So I'm riding down one of the trails at the camp I live on. It's a short trail, just a connector between the lodge and the picnic area. But it is a fun trail, as there are numerous 6-12 inch logs to hop over along the way. So I'm racing down it, probably going too fast for my skill level, and I start porpoising...having less and less time to prepare for each hop. I make most of them, anyway, but the next to last one disrupts me totally--I pretty much make the hop over the log itself ok, but upon landing, I lose control. Next thing I know I see a tombstone rock coming straight at my face at an incredible rate. I managed to tuck my head just a little, but enough so that I hit my helmet on the rock rather than the bridge of my nose! Other than a small dent in my helmet, everything was fine. I was surprised I that I didn't even have a headache! Thankfully, my bike was ok, too. I took the helmet to my LBS and asked if I should buy a new one. After looking at it, the guy said, "Probably, but since there are no cracks, I would probably continue to wear it myself because I'm cheap." So I decided to keep it as a backup in case I total the new one I bought, to use in between getting a new one at that time. Anyway, that's my story.
