Favorite Trail:Ashwheelot trail.
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $80.00
Purchased At:Belmont wheelworks,
Strengths:Good design, very nice appearance.
I appreciate any nicely cut CNC components.
BIG platform.
Weaknesses:Extremely poor execution. Under engineered, cheap grease washed right out. Too few set screws for grip.
Bent spindles in 3 weeks.
Similar Products Used:None this shoddy.
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher RIG 29er SS Hard tail.
RS REBA front shock
Velocity BLUNT, White Industries wheels
Schwalbe Big Apple tires
BB7 Mech disc brakes
Cane Creek Thudbuster seat post.
Hellbent TiTech bars
Dinotte 200W light
ODI Intense locking grips.
Bottom Line:For the cost of these pedals, they should be sealed bearings first and foremost, second, the spindle is bent already, both pedals. Don't they know the average weight of a rider has increased 40lbs the last decade and the skill levels and boundaries of riding have expanded? Well, now they do.
Unless they use titanium for spindles, I don't see this product being combat worthy.
I did manage to rebuild them myself fairly easy. A dental pick and a set of long tweezers really helped with the 26 tiny bearings. After cleaning everything up, I repacked the bearing cups with some high end synthetic grease, carefully tweezed the bearings back into place and screwed everything back into place. I adjusted the play in the spindle, then thread locked the lock washer and nut on tight. There was no more slop, spun nice and free. BUT the spindles are still bend .050" at least.
I will be machining up some titanium spindles myself this winter and maybe even design a sealed bearing set up.
Also, ordering a box of 8-36 3/8" set screws for more grip.
Bottom line is, there are definitely better buys, but if you have the time and/or skills, they can be rebuild.

Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:Bass Pro Shops
Strengths:Looks cool I guess and multiple anodized colors. Maybe the fact that you can take them apart. Decent size platform for bigger feet. (I'm really trying to come up with something)
Weaknesses:Slippery, pins are a joke - they offer no grip. Threads are too stiff, you think you might be stripping them but your not.
Way over priced, and not worth the almost %50 off I got them for. Flat instead of slightly concave.
Similar Products Used:Shimano, Wellgo and Mirraco m3gas pedal
Bike Setup:Motobecane Fantom Elite DS
Bottom Line:Almost anything else is better, I would rather run stock no namers, maybe better than plastic. I think flat platform pedals with pins should attract the rubber of your shoe, not send it away with ease. Worthless if you are looking for something to really stick your feet when pedaling hard, uphill, or landing some air. Might as well slap a couple of wet bars of soap to your cranks, you might get better grip than these.

Saw them on clearance, thought I'd give a try even though there not very well reviewed. Used them once took them back.
Should of trusted the reviews and avoided these.

Strengths:- They are easily the best looking pedals going
- Main axle quite strong
- Reasonable grip when dry
Weaknesses:Hmmm... where do I start?
Well, when they were brand spankin I was on the way to my local trail, riding on the road when i noticed that one of the side plates had come loose. So I pulled over to realise that the bolts that hold the plates on had completely lost their head - just sheered off! Had to fix it with a zip-tie, and this was way stronger! I had to purchase some new bolts, and even these almost dethreaded the totally soft alloy pedals!

About three rides later I noticed that they were making a funny creaking noise so i decided to give em a service. Its here I noticed that one pedal had 6 more balls than the other one - nothing can surprise me now! Anyway I thought, I just went on giving them a really good service. As I assembled them I then noticed that the outer hex bolt had completely stripped its thread - so I had to buy another one!!!
Similar Products Used:Specialized platforms, Wellgo MG1's, Holzfeller..
Bike Setup:Custom Reign
Bottom Line:What else can I say, but don't buy these pedals. I think that they are truly the worst product I have ever bought. All the metals used bar the axle/spindle are totally weak/too soft. The workmanship is totally rubbish (the plates dont sit flush on the pedal for example, uneven bearings etc). In addition - they damn heavy.. 630 grams for soft pieces of crap!!! Come on Crank Bros - WTF??? I use their Multi tool and its a work of art - thats why I bought these pedals, but these are absolutely rubbish. Like another poor soul mentioned, im not even gonna sell these cos I actually think that they are dangerous.

Im gonna buy a set of Wellgo's: light, cheap, durable and they do what their suppose to!

