 19.5/49cm frame fits like a glove. Very responsive and tracks well in all conditions.
Weaknesses:
Avid jucy 5 disc brakes. They vibrate if you don't take them apart and clean the post every other ride. I have coated the washers with a very small amount of greese and it has worked so far. I have 4 rides like this and no vibration yet, maybe I'm on to something. Ihave read about this problem before.

Even with a 72 1/2 degree headtube angle this bike is no slug around the single track. I will use this bike next season in many 12 and 24 hour events as well as a hand full of XC races. The big hoops really do make a differance when you hit rock gardens and large gaps in the trail. I love this bike and I don't think I will ever go back to a 26" bike again. You should buy this bike if you are a taller rider and want something that fits as close to a custome as you can get.

This thing feels like my YZ450F Motocross bike.I have been riding MTB since I got my first Stingray and this thing hands down is the most stable bike I have ever been on.No longer do I go over the bars every time I stick the front wheel in a hole.I am not sure how these guys are breaking frames as I abuse my bike on a regular basis.I have broken frames on Cannondale's,Haro MX3's but never my Fishers.This is the ultimate bike for my 6'1" 230lb frame.I Ride Motocross,Cross Country,Trials on Motorcycles and this is the first bike I have ever ridden that feels as stable as an MX Bike.This includes full on DH Rides.

Yes ,The wave rotors do shutter and squalk from time to time.Do the same thing we do on MX bikes,Spray them down with Contact cleaner and wipe them down with a clean rag from time to time and it goes away.

I too cracked the seat tube after 1 season. I had a crank failure at the BB, had crank and BB replaced, had identical failure a 2nd time, replaced with shimano bb/crank, all good now. The stock cassette weighs over a pound! Bontrager tread is worthless on dirt (good for rocky)

I rode the first ride of the bike today 7.5 miles of rolling hills and the bike climbed like a champ. I don't recall climbing on the other 26er's as easy. My neighbor has been riding for the past 6 month's and I accelerated past him up the climbs. Granted I don't have my climbing legs yet but another few rides like today and they will be back. The bike decends like no other, I had more confidence today on the 29er than my previous 26er's. The Reba Race is an awesome fork. I went over and over for the past few months between a HD and a FS bike and made the right choice.

Great geometry for a tall rider. I'm 6'6 and weigh 220lbs. 29" wheels are the only way to go for tall people. Nice components for the price.
Weaknesses:
The frame cracked on the seat tube after only six months of riding. Frame was replaced, but definitely an inconvenience.

GF Quality is so suspect. I'll never buy another GF. This is my 4th failure experience with GF stuff (3 breaks on GF Sugar, 1 Trek Fuel) and now a cracked Paragon.
I'm sure they'll replace - as it cracked where everyone else's has but being without a ride is terrible. I was loving it until then. Now I'm not sure I want to get back on it - what if it cracks at speed etc. Totally Sour on GF bikes!
You'd think a bike that cost close to $2000 would last longer than 3 months.

GF warranty. Solid secure feel. Very dependable ride since frame replacement in Apr. '06 Climbs and desends well. Handling at speed on tight ST takes some getting used to. Nice parts, good value for the $$.
Weaknesses:
Early '06 models were breaking seat tubes. Mine included. GF sent redesigned replacement frame in 8 days. That's a strength. Avid Juicy 7 stop well but can be noisey at times.

Bottom Line:
I'm 5' 6" and the small (15.5") fits very nicely. I could use a little more standover height but the cockpit fit is perfect with the adjustments to the stem and handlebars. I reversed the stem and put a CF flat bar on it. It is now more comfortable than my 1999 Paragon was.
This 29'er is great for my height. It handles everything well, including tight singletrack and slow climbing. As expected the slight wheel weight difference is just noticeable when accelarating quickly on a climb. If the accelaration is slow, I don't notice it.
If I had to buy again, it would be between the Paragon and the Supercaliber 29.

Bottom Line:
This is a great bike. It flat hauls ass on open ground. Those big wheels provide for great hight speed stability. Killer long distance machine too. A little on the large size for tight single track but I use my other (26") bike for that. Riding pavement with the skinny tires I keep up with the spandex warriors on their road machines except I don't stop when the pavement ends.

2007 switched to Avid Juicy 5's instead of the Juicy 7's on the 2006 but I don't really care b/c compared to rim brakes these hydros are like night and day.

