Strengths:Looks, Ease of set-up, stopping power and SUPER LIGHT!
Weaknesses:None so far
Similar Products Used:Shimano Deore
Bike Setup:Who really cares?
Bottom Line:I will admit it. I bought these because the reviews are great but also because they look hot.Yes, I wanted the orange-rust color. Thought they would look good on my bike and they do! I put them on and expected excellent results and they didn't dissapoint. They truely are single digit. They modulate great even with my Shimano levers. Not really thrilled with the Rim Wrangler pads though. They seem to work really well but I've read that they are hard on rims so I will change to Koolstop. But this is on item that really works and is light! These definately get the gighest ratings.

Bottom Line:These brakes are very light and easy to true and maintain. I have run them for nearly three years but every year during the cold seasons they fur up with white salts around the fitting and contact points. When cleaned down, pitting is evident, and once this erosion has started it is difficult to eradicate. Brakes have become so gnarled that I am now concerned about their strength!I have now switched to Avid Single Digit Ti's as the main body is not Magnesium and they are of comparative weight. I have also had similar problems with the Easton MG60 Mag stem!

Bottom Line:The bottom line is that these brakes are faultless, unless the fact that they are no longer made is a failing.

My main comment here is that the level of customer service offered by Avid is awesome! I thoght that I was lost after crushing one arm of the brakes against a very nasty boulder. I broke my leg in 4 places and.........in 4 different ways.compound, greenstick, communated and spiral! The brakes however suffered one stripped thread on the spring tension adjuster. Tried to get spares in the UK always met with the same comments, contacted Avid, was sent, without asking new screws and adjusters! Hats off to AVID Anyone need replacement parts use their tech guy LonnieT really these guys deserve quality adulation!

Weaknesses:Same
Similar Products Used:Shimano
Bike Setup:Y bike w/upgrades (M517 XTR, Stylo Team, Bontrager, RFace, SID Race, Cane Creek, etc)
Bottom Line:Talked to the Avid Tech guy. Outstanding customer service!!!! The info is: Mag out of production for 2 years. Spec on bushing play is 2mm at end of arm (where cable/noodle bracket atchs). Zero play like XTR or Avid Ultimate uses a different (better) bearing setup. You should be able to get the bearing play back to less than 2mm by using a slightly thicker washer available from Avid but have to push out the pressed end cap to install - not a problem using a hex wrench "drift". OK, more flames because of outstanding Avid customeer support and an easy fix to the bushings - And all the previous strengths. Don't know about downhill but a great brake 4 XC riding; using with Avid 2.0L levers and WTB dual compound inserts. Way to go Avid... ride on.

Weaknesses:Like before, bushing play
Similar Products Used:STX, XTR 951, generic (alloy)

Bottom Line:This is what the world is anxiously awaiting, brake weights, direct from the USPS lobby digital metering scales, totally unscientific random sample size of 1:

Avid Mag rear brake, new out of the box, total with pads and hardware (bolts, noodle, overcoat) is 159 grams.

XTR 951 rear brake, as new/never run, "out of the box", total with pads and hardware is 198 grams.

(My old OEM generic somethings-worked OK-are 235 g total)

Ratings still the same even though Mags aren't quite as light as I thought. $89 retail!!! YGBSM. Wonder if there's a way to tighten up those bushings on the SD Mags.... Calling Avid in the morning. By the way, like the guy below said, the instructions are really doggie poo.