Weaknesses:After about 2 months of riding there is a ton of play side to side, up and down where the pedals are connected to the cranks. huge creak every turn of the cranks, the pedals were shot after about 2 months riding...
Similar Products Used:Im gonna stick with cheap-quality pedals, wellgo/oddessy

Bottom Line:I originally wanted these pedals because they had the huge pins, large platform, and sweet color/design. Weaknesses:Durability.

Bike Setup:Iron Horse Kumicho Type R.
Bottom Line:These pedals worked great for about a week, then I did a DH race during some moderately wet conditions and they self destructed. One pedal had notable bearing play and the other would barely spin. Made horrible creaking noises too. They were just totally thrashed. To prove that it's not just me, I have been running the same set of $28 Odyssey twisted flats for over 4 years on a series of bikes without any problems.

They gripped well though. . .

To their credit, CB sent me a set of warranty pedals which will be going on ebay so it wasn't a total bust.

SADDLE: T.H.E DH saddle
Bottom Line:I bought the pedals as i have seen many pro riders also using crankbrothers 50-50 pedals, but now i have figured out they might be using 50-50XX or some tweaked version.
Well, When i ordered these pedals, Right pedal was slightly tight from the shaft when i got it brand new. I thought as its brand new it might become fine after 2-3 rides, but in less than a year, the problem became worse, and that pedal was almost jammed. And funny thing the left pedal was shaking as if its gonna come out.
I live in India, and there is no dealer/distributor for these items, so i emailed crankbrothers and they told that they can warranty the pedals, so i had to ship the pedals to them ( expensive deal for me beause of international shipping) So i hope they give me new replacement. So far their service has been good. I will write review again once i recieve them.

Weaknesses:Poor grip, compared to other flat pedals, while wearing 5.10s. Very slippery while wearing Vans.
Needed to tighten the plates after first ride. This surprised me.
Bearings needed service after a few rides. The seal near the spindle appears thin as paper. I can't believe a seal that thin keeps out much dirt, dust, water....

Bottom Line:the pedals i now use for flats are burgtech penthouse flats, and slipped i use mallet 3's, both superb pedals, a billion times stronger/ better than 5050s. the gryb screws fall out of 5050s and with them come the plates, eventually you have to buy a new set of plates or screws, and your better off buying 1 piece flats to start with.

im giving 1 because they started going wrong after 1 ride down the fort william course, never buying the same pedals again, save money and buy a 1 piece design. shame on you crank bros, i aint buying a crank brother flat pedal again

Poor quality assembly

Bottom Line:I really like the looks of these pedals and their grip was decent after installing new pins with loctite. I just can't recommend them. The stock pins are too short for good grip and are installed with a small amount of loctite. I lost 3 pins in the first week of riding on pavement. One pedal body came off of the spindle 30 minutes into my first off road ride without ever being struck on anything.

Crank Brothers support has been OK. They sent some more stock pins after I initially lost some and they are currently fixing the broken pedal.

Strengths:Pretty Gripy out of the box, easy install, good customer supper by crank brothers.
Weaknesses:Falls apart! The alien screws that held the pedals together came out complete on one side of the pedal, and for some reason mine came with fully threaded pegs that were great until they just un-threaded themselves loose and I lost a handful of them.

Bottom Line:Crank brothers 50/50x's were junk, they worked/felt well for awhile then they gradually started feeling like my stock pedals - they fell apart on me so I sold them off with one of my bikes after I replaced all the missing parts. The only plus to these pedals was the Crank Brothers Co. support, they sent me some replacement screws and pegs for free after I contacted them via email.

Strengths:great looking, solid traction, well built
Weaknesses:not enough traction with the stock pins, set screws came loose on first ride
Bottom Line:I love these pedals. I ordered the longer pins and traction has been fantastic. The set screw came loose on the first ride and I lost four of them. Was very bummed. Sent an email to Crank Brothers and they immediately sent me replacement pins at no charge. I was completely impressed with the customer service. Definitely do a little lock-tite on the set screws, and if you are riding it wet or slop, go for the longer pins. For the price (including the longer pins), great peddle, solid traction, no problems with bearings (been using them in the winter muck...) I definately recommend these, especially with the customer support I received.

