Spring 2003 IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation Grants Awarded
For Immediate Release, May 15, 2003

Six IMBA mountain bike clubs will receive cash awards in the first round of 2003 IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation Grants. The $500 grants fund projects that promote environmental education and inspire conservation in the mountain biking community.

The Spring 2003 IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation Grant winners are:

* Essex County Velo, South Hamilton, Massachusetts - Essex County Velo will use grant monies to help construct a 65-foot boardwalk over wet areas on Mom’s Silver Bullet Trail in Beverly, Massachusetts. The bridges will stop trail widening and protect endangered plants.

* Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club, Seattle, Washington - The IMBA/CLIF Bar grant will be used to construct and install educational signs at Tiger Mountain State Forest on National Trails Day, June 7. The signs will offer tips on responsible riding, safety and trail etiquette in an effort to minimize trail damage and reduce user conflict.

* Chicago Area Mountain Bikers (CAMBr), Oak Forest, Illinois - Grant funds will be used to remove overgrown, non-native invasive plants from an environmentally sensitive trail in the Palos Forest Preserve near Chicago, an IMBA Hot Spot city. CAMBr and conservation experts will trim the dense forest canopy to increase sunlight penetration. One result: a drier trail that will keep users from riding and walking around muddy sections and damaging plant life.

* Rum River Cycling Team, Princeton, Minnesota - This IMBA Sprockids club will use CLIF Bar grant money to enhance the team’s trailbuilding and preservation program that requires each member to complete 20 hours of volunteer trailwork a year. The team's volunteer efforts will focus on Hillside Park, Milaca Mountain Bike Park and St. Croix State Park.

* New York City Mountain Bikers, New York, New York - Funds will be used to develop a multi-use trail system at Wolfe's Pond and Long Pond Parks on Staten Island. This area may be used as the mountain bike venue if New York City is selected to host the 2012 Olympics. New York was designated an IMBA Hot Spot in 2002.

* Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBOSC), Santa Cruz, California - MBOSC will use funds to produce and distribute trail use educational pamphlets at Santa Cruz parks and bike shops. The "Go Slow, Say Hello" pamphlet is designed to improve on-the-trail relations in this densely populated area.

A total of 28 grants totaling $14,000 have been distributed since the IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation grant program was established in 2001.

Six more grants will be awarded in 2003. The application deadline for the next round is September 1, 2003. All IMBA-affiliated clubs are invited to apply. For more information please visit:
