Strengths:Look Good ona silver bike 2.3's hooked up well on sno/mud/wet roots & nights rides @ first.
Weaknesses:On crunchy snow/ice 1.5 years later they feel like wet moccasins. Why cause I have to ride on pavement sometimes to get to & from Pavement Kills'em.
Similar Products Used:I could have a tire fire environmental disaster in my basement. Lately I 've been buyin for color.. hence the gray stripes ( But that should be up in the Strengths section.)
Bike Setup:Soft tail SC X-lite with Crossmax In winter we either go to big 2.3's or studs -wimps get studs.
Bottom Line:These scorpions by Hutch are nice 'n lite for a big 2.3. When I race em my times are faster then on 2.1 kendas. & when you run em @ 30 lbs as suggested they start the first 6 months hold in over anything. My ultimate test is roots @ 2:30 pm under lites in the rain or dewey fog. Last winter they held well on crunchy snow/ice/frozen dirt that our trails become around new years.Yesterday It's -6 cel sunny as h__l the trails are shiney slick My buddies with the nobs are stickin in & I came home with a shiner to the right eye & my crash on film. Today its snowin so I'm shoppin for new tires & leaving my thoughts behind. They should last longer... With the Stans S they held air/nitrogen for months.

Favorite Trail:fast singletrack
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $25.00
Purchased At:second hand at a semi-shabby bike shop
Strengths:Wide print, good cornering traction, fast rolling, surprisingly good for landing smaill jumps and drops, nice looks, light weight, usable for tubes and tubeless systems.
Weaknesses:questionable traction on gravel, sand/dirt and loose terrain. doesn't look like it will last too long.
Similar Products Used:All sorts of Panaracer, Maxxis and Richey tires.
Bike Setup:04` Kona Coiler w/ clip-in pedals.
Bottom Line:This review is for a 2.1" (though I suspect it's wider than that) UST scorpion tire on a regular tube, not tubeless. I wanted a tire that had more bite and stability than the 2.1" Richey Z-max I had on my rear wheel. The scorpion fills the ticket, but gives the feeling of a thin tire that tackles small bumps and stones, instead of engulfing and rolling over them. The tire performs well in terms of tranction, cornering and acceleration, but once you get off the more comfortable riding terrain (large rocks, hard-packed soil), the tire transmits to your bottom a little more of the trail than you might like.

Strengths:They look cool?
Weaknesses:Expensive, poor grip in the wet, and they wear out VERY fast.
Bike Setup:2003 Cove Handjob, 2004 Marzocchi Marathon S, Chris King headset, SRAM XO twist shifters & rear derailleur, XTR front derailleur, Truvativ Stylo team cranks, Eggbeater SL, Mavic Crossmax Enduro Disc, Hope Mono Minis, Thompson post & stem, Selle Italia Flight titanium, Easton Monkeylight carbon bars, WTB Weirwolf 2.1
Bottom Line:This review is for the Scorpion 2.3 UST (with the grey stripes). I rode these for less than 800 Km and they were pretty much bald in the center. They performed well on dry, hard-packed singletrack. But whenever I took them anywhere else they were average at best. These aren't terrible tires, they just are not great tires (not even good, imho). When you factor in the cost, they really aren't worth it. Given the army of better product out there, I'd recommend avoiding these.

Strengths:good uphill traction as rear tire. this tire holds better than most rear tires i've used. great climber.
Weaknesses:very, and i mean very, poor downhill traction as rear tire, though i am improving my downhill skid-cornering technique. it seems that the degree of the grabbiness depends on the low psi, and not on knobbies (which are good for braking). for example, on downhill sections (nothing super technical), you basically have just to get a good skid on, and ride it, pray that your front tire holds and thank yourself for not using a hutch scorpion for your front tire. what's that? a long downhill? plan on gradually picking up speed as you skid 'cause you can't maintain your drop-in speed. hairraising to say the least!

