Favorite Trail:Roadie
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $170.00
Purchased At:BikeTiresDirect
Strengths:Very small and unobtrusive. Mounting works great...simple, elegant, and effective. Battery flexibility.
Weaknesses:Does not make my bike go any faster. Charger failed after 2 years...easily replaced. Wish I knew how to pronounce the name DiNotte! When freezing outside the red light comes on very quickly indicating low batteries. This is a false indication, presumably related to the batteries' inability to maintain full voltage or current in the cold? At any rate, the light has always worked just fine when this happens.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Look 585, DA (A bike), Scott Speedster, DA/Ultegra (B bike)
Bottom Line:Bought this light 2 years ago based on positive reviews on this forum, and have not regretted it one bit. System is tiny...smaller than the pics led me to believe and it mounts easily and securely to my bars. Going into my third cold winter of night riding I am still on the original rubber attachment strap. The beam is bright and a good compromise between a bright spot directly in front of you and some side-spillover for peripheral vision. I am comfortable at 25 mph with this beam pattern...any faster and I don't think I could react in time to a deer or other critter in the road. Stock batteries worked exactly as long as advertised, though I have bought a new set each year. Energizer 2500 mah and Duracell 2650 mah work even longer...2 solid hours on high. This thing is small, light, bright, and elegant. Lights up the road/trail well and makes it easy for others to see you. Charger failed after 2 years of use, so I bought another packaged with new batteries for this winter. Several friends have bought this light on my recommendation and they are very pleased as well. Note that if you want to carry a spare AA battery pack in your pocket you can pick up the plastic holder at Radio Shack for like $1.50. Overall, I don't see how one could do better for value and performance.

Strengths:Very light and Very bright!
Weaknesses:Helmet mount is a bit fiddley.
Similar Products Used:various Halogen lights, a mates HID.

Bottom Line:This light is great value for money. Using AA's is a bonus, taking a spare battery pack with you only costs about 125gms. Customer service is great.
The colour and spread of the beam is great for both road and bush. The light is bright enough for about 40kmh on the road (it won't burn off possums that run in front of you though) and any uphill or flat off road riding. I've just ordered the new model so that I can have a light on the helmet and one on the bars. I borrowed a mate's light and this dual setup does the trick for everything on and off road.
A great cheap LED setup that gives HID a run for a third of it's money.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $165.00
Purchased At:Dinotte
Strengths:Brightness, whiteness, beam pattern, cost, size, service from Rob, won't shut down, etc
Weaknesses:Connecter at battery pack could be more stout.
Similar Products Used:NightRider halogen loaner.
Bike Setup:Maverick Durance-DUC, X-9/X-0/XT, 10-sp FD, Juicy 7s, 819s, Minion DHF (run tubeless!), Spec Eskar Ctrl 2Bliss, 24/7 front hub, LaserLite rear hub, Speedball R, WTB Speed V, ATAC XS, Ergons, EA70 Monkey Bar
Bottom Line:For starters, LED is a (the?) way to go for light quality, price, durability, run-times. Bright white is way better than halogen's yellow. If you go with one light, go helmet (or at least with helmet and bar mount compatible).

I started night riding this time last year and borrowed a friends bar mounted NiteRider halogen. Older rechargeable battery crapped out after 15 min, but I was hooked on riding at night -- it doubled my riding opportunities.

Anyway, the Ultra 5 is now in the Pro Series 200L-AA-L-B (200 lumen, AA NiMH batteries, long cord). Same light and casing, etc. I run this light on my helmet only and use the long cord so I can put the batt pack in my MULE. I initially got the standard cord, without realizing their were options and it wouldn't reach my pack (Rob swapped it for free -- cables are NOT interchangeable as they start from inside the light). The light and batt pack are so light weight that you can mount the whole set up on your helmet, which I did initially, and it's not too bad. You have to use extra straps to secure the batt so it's not floppin.

For the singletrack riding I do, which is not so fast but very technical, the single light on my helmet is great. Having it on my helmet allows me to look where I'm headed, not just pointed. The light is nice and bright white with a great spread and just a hint of spot in the center. I love the white and when I'm with friends using halogen, I can't stand riding behind them. I've even run it in low when my batts were wearing out and it's totally rideable. At high power, I routinely get 2 hrs, after which it'll run on low for awhile (not sure how long). With 1-2 hr ride a week, my oem batts lasted 7-8 mos and by the end, I could barely get an hour on high. But, batts are cheap and in a pinch you can run disposable lithiums. However, they'll only get you about 3 hrs and the die precipitously, unlike NiMH which seem to fade.

