Purchased At:Sun & Ski
Strengths:Simple, easy to switch displays will riding, apparenlty ment for the trails
Weaknesses:Would have been nice to have clock on front page always.

Bike Setup:02 Big Sur
Bottom Line:I have an old one so I am not sure what the updated version has now but this one has done me well. I know I have knocked the crap out of this sensor in the past from wrecks and I am just now looking for a new sensor but the computer appears to be fine. Don't remember what I paid. Never replaced battery yet. Its probably due one.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:JE James Cycles
Strengths:Durable, easy to navigate features, easy installation, convenient to use with one hand whilst riding (though you should really be looking where you're going). Waterproof, shockproof. VERY shockproof.
Weaknesses:Cable tie on the sensor is slightly messy. Securing clip on the handlebar bracket is useless, unit will fall off if you bump it.
Similar Products Used:CateEye Mity 2 on my previous bike
Bike Setup:GT I-Drive 4.0 2001 full suspension with Rock Shox front end and Fox Racing Float rear. Claude Butler hardtail XC setup, Rock Shox Dart-3 with rebound adjust and PopLoc lockout, Mavics and some juicy upgraded bits.
Bottom Line:It has been very durable, reliable and served me well. Like I mentioned earlier, the locking-bracket is very poor so it occasionally gets knocked off. It has flown off, bounced on some rocks and then gone under my wheels before... (ouch!) but came out unscathed apart from some minor scratches.

It's a great computer, I couldn't want more from it apart from cadence measurement or heartrate monitor (which I probably won't use anyway). A wireless system would be the only reason for an upgrade.

Would have gotten 5 flamin' chillis of not for the poor locking bracket design.

Strengths:Durability, simplicity, design.
Weaknesses:The zip ties are not a good solution to keeping the sensor stuck to the fork. Also, instructions made me want to cry out in frustration. Who designed these monstorous things.
Bike Setup:GT IDXC, Fox F100x fork, Avid Juicy 7 Disc Brakes, etc....
Bottom Line:Cheap and durable. If it is somehow lost in a crash I will just replace it....it's only $20!!! Four chilli's due to the retarded instructions.

Strengths:simplisity (is that a word?), cheap, available parts, waterproof, (mine has gone throught the washer and dryer more then once) there isnt much that can go wrong with this thing, ive had it on three bikes (two wheel size can be programmed) and its still doing its job
Weaknesses:programming it is kind of a pain in the neck with all the differnt tire size codes but once you get it set its ready to go until you get different size tires.

Strengths:It works. Day in and day out, this little thing has worked for over 5 years without a problem. I ride year round through heat, rain, mud, crashes...nothing has phased it. I use it every ride and never had a problem. I like the small size as it stays out of the way but the display is big enough. The buttons are big enough to work with gloves. Batteries last a long, long time.
Weaknesses:None. I suppose it would be nice if it automatically adjusted to standard/daylight savings time changes on the 24 hour clock.
Similar Products Used:None. It seemed solid when I bought and it has been. There was no reason to try anything else.
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Sugar 2 with assorted upgrades over 5 years. I just got a new Ventana X-5, so time for another Cateye.
Bottom Line:I don't know what more I could have asked for from this unit. Mount it and remember to reset at the start of each ride and you have most of the data you might want. Highly recommended.

Price Paid: $20.00
Purchased At:Mountain Equipment Co-op
Strengths:The heavy duty cable, the battery lasts forever it seems and the size of the display is acceptable. Bought it cheap too
Weaknesses:Lots of em! The button placement on the bottom does not work well, it's better to have them on top, and one of the rubber buttons ripped.
To remove the computer from the mounting bracket can be really difficult sometimes. I also found navigating through the different features confusing as a some of the operations require you to push two and even 3 buttons all at once!
I'm not sure why but for some reason the maximum speed it will read is around 30 MPH, not sure why it won't read higher. I go down some steep hills and am pretty sure I've exceeded what the computer says.

Bike Setup:Giant Iguanna 650 SE
Bottom Line:Cat Eye did'nt design it very well, if it was'nt for the heavy duty wiring I would not have bought it.

Strengths:Display, cost
Weaknesses:The mounting bracket
Bottom Line:The cpu works fine and the heavy duty wire is nice for off road use. The problem is with the mounting bracket which breaks if you look at it funny. I've had 2 enduros one I broke off in a crash (thats understandable) the other was vibrated to dealth and broke. The piece that holds onto the handlebar is very thin for off road use. Buy something more rugged such as a specialized they are far more durable.

