Designed to prowl the backcountry, the WeirWolf is the go-to choice for extreme trail riding. Fast rolling center knobs keep pedaling efficient while the razor-like cornering knobs grab the trail (and shake it up like a fuzzy bunny).

Bottom Line:
I am stunned by the amount of glowing reviews these tires have received. Unless I was doing something wrong with the tires, my experience was polar opposite from most of the reviews I have read here. I actually bought this tire based upon these reviews. Here's how it went:
First ride, tire run at about 40 psi.. Two pinch flats with decent traction on the hardpack.
Second ride out, 45 psi... One pinch flat and less than adequate traction on loose over hardpack. I kept spinning the wheel when standing up on the pegs.
Third ride, Small downhill run to begin, puncture flat through the face of the tire, reparied on the trail, did a little more downhilling and I liked the cornering but couldn't seem to keep the tire hooked up on the steep climbs.
Two more rides with similar results and I gave up on this tire.. I just couldn't seem to keep air in it no matter what psi I tried.
I disliked this tire so much that I ended up just giving it away. Perhaps I was doing something wrong, but I don't think so. I have never had this much trouble with ANY other tire I have tried (except for maybe the Panaracer IRC)I wouldn't wish this tire on my worst enemy.

Running race version as a front tire with stans. I wasn't sure how this tire was going to perform, but I'm really satisfied with it. It grips very well in the corners, as well as on rocks and roots, even in the wet it grips very well. Durability seems to be very good too, ridden 3 months, doesn't seem to have worn at all. Very satisfied with the overall performance, good all round tire. Will probably keep it on through the fall season. On a side note, did have it burp out once with stans, but I pumped it back up, and haven't touched it since. Fills up easily.

None yet, still putting miles on them. They are a little loud on the road, but who wants to ride on the road?
I was looking for something lighter than my old Velociraptors; tried the High Rollers and, while very light, we too jittery for a noob like me. I put on the WeirWolfs (Wolves?) and it was a whole new bike.
These tires have become the new yardstick against which I will compare anything I try in the future.

Soft Sticky compound grips very well on pavement and rock, don't wander too much in sand/gravel. Plenty of traction on the climb (I need stronger legs ;) ), and the descents too. They're great when going down canyon roads (pavement) at 45-50 mph. No squirm and feel really tacky, even in the corners. :)
Weaknesses:
Soft compound wears faster than other tires I've used, but cost is reasonable. Noisy on pavement (DUH).
They're a great all around mountain trail tire. These are a great value for the money. If you're looking for a tire for general trail riding, these will get the job done quite well.

I was a Mormon missionary who used these tires in the streets and hills of Oklahoma for most of my 2 year mission. I used these tires for 3 years before that. I replaced one set of these tires with another after I wore them low with about 2000 miles. I was impressed with all these tires held up to. And after all the times Ive switched them out to another rim (and I need a quik stik to pry them off) they are still holding up. Im not sure how long a tire's life is but these seem to have exceptional life. And when coasting down a hill they made a lot of noise but they kept up (and passed) tires with half the tread. These things are amazing. If they make a 24 inch version of this tire (and a little fatter) I would use this tire for my next bike upgrade.

Strengths:
I bought the 2.1 race. It is light weight and rolls fast. Grips well and corners ok upfront. Compared to the Nevegal I normally run up front, it feels more responsive - the Nevegal grips better but feels like a dead animal ziptied to my wheel. I tried it in the back where it replaced a Small Block 8 that doesn't grip on anything loose. Now my bike just motors up hills without any of the skittishness of the Smallblock. I'm a short woman who prefers to finesse and spin and not hammer and grunt, and these tires provide the grip in the back to do so. They also track well on the downhill and don't wander. I will buy them again. 5 stars as a rear, 4 stars as a front.
Weaknesses:
It takes a bit of work to keep them on line in deep sand when up front. Not totally bad, just a bit more wander than I would like. Great though in the back. They fling mud when up front so watch your eyes.
Giant Anthem W, Easton XC-One wheels, XT drivetrain LX shifters, Next SL Carbon bars, Sid Team fork, Thompson Masterpiece seatpost, Bontrager RL unisex saddle, Time Atac Carbons, Stroker Trail brakes w/Alligator TiN rotors. Wolverine 2.2 up front (new haven't ridden yet).
Bottom Line:
Good front tire for XC but watch where it goes in the sand. Great in the back for bite in all dry and damp (not muddy) conditions. I've had these in sand, hardpack, loose over hard, rocky and roots and the worst I can say is that it wanders a little to much in sand up front. I also rode these in damp/wet conditions and they fared no worse than anything else that was not mud specific. They do pack, but shed it quickly (and violently) and have good traction in damp conditions. Not a bad all round tire for anything but gumbo. I have found my all around rear tire.

