The Surly Knard’s block tread pattern has been carefully researched, designed, and tested. The profile is shaped just slightly edgy to maximize traction on corners while keeping rolling resistance low on straightaways. The closely ...
Strengths: 27tpi version gives great bang for the buck and has a fair bit of rubber on the sidewalls for durability. Absolutely eats loose, rocky trail conditions but is still fast rolling.
Weaknesses: 27tpi is noticablly heavier but half the price of the lighter-weight versions. Tread could pack with mud in the right conditions.
I've been on my Pugsley since model year one and I'm thrilled with all the new fatbike stuff coming down the pike. I use my Pugs as my Mountain Tandem Simulator in the spring and summer because of similar traction and handling. The trails I train on when they're damp are fast and tacky, when they're dry and the motocross guys have been chewing them up can best be described as Legos over Hardpack; lots of loose, sharp rocks. By the end of the season last year the sidewalls on my Larry's looked downright fuzzy from scrapes. The Knards are impressive, no wonder they ended up on Krampus, as a do-it-all tread and the 27tpi versions save some cash and have a fair bit of rubber on the sidewalls. The cheaper tire is noticeably heavier and did add about a pound to my bike. They are square-ish in shape and do have some of that old Endomorph feel but it does help in climbing traction in loose conditions compared to my Larrys. I haven't tried them on slickrock to see if they autosteer like the Morphs. A great all around tire and the 27tpis are a value if you ride in the sharp stuff. Nice Job Surly!
I recently pulled the shifty bits and drop bar off of #5 and bombed around SS for a little bit......and it was awesome. But I found that there is realistically not enough clearance for the big rubber with the dropouts at anything other than full swing. When really cranking on it I could get the tir ... Read More »
I'd like to use a Maxxis Ardent 29x2.4 tire on a Schlick Northpaw rim, and was wondering whether anyone has that width measurement, that of the same tire on a Rabbit Hole, or could point me to a place that might have that information.
Meanwhile, obligatory photo:

Was having a great ride at City Park in Austin, first time there with the Krampus, and pinched trying to hop up onto a super tall (and apparently super sharp-edged) limestone ledge. Orange Seal wouldn't seal. Added Stan's - no seal. Put in a tube and then a mile later man ... Read More »
I got a Mukluk last fall and was blown away at how fun and versatile it was. I was so impressed I sold my FS29 and started scheming the ultimate summer build for my Mukluk: 29+ and a Lefty
The back half of the project is fantastic. The West Hill Shop in Putney VT s ... Read More »
Just wondering if anybody has ran or knows if a 29x3 Knard on a RH wheel will fit in a carbon Niner fork?
I found at least 1 guy that was running the Knard in a Niner fork, but it was on a P-35 wheel.
Any pictures would be great of the set up.
I'm just tossing ideas around for my next wheel se ... Read More »