Strengths:durable, price, display, option of thick wire
Weaknesses:Color...purple, it was all they had
Bottom Line:Bang for buck, this thing is it. The display is nice and big, and the features are straight forward. It's been dropped and keeps on going. My friend was trying to put it back on while riding and dropped it. We were going about 17 mph, and it bounced for a while, but it's fine.

the thicker wire option is much more durable. If you have the choice get the bigger wire.

Bottom Line:I've used this in all weathers, in temperatures ranging from -4F to 100+, mainly on my daily 14-mile round-trip commute for over 3 years and can honestly say that the only problem I've had is the sensor moving and causing the computer not to register. Colorado has the best cycling climate I know of, but it can be a little, shall we say, extreme at times. This puppy can handle it all. I'm about to reach the 20,000 mark on the odometer and most of those miles have been logged by my Enduro 2. Oh, and I'm on the original battery. Buy this.

Date Reviewed: January 12, 2004
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $16.00
Purchased At:Cartimar
Strengths:Sturdy wiring, decent display size, excellent color options (black or silver), simple but effective mounting kit
Weaknesses:The wiring is obviously too short for bikes with long-travel suspension forks
Similar Products Used:Vetta models circa early '90s
Bike Setup:Specialized hardtail and mono-link FS bike with Rock Shox deluxe shock, Hayes disc brakes, Deore and STX-RC component mix, Suntour XCP-95 suspension fork, Maxxis Mobsters,
Bottom Line:This is an excellent product. I love the thick wiring. Makes you feel that it will hold in the roughest trails. This computer is excellent for mountainbiking. One other thing that I like most about this product is the mounting kit. The spiral tube that is used to secure the wiring to the front brake cable is very effective and easy to install. I remember the days when cyclocomputers required a whole lot of electric tape to keep the excess wiring secure.

Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:EBay auction
Strengths:Heavy Duty Wiring, cool silver colour, reliable, relatively easy to install and set up
Weaknesses:None that I can find as yet...if I had to say one it would be the colour selection....if you don't like silver or black casings this one may not be for you...
Similar Products Used:Other Cateye computers on past bicycles
Bike Setup:1997 Cannondale M700 (in galaxy blue)...modifications to seat and pedals...also will be adding a good lighting system soon to the bike. :)
Bottom Line:Great cycomputer for the money, and looks great in silver, particularily with a bike with a metallic coat. Has most of the essential functions that are needed for commuting at a very good price, such as a clock, speed, distance, timer, and more. Also has some of the best wiring in the market. Just be sure to not mount the wiring too tight (allow a little slack) else the wiring can break when making a sharp turn. I've had a number of Cateye cyclecomputers on my other bicycles and plan to stick with them unless something major happens, which, in over 10 years of racing, city commuting, and other biking, I've had no problems with them. If you want a really durable computer and don't need a lot of the fancier functions like temperature, I'd place this model at the top or near the top of your list, particularily if you have a mountain or hybrid bicycle.

Strengths:Simple display, easy to install, The computer is durable.
Weaknesses:Wiring too short. Computer Bracket barely fit my handbars? Sensor don't last very long.

Similar Products Used:Can't remember.
Bike Setup:Enduro Pro w/ time Z Pedals and crane Creek Ergo Bar Ends
Bottom Line:This is cheap so its a excellent starter computer. But the quality is questionable because I already got my sensor bracket replaced because it just stopped reading after only about 2 mouth or so. But the computer unit itself seem pretty durable because it went through a lot of beatings. Also the computer bracket barely fits on my handlebar, had to zip tie it so it won't slip off my handlebar.

Computer function is simple to use and useful, no unecessary junks.

4 for value and overall 2 chillis because it broke once.

Strengths:A great value! Ultra-reliable, fast speedometer response, dual wheel settings, odometer can be adjusted to include mileage from an old computer. REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE CHEAP for baseplate, sensor, and mounts.

