Strengths:Stopping power is great.
Weaknesses:Like others, I've had problems with the rear brake vibrating under a load. Avid told me to use organic pads and their new rotor (G3 SS). They said they send these to my LBS at no cost. Oil also began leaking from my front brake lever. I have no idea what caused this, though I now have to rebleed the brake. Pain in the arse.

Bottom Line:Brakes this expensive should be problem-free. I doubt I'll buy another set.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:stock w. MB Fantom T
Strengths:Sturdy, front works great, light.
Weaknesses:Rear is impossible to adjust, vibration and noise renders it barely useable
Bike Setup:XC rig
Bottom Line:I'm a heavy (215) rider who spends as much time going up as down, but I like to rip it up on the down (who doesn't)? But after a few months of truly mindblowing performance, the rear brakes started to scream and shake. I thought maybe I'd banged them up, but no. I changed pads, no help. I changed the rotor, no help. I took the whole thing apart and put it back together. No joy. I went to every LBS in town. No good. I sought out the best brake guy in northern China, like some kind of guru (seriously). No help. I'm gonna have to dump them, it's a crying shame.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $225.00
Purchased At:online
Strengths:Strong
Weaknesses:***Please read**** There is a common but rarely reproted problem with these. After a couple months of hard riding, the rear brake begins to vibrate so intesely during moderate to heavy breaking that it becomes useless. I'm told that Avid will have an improved rotor at some point but at the moment there is no solid fix reported by anyone using these. I have taken my bike to 4 different LBSs and no one can solve the issue.
Similar Products Used:XTR Juicy 7
Bike Setup:2007 Yeti ASR SLc
Bottom Line:Really, really wish this problem was more widely reported before I purchased the brakes. I would rather have spent my money on something else. Maybe if you are light weight and don't ride fast these brakes could be good for you but if you ride hard and fast, the rear will not last.

Favorite Trail:Any place with redwoods
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $160.00
Purchased At:JensonUSA.com
Strengths:Powerful brakes that are very easy to control. Easy to install and adjust. Aesthetically pleasing shape and finish, especially the red anodizing. Very useful adjustments for lever range and contact point. Comfortable lever with effortless pull. Huge confidence builder.
Weaknesses:Pads are noisy when the caliper is out of adjustment. Luckily, the caliper is super easy to adjust.
Similar Products Used:Avid SD 1.9 V-brakes and Avid BB5 mechanical disk. Neither is in the same league as the Avid Elixir CR.
Bike Setup:1998 S-20 Carbon, full suspension, cross country. Stock except for Mavic CrossRide wheels, red Panaracer 2.1 tires, and a Specialized 155 saddle.
Bottom Line:I replaced my front Avid SD 1.9 V-brake with the new, 160mm Avid Elixir CR...

No comparability. I'm 180bs, and the old v-brake setup usually stopped with a firm 2-3 fingers effort. I frequently locked up the front wheel on descents in loose terrain. Brake fade was inevitable on longer descents.

The Elixir CR has never required more than a single digit's worth of pull, and since installation I have yet to lock up the front wheel unintentionally. I can't believe how good the feedback is. I'm amazed every time I pull that feathery lever.

Rolling stoppies are easier than ever!

I gave it 5 out of 5 for value because I did not pay 200, just 160 dollars, including shipping.

It gets 5 for overall because it has boosted my confidence tremendously. The added confidence has translated into higher speed because I'm certain these brakes will slow me quickly and safely, with no drama, every time.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:came with set-up
Strengths:stopping power, decent modulation, fairly quiet
Weaknesses:pad life if used outside of XC riding, use of DOT fluid
Bike Setup:SC Nomad2, Fox 36 Van
Bottom Line:Roached the rear pads after 2 normal XC rides and one downhill day. Decided to upgrade to a real all-mountain brake system in the Shimano Saint. I still don't get why Avid loves using DOT fluid instead of mineral oil...much easier to use mineral oil without the corrosive nature of DOT fluid. It's also much easier to find replacement pads for Shimano...not every bike shop is going to have the Avid pads, but chances are they'll have Shimano.

Bang for the buck, they're OK, just don't use 'em downhillin or all-mountain and expect good pad life...XC they'd probably be fine. I partially blame SC for putting 'em on an all-mountain bike (which for me at 145lbs is a downhill bike).