The mount works great and is easy to put my light on the mount even with full fingers. Without the weight of the batt pack on my helment I can't tell it's there, especially if the cord is secured at the back of the helment so it doesn't slide over to your shoulder. Rob and Dinotte give you plenty of extra o-rings, batt packs, and velcro straps so no problem there. The light is VERY durable as I've smacked it hard many times on branches (can be tough to use your peripheral above when you have a visor). Nary a scratch and it stays put. Only one real wipeout and everything stayed put and connected.

I've also used this one light in a 24hr race and only on the fastest descents (~20 mph) did I feel like I was insufficiently lit, but I still managed to maintain the same lap times at night as during the day. More light would have been better, but for 1 race a year I'll stick with my trusty Ultra 5/200L.

A friend has a minewt.x2 as a helment and x2 dual on his bars and that's pretty trick. When he's behind me, his lights overpower mine and I'm pretty much riding 'with' his. Nevertheless, that setup is HID-cost territory.

You can get this light with Li-ion for another ~$100 but unless you're doing >2 hr rides or want to run multiple lights, the AA is THE value. I don't believe that you can upgrade, though I imagine Rob would work out something for you to ease the pain.

One last thing. These lights will not shut off when the batt is dying -- they'll squeeze whatever juice is left in the batts till the bitter end. This happened to me during one of my 24hr race laps with disposable lithiums.

Strengths:Great light, very bright, lightweight, sturdy.
Weaknesses:AA battery connections were causing a bit of trouble on rough trails.
Similar Products Used:NiteRider Trail Rat, NiteRider Classic Plus
Bike Setup:Trek Top Fuel 9.8
Bottom Line:This is a follow up to my previous posting. I have used these lights for some time now - one on the helmet, two on the handlebar - great lighting. I was switching out batteries for run time -Rob was a big help and suggested that the money I spent on chargers and batteries was better spent on the li-ion lights. He agreed to trade the lights in!!!! The connections on the AA battery packs sometime would get loose on rough trails, the connections on the li-ion are superb (plus 4 hrs run time), and the value of the li-ion is better than any other light out there (believe me, I have checked). Three 5W - 200L lights is all the light ANYBODY needs - ideal! I cannot say enough about the service that Rob and his people provide! There is no reason, service wise and value, for anyone to even consider any other lights. I am sold, and you will be too. They have made me a loyal customer through their service.

Price Paid: $160.00
Purchased At:REI
Strengths:Light, simple, easy to mount, well constructed, easy to use, and able to use NiMH that I can buy at any store. Great reviews from other people also made a difference for me.
Weaknesses:Can't get exactly the right beam direction if you don't mount right in the middle of your bars.

Bottom Line:I read reviews here and after shopping around, decided to get this light from REI. I always buy from REI if I can because of their amazing customer service. I was shopping for an effecient and bright light to get me around Camp since I work nights and ride a bike almost every where. This is an extremely bright light that is very easy to install and understand. I bought an extra set of batteries to supplement the 4 it came with. Now I always have a set of batteries ready to install. It has 3 intensities for both the steady light and the flashing mode. I hang the battery bag underneath my stem and hardly notice it's there. With the O-ring, it stays in place but allows for small adjustments on the fly. Most of us ride bikes down here to get around camp and everyone comments on how bright my light is. The converter is dual voltage which is convenient since Iraq is 220. Lastly, I love that it has a low battery feature-pulses for two seconds and the button turns red. I ride every night on short trips around camp (10-20 minutes a night average) and am finding I can get over one week on one set of batteries. Haven't been on a long ride and don't know if I will over the next year. Bottom line-I am extremely pleased with this purchase. It was tough to accept spending so much money, but has proven well worth it. I would seriously recommend considering this light.