Strengths:Great overall design, serviceable, great performance, replaceable pins. Pins are threaded in so you are free to replace the factory pins with a different hight pin or add/remove pins to fit your riding style.
Weaknesses:Replaceable pins. Had to reapply red industrial strength loctite in the first week. Main spindle bearings were a bit sloppy out the factory and had to tighten up the left petal prior to using it.

However, great thing about serviceable petals is you can service them.
Similar Products Used:Other one piece downhill/freeride/urban petals
Bike Setup:Lower profile hardtail with more urban setup, but can still perform great on single-tracks in more cross-country style riding.
Bottom Line:Despite the initial problems I had on first few times out, I love these petals for my style of riding and they are great for their intended purpose! If you want a great freeride/urban or even cross-country petal you can service and customize, these are a great choice! Just buy a small bottle of red-industrial strength loctite to accompany them. :)

If you are looking for a petal to slap on and never want to mess with or service till you want to replace them, then perhaps this petal is not for you. Buy a one piece molded petal and you'll be happier.

Seems shoe choice is also making a different as a hard-soled shoe doesn't grip as well as softer more flexible shoe. Something to think about, but this might be how all flat petal perform.

Bottom Line:This is a long term review update for the CB 50/50X. I've hammered these pedals for 1 1/2 plus seasons at the Mammoth Mtn Bike Park 3-4days a week. They are holding up well and the wide platform provides an excellent base for freeride/dh assuming you replace the short pins. By design, most of the punishment inflicted on the 50/50's occurs on the plates. I expect long use out the pedal because I can replace the plates and the pins easily for a reasonable price.

I think the wide, low profile design of the pedals along with the replaceable plates makes the maintenance hassles worth it. I recommend these pedals to anyone riding flats in dry conditions.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $60.00
Purchased At:Blue Sky
Strengths:Looks good, holds up well, sturdy, and I haven't had any lost pin problems. Also has very good traction in dry weather.
Weaknesses:It is a mud magnet. It is flat out dangerous in wet conditions.
Similar Products Used:None. Only beaters and beartraps.
Bike Setup:gt 5 2.0. XT'd out. Rotate slicks and knobs as warranted.
Bottom Line:Fantastic pedal for dry use. When it gets wet or muddy I lose all confidence. I have no idea if I'll be pedaling with, or landing on my feet, shins or calves. My experience is that it is great for dry trials, however, worthless otherwise.
I don't know how to rate this pedal. It's great if you play to it's strength.

Strengths:good traction in dry conditions, looks
Weaknesses:the little screws that anchor the removable plates to the body always come loose and the plates slide out. i had to email crankbrothers to get replacement pins cuz local shops dont have em. and they pretty much have no traction in wet conditions
Similar Products Used:wellgo, dangerboy
Bike Setup:sasquatch, 66, rest stock
Bottom Line:i havethese pedals on my hardtail and they arnt that bad but i wouldnt recommend getting them unless they come stock on a new bike. it sucks having to check them before and after every ride to see if you lost the screws though. even if u wear flat soled shoes like skate shoes or somthin they still wont do u any good in wet conditions. i give a 2 value rating cuz i wouldnt buy them alone.

Bike Setup:Reign X1
Bottom Line:I put these on my wifes bike (bought new a couple of weeks ago) before a vacation in Moab. Riding down Porcupine Rim, three of four of the silver plates came off. I am sure the pedals took some abuse on the ride, but I certainly expect better performance from a pedal made by Crank Bros. I will replace them with one piece units.

Although the design looks good with these plates keyed to the pedal body top and bottom, there is obviously load going into the two little screws causing them to fail.

Wheels : Atomlab Trail Pimps (07) 36H
Thomson "Jump" Stem
Easton DH MonkeyLites
Bottom Line:The bottom line is these pedals are truly amazing for DJ /Urban. I love the low profile..

I wish people wouldn't "flame" these pedals..I have read their reviews and notice that they are using them for a purpose they weren't made for..seriously..

Plus! Did you ever think of wearing a "skate" shoe with these pedals? It would help you 1000 X's sense they hook up with any flat pedal nicely..

So stop complaining!

Weaknesses:DO NOT use in wet conditions.
Bike Setup:stock C`Dale F300
Bottom Line:Good pedal if used in dry condtions. In the wet, your feel will slide all over them. I got many compliments on the pedals from time to time. One of the pedals lost all the plate screws and the bearings got messed up, I contacted CB and after I sent them the broken pedal, they sent me a new one, no questions asked. Then I lost more plate screws, I once again contacted them and they sent me a bag of about 10 of them without any problem. Very good customer service, very quick to respond and very helpful.

