Favorite Trail:Soumi Hills
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $55.00
Purchased At:Price Point
Strengths:Easy entry/exit, clears mud easily, simple design, easy on knees.
Weaknesses:Poor quality inboard seals.
Similar Products Used:Wellgo SPD clones.
Bike Setup:03' Tassajara disc, Bike E recumbent.
Bottom Line:Great pedal for the money for road or light XC riding. I plan on rebuilding the Cs and keeping them on the recumbent and upgrading to SIs on the hard tail.
I would not hesitate to recommend these pedals for road use but they are not durable enough for trail riding from my experience.

Weaknesses:Takes some getting use to to clip out.
Similar Products Used:CB Mallet C.
Bike Setup:Trek 4500 Hard Tail, Rock Shock Dart3.
Bottom Line:Awsome Pedals for the Money. If you are a first time cyclist and want a great set of pedals to learn on, these are the ones. You have 4 entry points instead of 2 like all the others. I recommend spending 15 to 20 minutes clipping in and out before you go riding, just so you get use to it,

Date Reviewed: June 9, 2009
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $80.00
Purchased At:somewhere online
Strengths:durable!, low maitenance, doesn't get clogged with mud, light, simple
Similar Products Used:shimano something
Bike Setup:SJ FSR
Bottom Line:I've ridden the same pair of Eggbeaters for at least four years. I chose these pedals when I was just staring out because they seemed like they'd clear mud more easily and seemed more durable. I orginally had Shimanos. Shimanos were always clogged with mud, difficult clip in and out, and eventually broke the first year.

I picked up a pair of these four years ago and and I am now a lifetime lover of CBs. They made it through a lot of rock bashing, sloppy riding, and crashes in the early years and always came out like a champ. One pedal finally broke a few weeks ago when one of the eggbeater tines just snapped off during a ride. I think four years is a pretty good run, esp. for something that has taken such a beating. So, I'm shopping for a new pair.

Favorite Trail:The one with no one in front of me ;o)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:Various
Strengths:Lightness, simplicity, performance in mud, ease of use, strength, customer service, look cool, road and off road pedals interchangeable
Weaknesses:Less good bearings on the cheaper models - but then what do you expect.
Similar Products Used:Various Shimano clip ins
Bike Setup:Giant Trance Advanced 1 - stock setup. SRAM/Race Face/Hayes Stroker Trail/Mavic X317 on DT Swiss/Nevgal Tomac DTC Front, Nevegal Stick-E rear, Crank Brothers Egg Beaters, Stans (OK this bit's not stock)
Bottom Line:For me these pedals are great. I've used them for several years and have variations of them egg beater/candy/quattro on all my bikes (6) so I can ride any bike in any pair of shoes - though the road shoes look pretty silly on a mountain bike!

I certainly haven't had the problems other people have reported with too much float or a lack of security. If your shoes aren't stiff enough then the egg beaters can be a bit harsh on your feet, but with a half decent pair of shoes then this isn't a problem.

When I first got them I must admit I had a few sketchy unclipping moments. They are definitely not quite the same as shimano's and maybe you need to relearn the technique a little bit, but now they never give me any problems and I have never had problems clipping in - even in really muddy conditions.

In short they go in when I want, come out when I want (and when I crash!) and don't come out when I don't want them to - something that was definitely an occasional problem with the Shimano's.

Favorite Trail:Little Blakley - Syllamo
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $90.00
Purchased At:Arkansas Cycling
Strengths:Simplicity
Weaknesses:Have not found any yet.
Bike Setup:Fisher HiFi 29er
Bottom Line:Ditto the complaining. I've had the same pair (stainless steel) for at least 4 years with no complants. I used a pair of SPD's that come on my 1st 29er for a couple of weeks then switched back to the egg beaters. They are so much easier to get in and out of. About the only time I've ever come out of them is when I have come down hard on a rock and then I just clipped back in with hardly any hesitation. Have not had any problem pulling out of them either. I hardly ever clean them except with a water hose. I did put a repair kit in them about a year and a half ago. It was so easy. However, after 4 years or so of hard riding they are finaly getting wore out and a little loose so I am replacing them with the SL's again. The SL's have a much better sealed bearing than the SC's, C's or MXR's. I don't know, maybe I just got an excellent made one but I'm putting my money on another excellently made one.

Bottom Line:you guys that complain about engage/disengagement problems are not taking the time to read the instructions, you adjust the rotation of the cleat for entry exit issues and/or use the provided shims to solve the sole tread clearance problems ...READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.I have a pair of the 1st gen eggbeaters that I still use and attribute the durability to proper maintainence and not using the pedals for jumping off cliffs...they are not intended for that. These pedals are getting a bad rap for no good reason,I love crank bros pedals, and will use no other.

Weaknesses:Fragile
Similar Products Used:Scott Twin Cam and Crank Brothers Candy SL
Bike Setup:Stock Gary Fisher HiFi Deluxe 29er
Bottom Line:I love the Crank Brother's pedal design. They are easy to get into and out of quickly. Plus, they shed mud like a champ. Unfortunately, I broke my pedals after 4-5 rides. Thankfully, Crank Brother's honored their 1 year warranty and even allowed me to pay the difference on an upgrade to Candy SL's. BOTTOM LINE: These could be an excellent set of pedals for commuter riding, but If you plan on riding over logs / rocks buy Candies or Smarties instead.