Bottom Line:This is the best all around tire I've ever used. Extensive trail riding and frequent racing. The soft rubber hooks up superb, it really shines on rocks and roots. They wear fast, as does any high performance sticky tire. I run them at about 32 lbs. The outside row of knobs are perfect for fearless cornering. I've been through several sets and have had minimal leakage problems, I run slime for tubeless in mine. I change tires every so often but keep coming back to these.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Reasonable rolling resistance
Good cornering and off-camber grip
Weaknesses:Porosity of sidewalls
Not enough grip on medium to loose climbs
Similar Products Used:Hutch Mosquito and Spider, Geax Sedona (UST versions)
Bike Setup:Custom wheelseet with DT hubs and Mavic UST rims, running Eclipse latex sealant and removeable-core valves.
Bottom Line:This review is for the 1.75 version.

I started using latex solution for the first time because of these tires. Not to prevent flats, but because they were losing air due to the porosity of the sidewalls. I dunked them in the bathtub and was shocked to see a constant stream of microbubbles emanating from the sidewalls! With the latex, they held air for weeks on end, and I never flatted with them, so I got over it.

These tires roll ok on hard ground, but corner strangely due to the low center knob/high lateral knob design. Nevertheless, I bought them specifically for soft muddy conditions during winter, so I am rating them only for this use, for which they don't clog up and grip well coming into muddy corners and off-cambers. They show their limitations when attempting to climb slippery slopes, as the central tread is just not meaty enough. Every tire is a compromise, but this one doesn't quite hit the mark for me. It's neither a hard conditions nor soft conditions tire, yet I don't consider it an all-around tire either.

Strengths:Gargantuan, wide and stable
Weaknesses:rolling resistence, is high because these are LARGE tires.
Similar Products Used:Fire XC pro, IRC Claw COMP ( best tire ever IMO) many many others
Bike Setup:'04 Jamis Dakar XLT 3.0 Stock except for a shorter stem ad DH bars for Stability in tight singletrack.
Bottom Line:I like these tires because they give you a wide footprint which does many good things for you on the trail. When it's rocky they help keep the bike stable at any speed even if your creeping along behind those not as gifted on dowhilling, It's a good technical climbing tire, I liked it on gravel too, it seemed to float nicely. It cleans well if you get any horse sh!t on it which is a good thing, and I really liked it for riding at a brisk pace through tight single track, it seemed to hug everything especially burms, it also didn't do curly shuffle on any loose moderately fast downhill sections that had loose bigger rocks waiting to pluck you from your bike. Climbing on smooth trails with this tire was difficult because it's wide and slows you down, but I wasn't bothered by that, I caught everyone on the downhills and single track because I was the only one not slipping and sliding. Nice tire, I'd reccomend it definately even though I had hear that these tires were horrible. I disagree they were excellent and very comfortable to ride on for long durations.

Bike Setup:2003 Ellsworth Truth with Romic rear, Fox TALAS RLC fork, Chris King headset and ISO disc hubs, Mavic 819 UST rims, XTR crankset, Magura Marta SL brakes, Easton Monkeylite SL handlebar and EC70 seatpost
Bottom Line:Decent tubeless tires, seems to work well in all conditions. I have ridden Tiger Mountain in the sopping wet with these, and, yes, they do slip and slide a bit over roots, but I've yet to try a tire that'll grip under those conditions. I felt that they did an admirable job. They work quite well in hardpack terrain; haven't tried it in sandy conditions. They hold air well, but I do have to inflate/check them after every week, and no I don't use Stan's tubeless sealant.

To the reviewer about 3 reviews down who gave them 1 chili each, I would say that his experience might be unique. I haven't had a problem with these, and would certainly purchase these again if I can get 'em at a reasonable price.

Weaknesses:none found so far
Similar Products Used:IRC Mythos 2.1, Specialized Enduro 2.2, Panaracer TrailBlaster 2.0
Bike Setup:04 Specialized Enduro w/CrossMax XL rims
Bottom Line:I ride New England trails which are rocky, rooty and mostly hard-pack. I find these tires perfect for this environment.

