Never had to pump it up or service it until the last two months. Truly was a set and forget product. Durable, I rode at least three times a week and trails around here are rocky. | | Weaknesses: | After I hung the buike upside down by the rims in the garage 2 months ago, the shock will hold pressure for only a few days. Older product, so it must be serviced at Cane Creek, if they still have parts for a rebuild. I don't know if they still support the product. | | Similar Products Used: | Fox RP3, Cane Creek AD-8 | | Bike Setup: | Schwinn s[9six]40 | | Bottom Line: | Cane Creek makes a solid, reliable product. I think the internals or seals have just worn out. As much as I have rode it and abused it, there has been virtually no maintenance over all these years. I will call Cane Creek to see if they will rebuild or replace seals at a reasonable cost. This shock is on my beater bike, so there is little reason to spend big bucks to upgrade. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$200.00 | | Purchased At: | The Motorcycle Shop | | Strengths: | Never leaks air Cake to lube/rebuild (no tools required) Widely tunable Upgradable to AD-12 Very light | | Weaknesses: | Intrinsic properties of air damping (beneficial in many cases) make tuning difficult if you treat it like an air/oil shock. | | Similar Products Used: | Fox Vanilla Fox Alps 4, 5, 5R Fox Float, Float R, Float RC Noleen NR2, Smart Shock
| | Bike Setup: | Klein Mantra frameset (97 comp frame), Full XTR (M950), King/517 wheels, RS Psylo SL | | Bottom Line: | Purchased July 2000. First maintenance came in April 2004. Shock never lost air between those dates (I changed the air pressure anually as I grew a good deal during those years). For some perspective on that... From 1997 to 2000 I went through 3 Vanilla coil shocks and 2 Alps air shocks. Also important to note is that I was much lighter from 1997 to 2000 than from 2000 to 2004.
The maintenance done in April 2004 consisted of an AD-12 conversion kit Cane Creek offers for 40 dollars (complete with seals, piston, and air chamber disc).
Pictures of the conversion here: http://homepage.mac.com/dgiessel/.Pictures/misc/AD10/
The performance of the shock over this 3.5 year period was nothing short of superb. I had tried Alps 4, 5, 5R, and Vanilla coil shocks on my Mantra and they were either too sticky (Alps) or totally unreliable (Vanilla). The 5R felt OK, but the Cane Creek was much better. I ran the stock chamber volume over this period (I have since gone to the most progressive setting allowing me to run lower pressures while still avoiding bottoming).
Some things to note about tuning the shock: The compression damping is more of a blow off valve than anything else...once the pressure in the main chamber reaches a certain value...air blows by the compression valve into the secondary chamber...the compression adjuster basically sets this threshold (it really doesn't behave as a oil compression adjuster does as with an oil shock, the damping medium is uncompressable and always flows by the piston). I leave mine all the way open and tune the compression response with air volume and pressure. Rebound speed is directly proportional to the amount of air blown into the secondary chamber during compression stroke. If you set the compression "damping" really stiff...air won't pass into the secondary chamber during the compression stroke, so rebound (no matter how soft you set it) will be very bouncy (the valve won't have any air to "stop" from going back into the main chamber). Leaving the compression damping open allows air pressures in both chambers to equalize on compression allowing the rebouind valving to trap more air in the secondary chamber (letting it bleed back into the primary chamber however quickly you desire). Bigger hits blow more air into the secondary chamber...so rebound is very slow. Smaller hits don't blow very much (in some cases zero) air into the secondary chamber...so rebound is quick. This is what Cane Creek means by "speed sensitive valving" and it is a very nice property of air damping (one must understand that the valving is applying damping to the spring medium to tune the shock properly however).
This shock is a dream if you put Slick Honey on it once a week (as I have done since the AD-12 conversion)...and if you decide to go 3.5 years without touching it...it will feel pretty damn good anyway.
