Date Reviewed: June 30, 2009
Favorite Trail:flat dirt
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $10.00
Purchased At:local dump store
Strengths:This is by far the best available. So when I found them on sale for only $10 I bought a couple of them to fit out all my bikes and have some spare.
Best strength is the info cycle: dist>triptime>avg . That's all I need when cycling. Another one is the option to set avg etc to the large display.
And I do like the positioning of the button, it makes it easy to just grip the computer, rather than positioning your finger on a top-button while driving a bumpy road.
Weaknesses:No holder for stem-mount. Is sold seperately but could have been a dual function mount. No backlight.
Similar Products Used:The first ever cateye, sigma , velo-5
Bike Setup:a couple of them
Bottom Line:With ongoing 'improvements' in cycling computers I wonder who actually designs these things .. there is not one out there I know of that lets me program what info is displayed, and in what order. Or an option to automatically return to one. Pressing a button while riding is distracting and troublesome. So why do I have to cycle through items I don't need ( who needs to see odo during a trip ... ).
The mity-3's minimalistic setup is great. It is not ideal, there are some wishes left, but it is a lot better than the current models.
And that's the bottem line: for $10 there is no better buy, and there are still a lot of them out there on dusty shelfs in the back of the store. Buy it!

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $20.00
Strengths:Good price, reliable and durable. Totaly waterproof. Many functions and good, clear display (easy to customize). Setting it up can be a bit confusing at the beginning but is actually quite easy (just RTFM...). The sectional distance function is precise and REALLY cool - saved me lots of time when navigating by the map.
Weaknesses:No backlight. Well, for me it is not a big deal. After dark I am usually riding back so... - maybe better not to calculate how far it is :)
Bike Setup:Wheeler 3600. Sort of "long distance cross country" - the tires are large AND wide (700 and 43C). Shimano rapidfire shifters and STX.
Bottom Line:I am actually writting this review because recently I accidentaly dropped my Cateye from the fifth floor. It hit the concret below, the battery lid opened and I had to find the battery itself - it rolled quite far. When I put it back and set the values - MITY was working perfectly ok!
I never had the wire problem some people mentioned, even though I often ride offtrail through dense forests - but I don't do regular downhill.

Favorite Trail:yonge street
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $17.00
Purchased At:MEC
Strengths:Works, long battery life, seems to be accurate, computer itself is durable (unlike Vettas which kept dying on me). I think I've had it about 5 years.
Weaknesses:Setting it to kilometres sets it to 24 hour time, buttons harder to press while riding than computers with top mount buttons, on long boring flat straight sections of road I obsess over the mileage and feel like I'm not going anywhere (but I try to avoid those).
Similar Products Used:Vetta, other Cateyes, an old Avocet, dead reckoning
Bike Setup:One speed, no coasting
Bottom Line:People comment on the durability of the wiring harness... which is definitely better for road bikes. The computer itself seems to be similar (the same?) to the Enduro that's recommended, and can use the same wiring harness. It also has a dual wheel size option so you can use it on more than one bike. So I bought the cheaper computer, put it on my road bike, and got the heavy duty Enduro wiring replacement kit for my mountain bike bike. Just so you know that's an option.

Purchased At:aebike.com
Strengths:It is CCateye Mity 8. Cool design and multi function. Price!!!
Weaknesses:fragile. Because of my front shock, the wire can not be tightened securely that the cable kept hitting the wheel and makes noise.
Bike Setup:K2 Proflex 5000 frame, Fox Talus front, Noleen Rear shock, XT Component.
Bottom Line:I purchased Cateye Mity 8 paying only $20.00, thought it was a great deal. With a light crash, the cable broke on me that no information is shared between the sensor and the computer. I have to buy a new one.

Bike Setup:Lemond "Buenos Aires" with gel saddle and gel grip tape, Michelin kevlar tires set at 115psi air pressure. >>For dirt...Specialized "Rockhopper Comp FSRxc" with Avid disc brakes.

