Strengths:No advantages over any other sus. seatpost
Weaknesses:Expensive and weak tolerances. Too much play from the beginning.
Similar Products Used:RockShox sus. seatpost
Bike Setup:Used on several different hardtails
Bottom Line:Cannondale makes somes good stuff. Unfortunately this does not fall into that classification. The post has excessive play, the rubbr boot split apart in less than a year. As a result of the play the post rocks back and worth.
I've had it sitting in the basement for years. If you see one come up on Ebay or mtbr, pass on it.

Submitted by Al a Weekend Warrior from Glastonbury, CT
Date Reviewed: September 29, 2002
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Fits 27.2 seattube without shims, good clamp mechanism, smooth action when new.
Weaknesses:Rebound seemed less controlled than a USE post I had previously, maybe due to less friction in Cannondale post. As noted in other reviews, weather sealing is mediocre due to poor design (the round top of the boot needs to seal over a triangular slider). Action deteriorates quickly in the wet, and requires constant disassembly and re-greasing. But the final straw was the seatpost bending about 10 degrees to the rear without any major crashes. Cannondale claimed they had never seen that happen before, and refused to make any adjustments.
Similar Products Used:USE (pre-Alien model), which worked well but required yearly or less rebuilds, and currently a Thudbuster, which hasn't been on long enough to comment on.
Bike Setup:Kona Kula with Psylo SL and disk brakes.
Bottom Line:Cannondale needs to do a lot better for the price.

Bottom Line:I read the reviews after buying my bike and it's obvious that water is going to come in from the top. So I used some "stretch" electrical tape. (not regular electrical tape) Look for it at the hardware store. It stretches like a rubber band but sticks to it's self. Anyway I sealed it up around the top. I also attached a small tube about a 1/2 inch long in front of the bellow at the bottom for air intake, due to the boot sucking in.
I live in Seattle, It rains half the year! My seat post work as good as when I got it. I occasionally oil it.

Strengths:Reasonable travel
Fairly good overall stength
Two bolt micro adjustable clamp.
Weaknesses:No top out bumper
Insecure boot fit
Similar Products Used:Nil
Bike Setup:Cannondale F900SX.(2000 model)
Bottom Line:I've used this post for a year now and have made a few simple observations.
The post performs flawlessley throughout the summer untill it starts to rain. The problem with my post being the boot tension was too loose meaning after the first couple of hits it would drop down on the outer tube exposing the facets on its internal shaft which runs through the rows of needle bearings to the trail crude."Hey presto" one seized post.I dismantled it to find a very simplistic internal shaft running on a single elastomer.Certainly not rocket science and consequently no justification for its over-inflated price tag. That said and done I throughly cleaned and lubed the bearings and reassembled the post. Now the REALLY technical bit.I installed one simple zip tie at the base of the boot which in-turn keeps the boot up against the bottom of the seat clamp resulting in virtually no crap entering the bearings at all.As anyone who kwows anything about HEADHOCK products will be aware, it is absolutely priority #1 to keep the boot secured and in good condition over this bearing system. It would also help a lot of people out there if they were to used a funny little thing called "COMMON SENSE".Not a brilliant post but certainly better than it has been portrayed as here.

Purchased At:Pedal Pushers Palmerston North
Strengths:My wife and I ride a Cannondale tandem RT3000 (2000 model. She has found the suspension really good for shock absorption when it was working!
Weaknesses:We have owned the tandem and used this seat post for less than six months and less than 900 kilometres travelled. When I first got the bike I had to change the Coda seat immediately as it was so bad. Now the Coda seat post has packed it in. The bike shop (Pedal Pushers Palmerston North have been absolutely excellent. However, it would seem that a seat post that you can't ride in the rain is pretty pathetic. In six months the seat post got wet only twice and yet now it is grating and close to being rigid.
Similar Products Used:None
Bottom Line:After having read this web site it would seem as though the best course of action is to get the Coda replaced with a Rock Shox post. It would seem as though the best course of action is to stay away from Coda products. However, the Cannondale bike is great (so far!).