This review is for the 2007 Paragon. Great bike. I'm 5'10"/170. I was in the market for a good all-around bike for no more than about $1800 that had potential to be speedy enough for the occasional XC race but was reasonably comfy as well. I tested the legendary Stumpjumper hardtail and it fit like a glove but I wanted something different; also I heard the huge 29" wheels roll really well and are a nice alternative to short-travel rear suspension. They were right. I have no regrets. These wheels smooth out the choppy stuff and have the ability to clear large objects with relative ease due to simply being taller/decrease angle of attack. Almost makes riding 26" wheels feel like riding on shopping cart wheels (gross exageration ;) I can climb steps around town pretty easily whereas it was quite challenging/nearly impossible on a hardtail "26er". I believe/hope 29ers are here to stay.
This bike has great versatility too. You can slap 700c tires on the wheels (or, even better, have a spare set of 29" disc wheels w/ 700c's already mounted) and have a speedy bike for the pavement. (Who needs a Cannondale Bad Boy when you own a Paragon?) Also with the right component spec you could have a reeeeeal nice XC racer.
The headtube angle is 71.5 degrees, about the same as GF's "race" line, but the bigger wheel up front gives the bike much more slack rake/trail characteristics and thus feels less twitchy I suppose. Even so, the Paragon feels pretty light and flickable and I really don't feel like maneuverability has been compromised at all.
My minor gripe is that I'd prefer a little more standover height. Even though I'm only 5'10" (that may be a little generous) the size L frame definitely fit better than the Med. I think my arms are pretty long for my height. On the Med I felt like I was way too close to the front wheel, there was too much weight on my hands and I just didn't feel secure on the bike. The Med has almost an inch more standover but it just wasn't the right fit overall. I find the L to be very comfortable.
Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase. The Paragon is a great all-around, versatile, pretty-light mountain bike that does what a mountain bike should do...get you out on the trails, put a smile on your face and keep you rollin!
Buy it if: You're a XC rider looking for something different; someone interested in simplicity, ease of use, reasonable weight, and versatility. Your riding style/terrain doesn't call for long travel.
Don't buy it if: Probably if you're under 5'9" - you may find the wheels to be too big. You prefer a plush longer-travel bike or ride on terrain that favors longer-travel bikes.

great bike overall. fits me well at 6 ft, 215lbs. great on climbs. very stable on downhills, too. many 26ers have stated that 29ers are not great in tight technical singletrack. i haven't found that yet. i have learned to adjust when in those situations. they are a bit slower from the start, but once those larger wheels get going, they roll!!
only real complaints so far is the front brake does shutter and squeal a bit when wet, but i have heard worse from others with hayes. the stock Bontager, Jones tires don't hold up well at all. within 2 weeks of intermediate rides, both tires have tears on their sidewalls. just bought a set of kenda klaws, will report back later on those. and not the largest selection or 29er products on the market.
all in all, this bike performs great. i agree with most that this is probably not the bike for smaller riders, but 29er's definitely have their place.
will report back on this machine after a few months and a few races.

I bought the bike and stripped everything except the frame, fork, wheels and brakes. Built up with XTR, X0 and Bontrager Race XXX Light carbon. Frame is an XL and the bike is 25.5lbs. I am 6'2" 218lbs.
Bottom Line:
This bike fits. It has a long top tube and the Genesis geometry rocks. If you have never felt at home on a 26" bike, this is your bike. It is the best fitting bike I have ever owned/ridden. Climbs well and is really smooth on the twisty stuff. I have not had a chance to really pound on it yet, but it has passed every test so far. I am extremely happy with how this bike handles. The combination of hard tail and 29er wheels is the perfect balance of firmness and comfort.

Climbs great, decends great, and overall well balanced bike. Fisher pegged it with the Genesis frames, no doubt about it. Going to try some different tires this season, not that the stock ones are bad, just want something to compare them to. If I was to recommend a 29er to anyone this is it.

Great bike for the money. I got mine before they were officially out as Fisher shipped one to the shop by accident (I was told). Thus I got the old model price, which was a bit lower than the '06 model price.
Only complaints are that the stock tires leave something to be desired, and there really aren't many 29er tires yet. And the front brake rotor on the Juicy 7s squeels like crazy when even a little wet. When dry, it shutters some. I've read other reviews saying it is due to the wavy rotor, but I've yet to put a new rotor on. Still much better than rim brakes.
When climbing, I find I feel like I'm going to tip over backwards, so I climb steep stuff standing up. I'm sure this isnt the best way, but the feeling may be due to my posture and not the bike's fault.
I'm 6' 3", 200lb, and ride the XL frame. Fits me great, had it fitted at the shop and got an offset seatpost to help my posture out. Not sure I'd recommend 29ers for short people, I've seen that the wheels can interfere with shoes on the small frames. No issues at all on the XL frame though. And plenty of stand over hight.
I really like the Sram shifters. Took a few rides to get used to them, but now I love them. Much better than regular triggers, and I don't accidentally shift like with grip shifters. Brakes are awesome other than mentions above. Components seem top of the line except for the tires.
Great bike. And I'm really glad I didn't go full suspension. The 29er makes the ride a little smoother, but full suspension just isn't needed around western NY. Worth the money, I'd do it again.

I wrote my initial review of this bike on July 25, 2005, in the Hard-Tails section of MTBR. I love this bike... I use it on the dirt singletrack wooded trails in NJ and have taken it with me to Moab, Utah to ride. It is fast. It is comfortable. I am tall rider at 6'4" 230lbs and this bike fits like a glove. I purchased road tires (700c X 23) and use them on the bike as well. I have reached 29mph on flat blacktop streets with these tires. A speed I could never reach with 26" wheels. I love that I have the option to swap these large 29" tires to meet my riding needs. This bike simply offers great versatility. I plan to purchase cyclocross tires so that I can get the best of both riding worlds (road speed and offroad traction).
If you are "on the fence" about purchasing a 29" Mt. Bike, I highly recommend this machine. It will meet and exceed all your expectations. The Rockshox forks are plush and tuneable, the Avid Juicy7 brakes are sweet, the frame geometry seats me perfectly in the saddle (back and lower instead of high and over the handlebars (as with my 26" bikes)), and the speed at which you get from here to there is terrific! I love and believe in this bike so much that I would be willing to be a salesman for Gary Fisher to sell this product! This bike has made Mt. Biking a new and interesting sport to me. Owning this bike is like having an SUV vehicle in that it will be as comfortable on the road as off and handle any weather condition that is thrown at you.