Strengths:Strengths:
-Great Modulation
-No Fading on big descents
-Awesome Looking design
-Taperbore Technology is nice

Weaknesses:As with all brakes, you begin to worry about the longevity of the brake system. Bleeding these brakes can be somewhat of a hassle the first 2 or 3 times.
Similar Products Used:Formula Oro Puro's and Formula "The Ones"
Bike Setup:Ibis Mojo
Bottom Line:I basically had bought these brakes due to the fact that they are a new concept for 2009 and that they had a lot of adjustments, which made it easy to dial in to my liking. I prefer brakes that you can actually control pad contact, reach, etc. These are great brakes for the price and I feel like they are very comparable to Formula brakes. I've ridden with Formula for quite some time now. Mainly the K24's and Bianco's, but I feel like Avid made a lot of issues with the Juicy 7's go away with this new brake line. I didn't try the Ultimates because of availability, but since buying these Elixir's, I don't think that I'll look back. Great buy!

Bottom Line:I've been using mechanicals for a long time. Had some XTR 960 hydros, and some Hayes back in the day. Never was a fan of them. When they worked, they were great, when they didn't, they sucked. These are simply put the best brakes I've had on any bike of mine in the last 15 years (granted, i've ridden them less than a month). Strengths:STRONG, VERY STRONG. Awesome lever feel. Pretty light. Also they look sweet.
Weaknesses:Pad contact point adjustment is giving me a little trouble, also I have a bit of drag and can't seem to get it to go away. But nothing serious. Oh and when they get wet they sound like a locomotive horn. At least hikers know you are coming.
Similar Products Used:Hayes Stroker Ryde, Shimano XT.
Bike Setup:Cannondale Rize 4 upgraded.
Bottom Line:I think these brakes are awesome. I didn't know how good modulation could be until I got these. My XTs were good on the modulation but not as good, and the XTs were nowhere near strong enough for me. I lock these up with 1 finger, or launch myself into the nearest bush, with ease. They have a smooth ramp up to max stopping power, and it is consistent, no jerky grabbing or lurching.

Only bothers are in the Weaknesses box. The rubbing will just take adjusting so I am not worried about it. When wet even though they make noise they do not sacrifice power, that is a comfort to me.

All in all they are great, light enough to help keep my bike weight in check for the commuting I do, but strong enough for hours of trail fun. I don't do downhilling so I can only attest to the XC/AM use of them. But no matter what your style at the end of the day they do what it says on the box...brake.

Strengths:POWER, NO FADE. Killer strong brake with zero fade. Never fear brake fade again......
Weaknesses:Stiff lever action. Compared to Hope, Formula, or Shimano the lever action is stiff. The Elixir is not a "one finger" brake, compared to the above. Ya, ya....weak fingers bla bla. I work in construciton and dont lack the strength to pull the lever. The standard has been set for "light" lever one finger brakes and this generation of Elixirs dont live up.

Bottom Line:endless power and no fade. a real strong brake.

I think Avid has more potential and ability than this though.

Lighten the pull at the lever and this will be THE brake to own, especially considering how cheap these are (is that good thing?).

Bottom Line:Excellent, Avid got it right. These brakes are very powerful. They have the power of the Avid Code brakes with the weight of Avid Juicy Ultimates. I am a big man and I feel like they could stop a train. The reach adjustment is simple and elegant from a design standpoint. They are good for both big and small hands. Pad adjustment is just as easy. Setup is a breeze. I just mount the caliper, squeeze and hold the lever and tighten the bolts. Voila! A turn or two on the pad adjuster and I am good to go with no drag and no noise. The only time these brakes have made noise is when they get wet and that only lasts for a few seconds. There has been no fade at all.

I am sorry everyone else had to pay so much but performance and weight wise they are better than anything else in the price range.

Strengths:Unbelievably light and smooth. The modulation and pad engagement are both adjustable on the fly, and the engagement is powerful yet gradual. Caliper adjustment is simple for hydraulic brakes. Sharp looking.
Weaknesses:None. Pricey, yes, but you get what you pay for.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XTR B960 hydraulic. Avid BB7 mechanical disc. Too many rim brakes to count.
Bike Setup:Moots Smoothie full suspension, Crossmax SL wheels, Rockshox World Cup carbon fork, XTR drivetrain, etc.
Bottom Line:I couldn't believe how nicely these brakes engage. They're powerful (you don't have to apply the levers very hard or far to get full stopping power), even in the rain, yet there's no possibility of locking up unexpectedly and doing an endo, even in panic stops. Don't ask me how they do it, but the engagement curve is perfect. I've used them half a year, and they still work like new. I believe Avid makes a more powerful brake for downhillers and freeriders; this one is perfect for demanding cross-country and no slouch on descents. Best brake I've ever used.

