Date Reviewed: March 31, 2009
Favorite Trail:Oleta in N Miami
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:Internet
Strengths:Fast, Low rolling resistance, & durable. Had for about 1 1/2 years.
Weaknesses:Poor under hard cornering, and slips on steep climbs. Not good in any wet stuf. Not predictable under any of these conditions.
Similar Products Used:Hutchinson Python, Scorpion, and IRC SERAC XC(BEST).
Bike Setup:Full suspension
Bottom Line:I'm about 180 Lb, and do not see this tire working for me. I had to lower the presure so much that the speed, and lower rolling resistance were more than offset. It was unpredictable during tough climbs, and when cornering they continue to slide until your down. Maybe for a lighter rider this tire will work. Sorry Michelin, but I call it like I see it.

Strengths:Rolled fairly well, durable. Good racing tire.
Weaknesses:None apparent

Bottom Line:Relatively fast rolling tire, very durable the front tire lasted 3yrs including training for and racing in the transrockies challenge, replaced it because the rubber was just plain getting old. Faster than the Maxxis Ignitors but slower than the Schwalbe Racing Ralphs(wore the sidewall out on the first day of the La Ruta Race).

Strengths:Fast rolling, awesome cornering, will NOT load up with mud under any circumstances. Relatively light weight.
Weaknesses:None that I can see.
Similar Products Used:Michelin XLS, Jet S, Panracer Trailblaster, Hutchinson Pythons
Bike Setup:Cannondale F900 custom build
Bottom Line:Fast tire and awesome for the money. You can find them for 20 bucks or so on sale at Performance and stuff. This is a lightweight cross country tire. I've been riding it in a variety of different terrain, not just here in Florida either. These have seen Tsali, Pisgah National Forest, and a massive amount of other northern rocky trails. I haven't had ANY sidewall problems. Maybe some of the people below should learn how to ride a lightweight XC tire? You can't run low pressure and blast into everything in sight! It's all about finesse. I've flatted two of them by slamming the bead against the edge of my rim when I was running way low pressures and riding up a set of stairs, which isn't Michelins fault, it's mine for riding like a dumbarse. I really love the way these tires corner.. very predictable and fast on sandy hardpack.

Favorite Trail:Kokopelli Trail
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:Ebay
Strengths:Awesome grip, long lasting. I have always had good luck with these tires. Easy to fit when you figure out UST Rims - when you think that the tire will not go on squeeze the tire all around to make sure it is in the center of your rim - should roll right on. I race and just ride on these and they are awesome.
Weaknesses:None - fitting UST Tires takes a little practice
Similar Products Used:Hutchinson Pythons - low rolling resistance but scary on downhill corners and useless in any kind of mud.
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel 100, SID SL, Mavic Crossmax UST
Bottom Line:I am still waiting for a better recommendation. Only 1 flat in 2 years is hard to beat. Each set seems to last about 4 months of hard riding before they get too smooth.

Date Reviewed: January 30, 2005
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $50.00
Strengths:Very fast, perdictable, especially at high speed and on loose surface when they start to slide. Available at most bike stores.
Weaknesses:Easy to puncture, side walls tear in more recent models. Much harder to inflate than Hutchinson Python. Poor traction in wet slippery conditions.
Similar Products Used:Michelin Wildgripper, Hutchinson Python.
Bike Setup:Giant XTC1 stock
Bottom Line:I have used these tyres for about 18 months both training and racing. The first 6 to 12 months I was happy and wouldn't have used anything else. The last 6 months or so I have seemed to get a lot of punctures, and in my last ride tore the side wall in both front and back tyre. The back tyre was only about 3 to 4 rides old, and didn't hit anything too nasty to make it tear. The more recent model of these tyres seem to be a bit lighter in the side walls. I now have 5 of these tyres with holes/tears that are too big for me to have confidence with patches. I am now going to go back to Hutchinson Pythons and give them a go for 6 months and decide from there whether I stick with them or try something different. I have noticed when regularly swapping these tyres over lately that the Hutchinsons are much easier to put on and pump up. The Michelins take a lot of mucking around to get the beads to set and take air, whereas with the Pythons I just put them on and pump them up, no fluid or manipulating the beads required. While the Michelins last, they are a fantastic performing tyre, I can confidently start to feel the bike slide on a fire road at 60 km/h and know where I am and how much more I can push it, but unfortunately I can't afford to keep replacing them. To the people at Michelin, if you can make these tyres more durable, I will go back to using them, otherwise they are not up to scratch for the price.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Hooks up well in dry to wet conditions. Sheds mud well.
Weaknesses:Side walls not protected by edge knobs. If you ride rock gardens, shale or loose rocks, this tire is NOT for you. I ripped the side walls multiple times in the first month. Patched with Duct-tape just to get some use out of them. Eventually, the side walls were toast. Even picking good lines, you eventually drag the side wall across a rock.
Similar Products Used:IRC BackCountry, IRC Trail Bear, Panaracer XC

