Bottom Line:
These tires are great. I WOULD be using the Fires on the rear, but they won't fit. The DHs fit snugly, but don't rub the stays.
What I like best about these tires is that they are so cushy. They seem to be made of a rubber that is softer than most, yet they wear fairly well. I also use them for commuting *gasp!*, so they get a lot of mileage. When you can find them for $20 or less, they are a supreme deal.
My thinking from the get-go was, yeah, they're heavy. But maybe I'll run these until I race (ha!) or go on a ride where I'll be struggling to keep up, and THEN I'll put on a lighter weight shoe. But either that occasion has never arisen, or I just like them too much to change (or I'm just too damn lazy to put something else on).
I'm riding all sorts of terrain. Rocky gardens to soft, pine-cushioned trails. They hook up everywhere.
I'm hoping that Tioga keeps making these. If not, I need to stock up. Keep me posted, Tioga. :^P

nice, thick sidewalls.....2.3 sits like a 2.6 on my rims.....Can last forever, depending on how you use them.
Weaknesses:
The only time this tire works extremely well is in medium to dry conditions when its being used as a rear tire on a hardtail. I know this isnt saying much for the tire, but This is usually the conditions i rode in, so it worked great most of the time.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Started with an oryx dd66 hardtail where it served very well as a back tire, then moved onto a Balfa bb7, where it doesnt seem to like to grip very well....weird.....
Bottom Line:
I think that any rider that needs a cheap tire should look for this one, as it'll last a good while, and once it goes bald, like mine eventually did, you can use it as an urban or street tire! This tire performed unusually well while running at low pressure on my hardtail, and served as asweet street tire after balding when run at a high pressure. NEVER RUN THIS TIRE WITH A NARROW RIM!!! you should always run it with an alex dx32 or doublewide or similar to get the full effect of a good-gripping, well rounded tire! Narrow rims cut down on the ability to run at low pressures and suck for bigger hits when the landing gets gnarly. Everybody, enjoy your tires. See you on the trails!

Ride these tires and your gonna be the one going down the hill - WITHOUT YOUR BIKE!!!! Ride em until u get enough cash to replace them. The only good thing about these tires is that there not that heavy and they were easy to put on the rim. Other than that if ur going away on a trip or something i wouldn't advise taking these tires. The sidewalls are ready to rip. Go with some Maxxis Mobsters or Mofo's or some Michelin Wildgrippers or even a set of Panaracer Fire XC's or the 2.3 DH versions. Their kind of heavy but their durable and work well in hell of a lot more situations than the Tioga's.

First off this review is for the 2.3 Kevlar DH tire. I ride mostly desert terrain and loose rock trails. I am not a urban rider. This tire seems to be very good under these conditions. Floats well in medium depth sand and rides well in dry river/creek bottoms. Climbs well at slow speed and brakes consistently on poof powder. Only one flat in 300 miles and that was caused by a very sharp cactus.
Weaknesses:
To dam heavy for XC. Side walls are very tough to get on and off the rim. Breaks loose in high speed turns but will lock in if you have the nerve to ride it out.
Bike Setup:
Rocky Mountain Slayer, Sun SUV rims and Sram Rockets.
Bottom Line:
I am a heavy rider. These tires are doing fine. Wear seems to be a bit fast but that is probably caused by the soft compound. I like them but will probably try another 2.3 - 2.4 wide lighter tire.

