Submitted by I have a kool bike a Cross Country Rider from Danville
Date Reviewed: July 19, 2009
Favorite Trail:Juniper. Mt. Diablo
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Sport chalet
Strengths:Has a nice seat. Kenda tires okay( for 2 months at most). Grips.
Weaknesses:The components. The worst fork on the planet
Similar Products Used:Trek 3700
Bike Setup:Stock w/ new seat post and grips and rims and tubes
Bottom Line:This bike is strictly for having your kids ride to school. The cranks have broken twice, seat post broke, gears mess up fast( won't let me go in the third chainring), brake pads wore down fast, both rims broke 1st crash. Never use it offroad.

The bike is probably like that because I ride trails every day.

If you buy this buy it at a bike shop. Because they will build it right and will know how to fix it and will be glad to do so.

Favorite Trail:Round Bay (for now)
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Dick's Sporting Good
Strengths:Super rigid frame, decent components (except the fork and pedals), solid construction, disc brakes (my son's version is the Response with disc brakes: I think it's called the SE or XE), super price when on sale.
Weaknesses:The Spinner Edge fork. On the very first ride, one of the dust seals popped out of place. If this seal is not put back, dust will get between the shaft and the seal on the inner oil seal, and ruin the shock in short order. Dick's response was to say they couldn't handle that simple repair, so they wanted to ship it back to the factory! I used to work on Mercruiser Outdrives, so I put the seal back myself. But the stock fork on my son's bike rattles, and it already appears to be leaking oil after 4 or 5 rides.
Similar Products Used:1983 Ross Mount Hood, 1985 Cannondale Aluminum, 2009 Fisher Marlin Disc.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:This is a great bike that is hampered by the fact that it's sold at sporting goods stores with worthless bike service departments. I suspect they sell factory seconds, also. I looked at the Response Sport in black, but one of two bikes had a defect, and one of the locking fork mechanisms on another was broken in the store. So unless you can get this bike at a bike shop, you may want to pass or plan to service it yourself. This is great for newcomers or teenagers, but serious riders will have to change that fork immediately, which ruins the price to value ratio.

Favorite Trail:anywhere i am allowed to ride!
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:wesmoreland bike sup
Strengths:bike is built like a tank, stiff frame..very little, if any flex when pedaling hard, even out of the saddle. hard to beat the components for the price paid. brakes and shifters work well. paint color(copper) looks kind of odd in pictures, but looks good in person. rock shocks tora fork is an upgrade over the rs dart 3(in my humble opinion)that most bikes in this price range seem to come with. tested and looked at just about everything in this $$$$range, and this is about the sweetest deal out there..totally happy with this bike and with the bike shop that i purchased it from. 22 inch frame fits me well and am very comfortable, esp. when climbing.
Weaknesses:a little heavy, but i could care less...I am 6ft 5in 240lbs. and not very well coordinated, so i want a bike that is strong and built to take abuse and i am confident that this bike will... and has so far.
specs show that rear 9spd. cassette is an 11-34 but it came 11-32. will have to work out details with bike shop about this.
Similar Products Used:voodoo canzo, raleigh m-80,
Bike Setup:stock, except for toe clip pedals...soon to get clipless pedals and shoes.
Bottom Line:if you are on the big and tall end of the spectrum, and you want a bike that isn't going to self destruct when hammering thru the trails and over hills, this bike is for you. tested and rode some of the more "respected" brands in and above this price range and while some were lighter and some felt more nimble, i would feel more secure bombing down a gas well road @ 40 mph on my 10 yr old raleigh than on some of those bikes....they just didn't give me the same rugged feeling as this 2009 response comp did.

those that are worried about how many grams their shoelaces weigh or need a $2000+ super race hardtail need not apply.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $320.00
Purchased At:Dicks Sporting Goods
Strengths:Frame, geometry, materials
Weaknesses:pedals,
Similar Products Used:specialized hardrock, Giant Boulder SE, Trek
Bike Setup:Stock with added accessories, (Topeak Rack, bar ends, computer, lights, set up for commuting)
Bottom Line:1st of all this is a $300 bike. I find it amusing when people spend $300 on a bike then write a review complaining because it is not as good as a $2000 Felt. For $300 this bike is pretty solid. It is basically a hardrock specialized sport. Both bikes have the same components Shimano Acera, The only difference is the specialized has a splined bb and the Diamondback has a square taper bb. The forks on this bike are ok not great but adequate. Diamondback usually has one level higher components than its competitors in each price range. I compared this bike against the Giant Boulder, and a trek. The trek and the Giant felt cheap compared to this. This bike feels solid. I have it set up for commuting, but occasionally go off-road on trails and Rail Trails. It holds up well. Well worth $300. It is a simple but strong bike. If you do not know what you are doing I would recommend buying this from a Bike store instead of a sports chain.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Dicks Sporting Goods
Strengths:Frame and components, it is a nimble and well-priced entry bike with SO MUCH MORE. I have beat on this bike for going on 4 years now, and it keeps asking for more. It's showing some age, but still is mechanically sound.
Weaknesses:I wish it had Disc Brakes and sometimes shifting isn't as smooth as others, but after 4 years of hard riding, it has taken its share of abuse. But, if it had been equipped with disc brakes, I wouldn't have been able to afford it, so the V Brakes are fine.
Similar Products Used:Trek 4300, 4500, Giant Sedona
Bike Setup:Stock except for added Wellgo Clipless pedals a while back, aside from that it's just like it was off the showroom floor
Bottom Line:Bottom line, this bike has been a great one for me. I have nothing but good things to say about Diamondback and the Response. I have ridden it hard for years and always tried to keep it clean and well maintained, and it's always ready for more.
Earlier this spring I had a pretty rough wreck on it, had to bend the left thumb shifter down to make it usable again, but it's 100% now that it's all corrected.
You won't be disappointed with this bike.