Favorite Trail:Any 'polder' trail: bicycle paths through flatlands
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $28.00
Purchased At:Halfords
Strengths:A lot of functions; easy to control when you take some time to study the manual; weatherproof; it can be used for two different bikes, as you can program two wheel sizes in its memory.
Weaknesses:The start/stop button. If you're using manual start/stop, like I am, you always have to check the display to see whether having pressed the button has actually started/stopped the timer. This is really annoying when riding in the dark. A button that lights up the background for a second would solve this problem. Alternatively you could mount a small sort of torch light next to your computer, aimed at the display (these are in fact being sold somewhere).
However, if you're not going for speed but for distance, you can just turn the auto start/stop on and you won't have this problem.
Similar Products Used:Always Cateyes (CC7000, Velo 1, Velo 2, Mity 1, Mity 2)
Bike Setup:Koga Miyata Terraliner, Shimano Deore XT; and MBK race bike, Shimano 105.
Bottom Line:This is the best computer I've used so far, mainly because of the large number of functions. It might not be perfect for riding rough terrain, since pressing the buttons is difficult when your bike is dancing in all directions, but for smooth roads, especially in daylight, it's a very good buy.

Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:Pricepoint
Strengths:Looks good, easy to set up, cheap
Weaknesses:very fragile wire, hard to access max speed
Similar Products Used:cateye micro, ACT C-1, Vetta wireless, many others
Bike Setup:Amp B-4 w/sram 9.0 shifters and derailleur, Truvativ Stylo Crankset, Manitou Mars front shock, Avid SD7 brakeset, Chris King headset, LP braids bar and barends
Bottom Line:I wouldn't recommend this unit to most mountain bikers. I've used similar products with no problems, but I broke the fragile sensor wire on two separate occasions, and tossed it after the second time. It was easy to install, though, and it would probably be a good roadie computer. It was really cheap, I think because of the orange color. It was also harder than most other units to access the maximum speed. I bought a Sigma Sport Targa and I think it'll be much better. For the same money or slightly more you can get a far better unit than the Cateye.

Strengths:Good protection againt all weather conditions, own experience: +45,-20 Celsius, used in all months of the year.
Easy to use.
Weaknesses:none, about that wire; I still use (more than 3 years) the orginal wire and I have done a lot of extreme things with it. Just fix the wire good at your bike and nothing can happen. When you don't place the wire at a good way the wire could break also when it is thick.
Similar Products Used:pfff...I have tested a lot for one day the only differences between the bike pc's are the amount of functions and weather resistance.
Bike Setup:about my bike? It is a long distance bike made by Koga

Aero fork mount
Weaknesses:Not suitable for mountain bikes
Similar Products Used:Vetta
Bottom Line:Bought this unit to replace an old Vetta on my road bike. The aero fork mount works very well - setup was easy. This computer is great for road bikes, but I wouldn't use it for mtb's - the wire is much too fragile, even for rigid forks. Use the Enduro 2 instead - big, fat wire, same functionality.

Strengths:fairly easy to use, cheap, super reliable, apparently very water resistant
Weaknesses:the little clip breaks, small button came off after two and a half years
Similar Products Used:vetta (junk), avocet, old school paramount
Bike Setup:I use one on a mtb, another on a road bike
Bottom Line:I decided to write this because I accidentally dropped the one for my road bike into my dog's water bowl. It wasn't in there for long, but it dropped right in, bobbing around until I fished it out. I shook it out real good and it still works fine. The retaining clip did break on the original bracket, I replaced the bracket after the wire snapped in a crash. The two I have now still have their clips intact.
Also, the small button came off after almost three years. I can still reset it, but it's a little difficult.
I wouldn't look at anything else in this price range. Even if it has had problems, the others I've had have been much worse.

Strengths:Easy to use, easy to program, easy to install, easy to read. Computer itself is quite durable.
Weaknesses:Computer bracket has a little plastic tab that keeps the computer snapped into place. It is a bit flimsy and without too much effort easily broke off. The replacement bracket cost as much as the entire computer/bracket kit!
Bike Setup:Airborne Corsair, XT, SRAM, Truvativ, Avid, blah blah blah...
Bottom Line:An excellent down and dirty computer and an excellent buy - for the money. No complaints other than the aforementioned tab. I would recommend it to almost any one, just treat the bracket mount with a little TLC.

