Date Reviewed: November 27, 2006
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Who's Kidding who here. These wheels are bullet proof. I am 230 lbs and ride hard. If you have broken these rims or hubs, you are either lying are don't know hor to ride. I ride two-three times per week and have not had a single problem. I ride tough rocky trails full of roots and some fairly big drops.
Weaknesses:If anything overbuilt, thus a bit heavy for the lighter rider, but for a heavy rider, these are perfect.
Bike Setup:Specialized Epic Pro, full XTR, SID Race. Avid ti V-brakes
Bottom Line:Great wheel set for the price. Tough as nails and a great set that will take anything you throw at them

Strengths:Looks good, decent package wheel for a $600 bike.
Weaknesses:None.
Bike Setup:Trek 6500 SLR (2003)
Bottom Line:For daily commuting and occasional weekend singletrack these wheels are fine. Would buy something stronger if I planned on doing the tough stuff every week, rather than trashing them and then moaning about why my low to mid level wheels couldn't take weekly abuse on the West Tyson end of the Chubb.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:OEM
Strengths:Sturdy and reliable
Weaknesses:Probably a bit heavy, like everything else that came on this bike
Bike Setup:Trek Y3 8 speed, Jett fork
Bottom Line:After 5 years I have no complaints with these wheels. I ride in a fair amount of mud and I went years without cleaning the hubs, they never complained. I've hardly had to do any truing on them either. I weigh 160 and do agressive cross country, no big drops. A good, solid, reliable ride.

Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:Used
Strengths:Smooth hub bearings, high rim sidewall
Weaknesses:Heavier
Similar Products Used:lx/517 wheelset
Bike Setup:KHS Steel softail
Bottom Line:Borrowed these from a friend to try the bontrager tubeless rimstrips that are available for $5 each from your bontrager dealer. Front rim worked great with homemade sealant. Rear rim (asym) wouldn't work with the tubeless rim strip, so I stretched a 20" BMX presta tube over the rim (cut down the middle so it sticks out both sides after you mount the tire) and it sealed even better than the front with the Bontrager strip. It's a great tubeless wheelset on the cheap!

Couldn't find a review spot for the bontrager tubeless rim strips, so more comments here: Wonderful product designed for wider cross-country rims. I couldn't get it to work with 517's due to the narrow rim (21.8 outer measurement). I think the bontrager strip will work with any symmetrical rim wider than about 22.5. The bontrager rims (mustang tubeless) they're actually designed for are around 23.5 or so.

Weaknesses:Can't handle roots, rocks or anything mildly extreme
Similar Products Used:None yet, but hopefully a new wheelset really soon
Bottom Line:Don't buy these if you consider yourself a Mt. biker. Unfourtantly they come on the trek 4900, which is a great bike. Upgrade, upgrade, upgrade! I give them two chilis because they did make through some rough times.

Strengths:STAYED TRUE!! In one year of hard riding I only had to have the wheel trued once... spokes stay tight. VERY RIGID
Weaknesses:Fairly heavy, but not bad. VERY prone to pinch flats. For a while it seemed I was getting them once a week or so.
Similar Products Used:Rolf Dolomite
Bike Setup:Used to be: Trek 4900 w/RS Duke Race, XTR rear -Had the Corvair tires on here (stock).
Now: Trek STP200 w/RS Duke Race, XTR rear. Everything else is stock and I'm loving it.
Bottom Line:Great Wheels to come Stock on a $500 bike. While I had the wheel set I was VERY impressed by the durability of the wheel. The only two downsides where (1)Weight (2)Pinch flats. Other than that they performed like an absolute DREAM. These would be a very nice extra wheel set for a cheap price! Just remeber to bring the patch kit and a hand pump. :)

But the rear was a nitemare. Hub was making funny noise. went to the shop three times, still no luck. The rim by that time was ok. Then hub started to sound like a pepper grinder. Purchased At:bike doctor of Arnold, with bike
Strengths:I have a twin brother who rolls Mavic x138 wheels and we ride together all the time. We really like fast, rocky, technical stuff. His wheels have needed truing and he's had problems with the brakepads rubbing because the wheel was not true. I have ridden the EXACT same terrain right at his side and my wheels are perfectly true
Weaknesses:I dont know whether it is the wheel or not but something about my bike makes the rear tube pop pretty often. I am pretty quick when it comes to changing/patching tubes, because I've gotten my fair share of practice.
Similar Products Used:None. This was, like many of the reviewers, my first "real bike"
Bike Setup:Trek 6000 with Grimeca System 8 hydraulic disk brake(front) and soon to have a Manitou X-VERT super.
Bottom Line:I have never had a problem with these wheels, unless the tire popping can be attributed to the wheel design. I dont know that it can though.