Strengths:Grip well in on various terrain conditions.
Sheds mud well. Holds air for extended period of time
Weaknesses:Cornering at speed!!!!
Sidewalls deteriorate at an excellerated rate.
A royle PITA to mount the first time
Similar Products Used:First set of Tubeless
Bike Setup:Dean ACE-Speedream wheels, SRAM X.0/0.9 Rock Shox Duke Race
Bottom Line:These tires grip well in a variety of conditions. However they are a nightmare when cornering at speed. They break away suddenly and w/o any warning.
I had scars for almost a year from when I first discovered this!

Also, the sidewalls become thread bare in no time. My rear tire had broke threads that were letting air slowly out. My front isn't in much better condition.

Also, mounting these for the first time is a monumental experience, which in my case lead to brused thumbs and a stack of broke tire levers.

Even if I could get these for free I'd be leary of using them.

Strengths:-Lightweight for tubeless
-very fast rolling on tarmac and fire roads
- good grip
- relatively good cornering
Weaknesses:- side walls to weak for offroad use !!!!!!
- too many flats !!!!
Similar Products Used:- Michelin XLS / Front S

Bike Setup:GT Zaskar LE, XTR (old) Crossmax USt, SID Worldcup, Easton Carbon
Bottom Line:Great tires for use on tarmac and fire roads.
Not appropriate for any trail with rocks and rough gravel on it. This tire is too weak for serious offroad use on singletrack with rocks an roots on it.

Believe me. I was a fan of this tire at first. But 4 flats in 5 rides is way to expensive (each ride 20 bucks ?????). Cost me a good place in the most important reason of the whole season.

Bottom line: Michelin (manufacturer of great tires!) heard too much on what the weight weenies were saying !

Perfect would be a little bit more beefy Comp S with some Kevlar or similar stuff in the sidewall and tread to prevent flats.

Strengths:Excellent grip, very predictable, minimal air loss (at least on Mavic XM819 rims)
Weaknesses:Green tread takes a little time to get used to.
Similar Products Used:Python (non-UST), s-works roll model
Bike Setup:Ironhorse Holowpoint with Mavic XM819 rims
Bottom Line:Ok, they are just as hard to mount as most other UST tires. Once stretched, no problems.
They do grip nicely on dirt and even asphalt. Rolls fast and yet handles dirt inclines without slipping. Similar to the Pythons, but seems to have better edge grip and cornering. As for tread wear, the green ones seem to be holding up (can't comment about the black - don't have a pair of those). Grips much better than their looks suggest in sand and loose surfaces, not up to a full knobby, but adequate. Have not experienced any flats yet, but have Stan's as a backup if I ever feel the need. Perhaps some of the issues others have had are not related to the tire, rather their rims. I strongly urge those who are looking at UST rims to take a look at the XM819 - only 60 grams more than the XC717, but much stronger, no spoke holes, and designed specifically for tubeless. Otherwise, I think you should get the Stan's UST solution - their rim strip system seems to be much better than the others out their.
In short, a great tire for cross country riding and very fast on the street too. Not a DH tire, but with 35 to 40 psi, makes a great XC tire (save the Comp S lights for racing - they are much thinner in the sidewall).

Weaknesses:Lack of brute strength.
Similar Products Used:Hutchinson Python UST
Bike Setup:2003 Giant NRS1
Bottom Line:This review is for the Comp S Light UST version.
Overall it performs better than I expected. It compares favorably to a Python, but weighs less. Durability is in the same neighborhood as well. It holds an advantage over the Python in cornering, but only by a slight margin. I have pinch flatted one, but managed to patch it back together. This tire is truly a cross-country race tire. So it trades strength and low traction performance for speed. However, it still surprises me from time to time how well it actually does when the mud gets deep. And when I do have to ride on the pavement, I take a perverse pleasure in passing the occasional road bike.

Strengths:never have I had a hole in a tire before. These tires are really crappy. after maybe 10-15 trips the treads are falling apart like no-other tire ive seen. The tread materials are really cheap.
Weaknesses:tread material and the thickness of the tire. also I have a small ding on the sidewall of my tubeless rim and the tire won't hold a seal. This dent is maybe 1 mm dent. I have fixed the dent but still no seal.
Bike Setup:using a tube because the tire won't hold a seal next to a small dent.
Bottom Line:If your looking into tubeless its not worth the money or time. Ive had more trouble with a tubeless wheelset in less then a year then i have with a tubed wheel in 10 years.