Strengths:Very nice light, bright for road riding, very lightweight, cool looking, good quality
Weaknesses:rechargeable nimh's just don't work for me. Unless you are well acquainted with aa-nimh, this may not be good for you
Similar Products Used:cateye el530, sigma sport halogen, cygolite, minewt x2 lithium, a couple other cheap ones i cant recall and were crappy
Bike Setup:ROAD BIKE ONLY. 2004 bianchi imola 105 9-spd, cateye tld 1000 tail light, minoura space bar, whate else do you need to know?? :-)
Bottom Line:I really thought this would be "THE Light" and really wanted it to work out better and be the light of my dreams, alas, no, Look, I am not a genius but I am no idiot either, but I have dealt with aa- nimh rechargeables in the past, and for some reason, I guess I just don't have the touch to get decent results with them. The light was awesome, right up until it went into low power conservation mode, very very early on in every ride. I would follow the manufactures recommendations for properconditiong and leave them on teh charger right up to the beginning of the ride. Despite my efforts, time at full power was mediocre ate best, and to top that, the sheet that came with it said to not operate at low power whenever possible. hmmm....after a week or two of being on edge throughout my rides waiting for the batteries to give out entirely, I decided I couldn't take it any longer, returned it and got the niterider minewt x2 lithium. Couldn't be happier. (Well I'd be happier with a light and motion stella lithium, but they cost twice the price of the minewt)

Lithium's rule. Unless you have good luck with nimh in the past, lithium is the battery to have. No questions.

The led/lithium combo is the ticket for road riders who want substantial light. I do not ride a mountain bike, so please make sure you compare apples to apples.

This is a great light in the hands of the right person. It just didn't work for me.

Strengths:Very bright (on high), great quality, uses AA batteries, helmet or bar mount, easy to mount, light weight, GREAT costomer service,
Weaknesses:Can get hot, run time could be better: 1.5 hr on high, 2hr on medium and 2.5 hr on low, medium and low aren't usable for trail riding, if you have the 12 inch cord model and you want to use it on your helmet you have to put the battery pack on your helmet too.
Bottom Line:Bought this light about 7 months ago for a 24 hr race. It had the 140 lumen LED and the 12 inch cord. Worked great at the race.
A couple months later a had a bad crash and cracked my helmet and had to buy a new one. I bought a bell sweep. The air vents on that helmet are oriented in a way that made it difficult to mount both the light and battery park on the helmet. I called up DiNotte to see if I could get the longer cord installed on my light so I could put the battery pack in my jersey pocket. I sent my light in; they installed the longer cord, and replaced the 140 lumen LED with a 200 lumen LED, all for $60. When I got the light back, in the box was light wand 2 extra sets of batteries they had thrown in for free! This all took less than two weeks!
The new LED is noticably brighter and the longer cord makes helmet mounting much much easier.
I HIGHLY recomend this light.

Strengths:Very bright, super even light beam, very light, easy to mount and remove, uses AA rechargeable batteries for greater flexibility.
Weaknesses:None so far
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:ETSX-30
Bottom Line:These lights are phenomenal and with two, I can ride extreme tight, rocky, and often previously unridden, single track at almost daylight speeds. The beam is perfectly even with no bright spots and lights the way ahead like car headlights. I only started out-riding the light when approaching 30mph on single track.
I've got one with a short cord for the handlebars, and one with a long one for helmet mounting. On the road I only need one of them since they are so bright, but off-road the helmet mounted light is essential. If I only had to have one, it would be the helmet mounted one and that wouldn't stop me riding off-road at all.
I've been out riding on really rocky single track and have had no problems with the battery cable snap undoing like the previous reviewer. In fact, the simple battery holders and snap connection are great for quick changes of batteries when out riding for more than a couple of hours or mid-race. But I would carry a ziplock bag or something to waterproof the battery pack if planning a wet ride.
The simple mounting is great for quickly removing the light if stopping anywhere and the light stays firmly mounted over the roughest terrain. Also, I suspect that in a crash the light will just get knocked off or rotate around the bar and not get damaged like one on a fixed mount. Being an LED, I've also got no worries about crashing and having to replace a $100 HID bulb.
The helmet mount is basic, but works perfectly and stays on even when bouncing downhill; just tuck in the straps to stop any annoying flapping. Using AA rechargeable batteries is a bonus for me since I'll always have a set charged up and can always pick some up from a store in an emergency. The flash feature is useful when on the road and the lower light features are useful around the campsite at night even if it'll still blow your fellow campers night vision every time they look at it.
I followed the battery charging instructions on Dinotte's website carefully and have been getting at least 1 hr 40 mins if not closer to 2 hours of high beam per charge.
I can highly recommend these lights and know I'll be using them through the winter and will finally be able to train properly both on and off-road even though I'm stuck in a 9-5 job.
Customer service (via Rob at Dinotte) was fantastic - great advice on what to get, and when it appeared that one of the batteries might be faulty I was sent a brand new set without any questions asked.