Here are some additional pictures of how dead simple the maintenance is: http://homepage.mac.com/dgiessel/.Pictures/misc/AD12/ | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$100.00 | | Purchased At: | used, at auction | | Strengths: | Two things: The whole shock. The Service/support The shock is an elegantly engineered product with widely tunable, independent adjustments for Overall stiffness, compression damping, rebound damping, and progressiveness, WITHOUT CHANGING PARTS. Has the plush ride of a high-end progressive spring coil, WITHOUT ANY DISCERNABLE "TOP-OUT" FEELING. That’s due to the "zero-sticktion" design- at rest, you're actually hovering between two opposed air-springs, defeating sticktion and top-out in one brilliant structure. Tiny bumps get spring 'n return with no damping or detectable friction (Your frame pivots will make a very detectable difference when you lube 'em!). Medium and large bumps just get "eaten up" by the shock, the rebound damping completely eliminates bounce, you can put just a tiny bid of compression damping to stop pedal bob, for a super plush ride. Technical maniacs can pump it up, dial in the damping and have a stiff, boulder-eater that performs like a hard tail. All wearing surfaces are included in the $10 rebuild kit, so it can live forever.
The service: These guys still think of themselves as "small" - I know cause when I told the CS rep I was starting to actually feel guilty for all the help, parts (100% my fault - reading the simple, one-page direx is a good idea before slapping on a wrench and twisting away!), customizing tips, upgrade offers etc.- he said so. So they're motivated as hell to make anybody's troubles vanish. And with the product as good as it is, that's not hard to do. Now support is helping me to modify the length and throw of a used one to fit my frame. They'll make shocks any length - they'll upgrade your existing shock, throw out the old one, and build one to your spec, for a fair price.
| | Weaknesses: | Ha! Haven't even met anyone who's owned one w/out loving it. | | Similar Products Used: | Fox vaanilla | | Bike Setup: | $1500 mongoose $599 noleen crosslink elt, xt/xtr everything | | Bottom Line: | I bought a used one, and rebuilt it, even though it worked impressively after a 2 year furlough - - it's slicker'n snail snot now. Like your rear tire's on glass while you're front's on a trail. So I bought another. Same story. I hear the ad 12 is "even smoother" I don't know why they bothered.
Disclaimer: I am not now nor have I ever been an employee, dealer, friend or relative of same, etc etc of Cane Creek. I simply, from the point of view of a rider and an engineer, and a consumer, stand in awe of this product and company. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The trek y is obviously not a bob-free design, but with this shock adjusted just right and a nice even pedal stroke, I'm sitting pretty on any trail in Durango. Great stuff.
A few months ago it developed a weird sound at the end of the rebound, like it was topping out or something. I emailed cane creek and a new seal kit was in my mailbox a few days later. Customer Service Kudos. I took the thing apart myself, replaced the seals, and slapped it back together. $100.00 | | Purchased At: | Ebay auction | | Strengths: | The shock has infinite adjustability. A coilover would've required spring changes but,you jst chg air pressure. The comp/reb adjustmnts are more than most other shocks also. One shock feature also is the negative air chamber volume which changes the shock from progressive to linear springing. Most bikes(including motorcycles)hv to achieve this with a progressive shock link.Mechanical shock links are heavy and pressurized air is light.Light as air. | | Weaknesses: | Comp/Rebound adjustments could be easier to turn. The fitment on my Giant Warp DS1 just doesn't leave any clearance for your fingers or a regular allen wrench(I'll cut it shorter).I'd figure that all of the adjustments(scraeder valve air fill and comp/rebound adj screws)should be on the sides instead bcz all bikes have easy side access where their shocks mount.Laterally, the frame or swingarm will always be in the way on any bike. | | Similar Products Used: | Stock Giant shock adjustable for preload and rebound only | | Bike Setup: | Judy XC Hydracoil fork at mid travel adjustment (80mm) filled with Golden Spectro 'very light' cartridge fork oil -Shimano XT hydraulic disc brakes with a right/front MX setup-Coda Cranks-shorty DH billet aluminum stem with flat bars-Specialized BodyGeometry seat-Std Shimano DEORE driveline-Std WTB Tyrannoraptor 2.25X26 tires running abt 40psi front and 55psi rear | | Bottom Line: | It's responsiveness to the smallest