Purchased At:Used for exercise, no jumps or anything crazy
Strengths:Strong frame, nice stock tires and rims, gives a good smooth ride. Like the ride height and feel of the handlebars.
Weaknesses:Flimsy plasticy pedals. Easy to replace though. Other than that, everything is fine for street riding to dirt paths.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Good solid bike if you're not looking to go off 20 foot high cliffs or do anything crazy. I use mine for street riding and some off pavement stuff, mainly exercise. If you want a rugged bike that can handle the curbes and potholes of street riding ,and dirt paths on occasion, this is a perfect pick. I love the electric lime green frame with blacked out accessories that mine has too. Looks sharp and handles itself well.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Dicks Sporting Goods
Strengths:Solid Frame, and light enough to move through the trails, and negotiate rocks. Good gear system
Weaknesses:Stock crank is not strong, stock tires do not handle mud well. Poor traction on rocks
Similar Products Used:IornHorse Warrior, other Dimondbacks
Bike Setup:Front suspension rear hardtail
Bottom Line:Its a great beginner bike, but i noticed as I stepped up my level of riding I need to make a few modifications. I need to put in a stronger more responsive crank, also, it needs metal pedals. I'm due to break those plastic ones. I have owned the bike for 3 years now, but I just recently got into what I purchased it for. I can certainly keep up with my friends on their $500 and $600 setups. I prefer the hardtail over the full suspension system. I feel like I'm more in control of the bike.

Bottom Line:Not bad for the cost. priced allot of bikes in this catagory and the bottom line is this is a great deal. even better brands come with weak parts. its all a question of how much you want to pay at any given time. there nothing wrong with buying and up grading as you go. plus it keeps things interesting and to see the change is always a plus.

Strengths:Best every bang for the buck. Great Components, strong breaking power, nice X-7 shifters and X-7 Rear Derailer, comfortable on long road trips
Weaknesses:A little heavier than i would like. Avid Ball Bearing 5 just squeals once in a while.
Bottom Line:This review is for
:::::::::::: Diamondback Response Comp ::::::::::
I have used it on many mountain bike trails and it has been holding up great so far except for squealing breaks and a bit heavy on the frame side. Even though the specification on the website said that the rear dereailler was X-5, i got an X-7 with the bike from the manufacturer. Great SRAM, AVID and Truvatic components for the money. Its got a nice seat and forks that hold up really good on hard terrains. It is also great for long rides using slicks.

Well, I just have to say, that It was in the shop 2 weeks out of the month that I had it. Derailler's, chain, crank, and front brake, all broke or did not work correctly.

Luckily, I was able to return and upgrade to a different bike. Ive read some reviews here about the Diamondback Apex and ordered that. Hopefully it works out. I would only recommend this for ppl just wanting to ride recreationally at moderate paces.

Price Paid: $355.00
Strengths:Very reliable, comfortable for long road trips, very strong frame, good shocks, surprisingly powerfull brakes (better stopping than some disc brakes I have tried) Looks great.
Weaknesses:a slightly better seat would be the only thing
Similar Products Used:Peugeot, Rocky Mountain
Bike Setup:when I bought it, I only replace the front tire with a less knobby tire because I like to take fast corners on pavement.
Bottom Line:My alien green Response has been a great travelling companion. I have ridden the streets of Paris, Manhattan, Montreal, Prague, Munich, London. Also rode from Paris to Cannes. Its a great bike for city riding while also being a very capable off roader. Living in downtown Toronto, this bike is great for commuting mainly due to its great acceleration, great handling, and excellent stopping power.
Down a hill (on pavement)I hit 84 km/h and the bike was very stable and was able to come to a rapid stop with ease. Its a comfortable bike for long trips and its a bike you can trust because mine has never given me problems. Off road its great, the shocks do their job, I have no fear of taking on the most brutal trails out there. I have now clocked over 4300 km and still wearing the original Kenda tire in the rear, and the cheap $4 made in China Diamnd Brand tire that I put on the front still has enough tread for another 1500km of riding. I have ridden bikes costing 4 times as much and they perform only 10% better. Its a great value for someone who wants a good bike without paying too much.

Strengths:If you have been out of the biking scene for awhile like I was and want to ride while checking out all the new technologies and reviews, this is the perfect ride.
Weaknesses:Low end components. But they do the job assigned to them. As a short term ride, I really have no complaints.
Bike Setup:While I am narowing my decision down to an Epic Marathon or a one of the new Treck Fuels, on the DB I have switched over to a WTB Laser saddle, M959 pedals, Thompson Elite stem and seat post, Azonic riser bar and played aound with the tires, swapping out the Velociraptors to Weirwolfs and now some Mutanoraptors. Also threw on some Cool Stop pads.
Since I didn't spend a lot on the front end, I have been able to play around with the components, fighuring out what I like and what I don't. For me, when I'm not riding, I like to tweak things.
Bottom Line:This has been a fun, trouble free bike. I'll do 20 miles in a typical ride which can be a mix of a grinding uphill fire road with some singletrack on the way down. It has afforded me the time to make an informed choice for my ultimate ride.
If you are just getting back into the MB scene, this is a great way to go if you are not sure what you want in FS set-up.
