Date Reviewed: March 30, 2009
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Johnny Sprockets
Strengths:Bad-ass looks, don't pick up twigs and crud
Weaknesses:So exotic and expensive-looking that they make the bike especially vulnerable to theft
Bottom Line:Hi everyone, I am sorry for "spamming" the forum, but I have a set of these rare Spin wheels that has hardly been used, and since I never ride it and am out of work now, I finally decided to sell them on eBay. As far as I can tell, the wheels and tires are in excellent shape with nothing but a few cosmetic scuffs from storage, though I can't guarantee the tires due to age. I'm starting the auction tonight (3/30/09) beginning at $1 and running for ten days with no reserve. If you despaired of ever finding another pair of these, please do a keyword search for "Spin wheels", or contact me via email for a direct auction link. Thanks!

Date Reviewed: June 8, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Very smooth, Nearly Unbreakable,....SMOOTH
Weaknesses:Company went out of business, Not compatible with DISC brakes
Bottom Line:The whells are great even though they're a bit heavier than other high end wheels. As far as how tough they are, I acidentally left one leaning against my rear bunper and drove off while towing a trailer with 2 dirt bikes on it. I realized I'd forgotten my front wheel and went back to get it. There was a tire track across the rim from driving over it with the trailer but the wheel is still perfect. I wouldn't have believed it if i hadn't seen this for myself.

I'm searching for a way to modify these for DISCs but I don't know if it can be done.

Favorite Trail:What?
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:with bike
Strengths:It looks neat and runs true. I weigh about 235 lbs and probably have another 40 lbs of luggage. I have had no problems, other than below. The wheel has been in use on roads for about ten years.
Weaknesses:That is why I'm writing. About a year ago, It started to squeak. Tried replacing the pop rivets. Helped for a while. Decided it was due to thermal expansion between rim and wheel. Demounted rim by gently heating it with a propane torch. Now I am sure it was thermal expansion, because of the way the adhesive came loose.
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:This is on the back of a Ryan recumbent. I use it for daily commuting, and want to continue. Yes, there is a smaller one one the front, just like the Ryan ads used to show.
Bottom Line:I would like to glue the wheel and rim back together, but I want to do it right. What won't harm the wheel, will bond to both the rim and wheel, and won't get brittle with age? I really like the wheel, and want to keep using it.

Strengths:Very tough! Can't ride without them. Great looks.
Weaknesses:Out of business.
Similar Products Used:spinergy
Bike Setup:GT Team LTS, Zaskar LE...XTR, KORE, Race Face, Chris King Head Set
Bottom Line:Spins are tough. You have to know how to ride them to enjoy them. I'm a master wheel builder and raced with a 4 cross laced wheel and have taco'd plenty of spoked wheels. For those of you who don't know what a 4 cross or 3 cross lace is, it's basically the extended circumference of either hub created at the cross of the spokes. The larger the diameter the stronger and 4 cross is the largest you can build without getting into crazy spoke patterns. I've never had any problems with my Spins and as for maintenance, there is no such thing as maintenance free parts for any bicycle that I know of. You should always clean, inspect and check your bolts after every ride. I'm seeing so many letters here bashing Spin but it's the ones who don't know how to ride them that have problems. Preventative maintanance is key to keep your parts working the way it should. I've had my Spins for about 10 years now and not 1 problem. It's still very true, round as can be and the ceramic is still intact on the rim surface. I'm 220 lbs and ride downhill most of the time with my spins. I ride hard and know what quality means when it comes to racing and selling. I'm also a pro mechanic and have made repairs for many pro riders in the NORBA racing circuit. Everyone has there preference.

Favorite Trail:forest stuff and roots and rocks and stuff
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:Came with dead guys bike
Strengths:Look sweet! Hubs are super smooth. I never worried about breaking them. Stiff as ED medication. Roll magnificently!
Weaknesses:I BROKE ONE!!!!!!!!!! Rims are too wide for a small profile racing tire. Hard to mount any wheel magnet to. Heavy.
Bike Setup:Elite aero frame, QR Illuminero fork. Dura-Ace. Syntance. Thompson.
Bottom Line:They aren't completely unbreakble. I broke one! I broke the aluminum rim when I hit a pothole right after flatting. It dented a spot in the rim inward and cracked the metal. I figure since I was only riding on 20c tires they were vulnerable to getting f-cked up when flat, even though I'm only 145lbs.. I was sooooooooo pissed off when it happenned.

