from Caracas, Venezuela Date Reviewed: June 11, 2006 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Strengths: | Light, great stopping Power. Even in heavy rain conditions; no matter if it's dry or mud, they will stop you. Better if you are ridding a hrad tail, rather than a FS bike. | | Weaknesses: | Original pads are not good enough, and they are hard to find and expensive. try kool stop, dual compound if it's possible, and you will see how hard they will stop you. | | Similar Products Used: | Shimano XT, LX, Deore and STX-RC V's. And a sort of cantilevers such as Dia Compe, Shimano and many others. Don't like discs. | | Bike Setup: | Hard tail, Manitou Mars Elite, Avid Ti, Race Face, etc, etc | | Bottom Line: | This is my second review on same product. I bought a new lightweight frame, to replace a very old proflex reptile. I kept few components from my old bike, among them there were these Avid V's. I change Rim Ranglers pads and bought Kool Stop dual Compound. Before this I was thinking to buy Disc brakes, now I don't even think about it. Excellent stopping power, even in heavy rain conditions; no matter if there mud or sand, theyt will stop you. But be sure you discard rim rangler pads, and change them by kool stop ones, dual compound if it's possible. my brother in law ride a Trek Fuel EX9 with hydraulic XT brakes, and stopping power is almost the same, in spite I'm 6" foot tall and almost 180 pounds, and he is 5"6 and 150 pounds. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$80.00 | | Purchased At: | Online | | Strengths: | Great stopping ability, easy install, easy adjustment, no noise from pads, etc.. | | Weaknesses: | Durability & serviceability | | Similar Products Used: | Many different V-brake setups | | Bike Setup: | Giant NRS | | Bottom Line: | I was very happy with these V-brakes when new, however like the XT V-brakes I had before these they became almost completely unusable after a year.
The main pivots/bushings for the brake arms simply become contaminated and corroded, eventually causing the arms to require more and more force, at which point the return springs cannot open the brakes anymore.
I specifically bought these hoping they would be better due to the Ti and other materials which should resist corrostion, but they failed in about a year. There was no way to disasemble the pivots for a clean + regrease, which is not acceptable IMO in any of these high end V-brakes. Any mud/water/sand/salt which contaminates the brakes is going to eventually kill them. This is especially problematic on the rear brake, the front brake is somewhat more shielded by the fork.
This is not an Avid failing per se but it is very annoying. In the end I decided to go with cheap V-brakes until I get get discs, if I have to replace them I might as well go cheap and replace them more often to keep a higher average level of performance. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

These arent disc brakes and shouldnt be considered as replacments for high end discs but for v brakes these are really amazing, I certainly wont worry about stopping power on fast decents anymore. The simplicity of the whole system is really great coming from the slightly overcomplicated shimano v brake system. For a non disk rider like myself (I'm not spending that much on a 7 year old bike) these are pretty much tops. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The rear brake is like no brake at all. | | Bike Setup: | Titus Ti RacerX, Manitou Skareb super, XT shifters, crank, Chris King headset, Salsa stem, Easton seatpost, DT swiss wheels, hubs Maxxis ranchero tires. | | Bottom Line: | Before I go into full review...I have to admit I have Avid FR 1 brake levers so maybe that is the true problem. I haven't been able to engage my rear brake cleanly except the first rides after new brake pads. That's it. I weigh in at 105 lbs so I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem to have some responsiveness. I hate relying on my front end to stop. I'm changing the brake levers and if that doesn't make things right I'm going to disc, Magura Marta SL....I want to enjoy my downhills going fast...not doing damage control trying to control my speed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I love the way they look. I love the Titanium hardware. I love the weight. I hate the performance. I have these brakes set up perfectly and I am still very unhappy with them. The titanium hardware is the best plus in my book with these brakes which goes hand in hand with the weight. Even properly torqued, the pin that fits into the brake boss snapped off the brake on my rear brakes so that one arm will not return because the spring is not ineffective. Pretty upsetting for a product that gets so much praise. In my opinion, this product is not well engineered and I am dissapointed with the performance. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

There was not a catagory for it so I placed it in this section. This setup replaces a three year old AVID Ti brakeset I was using. I ordered this one from Price Point as I liked the look of the brake levers better (call that a whim). When I installed them, I was very suprised at how much better they work than the older AVID Ti's. This setup works as well as my AVID Ultimates I have on another bike. If you are considering the Ultimates and can afford them, buy them for their great looks and performance. They are worth the money. If you want a setup that works just about as well for less money consider the AVID SL's. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$30.00 | | Strengths: | Light weight. Maybe I can strip the Ti parts of them to put on my XTR V's. | | Weaknesses: | Not enough power, too much spring. | | Similar Products Used: | XTR V's, XT V's, Avid Arch Rival Mag, Formula Discs | | Bike Setup: | SC Superlight | | Bottom Line: | UUGH! I thought I'd try these out since everyone is raving about them and got them on sale for $30 ea. Also I liked the idea of saving a little more weight. After a couple of rides...I hate them. There's way too much spring, making lever pull harder than it needs to be and there's not enough power. I just couldn't get these to work as nice as my XTR V's. This is the third time I've tried something other than my XTR's (Avid Arch Rival Mags, Formula Discs, and now Avid Ti's) and everytime I go back to the XTR's. Sorry for doubting you XTR. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

