$1400.00 | | Purchased At: | Ebay-used | | Strengths: | Light weight, bomb proof, great climber, slices thru single track | | Weaknesses: | wish it would accomodate riser bars better | | Bike Setup: | stock | | Bottom Line: | I've had several bikes over the years. Bought this one because I wanted something stock. Wanted a Santa Cruz Blur, but couldn't swing it at the time. Now, I feel like I've stumbled onto the score of the century. This thing is so light, it eats up roots and stays on track with no problem. Steering seems perfectly suited for single track. Doesn't under or oversteer IMO. I'm trying to hate this thing so I can have an excuse to buy the Blur, but I just can't find a reason. Love it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

After working in bike shops for 6 years i can honestly tell you this is the most advanced, best designed, completely tunable race bike around. It is a leap in technology that reaches a new reference. I have hammered it in CA, nevada, colorado, north carolina, texas, arizona and it just feels better every ride. and it does it all FAST. No other bike can do this without wasting energy. forget unified swing arms, forget other suspension designs...they are from cars that have 1000 pound mass coeficients, not 150 -200 pounds! understanding the physics and scale make the difference. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1500.00 | | Purchased At: | Ebay | | Strengths: | Actually, year 2002 Scalpel 1000. Light weight, handles well. | | Weaknesses: | Headshok Ultra and Magura Louise disc brakes suck. The headshok, not lefty, continues to leak air within minutes. Repeated service does not solve the problem. Also, the standard magura louise disc brakes continuely lose pressure. The cannondale dealer cannot seem to bleed the air out of the lines. Even when the lever holds pressure it is only temporary. | | Bike Setup: | stock, except upgrade to carbon handlebars, carbon FSA cranks and bottom bracket | | Bottom Line: | Proprietary cannondale crap. The headshok concept is good, but the execution is crappy. Reminds me of the Klein mission control integrated bar/stem with oversized headset. Tons of problems. Maybe this is why Cannondale is being bought out. Stupid decisions like a foray in the motocross. Innovation without reliability is not good for business. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$2400.00 | | Purchased At: | Wildrock Outfitters | | Strengths: | great well balanced suspension. I found the lefty to be far stiffer and has less flex than conventional fork. Great bike if not sure if you want or can afford both a hardtail or full suspension. | | Weaknesses: | rear hub too weak, replaced with DT Swiss hub matched to Mavic 819 rim, made a huge difference. Shimano deore hydro brakes are not very good have since changed to Avid Juicy 5's | | Similar Products Used: | Giant XCR 3 | | Bottom Line: | Overall one of the best bikes I have riden. $1200.00 | | Purchased At: | used - craigslist | | Strengths: | Design. Design rigor was applied and tested. Long evolution of refinements have made this product dialed-in to it's specific function. Rider position is different than most bikes. The position erases the tendency to ride it like a BMX bike from our past. Overall this bike has changed my pedal stroke, weight distribution, and expectations.Components are fine for XC. | | Weaknesses: | cables are a tough route, but can be correctly set up with the right mechanic (engineer). Stock components work well, except the cranks. I just couldnt get that balanced feel. Switch to raceface. | | Similar Products Used: | specialized carbon, trek carbon, Kona hei hei, ellsworth, ironhorse | | Bike Setup: | stock, except for cranks. KEEP it clean and tuned, and your 90% up to a full XTR rig. Its about upkeep and setup. | | Bottom Line: | most dialed in bike for XC. It is designed , not just assembled. Wholistic approach to redining what a cross county rig is. Not just a freeride bike with shorter travel. American Ingenuity and desire developed this bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

After a couple of test rides I decided to get the Scalpel instead. Great XC racing bike. I upgraded all parts right away to XTR and what a difference it made! Carbon chainstay flex along on curves and berms, makes you want to attack it some more. Remote lockout for front and rear shocks are very helpful. Mind you, this is not a Freeride nor Downhill bike. This was designed and made with the XC racer in mind. So those of you who wants to freeride, this is not the bike for it.