Strengths:Lightweight. Looks really good w/magnesium finish, cartridge pads
Weaknesses:bushing slop
Similar Products Used:STX, Generics, XTR 951
Bike Setup:Trek Y - All overkill upgraded xcept brakes
Bottom Line:Cool brakes, cart. pads, lightest I've had a chance to try, finish is exceptional. Problem is that the bushings, brand new, ie just installed them, have as much slop/play as the old worn generics that were on the bike. Called Supergo tech and it's unknown to them; so will return to Supergo. Have a new set of rims and don't want to put a "loose" set of calipers against them. I checked out the mtbr of brakes and these rate very high??? Anyone know if maybe Avid started a new assembly line somewhere and they just haven't tightened up the tolerances? Or seconds? Or if these brakes, or all SD except Ultimates are like this and it really isn't a problem? Don't know whether to go back to XTR or try SD-7s. Anyone out there bought a set of SD-7 lately and checked out the bushings for play when installing? Incidently, I pulled the XTR brakes off my other bike and put them on this one just to make sure I wasn't missing something; and NO bushing play at all, completely free pivoting but no front to rear looseness -NADA!!!

By the way, since I had everything off both bikes on the rear calipers, I weighed the complete setups (including hardware) and the SD Mags are about 60 grams lighter. Weight difference is in the arm assemblies as the hardware (noodles, allen bolts, etc) shows about the same for each brand. Since my scale isn't calibrated for absolute grams, (difference should be good) I'll stop by a calibrated scale tomorrow and post another review if this weight difference is off by much. Where's my weight weenie tranquilizers... Don't seem to have very good luck with Supergo stuff so giving up on them. Firey flamer rating is ok for value since strengths (see above)are there and paid $30 for each brake - great posers; but only 2 fiery chunks for overall as I wouldn't run that loose a setup on a good ride.

Weaknesses:Maybe a little flexy, but not noticable or detremental to their performance.

Bottom Line:After two hard years of using these brakes, all I can say about them is awesome. I have recently retired them as I have gone to dics, but they will remain on my other bike, as they are by far the best stoppers in all conditions. They never squealed and had great modulation at the levers (XTs). They work great and if you can find them on sale, pick up a set and enjoy!

Strengths:Light. Really light. Easy to install and setup (if you know your brake systems).
Weaknesses:The installment directions and advisories were photocopied and basically illegible; even the diagrams and pics. The photocopies weren't even aligned on the page so I got about 2/3 of the directions.
Similar Products Used:Shimano, Avid (disk), Hayes, Hope
Bike Setup:Does it matter..?
Bottom Line:I was able to score both brakes and AD-7 levers for less than $100, including 2nd day shipping.
Installation took about 30 min. total time, including test ride.I just used common sense when setting them up on the bike, since the directions weren't even fit to be a coaster for my drink.
These brakes are strong. They stop very well and the levers have a massive amount of adjustment built into them. Do they stop like disks? No way, but this is the closest you will come to the disk power for $100 (for both wheels).
Excelent modulation and 'feel' come from these brakes.

I gave them 4 chili's because of the directions (or lack of). I am glad that I know about parallel-push brakes. If I didn't, I would have to have a shop install them. Even if I had to go to a shop for installation, it would still be a good deal .. not a great deal ... a good one none the less ..
If you have stock parallel-push brakes, this is a great upgrade.
If you have cantilevers, maybe you should buy a new bike by now .. BWAHAHAHA

Weaknesses:None yet
Similar Products Used:Avid SD-5
Bike Setup:2001 Sugar 2, XT levers
Bottom Line:Wow, these are better than I expected. I got them cheap on eBay - $48+shipping, brand new. Seller was "elguapogrande" and has been selling new Avid Mag brakes & levers every week for the last month or two. I have 3 rides on them so far.

I just expected the 100g weight savings vs my Avid SD 5's and similar performance. But they stop SOO much better than the SD 5's. I even had new Koolstop Thinline pads recently on my SD5's, but these brakes with the Rim Wrangler cartridge pads are worlds better.

Stops fantastically, excellent modulation - each little bit of pressure on the levers produces noticably more stopping power, no fade. I just came down Mt Tam's Eldridge grade / Indian Fire Trail / Blithedale Ridge - 5 miles of continuous descent, and the brakes didn't fade at all - still had full easy power all the way to the bottom.

Though they've been discontinued by Avid due to plant safety problems manufacturing Magnesium, find them & get them while you can (eBay and Pricepoint have them).