Bike Setup:Cannondale F900SX. I have replaced every Coda part on the bike over the last year, as everything has broken.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $160.00
Purchased At:Class Cycles, Southbury, CT
Strengths:Great on your lower back, surprisingly plush, just the right amount of suspension without sacrificing the performance of a hardtale.
Weaknesses:Heavy, expensive unless you buy it with a Cannondale, boot comes loose, it seized up on me after just one rainy ride (thank God Cannondale replaced it for free), requires frequent maintanence.
Similar Products Used:CODA competition rigid post, Cuda rigid post
Bike Setup:2000 C'dale F2000SX, XT/XTR, Lefty DLR
Bottom Line:Well when its working properly, it does a great job. Its plush, comfortable and serves its purpose. But its really hard to justify the maintanence, the weight and the $160 price tag. I got rid of mine after about 4 months and just put on a regular Cuda rigid post.

Weaknesses:Got a little over a year of use with the 99 Coda post. It became too loose over time and I chucked it for a regular Thompson post. The boot came up alot letting gunk in one time so bad that it siezed up. Once it starts getting loose, it progressively gets worse. Didnt bother trying the 00 Coda post.

Strengths:is a suspension post. 2000 could use damping.
Weaknesses:Backed up by Crapandfail. 2000 model stroked very well but bounced you off the bike. Rusted after 3 days of no use, jammed and dropped a bearing out the bottom. Boot let water in. Cannondale told me not to wash the bike with a hose! Replaced with a 1999 post it broke at the clamp and had bad stiction. Replacement wobbles and is looking tired. I am only 60 kg!!

Bike Setup:Cannondale F2000 lefty with crappy coda brakes and cranks - what a dud!!
Bottom Line:Cannondale Australia have replaced the 2000 needle bearing model with the even worse 1999 model (it must be cheaper to replace!!). They don't have lay back, they don't work for very long before they break and Cannondale aren't very helpful! Favorite Trail:the ones with great views.
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $40.00
Strengths:CODA 1999- fair performance, until about 3 months later, it turns into a rigid seatpost.
CODA 2000- I can't believe it came from the same guys that made such a crappy seatpost....No side to side play, smooth as butter, better head clamp, boot actually stays on!
Weaknesses:CODA 1999- piece of junk all around. The rivet holding the head fell out, replaced it with a freakin bolt! Side to side play was more than the up and down motion of the suspension post.
CODA 2000- $150????? you've got to be kidding! You can get a suspension fork for that much!
Similar Products Used:rock shox, control post, post modern
Bike Setup:1999 Cannondale RT 1000, 1993 Bridgestone MB-1, 1987 Bridgestone RB-1
Bottom Line:My tandem came with the 1999 Coda post, and after numerous overhauls, I talked to the local Cannondale rep about the crappy post, and he replaced it for $40 to the new 2000 Coda post. I hated shelling out another $40, but the new post is awsome! The needle bearings are smmooooooth! Better than any I've tried so far!

I swapped out the heavy elastomer for an old judy Type II set up (MCU/Spring) and it is not only lighter, but performs even better.

And guess what? no side to side play! the post and the post head is one piece! What a novel idea!

FELLOW CYCLISTS, IF YOU HAVE A CODA SUS-POST 99 OR OLDER, RETURN THEM TO AN ATHORIZE CANNONDALE SHOP AND COMPLAIN ABOUT IT. THE C-REP WILL MOST LIKELY OFFER TO TRADE UP FOR THE 2000 MODEL. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, UNLESS YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND ANY MORE MONEY TOWARDS CANNONDALE.

One flaming turd for the 99 post, Five for the 2000 model. Three if you average the two. Overall value is 3 for the extra 40 clams I had to shell out to get a decent post.