Favorite Trail:Middle Fork, Brevard, NC
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:Nashbar
Strengths:This tire hooks up well in the loose gravel/washout sand in Florida. Have used it in NC at Tsali and around Brevard with the same results. One of the few UST/tubeless tires still available in the 26x1.95 size.
Weaknesses:Does puncture rather easy. Riding in Belleview I recieved a small pinhole from the center tread after riding through a heavily rooted area. Bicycle tires should not cost half as much as a car tire.
Similar Products Used:WTB Velociraptors, Specialized Comps, Continental Twister Pro.
Bike Setup:2003 Fuel 98 with disc brakes.
Bottom Line:Good tire. It compares well with the Velociraptors I had on my other bike. I wish the Velociraptors were available in a UST/tubeless version. The tread does wear out quicker than other tires I have tried. It might not be the perfect tire for all of the conditions I ride, but it does a decent job. No tire does everything great (although the Velociraptors do come close), so you have to pick the tire that is best for your conditions. If you ride over wet roots and rocks all of the time, this is probably not the best tire for you.

To answer those who have had a difficult time putting this tire (or any other UST tubeless) on the rim, I offer this advice. Put the tire in the cloths dryer for about 10 minutes. This heats the bead up and makes it more pliable. I have done this with both my Bontrager rims and some Mavic CrossRoc rims with these tires. I watched a service technician try to put a refrigerator gasket on that would not fit worth a darn (too small even though it was the correct part number). He put the gasket in the dryer and put it on in less than 5 minutes. I did the same with the tire and it worked well for me.

Bottom Line:I bought these tires at the beginning of our race season back in March primarily to use for wet courses and I ended up using them over half the season. Two of our first three races were all-out mud fests. The Comp S's hooked up nicely and cleared mud almost immediately upon picking up momentum. As the season went on and the courses became dryer, I left these on. The only time I really felt uncomfortable was in July on the hard baked Ga. red clay. Its hard to get the front end to bike with these tires on hard-pack. I look at these tires as a loose-intermediate terrain race tire. If you use them for that, they are great. If you buy these tires as your everyday tire, you will probably be disappointed. And by the way, I haven't experienced any problems with them holding air or ripping.

The weight is only 615 gr. so acceleration is fine, but I strongly recommend to choose an alternative with 750-800 gr., i.e. the Wildgripper XLS.
Interesting: According to some guys around the tube type of the Comp S Light seems to be much stronger, even with light tubes.

Strengths:This is for the 2003 Comp S Lite. The Lite is definitely a racing tire only, due to it's lightweight construction. Race em' then take them off and go back to your regular training tire. They roll fast, conform to the terrain well, have great grip and track nicely through the sand.
Weaknesses:Fast wear and tender sidewalls. Definitely not for rough, rocky racecourses or rides with jagged rocks. I've killed two of them in a month's time. The first time was a jagged cut on the rolling part of the tire. The second time was yesterday, with a sidewall gash. The sidewalls are really thin and very susceptible to injury.

No problems installing, rate of pressure drop is about the same or less as any non ust tire, relatively low weight, and they seem to hold a tighter line than the pythons. No sidewall problems even throught the profane word for excrement. Not sure about whether more volume is warranted (why increase the contact patch if the smaller patch holds so well). Anyone have anything to say about that? Ride.

Strengths:I have used this tire for 12 months on Bontrager Propels, first on the rear, then on the front. It works WAY better on the front. No punctures, no problems. The tire now needs replacing, after a season of racing. It leaks from 40 psi to about 20/25 psi during the week.
Weaknesses:Traction is good, although I have had to learn to exert greater flexion through the bars and weighting to feel confident in the cornering. I am gboing back to pythons to see how they compare, i used to really like my tubed pythons for a fast rolling racing tire. My friend did puncture a WG S on his new Scapel, and he did not like the sidewall traction.
Similar Products Used:Non-tubeless pythons (front), Panaracer Fire Pro XC (rear)
Bike Setup:An original Trek Fuel 100 with standard upgrades to XTR and some carbon. Rolf Propel wheels with tubeless rim strip.
Bottom Line:They worked fine for me (So Cal dry conditions), and I would recommend them as a front tire- fast, roundish profile tire with moderate knobs. I had no hassles that some of the other users reported.

