Submitted by Turd Furgeson a Cross Country Rider from Merryland
Date Reviewed: August 25, 2004
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Came stock on bike.
Strengths:Simple design that does the job very well and lasts just as long as most higher end products.
Weaknesses:None yet other than a bit of rusting on the bolts and other non-stainless metal bits.
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:'00 Trek VRX300: Azonic Love Seat, Azonic O.R.S. stem, Sette APX post, ODI's, stock otherwise...for now...
Bottom Line:I totally agree with most of the other posters here in that the Avid 1.9's are a great lever. They're starting to look a bit dated (to me), but performance wise they've kicked butt since day 1. They've required very little maintenence and aren't obtrusive despite my big hands (I'm a clydesdale). After 4yrs. of continuous use they're getting a bit loose, but not enough to make a big deal out of and I may only upgrade to something new just for looks. Overall a great set of brake levers!

Date Reviewed: January 23, 2003
Favorite Trail:Ocala
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $25.00
Purchased At:online somewhere
Strengths:Covers all bases
Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:Avid 1.0
Bike Setup:Trek Hardtail with Full Shimano XT 9spd system, Race Face Cranks, Mavic D521 rear/Sun O degree front rim, Ringle headset, LX V-brakes, Avid 1.9 levers, Kore stem, Titec riser bars, RockShox suspension seatpost, RockShox Judy Race fork, Primo pedals, ODI grips.
Bottom Line:The avid 1.9L levers are the same as the 2.0L. It is just the model that comes stock on many bikes. If you can pick these up at a savings then do it. They have given years of worry free service. No breaks when I wreck and slam them into a tree or jump face (keep them loose on the handle bar so they move when they hit). The modulation adjustment is what I like the most. NO worries when you ride is the other great benefit of this quality product.

Favorite Trail:a thin layer of lemon curd
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:came with bike
Strengths:lever feel
speed dial thing is the mutts genitalia
unstoppable when paired up with any avid brake, especially the arch rival
Weaknesses:scratches a little easily, but thats nowt bad
Similar Products Used:stx,lx, tektro rubbish
Bike Setup:2k kona stuff, 2k judy races, hope enduro 4 disc brake up front, avid arch rival rear with speed dial 1.9, truvativ firex crankset, currently using standard sun ditchwitch rims on sum dodgy unbranded hubs (shimano i think), tioga 2.3 tyres
Bottom Line:though they stopped making these llevers, they live on as the SD5 ( or is it 7?), but they still kick ass big time compared to current shimano levers.

Favorite Trail:kokopelli loops in fruita
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Touring cyclist; came on bike
Strengths:reliable! strong, and reliable. comfortable too.
Weaknesses:after prolonged use, such as in trials, they seem to flex some.
Similar Products Used:avid speed dial 2.0s
Bike Setup:99 trek 7000 with lots of stuff
Bottom Line:i've used these levers since i bought my bike in feb, 99, and they have performed extremely well the entire time! they are very simple, and very strong. i flipped my bars once, and my bike came down on the rear brake lever. the lever bent quite a bit, but i was able to bend it back, and i have had no problems since. they are curved in a way that i don't have to use much energy to stop. i love 'em. defintitely well matched up with my avid 2.0 brakes. definitely a kick ass bang for the buck.

Date Reviewed: July 11, 2001
Favorite Trail:Terrace Mountain
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:McBike
Strengths:The lever has a feel to it that is unmatched by shimano. The speed dial adjustment is also very nice.
Weaknesses:The pivot in my right lever is a bit loose from crashing too much, but it still works great!
Similar Products Used:Old Shimano, Shimano Deore
Bike Setup:LX complete Kona AA with XT rear derailleur. Race Face stem and Bash Guard. Marzocchi Z1 D.O. forks. AVID brakes!
Bottom Line:These levers are for anyone who uses a cable brake. The only excuse for not buying these is if you have hydralic brakes. My old Deore levers had a curved back that dug into my knuckles when rock hopping. Avid levers give amazing stopping power that makes it so you can enjoy your ride more. If you want better brakes, start with avid levers.

Strengths:Good price, awesome feel...great adjustablility helps when installing mech discs.
Weaknesses:NADA
Similar Products Used:Tektro levers, xt levers
Bike Setup:Jamis eureka le
Bottom Line:Blows the pants off of any other comparable lever out there. Hell ...it beats the pants off of all the overprice shimano crap ive used...coupled w/ avids mech discs its a sweet set-up...if you can find em cheap...like i did for 19 at jenson then go for it...i didnt used to think brake levers were a worthy upgrade, but the feel and adjustability you get w these puppies is amazing....ahh but if only we had more than 5 flamin chilis

Weaknesses:None really
Similar Products Used:Marin V-brakes, Shimano LX.
Bike Setup:Marin Alpine Trail, Hope disc at front, Avid lever with Marin V-brake at back (Arch Rival on its way now)
Bottom Line:Using Hope disc at front with Marin V-brakes at back is not really a balanced level of quality between front and rear braking systems. Anyway, I was planning to save for Hope at back too, but saw Avid levers for £5 (usually £25) so I figured, hell I'll buy one for a fiver just to see what its like. And it was a pleasent suprise. I've alsways felt that whilst superior to casntis due to their stopping power, V-brakes have a diabolical lack of feel. However, simply changing my lever to the avid has really made a noticeable difference; I can brake confidently at both front and rear without skidding - something I couldn't do with the marin brake lever. And as I only used the back, I can sell the front on for as much as I paid for the pair - infintely many chillis for value then!

Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:LX levers
Bike Setup:K2 Proflex 3000 with Avid 2.0 brakes and 1.9 levers. LX/XT drivetrain.
Bottom Line:I think that these are a million times better than the LX's that I had. They are so much easier to adjust. They feel much more solid and well constructed. This has definitely been the best value/performance upgrade I have made to my bike. Shimano brakes & levers just can't compare.

Bottom Line:The Speed Dial is the best. No other company can touch it. With Shimano you just set it and deal with it. With Avid you can adjust the brakes to fit the trail. Paired with Avid's Arch Rivals they make for a powerful, refined brake set up. Great Value.