Strengths:Compact, lightweight, non proprietary battery pack/recharger
Weaknesses:Electrical connector, battery pack case/holder
Similar Products Used:Cateye handlebar mounted lights, blinkies.
Bike Setup:Jamis Nova, FG commuter, Sumitomo CP Ti racer -- all commuter rigs
Bottom Line:Count me among the many here who are more than pleased with the Dinotte Ultra 5. It's about as an ideal solution to my needs as I can hope to expect.
For most of the year my 40+ KM round trip commute takes place at night, along residential streets and multi-use paths with poor or no lighting. In this environment the DU5 delivers the required illumination and superior visibility, all the while using a practical power source -- AAA batteries and chargers are readily and cheaply available -- and packaged in a lightweight and durable design!
The rubber O-ring mounting scheme for the DU5 is simple yet clever -- switching the Dinotte to a different bike doesn't involve fiddling with clamps and tools. No muss, no fuss.
My initial concern that the burn time would not be sufficient for my commute proved unfounded: as rechargeable AAA batteries increase in milli-amp hours, the light, on high power, lasts for 2+ hours between recharges. But if one should require extra juice a trip to Radio Shack will buy you a spare battery pack for a couple of bucks.
But the Dinotte is not without its faults. The most irksome is the cheap 9-volt battery type connector for the battery pack. On more than one occasion a bumpy stretch of road has plunged me into darkness when the connector liberated itself from its counterpart. I would like to see a more robust connector -- perhaps a screw-on fastener similar to coaxial cable connectors. A cheap, effective solution is to secure the connectors by wrapping a heavy duty elastic band around them and the battery pack -- no more lights out when riding over potholes.
The nylon battery pack holder could also be better designed: too bad its not waterproof, or at least more water resistant. In my spare parts bin a neoprene pouch for a Topeak multi-tool (complete with an integrated strap loop and velcro closure) presented itself as a better substitute. The AAAs now stay reasonably dry while riding in downpours.
The DU5 can be considered an excellent product for short nocturnal rides supplemented by secondary lighting. Extreme midnight bombers barrelling at high speed through the darkness down technical trails should look for more lumens. Compliments to the folks at Dinotte for their work.

Strengths:Compact, lightweight, bright!, good beam coverage, attention-getting flash when you need to be seen, uses standard NiMH AA batteries (batts and charger included), 2 battery holders provided for quick battery switches on the run, helmet mount included.
Weaknesses:Needs realignment every time it's mounted, multi-push switch confusing initially, short power cord limits battery mount locations, no straight-ahead "hot spot", battery holder has exposed contacts which could be accidentally shorted in a pocket or bag, didn't really need another NiMH charger.

Bottom Line:I got tired of replacing lead-acid batteries for the Trail Rat, not to mention even small ones weigh a ton. When I heard Geo.Man had the DiNotte Ultra 5 for $129 plus shipping I jumped on it! I am not disappointed in the least. It does take some getting used to. The beam is advertised as 20 degrees and it's pretty even across its spread. I was used to the Trail Rat's "hot spot", and the Ultra 5 doesn't have one. I think I would prefer a slightly narrower beam for street use. The O-ring mount is clever, easy to install and remove, and lightweight, but it means the Ultra 5 has to be re-aligned every time it's installed. This is a disadvantage on a commute bike that is frequently parked in unsecured areas. I already had buckets of rechargeable AA batteries, and DiNotte included a second battery holder, so the 100 minute limit at full power on a single set is only a minor nuisance. On the whole, though, I'm nitpicking. It's small, light, and bright, and it's well worth the $140!

Bottom Line:I recently started riding a Catrike Road, recumbent tricycle, switching from a DF bike after 30 years. I ride on the road, in traffic, so with a recumbent trike being visible to traffic is very important. The DiNotte Ultra 5 is an extremely bright white light, with bright, dim, and flash functions. I mounted it on a Swingrip on the chainring post and use it day and night in the flash mode. Flash mode works fine at night unless you are on a pitch black road. If you do need to change modes you just reach forward and push a button. The small size of the light engine looks good, and does not interrupt the line of sight. I had an A Type rider pull up and talk to me about the lights on a recent ride; I have never had an A Type do this before in 30 years of riding. The light runs 12 hours on flash, and you can switch battery packs if necessary.

DiNotte lights, besides being very bright, add a nice high tech complement to my already unusual Catrike.

The icing on the cake has been the super way the DiNotte customer service has treated me.

I recommend DiNotte lights to anyone who plays in traffic and wants to be seen.