Weaknesses:The cable is barely long enough for use with a REALLY big frame (e.g. long steerer tube on a 22.5" frame). The wire came disconnected from the baseplate after 1800 miles (I soldered it back, and it seems OK). My cable snapped once when dragging the bike out of a steep crevasse--I soldered the wires together and rode another 600 miles before I had any more trouble.
Similar Products Used:Bell computer (piece of $hit) from KMart

Bottom Line:The computer part is really really durable. The baseplate and sensor assembly is hard to break, but not impossible. A huge bonus is that replacement for this are available for $10 at the manufacturer's webpage: www.cateye.com

If you have a HUGE frame (I am 6'4" with a 22.5" frame) the cable might be a little short.

Bottom Line:This computer is great for mtn biking. It can stand the abuse that comes with mtn biking. I've had this thing through some very rough rides and some good wrecks and it jsut keeps on working. I've also had it on some very wet rides, even had it completely submerged in water (not by choice) and didn't even phase it. It doesn't have any extra special functions, just the basic, but for the price, is well worth it. Anyone that's looking for a great basic computer for mtn. biking, I would recommend this computer too. Bottom Line:This is a very basic and functional computer. I banged this computer on several occasions and it appears to have no problem! I like the default mode where it records, av. speed, distance and time at the same time!

What annoyed me is that the bracket kept moving around so it kept missing the magnet. I have to re-align the bracket everytime before the ride. Yesterday it completely stopped reading the computer, so after numerous re-alignment of the brackets I still couldn't get it to work. Not worth the money to get a replacement bracket kit so I'm getting a new computer. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING but road bikes should be OK!

Bottom Line:Good, basic computer. The plastic housing is easily scratched. After 1 particularly brutal XC ride (lots of small rocks, roots, etc...) I noticed the computer didn't work--turned out that the stupid transmitter that is attached to the fork moved a bit. The point of attachment where you stick the fork transmitter isn't quite big enough to give a good hold, despite using 2 supplied zip ties. Strengths:Dual trip meter, tough cable, Large k/m display and ability to change between two bikes with different wheels
Weaknesses:Button a little tough to press
Similar Products Used:Sigma Sport Targa
Bottom Line:Coming from a crappy Dick Smith shop cyclometer, this was a huge improvement to start with.

The thing I liked about this cyclometer was being able to set the ODO so when the battery needs replacing you don't go back to zero.

After using for awhile, I became to really enjoy the dual tripmeter function. I can record the trip from home to work, and also record the total k/ms done that week.

The button though can be a little annoying to press while riding, though this is supposed to make the unit tough and durable for us professionals, especially bush bashing

All in all I can't expect much more from a unit at this price.

I use the dual trip distance a lot more than I first expected that I would.
Ability to customize what is on the display when you want it there.
When I stop riding and it goes into sleep mode, when I start up again it goes straight to the display I had it on. Unlike a certain Specialized computer I know of
Weaknesses:Can't think of any. All of the previous weaknesses I found with this computer were fixed with the revised 2003 version.
Similar Products Used:I had the exact same Enduro 2 that I bought back in 1998. The wheel sensor always broke, and the fork sensor always slid down, making it miss the wheel sensor. All those problems have been addressed with the new Enduro I bought
Also bought a Specialized Enduro Comp, Hated it! Bought a new Enduro 2 after one week. I don't like having to push the mode button 3 times to get to average speed each time I start riding, It should stay there all the time unless I change it
Bike Setup:Specialized Hardrock Pro, haven't had it long enough to change anything major, except handlebar, grips, and Avid Speed Dial 7's

Bottom Line:All product experiences like this one start with research, move to purchase, then installation, then use, then ultimately demise. I researched this product, purchased it based upon favorable reviews, then performed installation. Installation was a poor experience, starting with unclear setup instructions and inaccurate centimeter to inch conversion instructions. I worked through those problems, and got the computer mounted. Looked good, spun the wheel and it registed speed. Then I tried to dismount the computer from the handlebar mount. Wouldn't release despite pressing release lever. Finally, after much wrestling, the computer broke loose and flew out of my hands onto my garage floor. Now scratched, I remounted it and had the same difficulty dismounting it. Studied the situation and found that the release lever was restricted (intentionally, I assume). So, I got out a flat file and filed away the restriction and the bottom of the release lever (took around 30 minutes). Now, the computer can be released without a major wrestling match. My rating assumes that the computer will work flawlessly from this point on.

Weaknesses:The sensor broke when my bike fell in my garage (and the Enduro 2 is the hardcore, beefed up,robust version of the Mity 3.) I found out that Europe Bound (www.europebound.com)sells the entire CatEye package for $21.95 Can when Winning Cycle and Sports (the store I bought it from) sells it for $38 Can and the sensor kit for $20 Can. (Might as well pay the extra $1.95 and get another Computer as well) Also, the man who owns Winning gets upset if you go into his shop and you don't buy something over $20.

