$170.00 | | Purchased At: | cambriabike.com | | Strengths: | Its a coil and at 750 lbs on a 2.2 throw its plenty for my 200 lbs body and 32 lb trail bike | | Weaknesses: | Too early to tell, all works well but will post follow up in a few months of abuse | | Similar Products Used: | '02 vanilla-r lasted 2000 miles and trouble free but spring went limp over time, '01 float has 1200 and also trouble free. | | Bike Setup: | Marin Trail pro '02 Z-1... (soon '03 Vanilla-r w/yellow spring) | | Bottom Line: | So far after 100 miles of rather moderate abuse its fine, added about 5-8 miles per hour on my downhill sections, very stable once you hit 20 mph and pushing 30 on narrow singletrack its a blast. Compression damping works well but warning I'm riding a bike where one can adjust travel and rake on the trail so I can get nice bennie out of any shock. On a rising rate set-up this shock hardly bobs with a few clicks of compression damping travel only 3". On a neutral rate the shock 5" travel its smooth through its stroke and really handles studders and babyheads well. On decending rate I'm almost 35% into the travel (almost 7" travel) and it rides well only going to donut on hard flat landings. On decending rate it rides very smooth (feels like a low tire but eats all bumps at higher speeds) with extra damping needed and rebound extra the faster you go. Love the feeling of flying over junk I use to hobby horse over with the only -r or the float which both would pack up on the compression side. Great price on closeout due to new pro-petals coming in. No complaints so 5's all around | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$100.00 | | Purchased At: | eBay | | Strengths: | works good when it worked | | Weaknesses: | The shock body completly unthreaded. and lost like half the oil in the middle of a ride. tightened it back up, and it continued to loosen up over and over. now, there is no oil in it, and its garbage. its not under warrenty anymore, and to get it rebuilt would cost a ton. | | Bike Setup: | 2002 iron horse g-spot, Jr. T, Vanilla RC | | Bottom Line: | Its a decent shock when it works. but it only lasted me maybe a month, and that wasnt even with any hardcore riding, just XC and a couple small 5 ft drops.
If you're looking at this shock, do me a favor, and dont buy it. there are so many other products out there that are much nicer than this, and might actually last. Also, buy a shock that can be rebuilt at home, because shipping and rebuilding fees are to high. again, i dont like to see other mt bikers get stuck with expensive peices of crap, so im warning you, do yourself a favor and get a 5th element or a Swinger. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I am a mechanic at Bicycles Inc, but this is my first time to deal with a coil over. I have repeatedly done 10 and 11 foot drops on this shock, and it seemed to eat it all up. but today I found out it's leaking. and the top plate of the shock is bent, so I did bottom it out pretty hard. I do have a stronger spring on the way, which is a start. but I will have to send this in for service. While the shock was working, it's an awesome shock. I daily commute on my 45 pound big hit, and I wouldn't have it any other way. With this being my first time with a coil over system I'll give them benefit of the doubt, since I needed a stronger spring. But if it happens again, I'll send u another review of what I think. mine came stock with a 500 lb spring.. not enough, so I have a 650 on the way. For the people out there wondering what shock to get I would suggest this to anyone, but make sure you have your spring strength correct before you decide to throw it off your house, and doing other things your mother doesn't need to know heh :) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Seattle, USA Date Reviewed: March 31, 2003 | | Favorite Trail: | Not yours | | Duration Product Used: | 2 Years | | Purchased At: | with frame. | | Strengths: | Range of rebound damping, compression ok. The overall performance is good.... when its not in pieces. | | Weaknesses: | Like Rockshox rear shox, they blow themselves up. Fox builds their coil-over shocks to be non serviceable, which should mean that you dont have to mess with them.
This is of course not true. I have this shock on a Santa Cruz, and two things have happened several times.
a. The shock internal disinagrate. b, The threaded body that the spring adjustment is on, self-lossens while riding ( not adjusting mind you ). That means, you might go hit off some kicker on A-line and when you come down you blow all your shock oil all over you and your disc brakes and flip over the handlebars due to lack of any amount of rebound damping.
I would not be as verbal with the downsides, however the reality is that you have to send your rear shock in for a rebuild 1 to 2 times a year minimum, with at least $80.00 + shipping each time AND you have to wait weeks on end before you get it back ( which for you folks at higher elevations is not acceptable ). This would be be as big a deal if 1. it were rebuildable 2. it was cheap to rebuild 3. it was fast to rebuild 4. it did not frigg in break in the first place.
his all said, why would you want this shock?
A replacement is at least $ 300.00 for anything of it's "caliber". That said, why buy a bike that has a Fox shock on it? Exactly. Dont!
Support brands that have better built shocks ( which personally I not found one yet that is alright ) I have owned and ridden 1. Stratos ( not an improvement ) 2. Rockshox . Likewise 3. Fox. U know. 4. Some noleen hybrids ( dont ask ) - except they always stayed in one piece.... and this coming from a ski company :)
I have heard very good things about romic and 5th element. Both of which I am in the process of choosing. Feel free to drop me a line if you have some reccomends. ( note : Santa Cruz Super 8 ) | | Similar Products Used: | Whoops. above. | | Bike Setup: | More or less a standard Dh setup on A Super 8.
| | Bottom Line: | Leave Fox Shox on your girlfriends bike. ( no offense for avid girlfriend riders out there ) ( this is more a weight things, yeah.. ok the hole is getting deeper )
