$140.00 | | Purchased At: | Nashbar | | Strengths: | Easy in, Easy out, light, durable, shed mud | | Weaknesses: | a little heavier than eggbeaters, but sooooo much better | | Similar Products Used: | Wellgo SPD's, Crank Bros Eggbeater (cromo) | | Bike Setup: | 2008 Yeti 575 carbon - xt/xtr build | | Bottom Line: | I got tired of crashing and injuring my left elbow becasue I couldn't unclip my left foot from my eggbeaters. Took a flier on the xtr's when the were on sale at Nashbar, and the CDN$ was trading above the US$ (those were the days...). I highly recommend these pedals. I put them on at the beginning of this 2008 season, adjusted the retention to my liking, and have not given them another thought. This is the way all non-consumable bike parts should work! I rode the Bow80 in (Sept 08)and slogged through about 20-30km of deep ugly quagmire. Unbelievably, the xtr's still functioned perfectly with what seemed like 5 pounds of mud on each shoe. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$100.00 | | Purchased At: | Amazon | | Strengths: | Easy to clip in and out. Looks really awesome on the bike. Improves pedaling efficency bigtime! | | Weaknesses: | None so far. | | Similar Products Used: | This is my first clipless experience. | | Bike Setup: | 2008 Rockhopper with 2.5 Kenda Nevegals | | Bottom Line: | I have wasted so much time with toe clips. I wish I would have gone clippless a long time ago. I had about ten minutes of practice and I was off to the trails. Really easy to learn how to use. Toe clips were more complicated than this by far! For efficency and safety reasons I would recommend these pedals to anyone who is serious about mountain biking. I gave this 5 chillis because if you look around you can find it for a much better price than MSRP. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$180.00 | | Purchased At: | ABCCycle | | Strengths: | Stiffness, mud shedding and easy clipping (in or out) | | Weaknesses: | Its price... | | Similar Products Used: | Shimano basic SPD (PD-520) pedals that came basic with the Stumpy. | | Bike Setup: | Specialized Stumpjumper Disc & Rocky Mountain ETSX-70. | | Bottom Line: | Very impressive pedals that are fantastic when it comes to clipping in or out. I often fell down with the other SPD pedals since they were tougher to clip in or out and they had a tendency to unclip themselves when I jumped (pushing the bike up with my legs) even if they were properly adjusted. I no longer have the problem with the XTR's. I am still unsure if I will go for XT pedals on my new ETSX-70 or buy a new pair of XTR, but I will probably try the lower-priced XT pedals. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Adjustability. | | Weaknesses: | None | | Similar Products Used: | PDM505, Crank Bros Candy SL | | Bike Setup: | 29er Hardtail | | Bottom Line: | I put these pedals on my GF Paragon as an upgrade to the existing M505 to save some weight and for better mud shedding capability. I thought about some Eggbeaters but prefered the solidness and more positive clip in of the XTR. These pedals have been the only component on the bike that have required absolutely no attention after over 5000km of dirt riding. When you get something that good on your bike it has to get 5 hot chillis all round. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

In and out of em quick! | | Weaknesses: | weight for all the weenies | | Similar Products Used: | Ritchey Time ATAC Carbon Speedplay frogs | | Bike Setup: | Blur LT Fox Trail Tune Fox rp23 SRAM XO kit | | Bottom Line: | I have used Speedplay frogs for years and finally got tired of 80 bucks a year to rebuild em twice. I put my new shimano pedals on for my first ride and was extremely satisfied. I am more stable in my pedal, easy clip in and out, and the spring tension is adjustable. If your'e tired of rebuilding frogs give these pedals a go! So far they are a lot more stable than any other pedal I've used. My foot doesn't hop around while getting out of the saddle etc. Not one unplanned release. I like the balanced float; not too much or too little. Stability, bombproof, and a three year warranty with out all the hassles of greasing things, rebuilding things, and more time grinning from riding. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$144.00 | | Purchased At: | performance | | Strengths: | engineering, ease of clipping in, lighter than previous models, | | Weaknesses: | heavier than crank bros. (but way much better in the engineering dept.) | | Similar Products Used: | crank bros. | | Bike Setup: | specialized stumpjumper comp w/ xtr shifters and rear deraillers | | Bottom Line: | I bought a pair of crank bros. cromo pedals thinking, "hey this would be a great change from spUdS." the look of crank bros. really enticed me. lean looking like a ferrari. but when i used it. i had the most trouble clipping in. i thought,"hey, i must conform to the way this clips in." conform i did for several weeks. the way i noticed to clip in was to move laterally forward until you feel you hit the front bar, then push down your heel. ok sounds good. but i haven't ridden a bike (and single track in 13 years.)[was overseas.] so as usual, i'm Goofy in the trails. clipping in was a real B?t?h! especially if you are tired (hint: out of shape.) So i went to per___m___e bike shop, and saw xtr pedals on sale! got me them bad boys. i hooked it up and tested it, it was BLISS!!! GO GET A PAIR OF XTR PEDALS, you won't regret it! it clipped in effortlessly. i didn't have to stop and think, ok find the front bar (go forward), and press down. HERE, i just go CLIP IN! wow, life is so much easier now! i want to present a neutral point of view, but wow, life is so much better with shimano XTRs. Dunno how the crank bros. aficianados say how it is so easy to clip in, I SAY, "BUNCH OF BULL!" take in from me, i like the best equipment for my bike, but crank bros. don't cut it for me. SHIMANO IS STILL KING. they were the ones who first came out with clipless mtb (correct me if i am wrong), and with all those years of experience, they know what they are doing. So it's a NO BRAINER, shimano XTR pedals all the way for me bro! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

They are a lot lighter than the M520s. But they are not considered very light-weight pedals. If you ride in rough terrain and need a pedal that will take a licking and keep on ticking, then this is the one!! There were other pedals I was considering that were lighter weight, but I wanted a pedal that would take a beating. Plus I am partial to XTR!! :) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Doing research on what to try after this.
Having said that, these aren't crap. They have sustained a knock or two against a couple of rocks and they still last. Just the clipping issue.

The ends which also have XTR written on them scratches off really easily when you lean the bike on it's side. | | Similar Products Used: | Other SPD pedals. | | Bike Setup: | 2007 Trek 9.8 | | Bottom Line: | A great pedal, which you can boast about. I them it on my Cross bike and Mountain bike, so they must be good :) Easily adjustable and the best SPD pedal i've ever used. XT all around with Juicy 5 Disks F/R. | | Bottom Line: | As always, Shimano has the most solid pedals out there. I've tried to go with the cheaper brands and they just don't measure up. You may add a few grams, but this is Mountain biking afterall... What's important to me is getting in and out on the fly and this pedal does that. And it's their first XTR pedal. I am quite satisfied with XTR.
