Date Reviewed: May 29, 2001
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $25.00
Purchased At:Wiggle.co.uk
Strengths:Team Edition, using for both FR and RR
Light weight, Low rolling resistance, grip in the dry
Weaknesses:none discovered so far
Similar Products Used:IRC Mythos XC,
Bike Setup:Specialized FSR Pro, Sid XC forks, Sid shock
Bottom Line:Certainly buy them again. They've made a huge difference to the rolling resistance across hard pack and grass trails. They are very fast and work well as a compromise on roads.

Date Reviewed: December 17, 2000
Favorite Trail:lots
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:Cycle Surgery, London, UK
Strengths:Some of the best tyres I've used of any design. Strong, light, good puncture resistance, low rolling resistance. Really great for urban use. Leave them on all the time in the Summer - good for hardpacked trails - no need to swap around tyres.
Weaknesses:A bit 'white knuckle' on the corners of dusty trails - the feel is completely different to a knobbly mud tyre - takes some getting used to. Slightly more puncture prone. Rear has near zero grip in sandy, very loose conditions.
Similar Products Used:Michelin Wilgripper
Bike Setup:Trek URT full sus Y-bike. Z2 front and Fox Float RC rear shocks. Race Face Next LP crankset, Hope XC hubs with Mavic X618 rims. Everything else - XTR.
Bottom Line:Great tyres for hard, dry tracks and urban use / commuting when you don't want to fit skinny road tyres on a MTB. Very, very fast. Avoid use in very muddy conditions - you spend most of your time on the floor cursing!

Date Reviewed: October 27, 2000
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $10.00
Purchased At:Nashbar
Strengths:Excellent rolling resistance, perfect tire for hard-pack and around town urban assults.
Weaknesses:Soft pack riding, though these tires aren't made for that purpose. Nashbar ran out of these tires at 10 bucks a pop, but not before I bought 6 sets.
Similar Products Used:City Slickers, Ritchie, WTB
Bike Setup:Modified Gary Fisher
Bottom Line:After riding 5600+ miles (XCing & Urban Assults) this year, I can definately say that the Specialized Mt Baldy tires truely rock.........
These tires are wicked fast (had the MTB up to 38mph on the flats) due to low rolling resistance and using higher pressures than most ATB tires (60-80psi), an other selling point, they typically last about 2000 miles if you rotate them front to back at about 1000 miles.
These tires I would recommend to anyone riding on hard-pack and or just using their MTB for urban assult fitness.

Date Reviewed: September 14, 2000
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:bike shop
Strengths:well made
Weaknesses:none, if used in the right conditions.
Similar Products Used:WTB,IRC
Bike Setup:F/S DBR V-LINK, XTR, ect.
Bottom Line:not for loose conditions or wet, but if you ride hardpack x/c you will fly! also good for urban assault. If you are going to use these instead of nobbies be carefull! More speed less control, know when to use them and you will be faster. retail price is to high.

Favorite Trail:Dwallingup
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:-aesthetically catching
-cranks on the hard and smooth
-low friction, ideal for urban assaults
-street credibility
Weaknesses:-don't corner too hard on these babies if you are clipped in, as the teeth on the outside edges give it that 'slippery' feel.
-if you're thinking of using this for soft ground, expect to make out with the ground.
-expensive
Similar Products Used:Specialized Fatboy, Michelin WildGripper Comp
Bike Setup:Avanti Agressor y2k, LX/XT Comps, Manitou SX shock. All hardtail
Bottom Line:If you're wanting to do any serious off-roading, with multiple type of terrain, then you're seriously going to have to get yourself another set of knobblies.

However, for the urban fanging, this baby absolutely rocks! This hard composite kevlar will withstand a lot of serious punishment, and is the strongest tyre I've ever come across. So for any self respecting couriers out there, then this is the tyre for you!

The price, well, the way I see it is that, if you are really into your bike, and is looking for a tyre for the hard stuff, then the MT Baldy's are for you!

Date Reviewed: January 8, 2000
Duration Product Used:
6 months
Strengths:
Super light, low rolling resistance, nice looking tire
Weaknesses:
expensive.
Bike Setup:
GF HKEK yadda yadda
Bottom Line:Great tires, they are light, durable, and do what semi slicks are supposed to. They work well in hard pack and are ok when the ground is a little wet. Forget it in the mud.

Favorite Trail:
mt. ord
Duration Product Used:
1 Year
Strengths:
light (LBS scale shows 518 g for team edition), low rolling resistance
Weaknesses:
none found yet
Similar Products Used:
dirt control, mythos xc, piranha pro, dirt baldy
Bike Setup:
ybb, jett xc
Bottom Line:the same as the review i gave the dirt control. when used as recommended, it rocks. hi-quality casing (127 tpi) was held-up against some nasty surface cuts caused by sharp rocks. getting about 600-800 miles out of these depending on amount of road travel. as the box says, don't used in wet conditions...perfect for az, colorado, utah and calif.

Submitted by David Klassen a Weekend Warrior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Date Reviewed: July 1, 1999
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
Super smooth on hard pack and road
Killer yellow stripe
Weaknesses:
Stay away from the muddy stuff if you want to stay upright
Bike Setup:
Gary Fisher Paragon
Bottom Line:I had the LBS switch the stock WTB VelociRaptors from my GF Paragon and put these babies on. They have a shaved down tread on the center line and more standard knobby tread on the inside and outside. Most of my riding is to and from work on asphalt and on medium to hard packed trails. Super nice ride on the hard stuff, the minimal center tread rolls very smoothly. At speed you still get that knobby tread noise, but the tire feels alot more stable that a more standard treaded tire. The knobbies on the outside of the tire don't really come into play unless you are cornering hard or sunk in the mud. I've been off-road with them, and as long as you stick to the medium to hard stuff, they work just great. Not great grip in the soft/wet stuff though, so if most of your riding is in the bog, you don't want these.
Oh yeah, the yellow stripe is killer with the GF red/yellow team colours on the Paragon. It really brings out the yellow on the Bontrager Race rims too. 5 jalapenos.