Bottom Line:I just got this light and am very impressed. It's bright enough for unlit trails with a high powered central beam and good spread. Even at 25 mph, I don't outride the beam. The helmet mount is supprisingly light, due to the small size and light weight .. and the O-ring mount is very stable. With a bumpy single track, the light didn't move or need any re-adjusting. Even so, I would like a longer cable to put the battery pack in my camelcack. I have only used it on 90 minute rides so far and the battery life was fine. I plan on picking up a higher capacity set of replacements (the use of standard batteries by Dinotte was a mojor selling point for me. They offered to swap the light engine for a long cord model for a very reasonable charge. I mailed them the light, and got the new light back a few days later - they even charged me a few bucks less than they originally quoted.
With the long cord, I have no more complaints. The batteries are protected, and all the other great things about the light are still true - it weighs nothing, is bright, and uses standard batteries. I have a 60-80 minute commute (each way), so the "short" battery life hasn't been an issue.
It's a great light.

Bottom Line:I built my own extension cable to get the batteries where they would stay dry and warmer (inside my jacket). Would have been happy to buy one, or at least get something better than "why don't you buy one of our other lights - it has a longer cable" from customer support.
Having gotten my whining out of the way - it's a great light. I'd be happy to trade my Blackburn X6 for a second one, so I'd have one on my helmet, and one on my handlebars.
Not so sure about longer rides - easy enough to carry more batteries, but a drag to have to switch them on the trail.

Bottom Line:These lights are all that is advertised - Excellent!!

I've replaced my bulky, difficult to keep charged, wires everywhere, dual handlebar mount lights(5W and 15W halogen) with just one simple light that is small enough to sit on my helmet with it's batteries and it still kicks out plenty of light.

On battery life, my light came with 2300mah batteries, I bought a spare set of 2900mah batteries and they get me to around 2hrs life span on high. A spare set of batteries weights so little and fits easily in my camelback.

If you have any questions, just email Dinotte, I did and they responded really fast and were very helpful - so they also get thumbs up on customer service.

Strengths:Bright, lightweight, easy attachment. Great customer service at DiNotte online store.
Weaknesses:Shortish battery life: the claims on the website are accurate, but if you don't want to spend the extra money on their lithium ion setup you should be prepared to carry around an extra set of AAs or just top them off frequently.

Bottom Line:A great light for the money. Plenty bright to ride on streets that don't have streetlights, even into the glare of oncoming car headlights. Certainly gets drivers to notice you better than little LEDs do. I haven't tried it yet on a weekend road ride, but I'm guessing it would not be enough for a really fast descent. That said, at speeds of 20mph or below I trust it completely.

The reason my setup was $159 instead of the $199 listed (as of now) online is that I emailed them to ask if I could delete the batteries and charger since I already have some. They responded right away and accomodated my request.

Strengths:Reliability, ease of battery changing/availability, weight, style, battery life, size, mounting!
Weaknesses:Struggle to tell the difference between hard mud and boggy terrain (yes I struggled to find a proper weakness)!
Similar Products Used:The sun :-)
Bike Setup:GT Avalanche 1.0 disk 2006
Bottom Line:First of all, I would like to say that the customer service from Rob is fantastic, not only did I receive the 2 lights I ordered(2 x 5w ultra), but also an unexpected bag of spares comprising of extra battery holders, O rings and velcro straps.

The first thing I did after ordering the lights was buy 8 branded 2700mah AA NI-MH batteries and charged them overnight. The first ride I was a little sceptical, but as soon as daylight disappeared, I was overwhelmed with the quality of the lights. The light formation of the dinotte is perfect, it almost seems that a spot and flood light are combined into a single unit. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly better to navigate the trails with the sun, but as an alternative, I couldn't be more pleased with the ultra 5. The O ring certainly holds the light in place, even riding down steep steps and rugged terain, infact, the mounting works perfectly, but before buying I was a little worried whether it would be secure!

The low power mode of the light is only a fraction dimmer than full power and is certainly bright enough to get home before losing battery power.

The light itself weighs almost nothing, and the batteries must weigh more than double than that of the complete light unit. I recommend carrying a spare set of lithium batteries in case of emergency. Lithium batteries are extremely light compared to nickel metal hydride, and won't lose their charge over short time periods, like rechargable batteries. I think carrying a spare set of ni-mh wouldn't be as good as lithium because of the weight, and constant charging to keep topped up.

Also, the lights come with a 2 year parts and labour warranty, which, combined with the excellent support from Dinotte makes me very satisfied with the product and aftersales.