Bottom Line:
WeirWolf 2.1 RACE - Today was the first oportunity I had to try these tires out in multiple types of terrain: hardpack, loose-over-hardpack, small rocks, medium rocks, sand, and mud. The sand was the only thing that they had problems with, but that could have been due to the width. They tore through mud, didn't slip on loose dirt and rocks, stopped on a dime and gripped the ground like glue when taking turns at speed.
I ordered these online, the 2.3s, but got the 2.1s, company was out of 2.3s so I figured hell with it. I think if these were slighty wider - like I originally wanted - they would be perfect for my needs.
Overall, in my experience, these are great all-around tires that handled everything I dished out. I'll be getting the 2.3s once these wear down.

I did try the Moto Raptors for the really mean rocky terrain and they do great, but if you want a really versatile all around tire Weirwolfs are the best. Cornering is great, traction and durability. If you feel they dance around try lowering the pressure, it makes a tremendous difference. I am 180 pounds and I ride them on 36 front and 40 back. Cheers.

GRIP! The perfect front tire for my SS rig, the 2.1 is still narrow enough to roll fast but keeps its ability to corner. Predictable drift at high-speeds in the dry, loose terrain here around Flag, sticks OK to Sedona's slick rock, durable casing has yet to give me a pinch flat. In wet muddy conditions I am a little nervous in the corners, but unless it is a mud bog these tires will hook up.

Price? It does throw a lot of rocks, and in mud-bog conditions they turn into slicks...

They have done more then great - claiming or downhill.. I've put my Mytos XC recently since the Weirwolfs were getting worn after two years and I pop them in one ride.

Mean looking tread design if anything. Overall 5 chilis from me.

I have been running different tires for about 5 years now. I have to say that I always thought tires slipped out uncontrollably when washing out, and expected to lose traction on climbs. Yes, I had the correct air pressure and never over-inflated my tires. Finally I decided to pay attention to reviews on this site and look for a serious cross country tire. Here's where the Weirwolf comes in. I ran down to my LBS and picked this up along with my new wheelset.
WOW. First ride out I could tell that this was my new favorite tire. Let me note here that this is for the rear. I haven't put one on the front yet.
At speed this tire rolls along quite nicely and I haven't notice it holding me back at all. I never really understood people when they talked about a tire staying under control while washing out. Now I do. This thing just sort of floats out to the side and comes back on track smoothly and predictably. After about 3 months on this tire I have yet to get a flat but I do run tubes with Slime in them.
Climbing...ahhh climbing. This is whee the Weirwolf kicks a*s. I ride a hardtail and had constant slipping on climbs before this tire. Now, it's just amazing. This thing just grips and grips. My riding buddy even noticed on the first ride I had on it. I hear from behind me, "Man, that Weirwolf is hooking up!". My climbing has definitely improved thanks to this tire.
Weakness: Only weekness noticed is on slippery roots and steel pipes(I ride semi-urban trails).
If you ride dry, dusty trails or hardpack, with rocks, this tire is for you. Go get one and you can thank me later. Sickest tire every made.