$2200.00 | | Purchased At: | Pro-Motion Cycles in Ormond | | Strengths: | Great frame. Nicely balanced front and rear suspension (80 and 67 mm of travel). Just enough suspension to take the edge of the rough stuff, but never soggy and still responsive. | | Weaknesses: | Crap colour scheme. | | Similar Products Used: | Previous bikes were Cannondale Jekyll and F series(with Lefty) | | Bike Setup: | Standard 2006, but with Avid hydro brakes. Would like to lighten(change) the wheels and maybe a couple of other things, but I should concentrate on my belly first. Bike is ok the way it is. | | Bottom Line: | Great bike. Light, sharp and never soggy. Doesn't need a Lefty (had one on the previous hardtail) and the Headshok works really nicely. Rear suspension is the best design I have ever seen. The Fox RP3 at the back is fantastic and removes the bob which was so annoying on the Jekyll. The subsequant harsh ride on the F series rear end made me move to the Scalpel and I am so glad of it. The steering is much much slower than the F series hard-tail, but all that means is I need to move my arms faster. Big deal. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

When I first read some of the reviews for this bike, I though “how lame are these people who fall in love with their bikes,” but I have to admit… This bike is just that good. | | Weaknesses: | Honestly, none that I can report. | | Similar Products Used: | Nothing that compares. | | Bike Setup: | Upgrades so far = Egg Beater Pedals, Thomson Elite Seat Post, Monkey Bars / EA70. | | Bottom Line: | This bike is just INSANE. I am sure that there are individuals who have had their bad experiences, but that is going to happen. The Scalpel has a look and feel all it's own, and the fact that it's is so unique adds to it's luster. Cannondale has gained one very loyal customer. For a lightweight rider i'm not sure the rear shock does much (yes even when properly tuned.) The lefty is smooth like buttah and i love that i can lock it out when i really want to put the smack down. Overall this is a very fun and confidence-inspiring bike. (ok less so on killer downhill but that's hardly the scalpel's purpose.) On a less scientific note i've found mine to be incredibly bomb proof as it fell off my roof rack at 60 mph and the only damage was on the seat. Even further unscientific-- the sobe green paint job is hot! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$2500.00 | | Purchased At: | Ivanhoe Cycles | | Strengths: | Relatively light weight, very responsive in tight single track. Lefty soaks up everything and even on a soft setting doesn't bob under hard, seated pedalling. Rear end takes the edge of exposed roots etc. | | Weaknesses: | The rear cluster, SRAM, was a real pain, continually ghost shifting. Have replaced with XT. Much better but still does it sometimes. | | Similar Products Used: | Cannodale F900, hard tail with lefty. | | Bike Setup: | Standard, apart from rear cluster | | Bottom Line: | Fantastically responsive bike, goes where you point it. Rear end is just soft enough to take the edge off on long, hard rides.