My advice: DO NOT RIDE LESS THAN 23c TIRES ON THESE WHEELS. THE RIMS ARE TOO WIDE AND IF YOU FLAT YOU MAY RUIN YOUR WHEEL!

Bottom Line:I personally love these wheels. One is slightly out of round, a bit of wobble, but that was after screaming downhill at just over 40mph. I accidently jumping a creek to which once on the other side, my rear suspension compressed very quickly. End result, I snapped my rear swingarm on one of it's lower tubes, roughly .625" in diameter. That was only after I had the wheels 6 months!! That's pretty tough if you ask me!! I've now had them for going on 7yrs and they're doing great!

Purchased At:R & R sport
Strengths:-used it for 5 years by now, never had problems with it.
-looks good, a composite wheel all always attracts the crowd no matter where you go.
Weaknesses:-Spin out of service, afraid of riding it too hard.
-if gustly wind caught on the wheel... watchout
-cant true them
Similar Products Used:early Campagnolo, Mavics.
Bike Setup:Giant MCM Team, XTR, SID '99 SL.
Bottom Line:These wheels are rare in New Zealand, not a lot of them were sold in NZ. I used to ride them hard, but after Spin went out of business, I tend to use it as a day-to-day wheel, not a performance wheel anymore, if you want performance, and willing to pay 800 USD, go for Mavics SL series.
can be quite flexy at times, as you turn with a significant speed, you can feel it, maybe its with my SID SL as well.

I slipped a peddle once and hit the ground with enough force to snap a 3mm thick crank axle but the wheels seemed to laugh at this punishment. I also hit a curb after hopping another curb and not realising it was there. I was going about 50 km/h and the bike stopped very quickly. The tyre exploded and the metal rim bent (which was easilly fixed) but the wheel itself is perfectly fine!!!

Strengths:Style and straight out of the box, they stay straight! Stopping at traffic lights and people making offers on the wheels.

Bottom Line:Don't waste your money. The rear hub wasn't even centered in the wheel causing a slight vibration straight out of the box. They're strong, but once you give them a good hit they break and are useless after. They're really heavy and slow and the wind will catch them and blow you side to side. Favorite Trail:Devil's Gulch
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:The wheels are very stiff, aerodynamic, no truing involved, low maintenance.
Weaknesses:Since there is no truing involved, this rim will not merely tweak when it fails, but it will crack and be rendered useless.
Similar Products Used:Sun, Mavic, LX Hubs.
Bike Setup:Trek 9800 OCLV, all XTR componentry, White Bros DC110 forks, Hutchinson Mosquito Golds.
Bottom Line:These wheels came with my bike, and after a little bit of apprehension and warnings from my Hammerhead friends, I am impressed. The wheels are stiff, and for cross-country riding they are OK. However, I could swear that my old Sun rims on LX hubs felt "faster" with less rolling resistance. I will ride these wheels till they self destruct, then I am getting some XTR hubs and some Sun rims again...

I'm not so much into jumps and heavy downhilling, so these wheels work fine for me. I've recently noticed a slight wobble on my front wheel, and think that the bearings need replacing, but after 6 years of riding, I don't think that's too bad.

If you don't mind a little extra weight and you are not one of those geeks who crashes all the time for no apparent reason, then do it. Just watch the tire pressure, and make sure your break pads don't drift off the rim and damage the graphite, or whatever it is.. They look awesome, and they should last you, provided they are not on the bike you use to teach yourself how to jump off cliffs. On the other hand, if you are serious about cross country or racing and building a light bike, then I would spend a buck and grab some higher-end Mavic's.

Strengths:I've been riding these for the past 5 years and they've been great. I raced 3 seasons on a front Spin and never had a problem. I did fold a rim in on itself after a crazy mountain run but I just bent it back w/ pliers. They don't start out as round as a spoked wheel but I weigh in close to 200lb and I haven't been able to destroy one yet. They've stayed more true than any other wheel I've ridden.
Weaknesses:Went out of business so good luck finding a pair or getting a warranty on them. Not a high performance wheel and there are lighter/faster wheels available for the price.
Similar Products Used:XT/Mavic wheels, and several other spoked models.
Bike Setup:GT Zaskar LE - XT Components, Kore everything else.
Bottom Line:No other wheels get more looks and if that's important in your wheel choice, find a set that are still available. I'm going to ride mine until they break and at the rate they're going, that's never going to happen. I would race on lighter wheels if possible but I never minded having a 25lb bike even while racing.

The bent axel probably shoudn't have happened but the customer serice was good (keep in mind this was about three years ago) I am very concerened however that my rim is nearly worn through from heavy braking with v brakes and since spin is out of business I may not be able to get it replaced PLEASE E-MAIL ME IF YOU KNOW HOW I CAN GET THE RIM REPLACED.