Bottom Line:I have replaced the mounting bracket several times due to crashes. My main gripe with this product is that the replacement brackets are very expensive ($14 Can) compared to the price of the computer itself which is $30 Can.
Cateye needs to re-design the mounting bracket so that I do not have to replace the wire and wheel sensor each time the
bracket is replaced. They should make some sort of quick connect so that I can replace the only mounting bracket. This should lower the price of the mounting bracket to something more reasonable. I guess this sort of pricing scheme is similar to computer printers. They'll sell you the printer for cheap, but the consumables (ink) are very expensive.

Overall I give this 2 chilis for value because of the high cost of replacement brackets.

Weaknesses:It's hard to snap the computer in the holder. It feels like your going to break it so I just leave it in and don't mess with it. The buttons are kind of hard to push, especially being on the bottom. I like big soft ones on the face.

Although I usually leave it on either time or distance and don't mess with it while riding. I had to get creative in mounting it on my lefty fork. It CAN be done but it's tricky, and if the wire would have been one inch shorter I would have been screwed. Weaknesses:My bars are somewhat narrow, so I needed a shim to get the monitor clip on them. The two shims they provided, one was too thick, one was too thin. I ended up using the thinner one and wrapping it a few times w/electrical tape. I could've also cut up an old tube.
Similar Products Used:First bike computer

Bottom Line:I actually bought a cateye Mity 3 at the same time. The Mity 3 was $14 and I picked one up for my road bike, and I almost bought two. Glad I didn't and got this one for my MTB instead. It is a much beefier version of the Mity 3. Same features, but the set up is for the thicker forks, heavy duty cable to withstand MTB abuse, and so one.

The display is big enough so that even on tougher trails, you can take a quick glance down to see your speed, but the instructions recommend against this.

Personally I like to track Max Speed, Avg Speed, Current Speed, and actual riding time (the timer doesn't count when you are stopped - but it does have a feature to manually start and stop if you wanted to track it that way).

I've only had this installed for a few rides and can't comment on the durability, but so far I like it a lot, especially for $24.

Also, I was originally looking for a wireless setup, thinking suspension and cables wouldn't mix. But after reading reviews on all the wireless computers, I decided to go with a wire system for reliability.

Purchased At:Seo Cycle (pro shop), LalaPort shopping mall at Tokyo Bay
Strengths:What more do you need? It's not a spectactular product, but it works spectacularly well. The one especially notable feature is the heavy duty wire. This is a very durable contraption. Cat Eye makes good stuff, no doubt about it.
Weaknesses:Only one: in a fall or crash, particularly going forward, the computer lauches off the bar mounting as if it was meant to do this. Also, until I broke it in (or it got significantly gritty enough) it had a tendency to rattle out of its mounting just enough that it wouldn't take readings--and that can really p### a person off when they find out they've lost about 10km of data! I wish the computer locked into the mount better.
Similar Products Used:Guestimation

Bottom Line:My brother and I both use the Enduro II, which we chose based on the fact that it has all the basic functions, it's easy to use, features a heavy duty wire (besides that it's not a crappy wireless system), and price.

I would be less satisfied with a more expensive, feature filled cyclocomputer, though I do wish I could get the exact same thing with backlighting and would pay more for it.

Strengths:Small, lightweight, lots of features
Weaknesses:Feature access a bit obtuse. Poor mount for magnet on spokes didn't work well. Wire pulled out of computer after two rides.
Similar Products Used:Sigma, Cateye OS1
Bike Setup:iDrive, Hope discs
Bottom Line:Pretty good product. The biggest weekness is that the little thing that mounts the magnet to the spokes simply didn't fit very well, as it requires attachment to two spokes. It has some angles that simply didn't match the spoke pattern and kept falling off. Even if the angles had matched, I'm not sure that it would have stayed on anyway. Part of the problem is that getting the pickup close enough to the magnet required mounting the whole thing close to the hub.

I hope Cateye has fixed this - the entire magnet/pickup system for their OS-1 is a much better setup. OS1 would be perfect with the Enduro's heavy duty cable, smaller unit and lighter weight. I wonder if the Enduro fits on the OS1's mount?