Bottom Line:
I have used a good amount of tires and I am VERY particular to which one I use. I find that of all things, tires have the most impact on how well my bike feeels given the terrain type. These don't take the tire podium away from Kenda Nevegals, however, for the price $25ea the Weirwolves have very little that can rival them. I find that the perform well in all dry conditions and handle everything from loose rocks, single tracks, and hills with ease. I would give them 5 chilis, but they don't hook-up as well as the Nevegals on slick rock. The do pedal much better though and can reach a good tempo rather quickly for a tire with so much tread. Perhaps the DNA versions are worth 5 chilis overall. I will give them a try and report back on my experience.
Hands down though: If you are looking for a great tire that won't break the bank, you cannot go wrong here.

Oof...I'm amazed at the amount of people who like these tires. I sure don't! A guaranteed spin-out on every steep incline. I have tried every seated/standing position imaginable on the bike to keep these tires hooked up while climbing and they always fail to grip long before I'm done pedaling. You don't need a mountain bike with these tires, you need mountain climbing gear - ropes, crampons, slings - then you'll make it up the hill!
Mud just seemed to turn the tires into huge mud snowballs, with zilch grip.
Roots seem covered with a slick teflon coating while riding on these lame tires too. NO TRACTION!
I read and reread the reviews on this page for these tires and was sure I must be using them wrong. I inflated, over-inflated, under-inflated, changed tubes, changed stems, changed seat positions, and never could hook up with these tires. I even lost weight! I'd use hotdog skins before I'd use these again.
To be fair, I've been told they work great in other parts of the country, but for rocky, rooty New England, they are impossible.

The tires have performed very well for me. Have used them in mostly dry conditions so far, but this weekend came across some muddy sections of the trail that were hidden by leaves. Some of these bogs were about 3" deep, and I go 250 lbs. Not once did these tires fail to get me through these conditions. It got to the point where I was looking for mud to go through, just to test them out! Again, I was extremely happy with their performance and never once did the bike get squirrely on me. I also did not have the problem of them not throwing the mud out as others have indicated.
I will be remounting these tires on disc ready rims soon, and will try reversing the tread on the rear tire as others have suggested. Looking at the tread pattern on these tires, I'm certain they'll shred anything they come upon. I have the 2.1, when I replace, I'll try the 2.5
Excellent tire choice IMHO.

I've never had a tire make such difference to my riding: immediately noticable! Great combo of (relatively) light weight, decent sized knobbies. And I think they roll just fine; in fact, I've never felt faster (at about 40psi). Running the rear in reverse, just as everyone's been saying. Oh, and so far no problems with premature wear. Pretty close to the perfect XC knobby! Will try with Stan's & report back.

Pretty long wear time considering the durometer. These tires run well in wet, muddy, root & rock conditions. Shed mud fairly well.
Weaknesses:
Definately not for dry & hardpack conditions. Tires feel like they drift when cornering at high speeds in dry conditions. These are a fat 2.1 width with big lugged sides- definately slow on hardpack/ gravel.

Bottom Line:
A great tire with a long wear time. Excellent for Northeast US conditions. The Weirwolf hooks up well on roots and rocks, particularly on climbs, and gives confidence in wet conditions. I like to run them at 45 psi- they still give a decent amount of shock absorption & I haven't had a pinch flat yet (d'oh!). I just bought my second set- my first set lasted about 1200 miles.

this is for the DNA foldable 2.1 version.
My objective was to get do-it-all tires for my Bullit which I ride for all types terrain(off and on road). So I was looking for the right balance of light, good traction and low rolling resistance.
For the first 2 weeks, I've used it for about ~120kms on uphill and downhill roads. Which tire pressure of 45 front and 55 back, rolling resistance was not really noticeable.
Finally, I was able to try it going downhill this weekend and the difference with my previous tires where really noticeable. The conditions of the trace ranged from hardpack to loose powdery soil, and boy these tires really hook it up. I had both tires mounted the way the arrow pointed. It used about 30psi front and 35psi at the back and used DH inner tubes to help prevent pinch flats.
I would wait a few more rides before I say I found that do-it-all tire I was looking for. I post again after a few hundred kms. with these tires

Outstanding tire. Up untill using the weirwolf I was convinced that 2.3 Cont Vertical Pros were the best tire out there. I state this so every one knows where I am coming from. Now I use the Cont up front and the Weirwolf 2.1 in the rear ( direction reversed ). The weirwolf hooks up as good as the Cont 2.3, only better in sandy conditions. Over all my corining is more secure and predictable. The wear on the Cont and WTB are about the same, still grippy as hot tar after 3 months. I'm not sure what the last post was all about, maybe the guy got a bad set. I think the key is to run your pressure as low as possible. I weight 172lbs and run the rear tire at 34 psi. I have not tried them as a front tire so can't comment here, and living in Idaho do not have much experience in mud, but for all other conditions the weirwolf is an excellent rear tire.