Price Paid: $14.00

Strengths:Keeps key stats with exception of cadence, fairly easy to install and program (if you know how to read)
Weaknesses:Noted above, no cadence, but for price at $14, I'm not complaining. Wires look thin, and since I jsut bought it, I can't comment on durability.
Similar Products Used:Cateye Enduro 2
Bike Setup:Bianchi Brava commuter bike setup
Bottom Line:I was originally looking for a cheap wireless system, but since most of those reviews were bad, I took a look at the Mity 3. I had never installed a computer so at first I was a little confused, but I took a 2nd read thru the instructions and then it was pretty easy. The cables don't get in the way at all.

The stats seem to be pretty accurate. I can look down when I'm hurting and see if I really am hurting or if it my imagination. I can also look down when I feel good and see that I'm slow as hell, which is why I feel good. And if I'm putzing too slowly, I can see that I'm speeding up.

Honestly though, that's all I bought it for, to give me some form of measurement vs. just how I feel that ride. For $14 and the other stats it keeps, this is a great deal.

If you want a reliable wireless system or cadence, you'll pay a good 3-4 times the price of this one.

Strengths:Easy to use. Comprehensive functions. Cool colors. Big display. Light.
Weaknesses:Fragile. As delicate as the first spring flower. No kidding. I have personally gone through FOUR of these things in two years. Each one has lasted approx. 10 rides. My brother went through three before giving up. He was breaking them on every other ride. Mostly the cord to the wheel sensor would snag, snap, or pull out of the unit. On the last one I purchased, the wires were not glued or sodered to the conecting posts on the bracket and so the sensor would never get picked up (unless you squeezed the unit in one hand to make the wire contact).

Date Reviewed: March 20, 2002
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:cheap, no nonsense functions.
Weaknesses:average speed can be weird
Bottom Line:Not a bad bike computer. You can get these for really cheap these days, like under $20. In fact, you might want to buy an extra one just to keep for spare parts. Overall, the Mity3 does everything you really need, albeit without cadence which few bike 'puters support anyhow. The buttons could have been placed better, and easier to press, but they do the job. The command structure is a bit strange at first, but once you ride a few hundred miles, the operation will be very easy. My real complaint is with the average speed calculation this computer uses; it's just somehow flawed. When I accelerate to a higher velocity, for instance, the average speed will drop. But once I slow down for a stop, the average speed jumps up. Clearly, something is wrong with the way it calculates the average speed. Thus, if you're training and using the mity for analysis, keep this in mind! No, this puter doesn't have a backlight, but quite frankly, I am glad it doesnt. Backlights eat up batteries faster than a hungry biker. I'm much happier having the battery last on me for a few years than a few months.

Strengths:Small, light, clear display
Weaknesses:Key sequences to access all function are rather complex
When I bought a second mounting kit for my road bike I found out later the wheel magnet is sold separately. Doh!
Bike Setup:Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike
Sunn Roader road bike
Bottom Line:Excellent device. Apart from some of the key sequences being somewhat somewhat complex (certainly not intuitive!) I have no complaints at all. This computer provides useful information, is clear to read and seems to cope with British weather pretty well. Battery life at least 3 years. Clock is not brilliantly accurate but that's about the only real criticism I can think of. If it provides the functions you need I'd strongly recommend it.

Weaknesses:cheap. sensor is cheap, magnety breaks easy. sometimes requires two handed operation (to reset).

Pacearrow (above or bellow av.)
Distance
Has three readouts
Dist1

Two wheel sizes

This comp is fairly easy to use with good navigation. functions are intuitively aranged, but i would say that all in all the two best things about thsi computer is the fact that it is so easily configurable; Each log function can be indivdually reset and the position of the displays changed ie:

Strengths:More functions than the mity 2.
Comes in Blue(looks more like purple), red, green...
Weaknesses:Not as user-friendly as before.
Buttons aren't that easy to use.
Similar Products Used:mity 1, mity 2, avocet C15
Bike Setup:got a few bikes...
Bottom Line:This is a computer to get if u want Cat-eye reliability and will make use of the functions. But u better be ok with the accessing of the functions, since it's not as straighforward as u think.

The mount for the computer is NOT compatible with mity 2 mounts, so don't plan on sharing the new mity 3 with your other bikes with old mity 2 mounts.

The buttons are on the bottom side of the computer. This also means that if the latch which secures the computer to the mount is damaged, or not secured properly, the computer can be launched off the rails like a rocket, since the direction the computer slides is in that way.