They have fantastic grip over almost everything except deep sand and mud but I don't think these tires are designed for that (small knobs on top). Surprisingly, they're good when wet too (of course, no tire will be great when wet). Corners well and allows me to float over rock gardens and technical stuff with ease. These are big volume tires which add cush to the suspension (I'm 205#). They handle big drops with no trouble.

I see that some people are upset by how quickly they wear. Although I do see some wear (only on the rear) it isn't excessive and this is the trade-off for a grippy soft compound tire. My suggestion for those below is to talk to other riders in your area and find out what tire works well for them.

They are a bit pricey but I don't mind paying for a good product. Besides, when I add up how much I've saved in tubes and lost riding time on the trail, these things are more than paying for themselves.

Haven't had any issues at all and will definitely buy more in the future.

Strengths:Really hooks up well in the mud. I'm riding only the 1.75 but it is good enough for a 138lb rider. Keep in mind nothing is going to work on wet rock and roots, I don't care what anyones says. Climbed some steep stuff on this little skinny tire....
Weaknesses:You can't expect them to roll like a Python, so don't - okay? A little vibration to let you know the knobbies are there. Mine's narrow so cornering is a little careful until you get used to it. Tread is not super duper durable, can only see some wear after dragging rear a bit down a really steep pitch. Also like most UST's I guess, they are a little hard to get on. The last bit is really a killer.
Similar Products Used:Panacer Trailblaster 1.85
Bike Setup:Specialized S-Works Epic, Full XTR, Mavic Crossmax, Shimano 959.
Bottom Line:Good tire for mud. Get a wider model if you are larger or want to have more carefree cornering. If things are really muddy you can go with more aggressive tread but then you give up some rolling resistance too. This seems to be a good compromise. Trying a Specialized Rockster now for dry days and it rolls very fast, but again no hook up on slicker muddier trails. Best to have another set of rims if you are going to play the condition specific tire game.

Bottom Line:I have only had my VT1 for 1 week and these tires were on the bike when I bought it. I have taken it on 3 (serious) rides, and was surprised how horribly these tires performed. I slipped and slided away, especially on wet roots and rocks. I would hope that Giant will spec better tires for a bike as expensive as the VT1. Several people told me that one of the benefits of tubeless tires was that that rarely, if ever, go flat. I got a fat old flat on my 2nd. ride. the hike back was better than the ride.

Strengths:Hmmmm... It certainly dosn't weigh much. They roll nice n fast on hard packed surfaces. Such as street. HAHAHAHA! Can be run at ULTRA low pressure. Probably good for 'pure' cross country weight-aware people.
Weaknesses:Where's the grip? I don't feel confident with these tires. And that's not because I have a hideous face. I thought the point of tires was to keep you firmly on the trail/road even if you have to corner, brake or run over small animals (I do not condone running over animals). These tires don't really do that all the time. The (tiny) side knobs are spaced well apart so when you corner hard you get gradually less grip. Not cool.

Bottom Line:Wanted to go tubeless; went to a bike shop where I am and they suggested these, even though they didn't ride themselves. They said that these have a good type of tread for this area (I'm traveling right now). I had IRC SeracXC that came stock with the bike and they were way better than these P.O.S. They slide all over the place. Even in muddy conditions they didn't hold a line, sure they threw the mud quickly and didn't cake up but if they didn't hold my line in the first place who cares. It felt like I was running on a flat so I put more pressure in there. I want to see if this whole running lower PSI had anything to it. Well, it didn't help. The rear end wouldn't track true when I locked up the brakes. I put my old SeracXC back on the rear tire and left the scorpion on the front and marked improvement on rear traction. So I ordered some weirwolves via online. We'll see....I really like the whole tubeless idea but when the bike shop didn't know what Stans was I should of been suspicious (I had a bottle with me from when I bought the bike) BTW...I'm really impressed with Stans
I wouldn't recommend them so I'm an either all the way or no way type of guy. BTW...I'm no expert on tires by any means but its just my 2 cents

Similar Products Used:Michelen Comp S UST
Bike Setup:2002 Gary Fisher Sugar 1 with Mavic Crossmax UST
Bottom Line:I noticed several people rating these as 2.0, but mine are 1.75's.