Strengths:Rolls smooth and fast, corners nicely, good traction in all conditions, holds air well, light for a UST tire
Weaknesses:Heavier than tubed setup, not a good front tire, wears a little faster than I'd like (1 a season)
Similar Products Used:Conti Explorer UST, numerous tubed Specialized, Ritchey, Continental, Panaracer
Bike Setup:Kona King Kikapu, Mavic Crossroc UST disc wheels
Bottom Line:Everyone has different needs in a tire. No tire can do all things well- BUT- this tire has been as close to a universally good tire as I have ridden. I am surprised by the number of negative reviews on this tire and every other UST tire on this site. Is everyone else on hardtails with old Bontrager "tubeless rimstrip" rims? Or is it lack of understanding of the technology? The Comp S is hard to mount on my Mavic UST rims- the first time. Use a spray bottle filled with Simple Green and water on the beads to help them slip on easier. Then it stretches out and is easier after that. I use it as a rear tire, and run 30-35 psi. I weigh about 160 with camelbak. I ride and race aggressively on local rocky, steep, loose, mixed condition trails, and in Moab a lot too- I've never had a leak, a puncture, or a problem with my Michelin. It is an XC RACE TIRE- maybe some reviewers are thinking UST equals "freeride"? Except on true smooth hardpack, which I never see, this tire rocks. For how light, fast and cushy it is, it has great traction everywhere. If it slides in a corner, it's totally controllable. This tire doesn't even lose more than 2psi a week. All equipment is a compromise- this tire gives up a little traction and sidewall thickness for more speed and lightweight. That works great for its INTENDED USE. If you need ultimate traction and sidewall strength, hook yourself up with some Intense DS tires or something. Damn.

Strengths:looks good, the Michelin brand(you would think that it should mean somthing!!), traction is good but not great under all conditions, rolling resistence(lack of) and acceleration is great(when your not riding with a inner tube).
Weaknesses:putting these b@st@rds on!!, I have the hang of it now but it still @#$%! me off, very week bead, week side wall(very slight leek), hard to seat(especialy with a tube inside)
Similar Products Used:Panaracer fireXpro UST, VERY BAD, compounds too soft, grippy but wears too quick, tire riped off the rim going around a corner....
NOT A HAPPY BUNNY
Bike Setup:ID, Fox Forxs, WTB hubs, Mavic 3.1rims, XT, XTR, the usual stuff
Bottom Line:I like the idea of UST, as a designer I think that simplifying the problem and reducing parts SHOULD make life easier for the consumer. But saddly this is not the case...They have done nothing but make life harder. May be i should try different rims? I dont know, but so far I,ve had around 10 pinch flats in the last 6 months, most on the back. I run a regular air presure, I guess the terrain I ride is quite agressive which is the bottom line...
If you ride smooth trails with no rocks, roots, bushes, dirt, gravel, dust, debris and have a compact pocket compressor then these tires are great, honestly..
When i first got the tires i thought they were great, climbing especialy, like the goat dose...you know. Its just when they puncture your life becomes hell.

The problems which need to be resolved are:
The bead thickness(increase)
make the tire removal/fitting process as easy as a regular tire.
make it seat(with/without tube) easier without having to inflate to 80psi
Use a compound which rubber patches can stick to.

I'll probably add few at a later on..

The low rating is not a dig at michelin but more at the UST system. I think we need 1 manufacturer to make both the tire and rim to come up with a good durable system. As i said tubless is the way forward but at the moment we need to get through the teething problems which is mainly durability related. Then we buy the 2003 tires, test them and write bad reviews about them....Rome wasn't built in a day. Im not saying we need to take 300 years on perfecting this though.

Jons final thought:
now - Buy tubes
2years time - tubless

Strengths:Good gripping on variety of terrain experienced in N GA area - sand, rocks, mud, clay, gravel.
Weaknesses:Sidewall tears!
Similar Products Used:Hutchinson Pythons; Panaracers
Bike Setup:brand new (stock) Scalpel 2000;
Bottom Line:I've only owned my Scalpel since June 2002 and already have blown BOTH front and rear Michelin Wildgrippers CompS (tubeless) on relatively tame terrain at Sope Creek. Both instances were with 40-45 psi in the tires (more than the 32 psi I was told I could expect for a cushy/good gripping ride)and on trails that I've ridden for 9 years with my old bike set-up (my old tires had to finally be replaced due to rubber ROT...not sidewall tears and punctures).

The bad news: I agree with previous posts - it does seem like the sidewalls are the big issue here with the tubeless tires from Michelin; I got tubeless tires expecting LESS issues with pinch flats and have really been dissapointed with the supposed benefits of them, so far (weight, less pressure = more grip, etc). It seems I am getting MORE timid on my bike instead of more agressive as am worried about blowing a tire, again!