The design is different with the bearings and all, but the performance is just as bad as the old ones. Mine suffered from stiction and seemed to rebound when it wanted to. It also developed side -to-side play quickly. When it rains, forget it because the post will turn into a rigid one because the boot doesn't work. I tried it for about 3 months and finally gave up and sold the thing. I bought a USE xcr (Way lighter and much better) I chose it over the Rock Shox because it was a tad lighter but BOTH the the USE and the Rock Shox are better! If you don't race and aren't concerned about weight, buy which ever is cheaper between the USE and Rock Shox because they both perform very well. Whatever you do, DON'T BUY the CODA! I've used both the Use and Rock Shox suspension seatposts and both are better than this CODA CRUD! I had heard that this year's Coda's were supposed to be improved over previous years, but they're not! Mine developed side -to side- play very early on and just quit working on me after a few months! I brought it back to the shop numerous times and finally I was given the option of getting a new Coda for 50% off or a $35 store credit on another brand. I chose the store credit towards another brand and I bought the Rock Shox. It's better built, lighter, and soaks up everything. Trust me,now or trust me later, it's your money and you've been warned. Don't pay attention to those wearing their Cannondale glasses while reviewing this product because they're fools. The Coda post is bad! If I could rate it lower than a 1 I would.

Favorite Trail:Ashland Watershed
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Very responsive and very smooth. Keeps tailbones from being brutalized on long demanding rides. My original 99 had a problem and was replaced by "Sims Bike Shop" and Cannondale no ?'s asked.
Weaknesses:Price is a bit much @ 125.00
Similar Products Used:N/A
Bike Setup:Used on Trek 6500.
Bottom Line:It's worth the $$$ if you want to cushion your ride. 2000 model is a big improvement from 99.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:no slop--moves on needle bearings
Weaknesses:top-out clunk
Similar Products Used:Thud Buster
Bike Setup:C'dale f5000 Team (hardtail) with headshock
Bottom Line:Excellent post. I like the up and down movement as opposed to the Thud Buster's paralellogram that moves the post back and down. The Coda uses needle bearings and therefore has no sie to side play. The boot isn't secured to the post, so it seems as if dirt could enter easily, but it hasn't happened yet. C'dale told me they are coming out with a kit to zip tie the boot ends, and it will be available at no charge. It's not the most plush post but it takes the edge off and saves you from some pinch flats and conserves energy. This makes it a great alternative to full suspension for the cross country rider, especially in Florida where there is tight singletrack and lots of roots and rocks but few long downhills. The only negative is a clunking sound when it tops out and it only comes in a 27.2mm size. I can live with that.

Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
Moves on needle bearings. No yaw or slop. No stiction.
Weaknesses:
Needle bearings may get dirt in them and you can't disassemble and clean or replace them. NOT USER SERVICABLE.

Bike Setup:
Litespeed Obed Hardtail
Bottom Line:For Y2K a huge improvement in the CODA suspension seatpost. The shaft is triangulated with needle bearings similar to their Headshok. Very smooth operation. Relatively light at 440 grams. Only 27.2 size. Will have to be careful not to let dirt into bearings. This is the only objection I see. Lack of user serviceability knocks it from being a 5 star product. Abolutely no yaw or play and excellent movement.

Date Reviewed: October 29, 1999
Duration Product Used:
2 Years
Strengths:
Sturdy. Great seat clamps.
Weaknesses:
Suspension works by lug and keyway method. Keyway binds when seatpost collar tightened enougnh to keep seat post from descending into seat tube. Turns into rigid seatpost !
Similar Products Used:
Post Moderne suspension seatpost.
Bike Setup:
Trek 930 SHX Judy XC and Coda suspension seatpost.
Bottom Line:Placement of lug positions needs to be reconsidered - higher or lower - away from the collar.

Strudy.
Weaknesses:
Yaws left and right while riding. Seat tube binder collar binds telescoping parts. Becomes rigid post.

Bike Setup:
Trek 930, Judy XC, supension seatpost.
Bottom Line:Feel insecure. Not much of a thudbuster if the collar is on tight enough to hold the post in the tube.

Duration Product Used:
6 months
Strengths:
Good travel
fits Cannondale without shims
Weaknesses:
creaks
seat rocks fore and aft up and down
Bike Setup:
Cannondale 900
upgraded fork
Bottom Line:when I first purchased the post it didn't have much travel so I disassembled it and lubed everything. Now it has excellent travel, very smooth.
Problem is that the seat rocks up and down and side to side. I ride with the seat pushed all the way back on the rails and that may have been a factor. Local shop has rock shox etc and coda has more travel. May try to re rivet the seat mount to the post to solidify the joint.