The buttons also don't seem as nice as the mity 2. the new buttons need to be pressed quite firmly to make sure, and they don't have a tactile *clik* sound. Kinda plastiky.

Functions wise, it has MXS, AVS, SPD, TM, Dual trip DST(1DST and 2DST), Programmable ODO, Clock, Dual Tire Sizes, Pace arrow(higher or lower than AVS). I would've bought the velo 2 if not for the absence of MXS on the V2, and the small price diff between the two. So, in terms of value between the two, I would choose the mity 3.

The rest of the hardware is still the same. Thin wires, same sensor, same magnet. But they all work well, no problems with that.

The accessing of the functions is the biggest difference between the old and new mity's(mities?). Basically, it works like the drop-down menus on your PC. To get to ODO, u have to go to 1DST, hold the mode button for a sec, then it will show u the 2DST, hold again then the ODO will appear. Same goes for AVS and MXS, TM and Clock, 1DST-2DST-ODO. U can't just press the mode button to cycle through all the functions. U have to remember which mode will go where. If possible, I would recommend that u cycle through the functions to see if u like it before u buy. I would still buy it if I were u, just that I don't really prefer it this way.

I think the digits are slightly larger than the mity 2. But seems a little narrow though. Overall, the display screen is ok.

There's a big "WATERPROOF" word on the outside of the box. I think that's a big mistake on Cat-eye's part. Once a product states that claim, people are gonna dunk it in mud water and leave it out in the rain everyday, and still expect it to work many years later. Don't do that! Take care of it and it will not fail u unexpectedly.

Of course, the instruction booklet is informative, but the layout is horrible. I normally read all the instructions that come with any product I buy thoroughly, but this one is worse than anything I've seen before. They must have realised this, 'cos the package came with another instruction sheet, in english(whew!), on how to set it up. More condensed, but good enough to tell u how to operate it.

Overall, a good computer. Buy it if u don't mind the slightly harder to access functions. I chose black color though, since the others look so toyish. Get this if u are sure u will use the functions. If not, get a simpler model.

Strengths:Has all the basic functions you need.
Cheap and durable.
All the non-cadance cateyes share the same mount.
Weaknesses:Too many button presses needed to get to see the clock.
Displays your speed above 20 MPH in only .5 MPH increments
Maximum speed display is a bit pessimistic.
Bottom Line:This is the greatest cyclocomputer ever made provided you don't care about cadance. All its features (2 Trip Distances, 99,999 mile odometer, 2 Wheel Circumfrences, clock, average speed, max speed, elapsed time and dual line display) are still unequaled in most of the other cyclocomputers on the market.

It's maximum speed is a bit off. If you briefly surge to a high speed, the cateye will say that it is a bit less than what it really was. You must sustain the speed for a period of time before it will recognize it. The Average speed isn't known to be highly accurate, but since this unit can already log time and distance, you can just as easily caculate it yourself if you want a more accurate figure. If your a speed freak you might be disappointed in knowing that the cateye only displays speeds in .5 increments above 20 MPH.

The cateyes share the same mount except maybe for the Astrale and the OS for easy swapping between bikes.

Strengths:small, light, easy to read display, reading to .1 at slower speeds, accomodates any road fork.
Weaknesses:Mine is stuck reading in metric. Several attempts have done nothing to change this. Performance said they will replace it; 'til then I'm running conversions in my head!

Advice: If you think you need cadence in your computer, think again. Just make a chart of your cadence based on speeds in several gears (30kph in a 55x19 etc.)you'll get a feel and won't have to deal with all the extra sensors, wires and expense.