I DECIDED TO TRY THE WEIRWOLF XC RACE AFTER MY EXPENSIVE MICHELLINS QUICKLY SELF DISTRUCTED. I MOUNTED THE WEIRWOLFS WITH THE ROTATION ARROW POINTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF MY TRAVEL AS WAS RECOMENDED BY OTHER RIDERS. THIS SEEMS TO WORK THE BEST AND TRACTION HAS BEEN SUPERB. seems to be a great tire for the dry, loose rocky conditions out here. had trouble with the durability of the IRCs. I expected to loose a lot of energy to rolling resistance, but have been surprised by how well they roll. it always feels a little soft -- not a problem, but took a little getting used to after the hard-riding IRCs. it may be the slow-rebound rubber and smaller knobs. traction is superlative in soft, loose dirt and sharp, loose rocks. can be had for less on the net or mail order, but i needed something quick to replace the short-lived (<2 mos.) I have used these tires in all conditions and am quite pleased. The DNA Rubber compound hooked me up on wet roots and in reasonable mud. THIS IS NOT A MUD TIRE!! Get over it folks.. It can be ridden in the wet. I tried it in the wet on our red clay trails and it was great.I took it to our local race course the day after a thunderstorm and with the trail being dry in spots to being gooey in others the tires hooked right up with no drift. If you ride a bike with a dropped top tube like mine then you can use all the body English you want.THIS IS NOT A STAY IN THE SADDLE AND JUST TURN YOUR FRONT WHEEL AND GO LEFT OR GO RIGHT TIRE.This tire begs to be leaned hard into a corner. The extra volume helps take the trail chatter out of the bike. I run mine with the stans and have had no air loss. This knocks over a hundred grams off of each wheel from the tubeless tire. I give the nod to the Seracs for rear wheel traction and braking and any races on super fast Carolina hardpack. All else goes to the Howlers.

It's been pretty muddy lately with the rains in Michigan and I have tried the tires backwards, forward, increased pressure, low pressure and the have not been able to clear thick mud until I'm out of the mud in the clear and flying down the trail at some speed enough to clear them. Good overall tire and I will keep them. I can deal with mud, it's kind of fun anyway. Listen I don't know what the other two people who used this tire in mud were doing but I've used this tire since it was released last year. I loved the 2.5's so much for my Downhill rig from the past now that I couldn't wait for the 2.1's and pestered my LBS to get them in! I have used them in every type of terrian imagable and they have never let me down NOT ONCE! If your having mud clearing problems drop the PSI to 35 if your a light enough rider try 32 and these tires WILL eject mud! Maybe some people have some freak super mud where they live but it is not uncommon for Cake Batter style mud here and these tires eat it like it was real cake batter!! If you having traction problems try this for a cure. Reverse you rear tread like the tires sidewall suggests for you rear tire! The only terrian in which the Weirwolf gets a little squirly on is DEEP SAND deep enough to cover the tire an the rim. They drift and wander and don't like to be pushed around in deep dry sand. If the sand is wet they eat it up like anything else but deep dry sand they hate it. I use two tires for soil condition specific riding Dry dusty conditions like mid summer heated dry trails I use the MutanoRaptors 2.14 for everything else I use the Weirwolf 2.1. Almost two seasons on the SAME tire it still has plenty of tread life and it's still kicking A$$! Try playing with your pressure and reversing the rear tread before badmouthing this awesome tire, it's the same tread as the 2.5 that is a MTB review people's choice winner and holds one of the highest ratings for tires on this site!!

