Cross Country Rider Summary: First reviewer's dead wrong on the Alpine Shop. Dave and the rest of the mechanics at the Alpine Shop are great, and since everyone there (in the bike shop part) actually mountain bike, they'll definitely be able to point you in the right direction. Not to knock the Bike Center, but besides Graham, they're more road-oriented.
Anyways, the Trail Around Middlebury is mostly beginner-oriented, non-technical double track with a few sections of singletrack. The good stuff lies in the offshoot trails in Battell Woods - tight, technical singletrack with lots of rock slabs and rock step-up/drop-off features. Also, good singletrack downhills on Chipman Hill, if you can find them, and Wright Park offers some good riding, but it's a total mess when wet. Recommended Route: Ride up the service road on Chipman Hill, take any of the trails down. Repeat. Then go to Battell Woods and get lost on the singletrack branching off from the TAM.
Do not ride in Mean's (sic) woods - closed to bikers. And stay out of Wright Park until very late April or May at the earliest. Other recommended trails in the same area: Snake Mountain

, from Middlebury Summary: The trails are great right here in town. All sorts of single track in 5-6 sections of forest. the total length of the single track is probably in the 10 mile zone with plenty of double track etc... Kep your eyes open for turn offs and extensions as the more technical stuff is stashed away a bit. Rides happen regularly...Look for bikers around town after work. There are trails for any skill level here too. Recommended Route: TAM-all over town Other recommended trails in the same area: There's riding.

, from Middlebury, VT Summary: I wrote the previous directions a while ago. The Alipne Shop has improved a LOT, the guys there ride more hard core stuff than The Bike Center now. 4"-6" of travel is the norm now, and the trails are getting SICK. Anyone who visits is amazed how technical they are.

, from Danbury, Ct Summary: A nice trail for beginners and intermediates. This trail does a loop around Middlebury. A mix of Single and double track. Can be shortened by heading back to town on any of the many roads that you cross. The trail can be very muddy in some areas. Recommended Route: TAM (Trail Around Middlebury)