Favorite Trail:Washing Machine
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $70.00
Purchased At:Bikes & Boards
Strengths:Say goodbye to mud clogs, easy in and out, firm engagement, fairly light.
Weaknesses:Haven't found any yet. People are claiming they are weak but I have not seen this. I'm pretty rough on my gear and these pedals have already been subjected to being banged on rocks and roots as I ride and I've taken a good amount of drops and landings to flat and still nothing.
Similar Products Used:Shimano SPD
Bike Setup:08 Felt Redemption 3, Marzocchi ATA 55, Fizik Gobi XM, Crank Bro's Eggbeater C's.
Bottom Line:I was hesitant to try these after riding SPDs for so long, but I will never go back now. These pedals are great. I like to have my pedals be easy to get in and out of. A weakness of the SPDs is that if you set them up this way you can occasionally slip out unintentionally or the engagement isn't as firm. I had no idea what I was missing with these. Not only is the entry and exit easy in a pinch, but the pedal engages very firm and you don't have to worry about slipping out. You'll also never have to worry about mud and the maintenance is low on them. If you haven't tried them, you're missing out!

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:on line
Strengths:lightweight, clears mud well, lots o float, easy in and out.
Weaknesses:inner bushings
Similar Products Used:shimano spds of various vintages
Bike Setup:yeti 575 set up for epic xc rides. hayes, xtr, truvative, bontrager race disc wheels, original fox susp. pieces.
Bottom Line:great pedal design but inner bushings wear out in about a season causing alot of play and putting extra stress on outer bearings. ( and yes I clean and regrease them frequently, which by the way is easy). more expensive eggbeaters may have better inner bushing or maybe even bearings ,i dont know. despite this weakness i would recomend them (I buy new ones every year). If youre a cross country rider these will work well for you. If you huck your bike off alot of stuff you may want something with a bit of platform.

Bottom Line:if you want higher quality get the "S" model, which appears to have 1 pc. forged wings. Or you can buy two pairs of "C"'s for the same price. For the highest performance:price ratio you can get, the stamped steel construction of the "C" is hard to beat

Bike Setup:06 Cannondale Scalpel 1000
Bottom Line:Functionally, I love the pedals. They work perfect... until they break. I bent the right spindle and broke off a wing on the first set. I chalked it up to me being too rough and ordered another set (can't beat the price). The wings separated on the left side on the 2nd set to where I was completely unable to clip in. Luckily, I was able to replace it with my undamaged left pedal from set #1. Now a wing on the right pedal has developed a crack. Functionally, they are a great pedal. Just spring for the better material. I think the low bottom bracket of my scalpel doesn't help the situation.

Price Paid: $99.00
Purchased At:Sunlight Cycles
Strengths:Great design with nothing to adjust
Weaknesses:Poor production on the C version
Similar Products Used:Original egg beater
Bike Setup:575
Bottom Line:I loved the original design which lasted me for a long time, but when I decided to "upgrade" to a new pair I have had nothing but problems. The C version is sloppy; poor production tolerances. I have had the spring slip out on one pedal so the egg beater went flat and I have broken two pedals where the wing meets the body. I love the design and would like to stay with it, but I would suggest getting the stainless version or better.

The other thing I have disliked is how the pedal ate in to my shoe, but I noticed on their web site that they now have steel plates to go under the cleat to address this issue.

I was disappointed when one of the wings broke off after only three months of use. Strengths:Light, strong, incredibly functional.
Weaknesses:I could use a *little* more float. Not a whole lot, but maybe 2 or 3 more degrees.
Similar Products Used:SPD M515, M545 other SPD pedals
Bike Setup:Specialized M4 w/Old school Z.1 X-fly fork with Magura Julie hydros, LX/XT components throughout.
Bottom Line:I've been an MTB rider/racer for over a decade and I've yet to find a better pedal.

The best of the best USED to be the Time ATAC World Champion followed up by the XTR SPD's.

This has changed with the advent of the egg beater. The 'C' model is on the lower end of the quality spectrum for this line, but you wouldn't know it by riding them.

Amazing strength, VERY dependable and not at all easy to engage or release the cleat. I'd definitely recommend these to other riders.

Price Paid: $55.00
Purchased At:REI
Strengths:Durability, looks, COMPLETELY UN-CLOGGABLE, lots of float, engages from any side
Weaknesses:Unrideable without clipless shoes. I know that's the point but if you lose a cleat on the trail you're stuck. It's going to be an uncomfortable ride out, ESPECIALLY if you're climbing out.
Similar Products Used:Platforms
Bike Setup:Jamis Dakar, eggbeaters, Thomson stem, Monkeylite bars, BB5's, Truvativ FireX
Bottom Line:Pedals have been awesome for me. All 4 wings are still on each pedal. I ride pretty rocky rooty trails 4 to 5 times a week and they've had their fair share of hard slams on rocks that I misjudged. Other people have had problems with durability but I really haven't had any issues. They haven't even ever clipped out on me when they hit stuff. Tight enough that they'll never let go while you're riding but lose enough to be easy on the knees and easy to get out of in a hurry if needed. Cleats seem to last. I've never had to replace the cleats or bolts. Granted I've only had them about 6 months but I ride nearly every day so they definitely get used.

Great pedals, weight isn't really an issue to me with pedals, they aren't noticeable they just do the job they're there for. LOVE EM!

Also easy to take your foot our if there is a need for. I'm rather easy rider and so far did less than 100 miles with them but I'm very, very pleased with results.