bumps is absolutely incredible.I nvr thought any shock could be so complaint to small stuff while retaining the ability to take hard hits?Even at higher air pressures in the shock. They recommend 10psi over your bodyweight but I went with 40psi over and it still floated over bumps like buttah-I don't think I've got the negative air volume chamber where I want it bcz I think the shock reacts TOO progressively (springing firms up too much near full travel) to bumps when it gets past mid stroke but that can be adjusted out to preference very easily, even though it's an internal adjustment.Maybe a touch less progressive springing should sort it out.I was shocked how easily it was to break this shock down for self service. The internal adjustments to the negative air chamber as well as seal changes can be done by a retarded monkey without expensive special tools. That simplicity is a BIG plus for me.Getting the mounting bushings to make the shock fit my Giant(I got one 5mm longer at 170mm).They got it to me in a week but they charged me over 2X the $8 that they initially quoted on the phone order.I can't comment on their customer service regarding setup bcz I feel qualified to do it myself(I'm close with my settings w/in the first 3 rides bcz it's so simple to adjust)but they could do better when quoting parts prices.Shock pumps can be had anywhere for $30 so you can adjust the air-spring or for disassembly. My minor criticisms are only personal and not A-typical for every buyer. The absolute best shock for ANY D-Y-I kinda rider, like me.Ease of service or adjustments will be lost on the cream puff that always brings their bikes in for any service. All I have to say is WHERE CAN I GET AN AD-12 FOR $100??Have to give er straight five flamin chilis bcz the purchase price more than made up for everything else. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The best customer service I have ever encountered for anything. | | Weaknesses: | All of the magazines seem to pump up RockShox and Fox products. I suspect this is directly related to advertising revenue. Lack of lockout may upset some riders. To them, I say, go back to your hardtail. You're not losing as much pedal effort as you think if you have correctly tuned the air volume of the compression chamber to be progressive in nature. | | Similar Products Used: | RockShox SID. | | Bike Setup: | Gary Fisher Sugar-2. | | Bottom Line: | Everything you've read in these reviews is true. If you can resist the temptation of getting sucked up into the RockShox and Fox hype, buy the CaneCreek. I found the best way is to dial in a set amount of air pressure and play with your compression and rebound from there. I did have a problem with my AD-10, dunno if I got rooked on it or what when I bought it froma LBS, but I think it was a demo shock or something, but I blew something in the piston outa few weeks back, but this excellent company took care of everything for me, kudos to them, no questions asked just send it in they say..excellent I didn't buy it for the weight, I weigh 225 and it works very well for my weight As a side benefit, I increased the rear travel on my Mantra over 1.5" and you can definately feel it, even though tht eshock is the same length I'd highly recommend this shock to anyone who's eithe rlooking to get he mos tout of their suspension or wants to upgrade, don't let the size of the company fool you

On some frams (such as mine) the bike gets in the way of the rebound and compression adjustments. Not a big deal I supose but it could be made easier with a dial set up simmilar to a fox. It holds air well, stays smooth, and as of yet has required no maintanance. I must admit however I do wish it had a lock out feature. I didn't think I'd want one but road rides to the trail and sprints off the start line could really be spruced up with theb flick of a lever. $199.00 | | Purchased At: | Cambria Bicycle Outfitters | | Strengths: | User serviceable at home. Relatively lightweight compared to coil-overs. Wide range of adjustments. Progressive ramp up; difficult to bottom out. Backed by Cane Creek's great customer service. | | Weaknesses: | If it dies on the trail, I'm gonna be walking home. Even at $200, a little pricey. | | Similar Products Used: | Rock Shox Super Deluxe Coil | | Bike Setup: | Fisher 1996 Joshua 'Y', 1994 Joshua F4 | | Bottom Line: | My decision came down to a AD-10 or a Stratos Helix. The deciding factors were: no coil spring (not having to pick the correct spring rate for my weight and frame), lighter weight, and the at home serviceability. Service, support, price and reliability seemed about equal, with the Stratos having a slight edge in performance (what I've gathered from other MTBR posts).