Bottom Line:I bought these as a second wheelset I would never have to worry about and that is what they have been for 3 years now. I would drop stuff, ride hard, just trash them and they are still as true as the day I bought them. The extra weight did slow down my bike on climbes but it made up for it on the way back down. They are so fast downhill it is amazing. I just got a new bike with hydrolic brakes so I could not use them anymore. I was pissed but then my roomate wanted to use them so the Spins live on. 5 big Chilis for a product that does what it said it would for years and years.

These wheels are great for the XC racer and spin awesome. If they were a little lighter then they would be perfect, I switch between these wheels and Spinergy Xyclone (they are both totally different)and you can tell the difference, the Xyclone is lighter, but these are so much stiffer and stronger. Bottom Line:I have to admit, that I bought the wheels for the looks. I also didn't want the truing problems with spokes. That proved to be quite a stupid mistake. When I think back, for the same dough, I could have had a set of Chris Kings. And I would still have a garantee... But I was young and dumb then. After 3 years of driving, I decided to jump of a 4 ft. drop, but my wheels weren't really all to happy about that. On the front, one spoke just kinda gave way to the pressure. I thought these were supposed to be bomb proof. I only weigh about 150 lbs! Anyway, I then bought Crossmax UST's. WOW!!! What a difference! These start to roll by themselves, there are so light!!! Then I realized, that my bearings on the Spins were totally shot. After only 3 years of TLC. I opened the hubs, and this stinkey brown mass of guck just spilled out. So much for sealing... I read, that if I were to put in replacement bearings from SKF or INA, I would have no chance of any customer service anymore. WEAK! Their bearings are SO awful. I then tried them on my SC Bullit, just for grins, and it seems as if I just gained 30 lbs, or someone is constantly pulling my brakes. Just terrible. Don't buy 'em!

I just wanted to set the record straight. The guys in the shop keep telling you that you have a good bike because they realize you probably cant afford something better. They are trying to hurt your feelings. The Super V was such a poor design to begin with and is so outdated now its not funny. The upside to that is that for the money you paid for it it is truly and “alright” bike. And as we all know its not what you ride but THAT you ride.
Your review on Spin rims is accurate…they look cool and that’s it. The real issue that you seem to be missing is the fact that they cost so much…weight so much and for anyone over 160 lbs don’t last very long. On top pf that…something you probably haven’t had to deal with….Spins (no gone) customer service…was truly and probably the worse in the USA. A poor company that had a poor product that became put dates that they never improved upon. Hope those wheels last for you. If they don’t I have a brand new Spin I got from Spin I can sell to you real cheap.

Bottom Line:If your not too woried about weight, they are a good set. If you don't care aboutc standing out from the crowd and having a little extra weight, don't get them. If you are in it for LOOKS, they make a good choice. I have read a few things by people who slam these wheels but they really need to think about their up-sides. Weight weenies are gonna hate them, but if you cant turn these wheels, why are you riding anyway? If you like going to your local shop after every ride to get your wheels trued and having flat spots on the rims worked on, don't buy these wheels. If you want to get looks from EVERYONE, buy this set. I am 19, 110 lbs, and i have been on my set of spins since 1997. I haven't had them in the shop ONCE. My bike is a late 1996 Cannondale Super V totally tricked out and in PERFECT condition, even the guys at the shop still talk about what a good bike it still is. I don't do little joy rides on my bike. When i go, i go all out, and that means an average of at least 8-10 drops from at least 8-10 feet. I am rough on my bike and especially my wheels. I have a stock rear fox coil over because i weigh so little. Like i said, if you want a good set of wheels, pick up this set, if you are scared of weight, get a road bike.

Bottom Line:I had a review written up. I notice that good old MTBR is doing their censorship thing again. I am writing another review on Spin wheels. Partly because Im shoving it into MTBRs face partly because I don’t want anyone to ever have to go through what I did.

When I first bought these rims I was happy. They looked cool even though they were heavy..and they seemed stronger then most spoke wheelsets. One day after about 4 months of riding I noticed a “what could only be called a fold” in one of the spoke arms. I called up spin and asked them what I should do about it. They said send it back so I did. After about 2 weeks I called them up and asked them if any progress had been made. They said no so I waited another week and called them back. At this point they told me they had cut into my rim and that I would have to pay $250 to replace it. I said that there was no way I was going to pay that. After a weeks worth of accusations by spin that it was my fault the rim had failed they finally agreed to give me a new rim for $40. I took it because it was the best I could get.