I've had to have the shock replaced by Cannondale twice and I have had nearly constant problems with the brakes: in a good month, the rub a little and make soem noise, in a bad month, they make the bike all but unridable. The local shop owner tells me I'm riding it too hard and that it's not a downhill bike. I have never taken this bike off more than about a 1 foot jump. I ride strictly cross country. I was so fired up when I bought this bike. Now I am very disappointed and want to get rid of it and get something I can keep at home to ride instead of leaving it at the Cannondale mechanic's place all the time. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I had the shop keep "fixing the problem" and it is still not perfect. | | Similar Products Used: | Nothing similar to the Scalpel. | | Bike Setup: | Factory except for CaneCreek bar ends. | | Bottom Line: | For the price and the components, the bike should not have drivetrain problems. I race in Xterra events and I am not completly confident with the reliability of this bike yet. The shop has been cool. They repaced a couple items that were suspect but it not completley fixed. On the road the bike has no drive train issues. Off road is another story. First section of roots or rocks, either the chain gets sucks in or pops off. On top of the frustration, it is also embarrasing. If I wanted a road bike I would have bought one.The Scalpel was advertised as a cross-country race bike. $2500.00 | | Purchased At: | Super Cycles, Indooroopilly | | Strengths: | Magic carpet ride, low weight, beautiful looks, the sudden respectful silence when you pass a group of riders.. | | Weaknesses: | None that I've discovered, other than the price I guess. Cannondales are very expensive in Australia. | | Bike Setup: | Actually a black 2003 Scalpel 800 frame built up with 2004 parts. No difference except 20 more grams due to a different shock mount than that on the 04 bike. | | Bottom Line: | To put this into context, my previous bike was a $1500 Raceline Comp with RST Gila forks and a Deore/LX parts mix. I like to ride fast, technical terrain and don't care that much for big drops and jumps. The trails around here range from what you would find in an XC race to loose and eroded versions of the same.
I had to get over an initial problem with the Lefty DLR. Turned out that a faulty valve core was letting the air straight back out of the fork, but it was easily fixed (big thanks Poul).
The Scalpel's maiden voyage was a 4 hour ride from Mt Nebo back to the Kenmore Tavern that involved lots of high speed descending and several grovelling granny gear ascents of more than a kilometre. (Thanks for the lift to & from, Ivanka).
The Scalpel is a magic carpet ride you won't easily forget. The bike climbs really well, and suspension bob is hardly noticable unless you get out of the saddle and get rough with it, but even then it doesn't seriously curtail forward motion. It just felt smooth all the time. Being my first dual boing purchase, I was worried that the suspension might soak up the subtle flicks and springs that hardtail riders use when riding technical terrain. Well, it does just a little, but it gives back much, much more in the way of control and comfort. The bike is noticably faster than my previous hardtail over the same terrain and was quicker in certain places by a surprising margin over some other annorexic hardtails (3 Cannondales & a Klein) along on the Mt Nebo trip.
The Lefty took an hour or so to get used to as it displayed a tendency to pull slightly to the left when setting up to corner in that direction and took a fraction more effort to corner right. I'm assuming it's cause there's more weight on one side of the wheel. It wasn't a show-stopper by any means but just a quirk - as was the adjustment I needed to make when riding no hands.
I'd highly recommend the Scalpel to anyone looking to buy a lightweight cross country bike that gives the control and flickability of a hardtail with the comfort and forgiveness of a duallie. Oh, and I've trolled the internet for urban myths of cracked carbon fibre chainstays and catastrophic failure of the Lefty fork, and to my knowledge they don't exist.. This isn't the bike for the shinpad-wearing, see how many times I can use the word 'huck' in a sentence crew. The rule of thumb seems to be not to repeatedly launch Scalpels over anything higher than a 3 foot drop.
I guess I got tired of putting up with my Cannondale-snob mates so decided to become one instead ;)
Happy trails! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This is by far the most impressing bike I have ever ridden. Light as a feather but still very stable. Quick to handle and climbs like a furious goat. The tail suspension doesn't have a very long travel but sucks up small rocks and roots excellent and makes the climbs awesome and down hills safe. This cross country lady begs you to go really fast. The faster you go the more safe it feels. Guess it has to do with the quite long top tube on the bike. At first it looked a little big but on the trail it fitted perfect and handling top notch. Continental Explorer tires track and climb well on the trail. | | Weaknesses: | Color scheme - what's up w/the lemon-lime look?!! Plastic-tape looking thingy, covering the chain stay from getting slapped/spanked by the chain. This is the only thing protecting the fiberglass chain stay! Added Cateye computer and biketech said sensor had to mount on rear tire. This increases the probability of the wiring getting snagged on trail debris(twigs/branches that kick up from riding over them). I was told that the wireless doesn't work well on lefty's, so I went w/Bike Center's suggestion on a rear tire sensor. | | Similar Products Used: | Last bike used was Cannondale Super V 800. | | Bike Setup: | Standard - out of the box setup. 40psi on both tires work well for me. | | Bottom Line: | Worth the purchase.