The battery clip is very good quality, but be careful not to carry an exposed loaded battery pack in your pocket with other metalic object such as coins or keys, otherwise you'll find yourself been in posession of a portable heating device as well as a bike light battery pack! I keep a spare battery pack wrapped in cling film in my saddle bag.

Overall, the quality of the light is fantastic, the light output is fantastic, and the battery life is very good. Remember, even when the batteries start to drain, the LED doesn't die immediately, but keeps going on low power for what seems like ages.

The only downside is, sometimes I think the light makes my bike look a little cheap, also puddles don't reflect the same as in daylight and are difficult to tell apart from muddy terrain. Other than my nit picking, the light is perfect and I would certainly recommend!

Strengths:Light, bright, ease of use, reliable, batteries easy to replace.
Weaknesses:Limited run time of 4 AA NiMH battery pack... (not a weakness for me as the light lasts longer than I do).
Similar Products Used:Too many to list...
Bike Setup:Need a new bike :)
Bottom Line:I've had my light for one year. It has performed flawlessly. I cannot add much more than what has already been said, but I want to give credit to a great light. Not as bright as a HID but no hot spot that blows your night vision... once you use it you'll understand. I swapped lights with a friend in the middle of a night ride. He was only supposed use it for one lap, but he kept it for the rest of the ride because he felt that it put out more useable light.

As for durability. I had the light mounted on my helmet, and had a wreck. I hit hard enough to break (smash) my knose and split the helmt, but the light still works just as good today as when I bought it. I wish I could say the same about my knose after the accident.

Great light! I just bought the tail light to go with it.

Strengths:Amazingly wide, clean, and penetrating light beam! Light's weight is feather light. Puts all LED and many halogens and Xenons to shame! Very sexy presentation. Can double run time with $2 spare Batt. holder from Radio Shack and 2650-2700mah Batt. presently available from Duracell or Powerex!
Weaknesses:Battery pouch is not waterproof but can be made water resistant with tape and, if need be, piece of plastic bag.

Bottom Line:When I first opened the plain cardboard box I was disappointed, thinking I had purchased an overpriced $20 L.E.D. Flasher, but then I charged it up and went for a ride on a very dark and rutty city bike trail frequented by joggers, dog walkers, and cyclist kryptonite.... Power Walkers! I used to have to scream comming up on your left! This night an amazing thing happened. Not only was I able to see a good 60ft. in front of me but joggers, cyclist, and others including there pets turned to see what was so bright comming up behind them. What was amazing was the distance this phenomena occurred. These people were looking behind them from about 50 yards up, seemingly beyond this lights beam! "Wow, that's bright!" is all I heard muttered as I passed them, with all the berth three bikers would need. That night, the Dinotte Ultra5 lasted on the plush side of 2 hours before gently going into reserve mode. The next day, with a huge grin on my face, I went down to the local Radio Shack and purchased an identical Batt. holder to the one provided by Dinotte, for $2 dollars and 8 2650mah Duracells from K-Mart. This set-up makes a good run time into a never-ending runtime because swapping my already preloaded, more powerful, battery cartridge only took 8 short seconds! Think about this before you splurge on the L-Ion Batt.s! Sorry Din.Lighting. As they would say in Fargo, "Great Light?" "You betcha!" Great Price? "Compared to what you get.... U Betcha!" Power supply endlessly upgradable? "You betcha!" Good customer service from Manufact.? "You betcha!" "End of Story!"

Strengths:Brilliant light with total weight less than 7 oz. Easy tool-free mounting. Kit includes light engine, NiMH batteries, charger, battery holder and pouch, helmet mount, extra O-rings, and instructions for use. Uses NiMH rechargeable AA cells. Great customer service and warranty.
Weaknesses:Like someone else said, DiNotte makes my halogen lights look yellow and dim.
Similar Products Used:Halogen multi-lamp systems from bicyclights.com and other companies.
Bike Setup:Trek 5000 carbon road bike with 8000+ road miles since 10/04.
Bottom Line:I have been riding more than 12 years and this is the best bicycle light I’ve ever used. I have other bicycle lights that I tried in my quest to find a brilliant light that didn’t weigh much or cost a fortune. My other high-wattage units have heavy batteries and mounting brackets that could be useless if mounting screws got broken or damaged.

The DiNotte 5W system I’m currently using weighs 6.9 ounces. It mounts with a simple O-ring that fits into two notches on the light engine. The battery pouch has a velcro strap and can be mounted anywhere as long as the cable will reach. You can change the light’s position or angle very easily without stopping and it won’t come loose unless the O-ring breaks. These lights can be easily removed from your bars and quickly attached to a helmet or another bike.