To end…I don’t ride with these rims any more. They are heavy and flex to much. Plus I am scared of them failing in the middle of a decent. Spin is out of business (GOOD!!). A company like that should be allowed to exist. The bottom line is that these rims look cool…that is all. They are heavy, they flex, they break easily, they suck. Steer as far away as you possible can from these piece of you know what. Thank God the company has gone under..no wonder… they sucked.

If I could I would give these things -5 chilies

Bottom Line:THESE WHEELS ARE THE BOMB!

When I first bought the bike, I had the Mavic 217's and after only two rides had made a mess of them. After having them trued and replacing the many broken spokes, I bought a Spin front wheel. It took one ride to fall in love with them. Then I ordered a Spin rear. I have ridden for the past four years and have not experienced any problems. I rode a trail with my brother who made fun of my wheels (he had a set of Mavic Crossmax ceramics). At the end of the day, his $800 wheels looked like crap! They were at least 1/2" out of true. He wasn't laughing then! My wheels came out of the ride with little more than some scratches from the many rocke that I hit. I have done many endos after hitting trees, rocks, etc. and still haven't damaged my wheels. I have also taken some drops as large as 5' with no problems. I don't know how people break these things. I think that they tried or just did something crazy that would destroy any wheels. I also only paid $350 for my set, which made them the best deal I have had on my bike. As for the weight issue, I am 170 LBS. and ride a FULL-SUSPENSION BIKE! I'm obviousely not concerned with weight. I don't have any problem with wheel weight. If you want to sacrefice a pound and pay a bunch of money to true your wheels all the time, stay away from Spin. Otherwise, suck it up and work out a little harder. I am planning to go with disc breaks in the future and am trying to find a set of Spin Disc wheels. Drop me a line if you can point me in the right direction. Strengths:Strong, damp and very low maintenance. Ceramic rims. They look cool.
Weaknesses:They are not true. Barely acceptable. If they were spoked, I would say they need to be trued, but I would ride them anyway. They're heavy, about 1000 grams front, 1100 rear, over 4lbs total. Company is apparently out of business, so Spin owners may have to form support groups to deal with their "issues", like worn out hubs, etc.
Similar Products Used:Nothing. Just standard spoked wheelsets, straight 14 gauge w/ medium weight x-country rims.
Bike Setup:97 Stumpjumper m2, 97 marzocchi Z1, raceface turbine cranks, time pedals, xt/xtr drivetrain, old xt v-brakes, riser bar, sbc team control and master tires.
Bottom Line:If you would rather spend your time riding than truing your wheels, these are good. Given that there is no support available, as Spin is apparently out of business, I can't reccommend these unless you get a good deal. They are out of round, but it's impossible to tell when you're slamming over roots and rocks. Don't ride these wheels on the road and you won't notice. If you ride smooth trails, then you don't need these wheels. They are tough as hell, and I don't worry aboutthem on the rooty and rocky trails around here. I don't take any big drop-offs, but I have had a tendency to trash rims in the past, especially the rear. I know they are not indestructible, but I feel that way when I'm riding, and they haven't disappointed me, no matter how sketchy or bad my style might get. For the purists-- forget it, these will never perform as well as a good spoked wheel, but then they're unlikely to crap out on you on the trail when you carelessly nail a rock or root square square on, or sideways, or whatever. With these wheels, improve your chances of riding, rather than walking, back to the trailhead. No product is perfect; choose your compromise. Please e-mail if you know where parts/support can be found.

Similar Products Used:Only conventional spoked wheels
Bike Setup:Cannondale tri bike, 105 group, 16 speed, conti grandprix tyres (foldable)
Bottom Line:These wheels are duds!

They are permanently out-of-round, lethal on downhill technical stages. They're heavy, noisy, slow in a cross wind, don't look like they're attached to the rim very well. The rims are very thin in the side wall and also very soft, so brakes quickly rip the rims apart.
I wasted money on these wheels, and wouldn't recommend any non-conventionally spoked wheel to anybody after this experience.

You can't even re-machine the expletives to a round state in a precision engineering shop because there just isn't enough metal on the side walls of the rims.

I'm sure I'll find a use for these rims - like a pulley over a well or something, or a base for a revolving table, or a game for the kids.

These wheels are bad - but at least they don't kill you like the spinergy sets.