The Good: These are a good tire to add to your arsenal. I have run them in every condition and I'm very happy with them. I typically run them with 40 - 45 psi depending on conditions. They seem to grip good on the roots and do a great job of clearing the mud, snow, etc. They cut right through sand as long as you keep your wheels spinning. With narrow tire size and block config, you get lean pretty far over in the turns before the sides hook up. When they hook up hang on because they go.

The Bad: These tires are not made for pavement. Really! You get some gnarly vibrations coming up through the frame. Thank sziatsu. These babies also wear pretty quick. The terrain around here is mostly dirt and sand with a lot of round rocks. I can see where a more abusive environ would tear them up. Also, they were a b!@#$ to get on the rims. They loose enough air overnight that I have to check air before each ride. Which I did anyway. Notice I said part of you arsenal, not the whole tamale.

The Ugly: They look good on a set of black rims like the Mavics. Standing in the start shoot... they look like they could take a leg off if you get in the way.

Strengths:Looks!!! The tires look awesome on the bike
Weaknesses:In the dry rocky Californian climate these tires die. After one ride the nobes started to rip off of the tire surface. After 5-10 rides they were virtually gone in the middle of the tire. The side nobes stay on a bit longer but they are definitely not a tire for dry rocky technical trails. IMO only good for mud. For a great tire try the Kenda Kharisma UST, they take all kinds of abuse and until a bad fall where I punctured the rear they are great. But I will patch the tire and keep riding it definitely.

Strengths:looks, good tread pattern
Weaknesses:wear, wear, wear, sidewalls, sidewalls, sidewalls
Similar Products Used:none on this bike, Panaracers on previous bike
Bike Setup:Cannondale Jekyll 1000 pretty much as bought
Bottom Line:I've been running these tyres since buying my Jekyll a few months back and having read the mixed reviews here was interested to see how they worked.

I've ridden these on dry, sandy, rocky trails XC and tricky/technical stuff, trails which give all my non-tubeless mates pinch flats and rocky drops up to three foot high. Both singletrack and firetrail. Also ridden them on tarmac (laps of the local park and longer road rides).

I can only fault these tyres for two reasons, otherwise I'd be happy with them. Firstly, they wear quickly. Mine are now at the point where they have minimal traction on sand or loose surfaces. The tacky compound keeps them working otherwise but after three months the tread is down to about 5mm.

The second problem is the weakness of the sidewalls, at the weekend I was riding full speed along a hard packed firetrail and a loose rock chipped my rim which in turn punctured the tyre. The rim damage wasn't sharp (I was able to put a tube in and finish the ride) and the rim was only slightly bent (not enough to prevent the tyre from sealing) but the tyre still punctured above the bead.

If these tyres didn't wear so quickly and had stronger sidewalls I would stick with them, why do we have to sacrifice so much for weight? Just get fitter riding a very slightly heavier bike! I now have to find an alternative tubeless tyre, from initial reviews on here I'm not too impressed with what's available. If anyone reading this has a suggestion please email me!

I'd give these four stars, but will demote them for wear and sidewall weakness. Value rating is related to the lifetime they've given for their replacement cost (but until Hutchinson fix these problems I will be shopping elsewhere)

Strengths:Light for tubeless (1.85"), good traction in wet, haven't punctured yet.
Weaknesses:While the bike wasin storage for a few months, the tyres deflated and the sidewalls cracked a bit. As a result they loose half their air every night, but that's my fault.
Similar Products Used:First tubeless tyres
Bike Setup:F3000sl, Easton, XTR, Marta discs...
Bottom Line:Basically a good tire, seems silly to run such a thin tubeless tire, but I still run them at 40psi and I can feel the tyre conforming to each root instead of slipping over it. I haven't damaged my rims yet! Overall it works well in sloppy mud and most conditions, the rear struggles a bit on wet climbs but traction is good otherwise and bump absorption is pretty good for a 1.9" tire. Pumping them up before each ride is a pain, some sealant would fix that. I'll try the 2.0 on the front and Mosquito on the rear once the trails dry up.