Weaknesses:
Kind of heavy but I knew that before I bought. Don't think it's avoidable for this type/size of tire.
I bought these for a tire with great traction; sticky for rocks/scree and tree roots, and large economy size for float in sand/loose stuff. They are the 60mm by 56mm (2.3)Tioga Factory Downhill F in the Kevlar. I run the big front knob on front and rear. They look just like the picture above, I think I bought the "soft compound" tire, not concerned too much about wear or weight although they are the Kevlar bead and I think they were advertised at 800-900 grams. They do just what I wanted for XC gnarly stuff. Don't know about fast downhill use (which is what they are designed for - duh!! Tioga Factory Downhill is printed on them.) I can make some steeper, more technical climbs over rough, loose, roots, etc (granny gear) that I couldn't get through before. Also, at least at slower speeds, the front will bite/float enough to get me through really loose, steep sidehill scree/sharp turns that I couldn't make with the PirannaPro or Kenda 2.1, although they are good tires but more of a smaller, faster, all around design. Would buy this Tioga again if still available with the soft compound for the "special" XC application -but for the low amount of use I give this set, they're going to last quite a while. I don't even think about running them on pavement; believe pavement would powder them off in short order. I weigh about 180 and run 35-40 lbs air in them. Haven't had a problem with flats. When not out riding, the tires and wheels are kept indoors and the tires still look like new (no drying out and cracking). Now if they could just make the tire with a weight similar to the 595g Mutano Raptor 2.4, the Mutanos wouldn't see a lot of use although it seems to be an easier rolling tire. Would highly recommend this tire for specific XC terrain but not all around riding. Price was good too. So the big knobs and Fat 66 casing, for this specific application, earns a big 5 and 5 flamers.

Reaffirmed my affection for this tire (front only) last night. I was faster and in more control than when riding the Michelin DH tire in the front. (Michelin still rocks in the back). Mobster is still the best front tire I've used but the price on the Tioga is awsome.

i run 20 lbs. front and rear with superlight tubes. no flats yet. these are a lot more stable at this pressure than lightweight tires with floppy sidewalls. what's the point of big tires if ya don't run low pressures. lots of shock absorbtion and traction. great for typical new england rocks. crawls up and over all sorts of stuff.work great for cross country as long as its at least somewhat technical. not the best road tires. sounds like a hummer. learn to ride with the tire. not against it. let off the brakes in the rough stuff and let the bike float thru.these tires stop great so you can brakereally late and hard.momentum is the key. oh yeah, i like the tires.i'm only giving them a four because i want it all. big, strong , light AND cheap

2.3 - Excellent stability on moderately rocky downhills. Excellent pinch flat protection. Good traction and decent cornering. Great Urban tire. Takes drops well = Less trips to your LBS for wheel truing. Decent price =$20.00 2.1 - Good aggressive x-country rear tire. Lots of traction for climbing. Rolls faster than 2.3. Decent Price =$20.00
Weaknesses:
2.3 - Knobs wear down fast. Lasted only about a year. Rolls a little slow -powdering the inside of the tire helps. 2.1 - Wear fast. Not as good taking drops if you're heavy.
One of the best deals out there for a quality freeride tire. The only problem is the wear factor. Still, I think it's worth it. I would definitely consider buying the 2.3 version again, it suits my freeriding style well. Good luck...

Strengths:
Very controlable at the limit. Gives good feedback to the handlebars, and has good overall grip. Fun to ride fast!
Weaknesses:
Does not bite too well in the dust. Too heavy, and yes I care! At 40 psi these tires rubbed my frame, and at 35 they forced me to keep my rims true (which is a good thing). Also, whenever your bike get's stolen, they take your tires too!
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Rigid steelbike. (Try a rigid bike and rediscover steeringfeel!)
Bottom Line:
I've been mountain biking these tires in California, Norway and Venezuela, and for serious off-roading, and I love the extra feedback these wide tyres give. Off cause these are downhilltyres, so they are a bit heavy for singletracks, but maybe not heavy enaff for DH, 'cause I've had several punctures (weighing 150lbs/68kg running 35 psi) If you love to go fast throug tight corners, and axept a weight penalty for the extra grip and control, these tyres are for you, but if you just like to have a workout on some gravel roads, forget about them! They need to be taken to the limit of its grip to shine, and if you are just out to shed som sweat, they are a total waist (or maybe not, you will sweat a lot more!) However, I can't wait to try the much lighter but equally wide Continental Survival Pro 2.3.

These are very lightweight for DH tires, which I think actually worse rather than better. The casings are very weak. The biggest problem is that they do not grip well in any conditions I tried them in. The compound seems to soft too, strong brakes combined with hard conditions tore them apart. Weaknesses:
They are heavy 1200g but if you have these on you do freeride and downhill. Not Xross country where a 1.7 to 1.95 400g tire or so is needed. Or yer a lightweight 150lbs and cant handle a heavier tire