I hated it when I would have about 3500 miles on my computer and the battery would die and it would just start back over at 0. The clock is a good function since I always like to know what time it is. It was easy to set up and doesn't budge on the handlebar. I'm going to buy another one for my wifes Raleigh. Great buy. (If this computer can display time while riding, I wish someone would tell me how!) This thing is complicated to the nth degree, and I often forget to reset it. Bottom Line:The mity 3 gives an overall feel of excellent quality. The speedometer is very sensitive and measures extremely low speeds (which I often reach while walking my bike uphill-shame!); amazingly when you go REAL slow (below, say, 2.5 km per hour) it reads zero speed, but keep measuring distance faithfully. You can use it reliably for not getting lost (eg when a trail guide tells you things like turn left past 1.3 km...).I find it handyl to do drivetrain maintenance with my bike standing on the ground upside down and the front of the bike stands on the mity3- lots of scratches, but keeps working. OK also with thorough high-pressure wash-ups, or long distances travelled on top of car in the rain.I know there's plenty of fancy computers with many more functions but I have never felt the need for more than the mity3 does. Damn good.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:This is one the best values going. it's at least $5 -$1o cheaper than thier competeion. You get two different trip odometers and dual bike size settings. You can choose what you ant for the larger-size display. It will take a while to get used to cycling thru it, as several functions (trip2, total odo, clock, and max speed_) require to hold down the button. Now that i'm used to it, I like it, beacuse it make it easier to get to stuff i'm interested in.

I think that it is a very good unit, i have gone mountain biking with it many times, and the shock didnt dammage it at all. I think that if you are looking into a new bike computer, look into the mitty 3.

Strengths:
Lots of functions for the price. You can restore the odometer reading after you change batteries out or reset the unit. Hard to accidentally reset (needs three fingered salute)
Weaknesses:
A little confusing to learn to use at first. Pushing on the bottom edge mounted buttons causes mount to move, I needed 2 hands to clear current ride data, and I know the mount was tight enough.
Bike Setup:
Specialized StumpJumper Comp
Bottom Line:Ok, I know why you have to hold down the mode button to get at the other functions. Let's see, pressing the mode button cycles through ride time, ave. speed and trip distance (current speed is always displayed). What else do you need? I guess it beats the hell out of cycling through ALL the functions, i.e. ride time, clock, ave. speed, max speed, distance 1, distance 2, odometer. That's 5 presses to get from clock to ride time. And how many of us wanna see the odometer, that's TOTAL mileage on the bike, during a typical ride? So Cateye saw it fit to require a press and hold down feature to view the less often used data. So instead of cycling your mode button thru 7 data readouts, you only get to go through the 3 most significant ones. Other features: Real time +/- ave. speed vs. current speed readout (always displayed), 2 wheel sizes capability, auto start/stop, auto on/off.

Bottom Line:The heavy duty cable seems to help. It's much more waterproof than other computers I've used. The dual bike option is nice. Having three distance readings seemed like a waste when I first started using this computer. I now consider it one of the more desireable features -- one for current distance; one for total distance forthis ride; one for total distance for the bike. This comes in handy when riding unfamiliar trails; i.e. go 3 miles to the fork and go north, go another 5.5 and head south. You can reset one to zero at each mark yet keep a running total for the entire ride. Very good product.

Bottom Line:

I got one of these (the Enduro with the heavy duty cable)thrown in with the deal on my FSR (and what a deal it was!)and I love it. I had a Mity 2 that I was going to use, but this one was free, so I gave it a try. The big screen is invaluable to check at a glance, and the heavier cable is a bonus, too. The functions are a bit confusing to start with and holding a button for 2 seconds on the fly is not the best idea. Overall, though, better than the Mity 2 and worth the four chillies.

Good product, and well supported. It has all of the normal functions (speed, distance, average, time) that you expect. The bonus for me was the fact that it can take two wheel sizes -- this makes it tons easier to swap the computer between my road bike (GASP! A roadie has infiltrated the group!) and my mountain bike.Cateye service has been excellent -- I have already managed to kill one Mity III (it locked up on me and wouldn't clear -- I think that one of the buttons ceased to function). My computer was cheerfully replaced by the factory. The customer service rep. on the phone was very pleasant, and they processed my return very quickly with no hassles.Overall, I'm happy.

For the price, the Mity 3 is just about perfect. I once had a Mity 2. It's still working but on my brother's bike. I got a Vetta C-15 because it looked nice. Well, it broke twice, so now I'm back to Cateye. The Mity 3's display is nearly twice as big as the Vetta's, it has more functions, and it seems durable. The only catch: It's a bit bulky, and it's a little harder to learn how to use because it has so many options.

The Mity 3 is a pretty good computer, all things considered. The buttons don't have a very positive feel, but the display is big and it has all the features of the expensive computers at half the cost. Get the Enduro 2 if you ride a mountain bike--the thicker wire is supposedly more durable.
