Awesome customer service, exceeded my expectations! Forgot to ask what they'll replace it with, see another reviewer got a 240s, which would be great! Due to the amount of use before failure I wouldn't normally still give 3 chilis but with customer service like that I was even tempted to go with 4...

After another year of regular usage, this wheelset is as smooth as the day I bought it. The wheelset is still true. Thinking after more than 3 years of usage, the hubset might need to be regreased or even rebuild. Took it to Sun Bike Shop for a checkup. They said the wheelset is working perfectly. When they open the hubs, they only regreased them because everything else is functioning perfectly. The owner (Sun) tells me to come back in a year and they will recheck it. My wheelset was built with 32 Rear and 28 Front on Bontrager Valiant rims. Front weigh 630 grams, Rear weigh 830 grams.

I now use them for muddy races or for really bad courses. Since then I've bought a second set and I currently have a third one on order. Strengths:
Light
Weaknesses:
Seals, bearings, "no tools" servicing con.
Bottom Line:
Certainly this is a light hub, but the overall usability has faultered on a number of counts.
First off, the bearings were never very free running- you know how you give it a few months and then it rolls for ages in your hands. Not so. Definitely more than acceptable resistance.
Secondly, the fancy named "labyrinth sealing" doesn't live up to much. Within 1.5 years of cross country muddy cycling, there's grit in the bearings and ratchet mechanism. Within 2 years the freehub is no longer 'free' but sticks alot.
So this is where the 'no- tools' servicing is meant to come in. Take off the freehub body (that connects to the cassette) and regrease the ratchets with special DT Swiss grease. Yet the freehub is totally stuck on despite following the manual. Any case, the bearings are grinding so they'll need replacing. But I can't get to them 'cos I need DT tools to open up the hub.
.... So you know this hub costs premium price right? well so does the servicing- the bearings cost £16 and the tool kit £95. Assuming the hub lasts another 2 years after servicing, the total cost for this hub for 4 years is c.£290 or £73 per year ($130 p.a.). That is fairly acceptable $$ for a premium product, but this hasn't performed like a premium product- better off buying next level down and replacing every 2 years.

have had no problems with the hub since then. i can recommend this hub, but if you have problems, call hugi right away, rather than messing around trying to get it to work right.

i have to sincerely apologise for my last post about the hubs,as i took my wheels to my lbs today and after the the mechanic checked out the rear hub's internals he asked me if i had stretched the springs which keep the teeth together and i said yes! he told me that's the reason why it wasnt working! it was nothing to do with the mechanics it was simply human error! i now understand what happened, the original dt grease had dried up so i used a thicker grease which made the teeth slide and not hook up but i thought that the best thing to do was to stretch the springs in order for the teeth to stay closer together but instead this caused the teeth to stick far too much together and although i could pedal i couldn't freewheel so it was a simple case of compressing the springs back to their original height and now it is working perfectly! so i take it all back SORRY DT! DT really do make precision engineered products it just a pity humans muck things up!

I have Chris King myself but these hubs have their virtues. I don't think Hugi will let such a nicely designed hub suffer a bad track record for long, especially when it's set its sights so squarely on King. I bet lighter riders (especially of the weight-conscious female variety) won't have to worry about the bearings going out so much, but I think thrash-and-dash medium to Clydesdale riders may want to wait for the track record to improve, or just bail for the manly-sounding Kings.
I really don't want to give stars for a component where track record is so important when I don't own them myself, so strictly within the context of initial impressions (light, smooth, gorgeous, nice sound) I'll say these things are a five.

I took the above-mentioned wheelset with me for a week of forest biking in Southwestern Oregon. The name of the game was roots. Big roots. Plus lots of big rocks. Everything held up great. The only problem--and it was small one--was that one day I picked the wrong line and rolled into a 3-foot deep pit that stopped me dead. The impact loosened the front hub a little, but it's nothing any mildly competent mechanic can't fix. One point about these hubs blowing up. DT/Hugi made two versions of their '00 240 hubset. The first version, which everyone who has complained seems to be reviewing, had structural problems with the pawls. They fixed it and issued a second version, which I have, and it works great. The way you can tell the difference is that when you spin the wheel, the original, not-so-good hub will make a loud clicking sound, kinda like a Chris King. The second generation, on the other hand, makes a quieter whirring sound. If you have the first version, I suggest you contact DT/Hugi's warranty department and talk to them about a replacement; I love my hubs.

Don't let the warranty folks at Specialized tell you they haven't seen this problem before like they tried to tell me. At Deer Valley NORBA I found three others that had same problems. It really is a shame, Hugi has historically made a great hub and I loved my old set. I have heard rumors of a new spring to help with pawl engagement? The front hub is the best I have ever seen! I would wait until the next model comes out before I would purchase this hub so that they can work out the bugs. I will upgrade to 3 chili's since they still work but will hold off for a year before I review again.

Bottom Line:
Received the hubs on 5/8/00 and built them that afternoon. Rode around in the street and they worked. On 5/9/00 went to local trail, the rear hub lasted about 1/4 mile before it blew up. Coasted back to vehicle and put my 3 yr old King back on and finished the ride. This is a poor example of an expensive hub. Even if it is fixed under warranty, I won't be able to trust it again. DT should stay with spokes and leave the hubs to someone else. I was worried about the hub when I bought it because of the other reviews and they were right. I would not buy this again, and I would like to get rid of the set I have now. I have never broken a hub until this one. In fact, I have every hub I have ever owned and they all still work. That is, except this pile of garbage. Even if they warranty this I can't give it more than 1 pepper simply for the unreliability of the hub. Who knows how many times I will have to send this back for repair. It may get more air time than a radio jock.

Sorry, Tri guy although I'm learning.
Duration Product Used:
Less than 1 month
Strengths:
Weight, durability, smoothness, reliability of the rear hub clutch system, finish quality, solid reputation.
Weaknesses:
22mm front hub interface was a bit wide for the Profile BDC Carbon fork dropouts although it did fit, barely, unlike the HED front hub.
Most mountain bike people won't care about my Litespeed Blade with Dura Ace but in order to put it in perspective, these hubs far outshine my Specialized hubs on the FSR Enduro Pro I bought 3 months ago.
Bottom Line:
Very durable for sprinting and rough roads laced radially front and two cross rear with DT Evolution 14/17 spokes and Velocity Deep V rims. Very light overall even with the heavier rims. Requires a good amount of break-in to spin freely but after ~600 road miles they are at least as smooth as the Chris Kings I read about but didn't want to wait 3 months for. As well as being a heck of a lot quieter. Would definitely upgrade my FSR to these after the Specialized go by the wayside.

The best lightweight hub i've ever owned. Compared to other lightweight hub, the dt swiss hügi 240 is much more durable (the use the same bearings as on the old bombproof, heavyweight hubs)
A must buy if you would like to build some custom lightweight wheels.

Strengths:
super lightweight, look great,smooth bearings,Hugi/DTSwiss' quality reputation,servicability
These are the ultimate lightweight hubs.Mine came in a wheelset weighing 1370g(Mavic X-517 32 spoke,DT Revolution black)which breaks down into 75g for the front and 210g for the rear hub. The new hub finish (silver and black)looks great. Five bearing rear and two bearing front hub run buttery smooth. Should service be necessary,no tools breakdown makes these hubs easy in maintenance. And finally DTSwiss has an excellent rep in quality, durability and service. In my opinion a grand start in the new Millenium for DTSwiss. What else but.......