Strengths:Braking, modulation, strength, looks, adjustment, cost, installation, 1 digit braking, light weight, strength, strength, jesus these things stop good.
Weaknesses:pad adjustment/positioning labeled backwards, I read in the manual that damage to the inline pad positioning barrel adjuster is not serviceable and requires replacement of the entire master cylinder lever assembly.
Similar Products Used:Hayes Stroker, Hayes Mag XC, Magura (?), Formula K18, 6 and 7" rotors, Shimano XT hydraulic, Juicy 7
Bike Setup:Mountain Cycle Moho Slix, Fox Talas RLC, PUSH'd Fox RL, Sram, Cane Creek Zonos, etc. etc., way to much $ in aftermarket upgrades
Bottom Line:Get them. Price to performance is incredible. In the 7" setup, no howling, or squeeling, and the modulation is outstanding compared to everything I've tried. The closest thing is the Formula K18 and K24 which I almost got, but I'm not sure I can tell the difference. But I know my wallet sure can. Very easy install with great features for 'dialing it in'. The normal Elixir series does not have the pad positioning adjustment. And I probably could of lived without it save $100 but I have definitely used it in the initial setup. And I was happy I had it, and I'll be happy it's there when I change the pads. Long 4000 foot descents in the past have left my 2 fingers hurting from the brake, and made me stop to shake out my hands in the past. I use the tip of 1 digit of 1 finger for the same descent and don't notice ANY fatigue or fade at all, without stopping. NONE WHATSOEVER! This is by far the best purchase I've ever made for my bike. I'm a strong aggressive XC rider, and these would be perfectly capable for amatuer downhill racing. There are much heavier 8" style products that are a lot more expensive that would work for heavier duty downhill racing, but these are perfect for their market: aggressive XC and all mountain that don't shy away from serious downhill fun. GET THEM!

Strengths:Tremendous adjustability. Good power and modulation. Works well for DH and XC. Good looks. Easy to set up compared with my Marta SL set.
Weaknesses:Those with very large hands may find it difficult to get the lever far enough from the grip. Otherwise, none found so far.
Similar Products Used:M765 XT Disc. Marta SL, Avid BB.
Bike Setup:Ellsworth Epiphany.
Bottom Line:I am relatively new to the So. Cal. more aggressive DH style riding so I need a strong brake that's easy to modulate with no fade or mush. BTW, I weigh around 180. I was previously using XT disc and had no significant issues with them. My Epiphany came with Marta SL brakes. These are beautifully made brakes and are VERY light, but just aren't designed for extended downhill runs, as they become mushy and less predictable. I switched to the Elixir CR (carbon levers). They went on easily and the black and red matched my bike perfectly. Within two rides, I was sold on the adjustability, modulation and power of these brakes (185 front and 160 rear). I will come back later if these brakes fail to live up to expectations and re-rate them, as I usually don't score things 5 and 5.

Get these if you are looking for do-everything, reasonably light brakes that are powerful.

Don't get these if you are looking for the lightest brakes around or don't need as much power.

Strengths:Light, good power/modulation. Easy to install and adjust, worked perfect first time out and continues to. Pad contact adjustment works great.
Weaknesses:Still trying to get more pad/rotor gap in the front, slight rubbing. A bit pricey, but it is decked out with carbon levers and anodized fittings. Reach adjustment knob is hard to turn.
Similar Products Used:Shimano v's, Avid BB7 mech, Avid Juicy 7s.
Bike Setup:Ellsworth Truth '01, SRAM XO, CrossMaxSL, Fox100x, Maxxis UST tubeless.
Bottom Line:Having run the 1st generation Juicy 7's for the past few years, disc brakes have come a long way in terms of easy installation and adjustment. Rotors actually came perfectly flat, no need to true!

The Elixirs were a dream to install and bleed. The top inserting pads are a no brainer to install. Pad contact adjustment actually works, with noticeable increments of adjustment. The reach knob is a bit hard to turn however.

Minor but have noticed slight sponginess at the lever, not sure if it's due to the brake lines or bleeding. My Juicy's had a nice positive pad contact feel at the lever, which I attribute partially to using Goodridge brake lines.