Strengths:Price, Stays True, Durable
Weaknesses:Hubs wear out FAST with hard riding. Flex like a son of a batch.
Similar Products Used:Sun Ringle RPM & Various Mavic rims on XT hubs
Bottom Line:These are my spare wheels. When I corner hard I can actually hear the front wheel flex so much that it makes contact with my brake pad. I wore out the rear one in less than a year. I have no complaints at all about the rims, people rag on them but they dont ave any Idea what they are saying. I ride the chit out of them and have bottomed out my shock and blown out tires from smashing into rocks and boulders but the rims stay true. I think if they were built a little better in the hub and spoke department they would really be a fabulous wheelset.

Ill give em 4 and 2

Strengths:Survived a couple 24 hr races, 1 enduro and 2-1/2 summers of rocky rides on the Colorado front range. These rims are tough when set-up properly. No problems with breaking surface when paired with XT brakes and Aztec pads.
Weaknesses:Some corrosion inside after 2 yrs around nipples. Alumimum nipples strip easy. Hubs severly worn after 2 yrs. Also front hub requires 18mm wrenches.
Similar Products Used:Generic Sun rims on old Cannondale.
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Big Sur with Bonty hubs.
Bottom Line:Riding the front range and the rockies, I have hit some big rocks with these rims and they have held strong and true. After two+ years (~1000+mi) I am looking to replace my whole wheelset due to wear and corrosion. If they come with your bike these are great rims for the price, but, don't miss maintenance on the bonty hubs, I am not sure what they are made of, but, they wear fast.

Bottom Line:These are good stock wheelset, nice radial laced front rims (28 holes), and asym rear (32 holes). The wheelset is able to deal easily with downhill if properly tuned (tight alot the spokes). The hubs are Bonty's quality; just had to change the rear hub cone after a year (there's no seal like Shimano's). They don't need a lot of truing (but i'm doing freeride so... i swear it's not a rim who will stop my ride)Have to change the rear rim because it's cracked and I want discs. But this wheelset is the only thing I haven't changed yet on the bike, so it might be tough!

Bike Setup:Trek 6000
Bottom Line:The Corvairs came stock on the Trek 6000. They are pretty good for stock equipment on a moderately priced mountain bike. They have machined rims that hold up to some hard riding, brake pretty well and the hubs are reasonably smooth and durable. The hubs also have a nice clicking sound. I only replaced them to lighten the rotational mass on my bike. I have kept them for future use though. Overall, 4 stars.

I have probably put about 1000+ miles on the rims. I have had to true them a couple of times, but part of problems was that my tire pressure was to low. I bent the rim twice in three weeks - but mainly due to riding low pressure tyres over the rocks. Changed tyrew to WTB nanoraptors 2.40 so no rim problem anymore. Had to replace 4 spokes the other day but after 2000 miles off road that is quite good going I think. Havent checked the brake surface but I guess they will wear through eventually. Bottom Line:Strong & light, but not robust.
Paint finish looks worn due to corrosion under the paint.
Cones required replacement after 5 months due to massive amounts of pitting...trying to get replacements has proven impossible in the UK after 6 weeks of having them on order & still waiting. They got the manufactoring all wrong with the rims....putting the paint finish on them and THEN drilling/punching the spoke holes is crap.....it starts the paint lifting, water gets underneath and the next thing, the paint is flaking off.
I managed to get a new pair of wheels under warranty, and having looked at them, I suspect these will suffer the same paint-lifting problem.......
WHY ARE THERE NO SPARE CONES/BEARINGS IN THE UK????.....
I would use shimano, but they have a different contour & not interchangable.
Strong/true rims, that suffer excessive corrosion, bearings/cones made of soft lead!