The GOOD news: I had to buy a new rear tire from ATL Cycling as they wouldn't cover it, but they covered the 2nd one (today) at no charge (THX, Vinings Shop!). I also called Michelin and they are taking back both tires to inspect - if it IS sidewall tears (it is), they will replace them with new ones. That's good customer svc!

Bottom line - good tires when they don't fail me; not really seeing the benefits of tubeless thus far...

Strengths:light for tubeless, good grip ans stability under braking. fast rolling on cement, or hard packed dirt.
Weaknesses:heavy compared to most standard tire and tube combo. tires turn too quick. not very good high speed tracktion, or slow rocky technical trail tracktion. way too hard to mount/unmount.
Similar Products Used:michelin comp s (not so great), hutchinson (ok for the rear), panaracer fire xc pro (awsome all around)
Bike Setup:Giant nrs team, mavic cross max ceramic, xt/xtr components, raceface next lp, panaracer fire xc pro, sram rocket 9 speed, avid single digit ti, rock shock duke race.
Bottom Line:On pavement or hard compact dirt tracks, this tire is very comfortable, fast and grippy. The problem I had with the tire is when I hit a hill, I can actually feel the extra weight of the tires, but this could also be the way the tires gripped when being cranked up a hill while responding to the terrain, and what I mean by this is, I found the tires to be to spongy/ bouncy. At first I thought the tires were just soaking up everything perfectly, but after testing them, I found that they were actually just bouncing off of everything, which made it very hard to hold a line and keep a consistent pedal stroke over rough terain. Another thing I noticed, you know when you just hit an edge of a large, smooth rock, well my panaracers will grip that rock, give me perfect feedback and ride right over that rock. The michelins ether bounce of of it or slide off of it, not giving me very good confidence. Finally I feel that the tire has to much of a rounded profile. This makes it a fast rolling tire, but for me, a tire that turns way too quick. To give you a true example. I tested the michelins back to back with my panaracers on a 10.5 mile respectable single track trail with a bit of every thing thrown in except water. My time on the panaracers was 42 minutes and on the michelins 48 minutes and I was blocked by twice as many slower riders when I ran the trail with the panaracers. One great thing about the michelins was the stability under braking. I found that the back end would stick really good under hard braking instead of braking loose.

A couple last notes: the michelins are 1.95 front/back, and I run a 2.2 front and a 1.8 back with the panaracers. This is kind of an odd set up but I've tested it and it gives me the perfect feed-back, speed, grip, weight, and turning speed. Finally I found all of these same characteristics to be true with the standard michelin wild gripper comp s tire/tube combination, except the tire tube combo gave me better feed-back and wasn't as bouncy or spongy.

Bottom Line:I've used many tubless tires over the past year and a half. These are my favorite. Don't hook up quite as well as some others I've used, but when you take their weight into consideration, they're great. Never punctured-this includes using them in at least 6 races and countless training rides. I weigh 170, so I'm not exactly a light weight. Best combination of weight, durability, and traction I've found in a tubless tire. I have a relatively smooth riding style. Perhaps this accounts for my lack of tears and punctures. By the way, they aren't free ride tires-in case you didn't know. Use the right tool for the right job.

Bike Setup:99' Dakar expert custom built - Zoke X-Fly, Rolf wheels, Truvative/SRAM 9.0SL drivtrain, Thompson, Avid, etc...
Bottom Line:I have been riding these tires since last October and have a decent amount of miles on them. (Injury kept me off the bike for several months) Initially had the usual trouble with keeping them inflated, but after putting SLime in them did not have anymore troubles - DON"T use the new Tubeless sealant made by Slime use the good ole stuff! (LBS reccomended and I concur) Anyways, I have been riding them as often as possible lately (50-75 miles month, wish I had more time) and I would say they are pretty solid and predictable. It has been 7 months and until recently I have not had a flat, which I think is pretty awesome. Great tip for tubeless riders go buy an automotive tire patch kit and keep a couple of the pacthes with some rubber cement with you. The patch will hold but I have yet to find a portable pump that I can use to reset the bead, maybe a CO2 cylinder would work. Then you would not have to carry a tube with you, maybe...
Wish they made a 2.1 inch version for the extra air volume like my Pythons. These are faster but I can't run super low pressure due to all the rocks here in AZ. I like the tread design, I get decent traction even though the front tends to brake free occasionally. All in all one of the better tires I've ridden. Great in dry conditions with low rolling resistance. Tubeless maybe not perfect, but considering how few flats I've had this year I would say the Comp S are definitely worth trying.

5 chilis for value (mine were technically free)
3 chilis for a good solid tire (not great...)
