A deep-tread bad-boy, the Timberwolf will maul the mountain. The tall center tread provides strong braking power and maximum traction while the massive cornering knobs tear into the soil for taming rough conditions.

Heavy but it´s actuaclly a plus if you´re not a racer. Bit of a pain in the butt when you are about to put the last bit of tire in the rim, but a great tire lever like Pedro´s does the job. Center knobs starting to wear out. But I think that is normal.

I found that these actually grip better when you pump them up to 35PSI (prolly stiffens those wobbly side knobs a bit), so I get the best of both worlds for XC: efficiency and superb grip in all conditions: wet mud, rolly babyhead uphills, hardpack. Great control on loose sideslopes, slickrock, and rolls right over deep sand. Seems to have great puncture resistance. Fast on the well maintained trails.
Weaknesses:
So big I had to to minor truing to the wheel to not rub the front derailluer. Barely fits my frame, they run big for 2.5". Throws lots of little rocks. At 35PSI, of course, the ride can be rough. Alarming noises on sharp rock (but no damage yet).

The best tire I have ever used in 30 years. If you like going long distances on trails that are barely still there (or even gone) then this is your tire. Pump it up to 35 and cruise up sandy washes or hug the rocks on steep sideslopes. Throw mud in the air. Go places without getting exhausted. Don't buy this tire if you think it may not clear your frame, it is BIG.

Increadable cornering ability and un-imagenable grip!! Even if you try to break the grip on these tires, you will find it hard to. Good rolling resistance on Fire roads and XC trails, like the ones found on Long Island if you have the psi at about 35. Even better on dedicated downhills. You will feel confident in the sharp corners. High speed drifts are solid with the incredible grip. My favorite thing about these tires is there awsome traction in deep sand and snow! I left dirtbikers in the dust at our local sand pit, incredeable!!!!!!!

Tire casing is strong and resistant to punctures.

Side knobs are too long and too flexible, also the knobs are not in a symmetrical line which gives the tire a feeling of wandering around even in soft stuff or on pavement. Center knobs on rear tire are wearing really fast also.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
For SoCal, these are not very good tires, they lose grip in the rocks especially on side-slope conditions due to long and flexy side-knobs. On straight ahead climbs thru rocks they will just spin out. As someone else noted these tires also fling smaller rocks with great efficiency. The best place I found these tires to work is in deep sand where the soft knobs don't work so much against you. Haven't had them in mud yet and they'll be off the bike before we get rain.

This tire is outstanding for what it is, a huge, meaty tire. As such, it rolls slow, and is on the heavy side. Not really anything that could be avoided while keeping the benefits, but on fire roads it makes things seem longer.
The grip is amazing. I've found it to excell in all circumstances, from nasty slop to loose sand to jagged rocks and roots. It corners better than I do, especially in loose and chunky conditions. The braking is superb, as advertised. Durability has been good, I've actually yet to get a flat. There have been countless times when one of the side knobs has exploded off a root or rock with a loud FAP, and it took me a month to stop checking for damage. Wear is certainly evident after five months of hard and varied use, but has been more than satisfactory.

They really dont clear mud well at all and let go into sideways drifts when cornering at speeds on muddy surfaces in a way that the conti's didnt. I have found them to be confidence inspiring in the dry though on everything from hard pack, to lose gravel, rocks, on wood and on street sufaces. They also feel good when landing, just not landing into a corner in the wet. If you ride in muddy or wet conditions regularly I would look elswhere, otherwise not a bad tire.

Great for winter riding. Digs deep, but still rolls fast on hard pack. Eats rock gardens for lunch. 2.3s are quite possibly wider (on mavic 517s) than Motoraptor 2.4s. 2.5s fit great on the zoke. 2.3 barely fits the superlight - I had to true my wheel to make it fit. No biggie. Great for climbing despite the weight - real good digger. Kick ass for (my new all favorie term) "all mountain."

Uhhh it's first strength is that it's strong! Best motha freaking front tire on Earth. Fits my Marzocchi MX comp. Ability to run VERY low air pressure. I can run as low as 15 psi. Extremely sticky rubber. Wet roots seem like dry roots with this tire up front. Nice and heavy. Sorry, light front tires suck for rough riding. Rolling resistance not that bad. Corners like it's on a rollercoaster rail Doesn't slow down in the wet Corners well in hard pack too Does everything well! Looks really cool! Probably only needs one inner tube for the life of it.
Weaknesses:
I hope it only needs one inner tube, because it's a biotch to get onto the rim. I don't even want to think about getting it off! It's good that it fits tight though. You can run low PSI without worrying about the tire slipping on the rim and busting open the stem valve.

