Santee Sycamore Loop
9 reviews
 4.22 of 5

Single track north next to Santee Lakes into Sycamore Canyon. Enter Goodan Ranch Preserve. Single track next to fence until you hit the road. Follow the road to the north entrance, then drop onto the Martha's single track CARDIAC. Follow it down to the single track you came in on. Back to Santee.

Summary:
Got stopped by the Marines riding north from Mast. They were sitting on quads under the trees by the powerlines. The told me everything north of the lines and south of the ranch is theirs and nobody was allowed access.

Recommended Route:
Trail is closed.

Summary:
Fun ride with tons of singletrack options without tons of climbing, at least on the routs I've ridden. From Mast Ave in Santee you ride along a fireroad but there is singletrack weaving through the brush and the creek bed allmost the entire distance and not too heavy on the traffic within the park.

Recommended Route:
From the corner of Mast and Medina enter the first opening in the berrier. From that point there are many shortoptional trails along the fire road but I like to stay along the fences next to the houses and the upper lakes until the gat to the ranch. After crossing into the ranch I follow the fire road to the staging area hub where the maps are which is past the ranch house (now the rangers house. From that point follow the fireroad in the same general direction you were going up the first little climb to the staging area by the house you can see from the maps. From the upper staging area enter the singletrack on the right as you climb into the area and have fun, this was the best part of the ride through the trees and ito the canyon. After a mile and a half you come to a fireroad that intersects with the staging area with the maps; turn left away from the maps and do the hardest climb to a "T" intersection where you turn right and go through this staging area to a fun rolling trail that ends along the series of trails you came in on. Turn left and return to you're truck.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Cowles is short but fun. Mission sucks except for the area directly around the clairmont Mesa entrance.

Summary:
Sycamore Canyon (aka Sicky) is a great ride that is close very to San Diego. It can be almost all singletrack depending on how you do it. There are several ways to access it. (HWY 67, Poway Rd., and Mast BLVD. in Santee) I usually do this on my single speed as the climbs are not that bad, usually rolling.

Recommended Route:
I always start in Santee near West Hills High School on Mast Blvd. Cross Mast and start riding the singletrack. There will be several turn offs, as a general rule, stay to the right and you will miss the big sand pits. After a few miles, cross the gate into Gooden Ranch and continue out and climb the big hill towards the staging area. This is a good place to take a break and smoke one. From there take the Martha's Grove trail. This is where it really gets sweet. There are a couple of meat grinding desents, hold on. Keep on this trail until you come to the windmill, then hang a left and back to your vehicle. This takes a couple of hours. Get nashty.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mission Trails, Oak and Spring Canyons, if you want to drive a little go to Nobel.

Summary:
all around good cross country ride.11 to 15 miles dependant on your start point. Most start from The high school at Mast blvd. provides a good cardio for the traditionalist and a bit of technical for the dirt warrior. The downhill section just east of the upper gravel staging lot is an attetnion getter for most. It breaks into the grove for a nice switching single track which opens to a grass plain for a quarter mile. The other side of the field closes onto another short singletrack then down by the farm house and south to the eques. trail. jump the fence and pick you side shoot trail back to the dam, or turn right at the eques. fence and return to the staging area again via the hill base trail.

Recommended Route:
52 east to Mast blvd exit. turn left onto Mast go up hill quarer mile to high school on right. Park in lot scoot across the street hit the trail and head north towards the dam. continue north on the side of the dam in to the sycamore trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
MIssion gorge(Mt. Fortuna).

Summary:
I miss this trail. I walked it one evening after the fire and it is terrible. It is CLOSED currently. If you insist on riding this trail please stay on the trail. We don't want to have bikes banned. The HUGE oak trees about 2.5 miles in have burned to the ground. The whole area looks like a moon-scape. The ranger station is completely gone and the family now has to live in a trailer. Whe it was open it was the best trail within 30 min of downtown. A great cardio workout and a couple of decent climbs. The decent down to Martha's grove was fun and has changed drastically over the years. It was rideable but a little bit tricky. Great fast switchback type of singletrack coming out of the grove back towards the windmill (which is still standing). It isa great 12.5 mile loop from th end of Medina. Be cool and stay off of the trail until it is open. Feel free to volunteer to help stem erosion from the rainy season.

Recommended Route:
Start from the end of Medina and ride north east. Ride alongside the Santee Lakes and follow the trail to equestrian fence. Up the 3 hills to the staging area. Keep puffing up the trail to the right of the staging area and then decend into Martha's grove. Watch out for the technical area on the last part of the downhill it is a little tricky but not that bad. Hammer through the switchbacks and through the valey meadow which will take you past the windmill and back to the equestrian fence. Follow you original path back to your vehicle.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Florida Canyon, Shepards Canyon, Penasquitos Canyon,