Strengths:Decent modulation and feel, but newer XTRs are better in both categories, and even though Avids are fairly easy to set-up, XTR has even simpler alignment set-up.
Weaknesses:Overpriced and overweight. Other than the infamous "light-weight," there's seems to be no reason that the brakes should have been priced as they were. To top it off, Avid has now switched their pad design to Shimano-compatible, and its not easy, at least in my experience, to find the first generation pads anymore.

Bottom Line:These brakes are awesome.

I have them paired with the mag levers and I must say that the two set up together really work well and look smokin'. I had them set up in no time and even with my bike still clamped in the stand I could already tell the difference. The design is top notch and so simple its almost stupid. I mean that in a nice way of course. Lets face it they don't look that complicated but they work damn well.

I have a pair of LX brakes which felt like mush and there is no comparison. The Mags clamp like a vice. I orginally had the Arch Rivals (Good brakes too!) on my bike and was thinking discs for my XC ride but then went into weight weenie mode. Beside the copper colour on my black and gold Rocky really sets it off. Nice.

I am sold on the Avid line and I hope they keep up the good quality work.

Four smokin' Shimano's cause I paid through the nose. The price I paid was in Canadian funds. Each pair. You do the math. Five because these brakes rule

The power is unbeatable.

I'm using these brakes in combination with Kooka's V levers
and the feel is awesome. Besides being the lightest setup they work great and I have not had a problem with them since purchasing them.

I work at a shop so I get a discount but I would probably still buy them and if not the mags definitly the SD25's.
I ordered the grey but they sent me the coppoer color instead but it turned out looking a hell of alot better.

I would recomend the SD25's for the average rider but if you have the $$$ buy the mags, you won't be disappointed.

For the price they blow XTR out of the water

now, that could be my stellar setup of course :)

I was really surprised how well these work
strong braking and excellent modulation

now, to be honest, the levers have a LOT to do with that
the Avid levers (even the cheaper ones) flat out blow away Shimano levers, no comparison

Bottom Line:This just happens to be one of those products that makes you really appreciate buying new expensive components for your bike.

Everything about this brake is worth the $90 a pair I spent at Jenson. The color is really more of an orange metallic than copper which matched up perfectly with the orange GT used on the LTS. Machine work and craftsmanship are top notch which helps to ease the pain of spending this much on a non-linkage oriented brake arm. Braking force could be compared to that of a vice...absolutely astounding for something that weighs so little. Even set up was a breeze, 20 minutes tops and not even a hint of any squeeking. (A reacurring problem I've had with all the new equal push Shimano brakes)

As for the weight issues.....GET OVER IT !! The numbers aren't that far off and the Mag is more rigid than the standard single digit brakes.

Bar none the best brakes I've ever owned....if only Shimano would take note.

You shouldn't need a whole lot of braking if you like to fly, but you shouldn't have to squeeze the heck out of your levers when you do need to trim the speed down. Bottom Line:I replaced a set of XT's with these. My XT's had the rattles & I rebuilt them with the spacer kit and they were OK. Some birthday cash allowed me to purchase these as a replacement, even though my XT's were fine.

I was pleased to find a definite improvement in performance!
There was better modulation & braking strength. Also, installation was a snap. I just bolted them on, adjusted the pad contact with the rim and off I went. I didn't even have to touch the tension adjustors, they were immediately centered. And there are no linkages to wear out & rattle!

If I wasn't spending gift money, I probably would have bought a set of Single Digit 25's instead. They are the same brake, just not magnesium & slightly heavier. Decide how much you want to spend & buy the one that fits your budget. But, buy a set of Avids for the performance they give. They are awesome!

Similar Products Used:Shimano xt and xtr
Bike Setup:Merin Fat Beat, Shimano xt and xtr drive train, Mavic, Race Face
Bottom Line:I don't know about the weight of these brakes as compared to advertised weight or other similar products. That is a concern if Avid is misleading the consumer.