Strengths:Great look for that tires. Very large (it says 2.00 but they are large as 2.30). Very low tires pressure admitted.

I'm 95kg and i ride it at 2.0/2.0 and i'have noticed a large tire print on the ground that gives a decent safety feel on DH. I'm not a good DH rider but my skill have improved much with this tire. The fact is that this tire is 2.00 but looks like a 2.30.. it's very very large. The only weakness is that is no lightweight tire so buy it only if you look for control instead of lightness.

Weaknesses:Hard to set the the bead without a compressor. Exspensive
Similar Products Used:My first tubeless. Usually switch between an xc racing slick and velociraptors depending on conditions.
Bike Setup:2002 Kelin Adept Pro
Bottom Line:I've only ridden it a couple of times, but it seems decent so far in both wet and dry conditons. I think it hooks up better then the raptors and still rolls pretty fast. And, while the racing slicks I often ride are really fast, they pinch flat a lot and immediately pack up in any sort of mud. So, once I got the bead set, they seem to be holding a consistant pressure. I still think this technology is being perfected, but will give these a go until something better in the tubeless category comes along. But it if you want a versatile all-conditions tire that will still handle and roll.

Strengths:Good all round on mixed wet Dales surfaces - rocky ups/downs, peaty bogs/rutted tracks, grass, farm tracks and tarmac.
Solid planted directional feel on the front and enough grip on the back without too much rolling resistance. The edges really bite well on off camber deep downhill ruts.
Riding with folk who use IRC Mythos/Back Country/ Continental Exp I get bogged down and spin the back less.
On 3.1 UST rims I maybe need to top up the pressures every month or so about 5PSI - thats with an average of 4x 2hr Yorkshire Dales rides per week, mostly nocturnal now.
Weaknesses:You need a lot of air pressure initially to seal on the rims
but I've only had one pinch flat so far and no thorns or rips. Repair with car tyre patch works fine so avoid Hutchinsons own expensive repair kits.
Wear is not out of the ordinary but eventually they will be expensive to replace.
MBR MBUK give them 5/5 call them fantastic/their favorite treads so they will be everywhere soon
Similar Products Used:No other Tubeless but a variety of tubed offerings from IRC
Panaracer and Hutchinson
Bike Setup:Rotwild RCC 07/fox forks/Hope Minis
Bottom Line:For a typical long UK cross country ride you need at least three sorts of bike and as many tires, if you dont have a bike caddy and are restricted to one bike then in my opinion you wont find a more versatile tire than this. In bone dry conditions I'd change to Pythons front and back.
(I wonder if folk who complain of air leakage have appropriate rims - I ve heard of stranger things, and if you lock the back wheel on tarmac the nobbles are fairly soft and will shred off fast)

Bottom Line:Firstly I really like these tyres but they have there place.

Hutchinson Scorpion UST's would suit rides which mix road and semi-dry fast trails, keep them away from wet tree roots and muddy slopes, I've probably done more miles sideways than forwards in the mud!. I'd done around 20 miles before blowing out the rear tyre jumping down a slightly rocky trail which also damaged my Mavic Rim!, was travelling around 27mph with 40psi - was not impressed as the tyre was written off (with a hole I could walk through) and could not be repaired. I've since replaced it with another Scorpion and covered an additional 350 miles without problems, but I take it much slower over sharp rocks.

I make a real effort not to lock out the rear tyres on tarmac as it scrubs chunks of rubber from the centre grips, wearing very quickly.

These are difficult to fit the first time but seem to get easier and seat properly around 50psi. I only take them up to 60psi to get a good seal and them reduce to 40psi ready to use.

I have the 2.0 but they are massive. More like 2.3, I swear I could ride across water and stay afloat.

Good tyre really, not good for traversing really muddy slopes, go buy some if you don't mind the cost!

Strengths:They're tubeless! Very fast rolling.
Weaknesses:Zero bite as a rear tire - servicable under a lot of conditions but a big liability on technical rocky, rooty climbs. I know its going to slip - its just a question of when. There are times when I feel like I have a slick on the back of the bike. The rear center treads are practically gone after 6 weeks (shredded on the rocks).