I went so far as to bring my bike into the dealer so he could test ride it himself. After the test ride he still claimed that the wheels were fine. I spoke to another dealer, who also carries these wheels, and he said that Spin wheels bounce like that because they lack enough radial stiffness to prevent the rims from flexing inward, toward the hub, in the areas between the spokes. That must be the case because the wheels appear to very true laterally and radially when there is no weight exerted onto them. Currently, I'm stuck with mine, as well. I like the looks but hate the bouncy ride.

Then, enter the Spins!
They aren't worth a darn on pavement since there is a flat spot between the spokes. Which causes a hop. This hop is not noticeable on the dirt though.
Also, the wheels are slightly out of true and have been that way since day one. But they dont seem to get any worse.
If these things keep performing as they have I am sure they are all I will run.
I got mine for $349. That is high, but I think they will pay for themselves after awhile in cut maintenence cost.

Spins came on it, and the dealer offered me spoked wheels instead. After testing both, I liked the feel of the Spins, so I took them. (the looks didn't hurt either!) I am a snowboard instructor, so after October, I really did not ride much. In October, I only rode 10 - one or two hour cross country rides. I also went to the ski resort for a day. I cleaned my bike up and put it in the basement for the winter. Fast forward to last week. My wife and I went for a ride in Chickies Rock County Park, in Lancaster, PA. (Great trail!) The next day we were heading out again, but when I put my bike on the car, I noticed that the rear Spin had a crack straight through it. Now you do the math, eleven rides! No big deal though, they would probably warranty it. No- The machine is broke and it will be at least three months until they can produce again. Not only that, but I am told that I will probably have to pay half of the replacement cost. I am still waiting to hear the final decision of the company, but if that is true, they can keep their lame wheels. I now have to buy a new wheel regardless of whether or not they warranty my old one. I would not give them any chilis.

I have had a the new EON wheelset on order since Oct '99 and they are finally due to be shipped to me in may 2000. The wait sucks but the possible trade-off might be an inferior product put out too early just to meet demand. The Eon weight of 1,600 grams as opposed to the 2,200 gram weight of the Tri-Spokes will be an interesting ride comparisom. The Eon's will go on the '99Cdale and I will put the Tri-spokes back on the '97 Proflex.I will post a review on the Eons after having ridden on them for a few months.SPIN ROCKS!!!!!

I've been riding mine for over five years without any headaches and have even slammed head on into a car at 25mph without damaging the front wheel at all. The certainly do not stay perfectly true, but they do stay reasonably and functionally true (and that's good enough). Also, the complient ride is nice without noticable lateral flexing--at least not the way I ride. However, they are way too heavy to race. So beat them up during training rides and switch to light wheels on race day. Also, the ceramic braking surface isn't worth the extra money. It is tough to get conventional brake pads to work without squeeking (need to buy the ceramic sqecific pads). So, I recommend sticking to the normal braking surface. That's all.

Weaknesses:
initial rolling resistance. as with any mags...
Similar Products Used:
mavic...
Bike Setup:
used on my 97 GT Avalanche, and my 98 GT LTS-1000... Marzzochi Z-1 Bam.. Long Travel
Bottom Line:I have been riding these wheels for 2 and a half years now, and they are still as true as the day I bought them, they are stong, durable, light weight and they can withstand the hard crashes... I wrecked in san francisco, fell about 10 ft.. and landed on my front rim.. lets just say it survived better than i did.. I never have seen wheels this strong and True. they are well worth the money. Probably the best upgrade I ever made. KEEP up the good work SPIN

Bottom Line:Very nice wheelset. My other review is half dozen down the page. The only problem with these is tire chnages. Of the other 3 wheelsets I've used, these are the hardest for tire changes. I've found some tires that are better than other. TIOGA PHYSCHO EDGE are great and WTB VELOCIRAPTOR and PYRANNORAPTOR are good also. CONTINENTAL TRACTION PRO STEEL BEAD are the hardest to install. Besides the tire changing, that is the only bad thing about the wheels.

Similar Products Used:
Spoke wheels...how boring!!
Bike Setup:
Specialized Hardrock with JettC and now and FSR COMP with Judy in the front and back.
Bottom Line:Bottom Line--Killer. Unless a hundred grams here or there is going to cost you the Tour de France...then...what are you waiting for? If you put the damn things on a Huffy people are like WOW...where'd you get those? Try putting them on a Dualee FSR and its like driving a brand new lincoln continental. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A1...the general Manager was the coolest cat. He told me via e mail...we're here to help And most of the guys at Spin are racers and riders themselves...NO PROBLEMS WITH ENDORSING THESE CATS. I would have put 10 flaming peppers, but 5 was the most they let you put up!!