I bought my lights on eBay after seeing them online for $200 - 250. They were new but apparently were 2005 models. I emailed tech support and found out that these units would be eligible for the full retail warranty. I also learned that I could get the “light engine” upgraded very cheaply so that it had all the features of the 2006 models. Tech support response time was fast.

This unit has 3 modes: low, high, and flash. You don’t want to look at the beam. I tried out the flash mode several nights ago and saw the flashing beam in every reflective object for at least 500 feet. It makes you highly visible to motorists, who already flash their lights at me as I ride toward them.

When you first get your light you’ll need to condition the batteries. I have several sets of spare batteries and keep at least one set trickle charging so it will be fresh for my rides. I found some Toshiba 2700 mAh industrial batteries that give a bit longer running time than what is specified. You can find extra battery holders at places like radio shack, and I bring a spare with me on longer rides.

When the batteries start dying the light flashes a bit and then the indicator turns red. The light is locked on and will stay lit until the voltage falls below specs. The light output will gradually fade untill it is almost too dim to see. That's why it's a good idea to bring a spare battery pack.

Strengths:3 and 5 watt LED power is bright and reliable. Mounting set up is simple, tool free, rider adjustable, and fast. Other systems require semi permanent mounting hardwear that is not easily adjusted as you ride. Battery power is easily and cheaply replacable. Looks high tech, takes up very little space on the bars and under the stem. Light power is good enough for Cars and pedestrians give you respect.
Weaknesses:I wish the battery life were longer, but I carry extra batteries. Looks like newer batteries are comming out with longer burn times. Duracell has one that's 2650 mAH.
Similar Products Used:Niterider Trail rat, Topeak Moonshine 3H, an old NightSun 5-12 watt, CatEye 1 watt HE EL 500.
Bike Setup:Various toys. Intense 5.5-Pushed, Specialized FSR-MRPed, Jamis Komodo HT disc, GT single speed, and various roadie gear.
Bottom Line:Look, this lighting system is made for riders with multiple bikes. Which ever one you want to ride, it just takes a couple of tool free minutes and you are out into the night. I've got the 5 watt on my bars and the 3 watt on my helmet. The combination is everything I could want and never had before.

During most rides I use the lower power settings on both bar and helmet lights. But whenever I see or hear something coming up in the distance, it just takes a push of each button to brighten up things. Cars and nighttime pedestrians (usually without any illumination) give you plenty of room. The white light pattern is a full circle, no weird ghosts or wavy rays from fluted lens. You can tell when the batteries are low when the light flickers and goes into the low mode. I expect the LED bulbs to last quite a while. I remember one of my old NightSun halogen bulbs went out after a crash involving a unleashed dog.

I also recommend the helmet light setup. It's great to look off the trail, into trees or brush and see the glowing eyes of hiding nite critters. The other day, I surprised a couple of kids who were laying low in the grass. Of course I have this set up on my second helmet.

Don't buy this lighting system if you need more than two hours on a single charge. It works well if you remember to keep your batteries charged.

By the way, my tail lights range from the CatEye LD1000 (Eight eyecatching dancing LEDs) to the new Planet Bike Super Flash (1/2 watt car blinding blinker). And I always carry my CatEye EL 500 as a backup headlight and trail light for repairs.

Bottom Line:I purchased a Dinotte ultra 5 front light direct from Dinotte after reading the reviews on cyclingnews.com and the reviews on this site. 3 working days later it arrived (all the way to Sydney) and the first thing I noticed was the build quality and the light weight. I had already charged some 2500 mah batteries and made the mistake of turning the light on and looking directly into it. It took half an hour for my vision to recover. I ride to and from work in Sydney's peak hour traffic (about a 45km round trip) every day and the light is fantastic on both flash and solid beam. The solid beam pattern is perfect for lighting the road and being seen. Not one driver has pulled out in front of me since I have had the light, whereas with my cheap low power LED, it used to happen all the time. Battery life is a bit better than as stated (now looking for 2700 batteries to improve it further). While not cheap (compared to other LED's) its worth the money.

Strengths:Extraordinarily light weight (211 grams for entire system, including batteries). I don't mind leaving it mounted even when I ride during the day, something no self-respecting roadie would do with a larger light.

Produces great visibility over a wide angle--even pointed down a bit to illuminate the road 20 feet ahead of my bike, street signs 100 yards off light up as I approach.