You won't find a better tire for the front wheel. Especially for the price. The nokians are close to $60 a piece and don't perform as well as a front tire IMO. I agree with others in that the Team DH version wouldn't make a good rear tire. Nokian makes better rear tires.

Everything. This is how a tire should be. I'm a fast 6'4" 215lb rider so when I lean it over, brake hard into a corner, or climb up a face I need a tire that sticks and this tire delivers. This is the new freeride standard tire by which all others will be judged. New for 2005 it is also available in 2.3" and 2.8" so now only the 2.1 XC weenies can complain! If this tire loses its stick it is rider error... all you riders that like to blame your trail yardsales on your equipment (you know who you are) better not buy these tires because you have no excuses with these bad dog tires.
Weaknesses:
NONE! Used to be that you could only get the 2.5" but now with a 2.3" and 2.8" the offering is complete. Of course that assumes that WTB didn't screw something up when they scaled the tire up and down. The non-race version of this tire is too heavy but I don't ride that tire so I don't care.

These are my Mammoth Mountain front tires. I expected lots of traction in the loose conditions at Mammoth and that is what I got. Unfortunately, Skid Marks and other top of the mountain trails were closed on openning weekend, so I will have to post another review when I get a chance to ride them in the really nasty stuff.
Gobs of braking traction and cornering traction. The knobs are large and tall and seem like they might squirm (maybe on hardpack), but they dig in on the loose stuff and give you traction.
A very wide tire (2.250" sidewall to sidewall), with very tall knobs and even taller side knobs. Knob-to-knob width was over 2.6" measured with my caliper, so these could actually be rated a 2.6 tire and not a 2.5.
All those knobs add up, though, and this "race" version weighs in at 988 gms. Slightly heavier than my Panaracer 2.4 FR tires at 960 gms. There is no free lunch!
But heh, we're talking Mammoth, and the only real climbing is to the grill for a drink and a burger!
Highly recommended.

As stated in the first review this tire did great in NM mid winter conditions. It has since spent some time in the front range, Fruita, moab, and dry spring conditions. It is fantastic on every surface I've ridden including slickrock! More importantly though, it is by far the best tire I've used to date in loose conditions and is out of this world here in the loose, dry, gravely soil of northern NM. It just always seems to find traction. Now if only they will make it in a 2.3....

I wish they were cheaper, but I would buy them again for $50 bucks each.
Similar Products Used:
Panaracer Smoke, Fire, Maxxis Wetscream
Bike Setup:
Jamis Dakar Team with as little Shimano as possible.
Bottom Line:
Get these tires. I would say who should and who shouldn't, but I can't think of a situation in which they wouldn't be great.

Strengths:
FANTASTIC all condition large volume tire
Weaknesses:
none YET

Bike Setup:
Norco Fluid, timberwolf front, kenetic 2.35 rear
Bottom Line:
this is my "first impression" review after a few solid rides on the tire. First off, looks like just another square blocked dh tire until you look at the side knobs. they are HUGE!!! and well reinforced to boot. Thus far this tire has seen mud, snow, mud over frozen ground, sand, rock, pavement, basically a little of everything. It really seems to hook up well in all conditions, even mud over frost. there were a few instances where I thought I was going to wash were I suddenly felt the knobs grab hold. so far so good! oh, did I mention it even sheds clay mud well? the real test will be performance on a predominatly rock substrate. If it hooks up well and doesnt feel to squishy it will become the tire of choice for the longtravel bike for years to come.... stay tuned, I'll update in a couple of months.....

Strengths:
Grip is awesome regardless of terrain, great in the gloop. Rubber seems soft enough to grip wet roots and rocks but doesn't wear down too quickly.
Weaknesses:
None, weight if you are a gram shaver.
Similar Products Used:
Michelin, Maxxis, Nokian.
Bike Setup:
03 Stinky built up as heavy as possible.
Bottom Line:
Great tyre for all conditions and really shines in deep mud when others are losing traction. Haven't really tried it in the dry yet as it is a typical British winter (rains all the time). You can bank this tyre really low and it still holds!!!