Cane Creek didn't have my '96 frame listed as being compatable, but they did all the leg work to ensure I was set up properly. I again called on their customer support to check compatability with my new '99 frame, and for getting a new set of bushings sent to me. Had the shock required resizing or refitting for the new frame, the cost would have been $50.
The progressive rate of the shock is perfect for my frame. Pressure ramps up towards the end of the stroke, allowing me to run the shock a bit softer than my old Super Deluxe coil, without constantly bottoming out. Undamped, the AD-10 kicks back violently on high speed whoop-de-wooz. The rebound damping is very effective here. At slower speeds, suspension bob can be mostly dialed out with careful adjustment of compression and rebound damping.
This shock has entirely changed the character of my URT suspension. Whereas the Super Deluxe's single rebound adjustment can be likened to a suspension On/Off switch, the AD-10 offers a wide range of variation in the setup.
I tip the scales at 230 pounds, plus clothes and gear, and the AD-10 holds up well. I can go weeks at a time between recharges (between 6 and 8 rides). I've had no incidents of rapid pressure drops, strange noises, or great amounts of stiction. I've experimented with pressures as low as 180 and as high as 250 psi.
Overall, I've got to deduct one chili for price (come on, $200 is still a lot of money for a shock!), and one half chili for the Helix's greater "plushness" (oops, I gotta round up!). This would be an excellent choice for most XC and freeride needs. URT riders especially (Joshua, Trek Y) should look to this as the definitive upgrade for their ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This baby will take your performance level up a notch. I now take bigger drop offs and high speed rough spots with alot more confidence. When you take a big hit this shock just soaks it up and its great to know that you won't have to send it out for servicing. I pumped it up to about 290psi when I first got it and I haven't noticed a loss of pressure as of yet. It's very easy to tune with lots of options, compression, rebound and the size of the air chamber, not to mention the air spring. I have to admit that I rode the same frame with a Fox Vanilla air and thought that the Vanilla was smoother over the small stuff then the AD10. The vanilla air felt more like a coil spring shock on compression yet still had the control on rebound of an air shock. Well, I thought about buying a Vanilla after that ride, but common sense told me to play with the AD10 some more to get the desired ride quality. I fiddled with the size of the air chamber by increasing it, I lowered the amount of air in the main chamber and increased the rebound and compression slightly. I also regreased everything. This made the shock much more plush over the little stuff, still not a good as the Vanilla Air but close enough considering ease of rebuild and the reports of stellar service from Cane Creek. Plus the AD 10 is almost bullet proof, judging my experiences and others. I heard that Can Creek is coming out with an AD 12 which will have smoother surfaces and bushings for less stiction, that would be a nice improvement. It would be nice if the improvements can be retrofitted to the AD 10. Adding up customer service and support, reliability, adjustibility, and ease of service. This is a hard shock to beat. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The weight came off, and the ride got plush! For an air shock, this has surprisingly little stiction, and @ 195g is about the lightest thing out there.
The clearance of the air valve on my frame led me to do a bit of creative Dremel-ing to keep it from scraping paint off at full compression, and the fit on the mounting eyelets was really tight.
I took it apart a couple weeks ago, and it's clean as a whistle inside- the seals work good, and a bit of Englund Defriction Lube made things even better!
The only bummer is that it won't fit on my new Aeon frame! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

As I type, a new shock is on it's way to my local shop. Here's my story....
