Strengths:Comfortable, *super sticky*, look cool, will likely be long lasting if they're like other 5.10 products. Tongue designed to not slide around.
Weaknesses:A velcro strap to keep the laces out of the chains would have been a homerun.
    Similar Products Used:5.10 Insight.
Bike Setup:Stock Stumpy FSR with Drillium pedals. Also own Rockhopper with Specialized platforms.
Bottom Line:Already owned a pair of 5.10 Insights, which have 5.10 rubber and are designed for scrambling and hiking. They are good shoes, and I didn't expect much difference between them and the Impacts. But the Impacts grip the pedals at a whole 'nuther level of grip. I almost fell off the first time I went to dab. you don't scooch your feet around once you place them on the pedals. If you own platforms, these or their ilk are the shoes to have.

Soles are stiff, but not hiking boot stiff. They deform enough to go great with the drilliums, which have a concave face. fit is very comfortable. The feeling of interface with the pedals are that you are stepping on a bed of nails, as far as grip and resistance to sliding on the pedal. You can apply more power over a greater range of the pedal stroke. But they're not magic, your feet can still bounce off, particularly when pedaling hard uphill over obstacles. On flats and downhill they are the bomb.

I have multiple pairs of 5.10 climbing shoes, and they're well-built and lasting. Same with the Insights. I expect similar value from the Impacts.

    Strengths:
Almost indestructible. Well made, strong, stitching is good, laces make sure they don't slide around on your feet. No velcro to wear out. Super-grippy soles, re-inforced heel and toe areas, stealth black.
    Weaknesses:
    None.
    Similar Products Used:
Nothing compares to these. They are in a class all their own.
    Bike Setup:
    RIP 9 AM.
    Bottom Line:
These are THE BEST shoes for platform pedal riders that you can buy, at any price! Nothing else even comes close to these 5-10's for GRIP. They stick to platform pedals like glue. Not only that, but they are fine to walk in as well.

I have walked up the side of very slippery steep hills, over moss-covered logs and rocks and through slippery creeks with these grippy soles and they just keep on hanging on. A couple of walks gets them broken in nicely, then they are super comfortable to wear on and off the bike.

The Stealth rubber soles wear very well, they are grippy but tough. There is no crappy velcro to wear out, just good solid reliable laces.

I have had to restart on steep climbs and only had my foot on a quarter of the pedal but the shoe has never slipped off. They really grip.

The 5-10's last a long time. 2-3 years of riding is not uncommon for these excellent shoes.

If you shop around, they can be purchased quite cheaply, too. The value is outstanding.

I have NEVER had my 5-10's slip off a pedal .... not once.

With a decent set of platform pedals with some meaty traction pins in them, the 5-10s grip is very close to a clipped in pedal, but with the added advantage of being able to dab a few times when needed in tight techy situations...without having to even think about getting clipped back in or out.

These 5-10's are the mutts nutz of platform-pedal shoes.

If you havn't ridden platforms with 5-10's, you have no idea what you have been missing. These are the Rolls Royce, the absolute best.

    Highly Recommended... 5/5

    Bottom Line:
This is what I forgot to put in my review on these shoes...

If you have to get off the bike and walk, and we all sometimes do that if you ride decent trails, the 5-10 Impact shoes grip slippery surfaces like wet rocks and logs really well.

I can stand on wet mossy slippery rocks in my 5-10's no problem, but no other bike shoe will let me do that.

The soles are incredible for grip.

Strengths:Well made and solid-feeling with no weak spots. Good support for the feet, incredible grip. Black is stealthy and goes well with anything.
    Weaknesses:
    None.
Similar Products Used:Skate shoes, runners, etc..
    Bike Setup:AM / XC.
Bottom Line:These are the BEST shoes to wear if you are a platform pedal rider.
The soles stick like burrs on a blanket to any pedal and NEVER slip off.

I have had a foot on a 1/4 of the pedal after a hard uphill re-start and my foot stayed right there on that little bit of platform all the way to the top! These shoes do not move once they hit the pins.
They wear really well, I have had a couple of pairs that lasted two years of constant hard use.
It's not often that you find such a great product that works as well as these shoes do.
    Comfortable, tough, and soooooooooooooooooooo grippy.