On one of my first rides I returned home to find a neighbor standing at the foot of her driveway. She said, "I've never seen anything so bright on a bicycle before, and I wanted to see what it was."
Weaknesses:For me, none. Battery life is about as advertised--I get about 1-1/2 hours on high, but since I start riding no more than an hour before dawn, the sky lights up before the batteries die. If you want to do an all-night ride, you would need to bring extra batteries (AA NiMH).

Bottom Line:Outstanding quality, value and weight. Also important to note that DiNotte's customer service is first-rate. I ordered the unit online at around 3:00 p.m. one day this summer, and received an email within 30 minutes that it would be shipped that afternoon.

Last week I put the battery pack in my pocket so I'd remember to charge the batteries. When I later put my car keys in my pocket a key crossed the contacts and shorted the batteries. I felt a sudden heat in my pocket and pulled out a melted battery case. Left a voicemail for DiNotte the next morning describing my problem, and they sent me a new battery case at no charge the same day.

Strengths:Very bright, and a better kind of light (white? Blue?) than the niterider that I've had. The mounting system is very good, and the convenince of the compact size and weight are really important to me. I commute, and have to carry the batteries around with me and having a massive battery would (and was) really a drag. Strengths:Okay, I'll cut to the chase. This is by far and away the brightest LED system I have ever used. When I first fired it up I was accidentally pointing the dimmer tail light at my face. The shock was enough to knock me over and leave me unable to see out of one eye for quite a while! They aren't quite a bright as my friends Lupine 10W halide, but then again they are about 1/6 of the price. I've only got the single front light (5w led) and rear light (3w led) but this is quite ample for most trail work. I took my bike out the day they arrived (I had pre-charged some AA batteries) and found I was able to go faster and with more confidence down our local trails than with my previous setup. The light is quite blue/white and really picks up the detail of the trail very clearly. I imagine having the dual setup (narrow beam + flood) and/or a helmet mount would be even better! Another huge benefit is the tail light, it's so bright that one of the guys I rode with said he could probably have turned off his headlight and ridden using my taillight.

For commuting use these simply have no equal. I do a very long commute into work every morning for training (~3hrs) on multi lane roads with high speed lilmits. Previously I've felt like I was taking my life into my own hands but now cars see me from so much further away that I've found that they give me much more room. I imagine they think I'm a motorbike until they get close! I can also see the road much farther ahead (out to about 100m) and both front and rear lights give just enough light spill out to the side to warn drivers coming out of turnings without blinding you at the same time.

Battery life is very good (marginally better than stated on the website I've found) and the best bit is that if the batteries do start to go then I can just buy another set of AAs!

They are very light (I'd say way less than 80 grams excluding batteries) and mounting them is really simple with the o-ring system. It also holds them surprisingly secure.

Finally, I'd like to add that the guys at Dinotte are great! Customer service in the US does seem to be generally a notch above the UK but Rob takes it to a whole new level. All my e-mailed questions were answered within a few hours of asking them, he gave me a discount on the lights AND he threw in some very good batteries.

I think the price is excellent. I paid $300 for both the front and the rear and for that price got shipping to the UK included. You'll be hard pressed to find any light of approaching this quality for up to twice the price. To exceed the quality (in terms of brightnes only) you really have to go for a full on set of Lupines (~$1000 each) and even they aren't that much brighter.

As I've not had them very long at all I can't comment on reliability etc but I will report back when I've had them a bit longer

Weaknesses:They look far too cool for my bike.

They make my expensive halogen lights look dim :(

Non-cyclists will find it very sad how excited you get about some lights and you may lose friends as a result!

Strengths:Very versatile and easy headlight mount. Totally lightweight but a heavyweight in performance. Use this in the dual mode with the 3 watt version and you can both see and be seen! The easiest helmet mount I've used and super adjustable.
Weaknesses:Some say it's pricey but what is your life worth to you? Compared to HID it's a DEAL!
Similar Products Used:Nearly all other brands of Halogen and HID
Bike Setup:Recumbent bikes and trikes both on and off the road.
Bottom Line:This is only lighting system I have trusted for the last several months after being left in the dark by a couple others...especially during super long night rides. Super reliable and lots of burn time with the Lithium batteries. For 3 hours or less..I use the the AA packs. Gets lots of good comments from other night riders...in fact, I often tow others back to safety when their lights have faded away. With the fixed 5 watter on my bars and the 3 watt on the helmet mount I can hammer as fast as I want and never worry about being seen! Both road and off road riders should consider this lighting system.