Yep, it's true, my AD-10 blew in a very dramatic fashion. On a downhill, BANG!. My buds in front of me thought I'd been shot. When I got to the bottom I shed a tear for my beloved AD-10. It was dangling in two pieces and an ugly sight. I slid the thing back together and limped the 6 miles out of the woods.
That was yesterday. Today I called Cane Creek and told my tale. I was told that what happened to me is very rare. Maybe it was a factory defect, maybe it was overdue for a rehaul, maybe a Trail Fairy jumped up and wacked it with her wand...who knows? The Bottom Line? It shouldn't have happened and my new replacement shock is on the way. I'll barely get my bike cleaned in time to put it on and my wallet will never leave my pocket. The damping adjustment knobs make a noticable difference when tweaked. Santa Cruz Heckler and Ventana El Fuego. It shines compared to anything else (dual suspension) I've mounted, and offers both great rebound/compression adjustability. I've not had to pump this shock as frequently as one might expect, despite my height 195 (not yet Clydesdale!) and very hard riding. Plush! | | Weaknesses: | No lock-out | | Similar Products Used: | Rock Shox SID. Vanilla Float RC. | | Bike Setup: | Two Dualies: 1. Ventana El Fuego. XTR build. 2. Santa Cruz Heckler, custom build (Dean, Race Face, XTR, SRP, SDG saddle, Easton bar, etc.). My real option was to make the Heckler a pseudo-Heckler Light with the ADDITION of a Cane Creek AD-10! | | Bottom Line: | Great, great shock for the money. Performs very well for any but all! If you are a racer and must have a lock-out for some easy climbs or straightaways...well...not for you. But for ANYONE else, this is it! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Me: 240 lbs, 6 ft. | | Bottom Line: | I'm big and I ride nasty steep rock gullies in rural Philippines. After 10 years on a hardtail, the AD-10 is a revelation. I was worried about climbing ability but me and my buds won our very first team mountain bike eco-challenge last month, including a steep climb. On downhills the AD-10 give you a lot of confidence because the wheel stays nicely planted. I think the pressure recommendations err a bit o the hard side. At 225-250 lbs pressure, its a bit harder ride than necessary. I can still climb efficiently with 175 lbs pressure despite my size. No doubt this is partly due to frame geometry bu the AD-10 really is there when you need it, and absent when you don't. The over the counter price is right, unlike SID which is charging you about 30% markup for their cheese.

| | Weaknesses: | adjustment by hand could be easier | | Similar Products Used: | Proflex MCU(prehistoric);RockShox:Superdeluxe(heavy trash); Fox:Alps 5R(So,so),Vanilla TC(the best) | | Bike Setup: | Turner XCE;SID 100;Tune wheelset;Geax tires;Easton carbon riser bar;Syncros forged crankset, post, stem | | Bottom Line: | Very light. It's 250g at 165mm lenght.Typical 165mm coil shocks are about 500g . Compression and rebound damping are truly adjustable. There's still some room for improvement though:making adjustments requires a 4mm allen key and adjustments during rides would be quicker and in case of a Turner without dismounting if one could do this by hand. The air spring makes optimum rider weight setup possible for every person. It's sturdy and lo maintenance.I don't have to pump it up every other ride or so.Mine never leaks at 165PSI. Suspension performance is impressive. No stiction whatsoever.Soaks up small and big stuff alike. No spikes or harsh bottoming.Super on square edged hits like roots etc. Performance is almost on par with my Fox TC which i consider to be the best rear damper yet. The manual is very detailed and,a welcome surprise, even has a dutch translation. Quality and attention to detail(the soft fleece bag)is the best.Supersmooth shock surface and bushings & spacers with precise fitting all add up to this conclusion. 5 chilis for value. It's definitely a step up from where most shocks are at the moment. 5 chilis overall. The AD-10 is a great rear shock. It's versatile, dependable, light and performs with the best. Get one!!