    Bottom line:

I wouldn't wear anything else on platform pedals. These shoes are the Rolls Royce of Grippy-ness. GRIP with a capital G.

Strengths:The grip on the pedals! looks, comfort, price.
    Weaknesses:Really cannot find any
Similar Products Used:Vans/waffle grip, and similar 'skate' shoes
Bike Setup:previously 'haro' branded big flat pedals with extra long pins, now NC-17 SUD pins
Bottom Line:Believe the hype, these really are incredible.

I have the sam hill edition, which means it doesn't look like the older style ones which looked quite embarassing, and it differs from the new impact lo in that it has a standard tongue, not one attached on one side. they really grip the pedals unbelievably well, you wont slip, pedalling on the rough is now possible, easier to move the bike around in the air. £60 UK is a bargain when these shoes work so well. the Sam hill editions also have a strip of the UCI colours on the inside which is a nice touch. they're comfy and feel tough as boots, other than a bird crapping on em during my first ride with em, they have not seen the slightest bit of wear, tears or any damage, and the soles are lasting fine, look like new except for the dirt.

    Strengths:Sticky, sticky, sticky.
    Weaknesses:Not the most attractive shoe.
    Similar Products Used:661 Taki Descents
Bike Setup:FR bike with a pretty bell, basket and streamers
Bottom Line:Believe the hype. All other platform shoes should be compared to this shoe, they are that good.

Started riding on platforms and got the 661 Descents and was extremely disappointed in performance. There was poor poor grip and the 661s fell apart after 3 rides and after 3 months of use, the soles are complete worn off and thread has unraveled in several different spots.

Switched to SPD's and loved the attachment to the bike but hated the feeling of being sketched on stunts, drops and jumps.

After much research, picked up a pair of Impacts, put the flats back on and after just 1 ride, I'm convinced that I may never go back to clipless (unless I'm doing an epic XC ride).

These are originally hiking shoes so you better believe you can hike a bike up the steepest inclines w/o slipping. Once you set your foot on that pedal, its not going anywhere unless you lift your foot off that pedal. Shoes are also pretty burly so they can take a beating and protect your feet.

Stop looking further for reviews and go pick up a pair (if you can find one), it's well worth your yen.

Strengths:They STICK. They are tough. Not bulky
Weaknesses:I come from a strong clipless background, XC racing for 5 years. These are the best shoes ive worn that give me the grip of clipless, and freedom of flats. I guess if you dont have a clipless background some might say they are too sticky. Although ive ridden other shoes that are too sticky, In my opinion these are perfect. . . mad ugly though. only where these shoes when i ride.
Bike Setup:06' stumpjumper FSR, 06' Iron Horse Yakuza Kumicho
Bottom Line:These shoes actually improve my riding. On fast downhills i dont have to think at all about losing pedal grip. With this extra confidence i can do much more. I would have paid 100+ for these shoes. They ROCK.

Bottom Line:One of the best mtb purchases I've made. They look good enough to wear as normal shoes. I was suprised at how comfy they felt, better than any shoe I've owned. As for the rubber...wow. There's been plenty of times where I goofed up on a dh run and my foot is just barely hanging off the edge of the pedal and it will NOT slip off, it's a wierd feeling. A friend was going to buy some new pedals 'cause of traction issues. I told him to get some 510's first. He thought I was trippin, but when he got them he was the one trippin... at how well they work. The rubber is durable, mine barely show any wear. Also, no more toe injuries. Worth the $.