Similar Products Used:alloy platform
Bike Setup:Trek 4300, SID fork, Sun Rhyno Lites with Specialized treads, and these nice looking Crank Brothers 5050x pedals
Bottom Line:I would recommend them. They are a strong solid pedal, for extra grip get the longer pins for $10. definately worth it if you take the time to take the pedals apart and put in the new pins. You can also customize the colors for these too.

Thats what these pedals are ment for, and thats what they should be used for. In conclusion, I give these pedals 5 chillies!!

Strengths:flash looks
novel design
Weaknesses:provides NO traction
does not have a concave platform
Similar Products Used:mostly clipless
Bike Setup:I have ridden the CB 5050s on a steel hard tail and a 5X4 FS.
Bottom Line:Mangled ankle forced me to give up clipless.
Read in the mags these were good.
So I got em and rode em.
Didnt matter if it was wet or dry, what shoes I was wearing, or if I put all the pins on one side - when pedaling with the ball of my foot centered over the axel my feet ALWAYS slip off.
Figured flats just suck and tried to go back to clipless. which didnt work out.
Got desperate and swaped them for the $12 flats from my commuter. Made all the difference.
Even around town on the commuter my foot slips off the 5050s.
Basically if you look at the center of these pedals you will notice a raised area where the axel resides. I think this is the problem, not that the pins are too short.
I good concience I cant even give these away.

Strengths:nicely constructed, well engineered....brain dead loose bearings make for easy re-greasing when needed....
Weaknesses:slippery as hell..........the pyramid shaped pins are just a bad idea...the pins are wider at the bottom and taper to the standard witdt at the top, but this is not ideal for gripping a shoe
Similar Products Used:Tioga MX Pro, cheap wellgo clones, misc crap platforms
Bike Setup:Turner 5-spot, Surly 1x1 singlespeeder....
Bottom Line:if it weren't for the sucky pins, these pedals would be nice....I gottem for winter riding, but I might have well bought ice-skates - they are very wormy and squirmy in winter riding conditions - and I've used my beyond grippy 5-Ten Impact gummy rubber shoes with them for the ultimate grip test - they fail.....

I'm probably going to throw them on my Kona Bike-Hot-Rod, just because these pedals look bad-ass~!

If you want a pedal that works, just order up another pair of Tioga MX Pro's, just what I'm going to do after I get done typing this - you can find them online for 55-65 bux these days, and they are the absolute best for the bux...

crank bros's? yeah, crank this!

Bottom Line:The pins are worthless. That alone wouldn't be so bad because you can take the pedal apart and upgrade them. So I decided to do so except the screws that hold the pedal together are loctite-ed and the allen heads stripped out. After spending an afternoon working on my brand new pedals......well there way too many good cheap platform pedals out there.

Bottom Line:The 50/50 has a nice wide platform with a curved shape that keeps your feet on the pedals. The pedal incorporates a clever design that allows for easy replacement of pins. The pins are unscrewed from underneath the pedal.

The only problem with the 50/50X is that the stock pins are way too short. The longer pins which come with the more expensive 50/50XX work great. I would recommend the accessory upgrade. Crank Bros. please put the longer pins on the 50/50X!

Strengths:Good looking pedal. Seems to be of good quality/strength. Ability to change/customize pins.
Weaknesses:Stock pins are too short. Doesnt grip as well as expected/hoped. Long pin kit would probably fix that but thats even more $$$. Made in China?? ugh. Pedal is a little too big. Could have done away with some size/weight.
Bike Setup:Cannondale Jekyll 500
Avid BB7 disc brakes/levers
Push'd Fox float R
etc
Bottom Line:I decided on these because I also do a lot of commuting on my bike to work, gym, etc. I need to be able to ride with any type of shoe and still have sufficient grip in all weather conditions. I am a little disappointed.
If you insist on these pedals go for the XX as they include the long pin kit amongst other upgrades. However I'd suggest looking at other pedals (cheaper/better?).

the allen heads are on the underside of the plate so if you bash em off a rock the heads wont fold in.

all in all these pedals are relly cool looking and i would reccomend them to a free rider or a downhiller if they put the long pin set in. i will post a follow up add when iv used my new set for a while and tell how there doing.