Mustang Asym wheels. | | Bottom Line: | This shock is great. It makes a good compliment to my Z-1 Alloy up front. It's highly tunable, easly to work on (can be rebuilt by most average bike mechanic consumers in about 45 min.) and is very durable (I weigh 215). This thing took over 1/2 pound off the bike from my Rock Shock, has superior performance and I don't need to send it to a shop or even worse, a factory to have it worked on. The people at Cane Creek are "A+ Number One" in customer service and support. I feel like I have a company behind my shock and the best part of all, it gives me a really great rid...what else could you ask for!!!! Top Shelf!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

If you have a RS deluxe and are looking for a good upgrade, this is it. It is inexpensive and it will vastly improve the quality of your ride. Set it firm for climbing or soft for bombing. The main strength is customer support. I called 3 times for different reasons and all 3 times excellent support. 1) I ripped a gasket..got a new one in 3 days 2)A bushing was loose from Santa Cruz and they sent me new bushings. 3) The bushings needed to be pressed in so I sent the shock back and they pressed the bushings in, rebuilt the shock, put new stickers on the shock and threw in a couple of stickers. Now that's product support. Never really cared for the rockshox line. Now I know why, Not built as well and cost more money. This Cane Creek AD-10 made a dramatic differace on my sweet spot fame. I got more travel and alot more adjustability. My bike feels like a cadillac now. Not to mention It got my full suspension at a little over 25 lbs. The damping controls do make a difference and you can change the internal volume which changes the feel of the shock from firm to super plush. $10 gets you a rebuild kit from CC and makes the shock just like new. I can't understand why there are other air shocks on the market still. I see that Trek is specing them on VRX's this year which is a god call. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Made by Cane Creek | | Weaknesses: | Nothing yet | | Similar Products Used: | Fox vanilla....a piece of heavy crap, which simply deflated like an old Christmas balloon within a year. Impossible to adjust without lots of muscle....just poor quality. | | Bike Setup: | Jamis Dakar Pro - Marzocchi Z1 XFly - Easton Carbon bars - Ibis titanium stem - SRP carbon cranks and bottom bracket - Race Face chain rings - XTR front and rear derailleurs - XTR titanium rear cassette - Cane Creek AD10 rear shock - Dean titanium seat post - WTB S98 saddle on titanium rails -White Industries hubs laced by DT Revolution spokes to Sun XO Light polished rims - Avid Extreme brake system - XTR combo shifter/levers | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is that this feels strong and does the job. It IS light, almost to the point of feeling flimsy....but is certainly not. Beautifully made and presented. Cost wise it is about right; although since Fox has decided not to sell to the general public (duh) and Rockshox SID rear shocks have miniscule travel...there is really no contest.
Last but certainly not least... the customer service at Cane Creek is absolutely great. Helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. Was talking to Peter Gilbert at 3p.m. and the Fedex man was knocking on my door at 9.00 a.m. the following morning with my stuff.

from berkeley, ca Date Reviewed: June 5, 1998 | | Bottom Line: |
I just upgraded after trashing the fox vanilla x on my bike. the fox was very...vanilla, but the ad-10 is awesome. lighter than a brain tissue sample from a blonde, and the manual with exploded diagram and concise tuning instructions is easy to follow. If you call tech support, they return your calls. It works great, smooth stroke, not stiction laden at all. adjustable compression and rebound that really adjust. The only down side was that the supplied bushing were 12.69 mm diameter and felt sloppy. Luckily, the Fox bushings, at 12.71 mm fixed that problem handily, although the small end bushing had to be turned down to give an extra 2 mm width to work. I got the cane creek pump with it, and it works great. You don't really need an accufil adaptor. After a few fills, you'll know how much air escapes upon unscrewing the pump, about 10-15 psi, so just overfill by that amount. | Overall Rating: |