Bottom Line:I wasn't sold on tubeless tires until I bought this bike. I am now sold 100% - tubeless tires rule once you get off of the buff and onto rocky, rooty, Northeast singletrack. The benefits of running low pressure outweigh any negative you can think of.

With that said, this tire's only merit is the fact that it is tubeless. It has zero bite on the rear and can spin without a warning on any hill with more that one rock or root. I'm hoping someone comes out with a new rear tread designs for 2003 - otherwise I'll probably try the Kenda Kharisma's. Weaknesses:Wears really quickly on the rear, first set lasted 6 weeks, then low tread results in a weakened tyre prone to puncture. Strange sizes, mine are 2.0s but they look bigger, smaller ones look horrid

Bottom Line:Expensive but as long as you can bear the expense then a worthy tyre.

One tip: when you puncture a tubeless on the trail I gather that you put an inner tube in and repair at leisure back home. However remembering where the puncture is difficult so you end up taking the tyre off, taking out the tube, putting the tyre back on, inflating and playing spot the hole. Carry a small piece of blue chalk on the trail and mark the puncture when it occurs - saves time back home

Strengths:Lower air pressure offers excellent mud, rock, and root traction. This tire is supple and forgiving. Increase the air pressure and roll the hard pack...
Weaknesses:Most tubeless tires tend to loose a nominal amount of air and the Scorpion is no exception. I'll take the performance over the small amount of air loss. I did roll the front tire on an exposed rock going down hill (during a race), but the wheel was perpendicular to my frame.
Bike Setup:Scorpion tubeless tires accompained with Mavic (Crossmax) Tubeless wheelset.
Bottom Line:After three years of frustration at the 24hrs of Snowshoe, I finally found a tire that would compliment the demanding WV terrain. The Scorpion tire allowed me to ride many of the sections I had difficulty riding in previous years (off-camber roots, rocks, mud). This tire didn't pack up too much in the sticky mud of WV, that's a big plus for me.

Like most tubeless tires you're going to have nominal air retention issues, but as technology improves, so will tubeless tires. To combat air loss make sure your tire is seated. Put the maximum amount of air in the tire (58psi for the Scorpion) and then back the air pressure down to your preferred psi (before you back the psi down, let the air pressure stand for a while).

For me, this is a great tire for all riding conditions. If you don't want to continually switch tires for different conditions try the Hutchinson Scorpion. I do ride a different tire for really dry conditions, but if I had only one tire I'd pick the scorpion.

Strengths:Agressive, very big for a 2.0 yet still rolls decently (not a lot of knob grinding), cool new silver "stripes" on casing (denotes tubeless for Hutchinson)
Weaknesses:HEAVY, very heavy, way to heavy for XC. The casing is downhill suitable. The weight can be felt when pedaling.
Similar Products Used:Hutchinson Pythons UST, Hutchinson Mosquito 1.85 UST.
Bike Setup:Cannondale CAAD 5, SRAM X.0, Mavic Crossmax tubeless, Hayes disc brakes, etc.
Bottom Line:I was looking for something a little more agressive (read: more side knob than the Python. The Python rolls very fast but is a little sketchy when leaned over). The shop recommended these. To appreciate the feel of these: If you raced motocross and rolled down a hill without hitting the gas, you know the feeling of how heavy the wheels are without any power? Well, that's how these feel. Their traction is incredible, and it should be the tire is like a 2.3, not 2.0. The casing is stiff like a downhill tire and the resulting ride is the same (with 30 psi in the tires). If you want to mimic the Python "cushy" feel run like 12 psi. Surprisingly, the knobs actually do meld together at speed, it's just getting them up to speed, and the heavy feel at the wheel...
If Hutchinson got the size down to a real 2.0, got the weight down to 700 grams these tires would be very good for Michigan (east coast conditions loamy, sandy, etc.). Otherwise, they are freeride only. Two stars for XC, 5 for freeriding.