I'd still recommend this over the Sigma, which has a truly *awful* mount with those rubber band that seem to break all the time.

The only minor gripe is the Spoke mounted sensor wich is easily moved from its position when cleaning or falling off your bike :) A very minor flaw :) That is necessary for this kind of product.

Strengths:Easy to install. No fuss when clipping and unclipping the computer. Great display, features for everyone. This is a good value for money computer. I have not had a days grief from it. Always performed better than expected. even after 1.5min under water.
Weaknesses:The mechanical mounting may be a point to consider for future developments. Especially when looking at the off road users requirements.
BUT
The most serious shortcoming is that of Product Support, and customer care. ( Or should I say "Don't care")
Bike Setup:Garry Fisher Hookoo-Ekoo, Specialized Enduro
Bottom Line:I have been riding actively for the past 2 years, I started using the Mity3 and after a endo crash-out I broke the attachment and subsequently lost the computer during a race.
I then bought a Enduro II and have been quite happy with the performance.
Earlier this year I bought a Specialized Enduro and wanted to use the swap over feature and tried to order a second mounting kit.
My local cycle shop informed me not to get my hopes up as I wanted the Stem mount bracket, which they did not have and would have to order from the local agent. Well to cut a long story short. Over the past few months I have been told that the device is not made any more, It can not be ordered, or that Cateye would not send it over.
I have also sent a e-mail from the web site to Cateye directly, but with no reply.
Guys you have a good product look at the reviews, BUT your service leaves much to be desired.

Weaknesses:See below.
Similar Products Used:Avocet 45 (a much better computer in my experience.
Bike Setup:Softtail mountain bike.
Bottom Line:I agree with some of the critical comments of Eric Hatch, ~23 reviews below this one. The algorithm that calculates average speed is unsatisfactory. When I get to the top of a 5-mile, 1100-foot climb that I regularly ride, the Cateye may show an average speed of 9.0 mph. After I've ridden on the ridge for a few hundred feet at a higher-than-average speed, the average is nonetheless likely to drop to 8.9. Not only that, it may continue to bobble between 9.1 and 8.9 two or three times, over a distance of about a quarter-mile, before it finally settles down! There must be a serious flaw in the computational algorithm.
Also, all of the Cateyes I've used (on and off the road) since the mid-1980s have eventually failed for one reason or another. Most or all of them eventually failed to register a reading above zero, as though the contacts on the mount and/or the handlebar unit had lost their conductivity, and I'd have to bang on the computer face to restore a positive number. (Admittedly, it usually took about 10,000 miles for this to occur.) Eventually, even that crude repair technique wouldn't work; neither did cleaning the contacts. And sometimes the wheel mounts would slip or break. Now, my current Enduro 2 has about 1,000 miles on it, and it hasn't failed yet, but I'm not optimistic about its future.
And I dislike the fact that at speeds of more than 20 mph, it only displays the current and maximum speed in 0.5-mph increments.

I have ridden with this computer for a little under 2000 miles and it has performed flawlessly--- through multiple crashes, scrapes, etc. Its covered in wounds but it's still ticking, heavy gauge wire a plus--i am extremely satisfied with this product, instructions a bit awkward, but its not like this is brain surgery, so not a big deal. Highly recommended

Date Reviewed: January 13, 2001
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Relatively durable cabling; Works most of the time; Good size LCD numbers
Weaknesses:Difficult to install wheel sensor; wheel sensor is not very sensitive, requiring fiddling with sensor and magnet; Below satisfactory instructions; Contains features you'll never use which makes product (e.g. operating modes and display) more confusing; sometimes fails in wet, cold conditions.
Similar Products Used:Vetta, Avocet, Specialized, Gary Fisher, Sigma
Bottom Line:This computer is somewhat better than the others, but still lacking. Cateye and others should spend less time trying to add new features and more time improving and simplying what they already offer.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $35.00
Purchased At:The Bike Shop
Strengths:Easy operation, 2 distance trips, heavy duty wiring, accuracy
Similar Products Used:Old Cateye, Vetta
Bike Setup:01' Schwinn Moab 3
Bottom Line:This computer was highly recommended by my LBS. I like the heavy duty wiring & the 2 trip distance the best. When you want to figure out a distance from point A to B in the middle of your ride or to figure out where you are in the woods. Operation is very easy. I don't see how you could ask for much more in an computer. After I got mine, most of my friends went and got the same one!