That issue aside, I do know that these brakes perform better than any other brake I've used to include xtr (which I've had on my other bike for more than a year). I love the adjustability and the color is great! These brakes have a smooth pull and are simple and sweet.

As for price, they were more in cost than other brakes of similar quality and construction, but worth every penny. If price is an issue for people, then don't purchase them. You would think that would be a simple concept for people wouldn't you? But time and again, I see product reviews by people complaining about the price of a product they purchased. Hello, don't buy it and then turn around and complain about the price!

Back to the weight issue. If these brakes are heavier, so what? I didn't notice anyone saying they were racers so why all the complaining about weight. The real issue is whether Avid has been intentionally misleading the consumer. If they are, then they at least owe us all apologies. So Avid, What's the answer? What is the true weight of the Mag brakes?

My bottom line is I'm pleased with the Avid Mags. I'd recommend these to anyone who loves riding off-road and I giv'em 5 flamin turds for value, but I'm withholding a turd overall until Avid tells us all the truth!

Strengths:Powerful Brakes, Easy Setup, one finger braking
Weaknesses:None that I discovered, People have been complaining about the weight, but it's still very light. We're only talking about 20 grams. That's less than an ounce for the whole brake system. I don't call that too much weight, but still more than they advertised it for.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XT and XTR systems
Bike Setup:Specialized FSR Pro F/S, 2000 model
Bottom Line:These brakes came with my FSR Pro. When I took the bike out for it's first outting, the brakes were so powerful that I could not get used to them. After several more rides and breaking them in, they are still too powerful so I had to toe in the brake pads a bit more so that the brakes were easier to modulate. I feel these brakes are one of the best and most powerful on the market barring disk brakes. But with brakes like these, who needs disk brakes. I like the red adjusters for the lever sensitivity, but they look breakable if you should fall or hit something with it.

Other than that, these are the best stoppers I've ever owned and I've had both XT and XTR. True one finger braking.

Since I got these with my bike, I can't comment on its value rating. I'll give it 3 chilis for Value based on previous entries and 5 for Performance until the little red knobs break off.

Similar Products Used:Shimano LX's, XT's
Bike Setup:2000 Specialized M2 Pro
Bottom Line:I got these on my new Specialized bike and the first pull on the rear break stripped the hole on the spring tension screw and poped it out. I haven't heard of this happening before, so I'll give Avid the benifit of the doubt and only knock 1/2 a chili, but seeing as how I was very excited to ride my new bike I took some Shimano LX's off an old bike and temporarily installed those. Upon removal I found that the LX's were lighter than the mags! That was a little disapointing, but I don't think that weight is everything, I'll just take a piss before I go riding to make up for the weight :)

Even though these breakes were over weight and the screw hole stripped, they still have awsome breaking power(at least the front one), better than the LX on the rear. I love the pads and the way they look too.

For value I'll give them a 2 because the XT's should perform just as good and weigh less too, but for overall I'll give them a 3 since they perform well.

Bottom line: Unless they come with the bike buy XT's, they're lighter and perform at least as well as the mags.

Bottom Line:got a chance to test ride a specialized (that had these brakes) at an LBS that a friend owns. these brakes are stiff, simplistic, attractive and have great pads. with that said, they're a rip off in price.

according to an email response from avid, last minute design changes boosted the weight on these suckers. my very accurate digital scale shows total weight (arms, pads, noodle, hardware) of 165g! that's no where near 139g and only 5 grams less than regular single digits and only 14 less than my tektro's. my tektro's, once equipped with avid's rim wrangler pads, work just as well as either single digit. avid needs to update their 'tech specs' at their web site...it isn't hard and would ensure no one is deceived. needless to say, i'm returning these brakes for a refund.

my worthless two cents...spend $20-$30 less (depending on where you shop) and buy the regular single digits unless you absolutely must have magnesium. avid shows 170g for their regular single digits--5 grams difference. by the way, their rim wrangler pads are so tough/smooth/durable, it's scary...