Strengths:Tread and construction. They don't cost all that much when you compare them to other specialist sport shoes.
Weaknesses:They contain animal based products, they're pretty warm on a hot day at the bike park, limited colour selection and they do take some getting used to, on accouna how amazingly sticky they are.
    Similar Products Used:Do Vans count?
Bike Setup:Decked-out '05 Norco Six and a fully pimped '05 Bigfoot hardtail. I usually use an Easton type of flat but sometimes I'll run my Truvativ Hussefelts because their pins are so minimalist it kinduv evens out the over tacky shoe, depends on how "zesty" I'm getting. (I also use Crank Brothers' Mallets but that's irrelevant in this case.)
Bottom Line:Believe the hype. Plain and simple. They are so sticky that sometimes setting up for a lip or a stunt I'll find my foot's not where I like it and I'll have to virtually peel my foot off the pedal and replace it. At high speed it's a bit unnerving at first. You get used to it. I like that they seem bulry in the toe and sole area so I'm not too worried about destroying toes and whatnot. They're surprisingly cozy in foul weather too.

Strengths:These shoes do what they say on the packet - no doubt that they stick to flats better than anything I've come across.
Weaknesses:Hate to say it, but I really don't like them. First up, I find them narrow fitting compared with Etnies and DCs - and they've ripped my feet to shreds. But thats not really the issue, because I do have wide feet- so worth mentioning for those with wide feet, but not a critisism in itself. I ride my bike aggresively and I'm on and off the pedals a lot. With these shoes, every time you start you have to consciously lift your foot and place it "inch perfect" on the pedal, cos theres no moving once its on. And if you don't do this, you'll find yourself rubbing your heel on the crank arm or locked in with the wrong part of your foot on the pedal. I find this a complete pain...like I've gone and bought clipless pedals without realising it ! The second concern is a weird one - these things stick so good that they actually hold during the "upstroke" of your pedal - so you find yourself spinning the pedals like a cross country rider. All good and well...but... I've had my foot come off the pedal way more than with regular shoes. I think they give you a weird sense of false security...you sub conciously pedal in a different way ... then every so often you find yourself losing a foot right where you don't want to. You may find this a weird comment (ie they're too sticky - but you keep losing your foot???) - just my experience.
Similar Products Used:None - have always used Etnies and DCs.
    Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Chameleon
Bottom Line:I think these are probably great for those who have come from a clipless background - or for those doing long uninterrupted rides. There is no doubt they stick fantastically. For me, they're a constant nuisance and slow me down. I've given them 4 for value because objectively they're well made shoes - more so than the other brands I've referred to above. Overall is 2 because for me, they just don't work. Sorry for all the hardcore converts in the other reviews!

Strengths:Grippy Stealth S1 Rubber! Sick construction and durability, fit is great - not too loose and can fit my wide foot. Color looks great once it’s covered in mud. If you ride flats of any type, don't leave home without this shoe!
Weaknesses:... a bit narrow in the toe but i wouldent want it too big.

Bottom Line:Jim Morrison said it right: “I am the Lizard King. I can do anything”! I’m pretty damn sure he was wearing a pair of Impacts when he said this: Stick like a Gecko and step up to a new level of riding with F*#$ YA security. I have never had a single piece of gear change my riding so dramatically! Spiky flats feel like clipless pedals in these shoes, you can actually suck the pedal up on a stroke because the rubber is so good. I don’t wear my armor nearly as much because of these little buggers, damn good investment. I thought that climbing rubber would disintegrate after being used on my flats… After three weeks these shoes look brand new (except the mud, dust and blood), my cheep Vans are normally half destroyed after the same time. I’m completely sold on these, the best part is I don’t even have to look at a new pair of shoes for some time!

The Stealth rubber sole alone is worth the price of admission because not only does it stay put on the pedal but it has great traction while walking/pushing. My biggest fear switching from clipless to platform pedals was having my foot slip or come off the pedal in a jump. The reality is that my foot only comes off the pedal when I screw up a jump, which is much less often than the premature clipless pedal releases.

The gripping really isn't just a 'hype' or a 'marginal feel', but rather makes quite a significant difference, providing sure-footing for confident-aspiring riding. In terms of durability, my Five.Ten soles are still going very strong after a year, while my VANS with OTW soles got chewed up by pedal pins within 3 months. I also like the wrap-around type tongue design, and they're quite comfortable all day. So glad that Five.Ten brought them back, after Intense dropped them. I'd highly recommend these.