They seem to have more thought put into them than XTR...plus they are lighter! The pad adjustment screw is a 3mm allen and not the Philips head bolt. That seems insignificant, but its a small detail that I much prefer. They puppies are solid, the wire clamp is more secure than XTR, the levers are more customizable. Very good product and you can find them cheaper than the XTR stuff. Good work AVID. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$59.00 | | Purchased At: | local shop | | Strengths: | Now I kinda like the funky copper color. Pretty light. Take a little more time to dial in. | | Weaknesses: | BEFORE YOU BUY - Avid should remove the word "Ti" from the brake parts since the actual brake parts are aluminum. Only the bolts that hold them on are titanium and you can do the same thing with your XT and XTR's. Very misleading. | | Similar Products Used: | XT | | Bike Setup: | santacruz, xt, xtr, raceface | | Bottom Line: | Not a bad buy for the buck. Work well. A little more adjustment than standard pads. Same color as these awesome Avid brakes. And these Avid Ti's are light. I didnt weigh them, but they're lighter than XT, that's for sure. These brakes make only a little noise when water and mud get in between the pad and the rim. Give the wheel a half dozen more rotations and the noise stops. I now have the Avid Ti's (& SD7 levers and Ride On cables) on my project bike and they ALMOST stop as well as the discs. I've only used them on one ride on the trails, but I am very impressed with the stopping power of these babies. I've never installed and dialed in a set of brakes before, but I think I have them just about perfect. I didn't hear them at all the entire ride until I went spashing through a creek crossing. Even then, they were pretty effective. I bought the brakeset used (but brand-new in the box so I guess it'd be second hand), so the price was right. If you don't have chang to get the Ti's, get the SD7's - I've heard they're just as awesome but without the titanium. So the bottom line of the bottom line is that these babies are sweet and if you can get a good deal on them, buy 'em. If not, go with the SD7's. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$45.00 | | Purchased At: | Jenson USA | | Strengths: | Strong Performers; Quiet; Simple design — no moving linkages; Good tire clearances; Come with Rim Wrangler 2 pads; Gotta love that copper color. | | Weaknesses: | A tad expensive(?); QC problem with 1st set. | | Similar Products Used: | Shimano XT V's; Cane Creek Direct Curve 2's; Avid Arch Rival 50. | | Bike Setup: | Fisher Joshua, Avid Mag Levers, Avid Disc Front. | | Bottom Line: | I chose these SD series brakes for the wrong reason: I don't give a rat's butt about the Titanium parts/weight savings. I wanted the copper brakes to match my copper levers (ridiculous, but it floats my boat). These are the equivalent to the Avid SD 7's (about a $20 price difference).
Out of the box from JensonUSA (retail, not OEM packaging), there were 2 QC problems. (1) The rivet holding the linkage cage (the black cage that retains the noodle) was deformed. The rivet head was bent over and gouging the cage, causing excess friction. (2) The titanium mounting bolts were mysteriously missing from the packaging (probably Jenson's fault — they said they'd drop some in the mail).
After some slow email correspondence with Avid Tech support, a brief email to Dennis V. at Avid quickly rectified the problem. He exchanged my brake arms with new ones, and even sent me the missing Ti bolts (which never did arrive from Jenson). Except for the initial hiccup, very good customer service, as I expect with Avid.
The Rim Wrangler 2 cartridge pads are a nice update to the originals. The have a slightly lower profile — about 2 or 3mm narrower than the RW1's — allowing easier brake setup, especially when using wider rims. In my case, I was able to get my brake arms perfectly parallel to each other (when the pads are engaged with the rim), whereas with the RW1's they would have formed a very slight "V". In addition, the pads themselves are curved — the RW1's are straight. Lastly, the cartridges are slightly dimpled on either end, probably resulting in a stiffer cartridge. These are a worthwhile upgrade for change number 1 alone.
The Ti's replaced an AR50/DKG booster setup that worked well but was overkill for a rear brake on a stiff aluminum frame. The SD series brakes allow for much improved tire/pad clearance when removing/replacing the wheel (because of no constricting arch), and slightly lower weight. Swapping the AR50's for the Ti's and losing the booster took me from 29 to 28 pounds on the bathroom scale; according to Avid, the Ti hardware accounts for only an 18 to 24g weight savings over standard steel fasteners.
Power-wise I was a little surprised: I expected that losing the booster and the presumably more powerful AR50's would result in a noticeable, if insignificant, loss of power (lemme tell you — the Avid disc works wonders in the front all by itself!).
But in reality, the only instance that I really feel the difference in power is when resting on a steep uphill. If I've got the bike stopped, but I'm resting my weight in the saddle and grabbing the rear brake to keep me from rolling backward, I've got to squeeze pretty damn hard to keep the rear wheel locked. With the AR50/DKG, my grip wasn't nearly so tight. But for regular downhill type stuff, I just don't notice a difference in performance.
Tuning wise, these SD brakes are great. Easy setup, no slop, and precise range of spring adjustments to get the lever feel just right. I've got the spring tension to a very light resistance, but the brake centering and return remains precise. The brakes are noiseless, with no squeal, chatter or grinding to speak of.
Overall, I've got to take away 2 value points for the Ti premium: $20 for 18g to 24g weight savings is pretty substantial. But overall, I'll stick with a 5 star rating for a brake that is simple, light weight, easy to setup and use, and performs very well.