BOTTOM LINE: I train on the 2.5 race version, and I race the 2.1s. THESE ARE THE BEST TIRES I'VE RIDDEN/RACED TO DATE! I've used my 2.5s in all conditions, and YES they do cake up with mud (but they're not designed for mud). They hook up in corners better than any other XC tire I've ever ridden (there are better cornering tires amongst the DH/DS offerings, but they're far too heavy for XC). If you want a GREAT tire (better than the Spz'd RollX) for hard-pack or soft (and gravel if you don't mind the debris), these tires are AWESOME! The 2.1's are absolutely THE best XC race tires going for general trail conditions w/o going tubeless. And for you skinny weight-weenies out there, stop crying about tires that are over 300g's. These tires aren't that heavy. You can't have everything....

Surprisingly good in mud also. Rolls Ok on the road for such a grippy beast. Such a sexy tyre print!
Weaknesses:
Too tight-fitting on my Mavics! Why can't manufacturers just get it right???? I wouldn't use this tyre on the back since it's far too directional for my liking (ie grips only in one direction and would be poor in traction if fitted the right way round). EVERTHING! So grippy it's scary! When they mean those sidewall knobs bite in they mean it. It makes you want to lean the bike hard and fast into the corners and when you do it puts a big smile on your face! Climbing or decending this tire is at home with both wether it's in mud or hardpack traction is always easy to find. I have had the same tires for a year now and they are still almost new with riding three to four times a week! The rubber is still very soft but wears very slowly, I have no idea what rubber componds WTB is using but man do these tires last and last. Not too expensive when compared to Maxxis and Hutchinson for price per tire.
Weaknesses:
The only weakness these tires have is that they must be run at the minimum tire pressure of 35 to 38 PSI or the sidewall knobs fold over very easily and the tire drifts. Sidewalls are a little thin and are not recommended for Stans No Tubes system. Other than that they are the perfect all around tires!

As you can see the list of tires I have used is very long and some great ones have been on that list. By far these are the best tires by far I have used since I have started Mountain Biking!I have never lost traction with these tires or had them washed out while using them and there is not a terrian type around that they are not at home at. I only like the Swampthings better for muddy conditions and sloppy trails but there is no reason why you can't use these in that type of conditions as well. Traction is awesome with these tires but I do recomend that you reverse the tread on the rear tire. Use the rotation index for the front and then reverse the direction for the rear and the traction will improve greatly. The only people who have had problems with these tires are the people who have not reversed the rear tire once they do they rave about the traction they get from these tires. The tires are perfect, they climb like a set on 1.9's but decend like a 2.5 downhill tire! They last forever and are an extremly sticky and soft tire how WTB makes them is beyond me their DNA compound is one of the best ans is right up there with Maxxis's Slow Reezay compound, and their Exception and Maxxpro series tires. Just give these a try if you live in an area with changing terrian and are looking for a good wearing tire that climbs well and decends well at not too bad of a price per tire. Thanks WTB what a great tire! PEACE!!

I was loooking for something light weight that grips better than the Panaracer Fire XC Pro. July in San Diego and the trails are dry, rutted, and slippery. The XC Pros were slidding all over the place, even though they had plenty of tread.
I read reviews for the 2.1 on the 2.3 review board and decided to try the 2.1s kevlar. I actually read a review from a guy complaining that the tire was hard to control. He said in rutts it kept wanting to climb up the wall instead of slipping off and staying in the rutts. Geez, a tire that will go where it's pointed! I'll take that problem.
Problem is that nobody had any of the $30 kevlar in stock for months. Them I notice Performance had the Comps in stock for $13! For $13 I'll take the 50g penalty and give them a shot.
Night and Day from the XC Pros (580g, $18 on sale). Grip, Grip, Grip! No more skiddish "I'm going to wash out" feeling. Off-camber cornering held great. Rolls no different than the XC Pros, IMO. Hooks up better climbing and decending (I run both tires in the same direction. I first tried the rear tire in the opposite direction but noticed traction was the same both directions, however it held better cornering rotating in the same direction as the front).
At $13 I havn't even bothered to try the $30 kevlar. How much better can they be?
