    Strengths:    Excellent Grip on icy roads.

    Weaknesses:    None really.

    Bottom Line:   
    I'd recommend these tires for commuting in winter. Black ice got me once before. But after riding these tires in icy conditions I found that they self corrected very nicely on icy bridges/road sections. Way better tire than simple off-road nobbies for winter commuting.

    Very stable tire, braking was easy, no lost studs (yet ;))

    Strengths:    Good traction on hard packed snow and ice. They are great for roads and plowed paths with some snow and ice.

    So far they seem durable and the ride is relatively comfortable. They recommend low pressure 35-45psi and they get excellent grip as you go lower in the pressure range.

    I got these new off of craigslist for $60 for the pair and after using them I'd say they are worth the retail price. If you want to winter commute these are a great tire.


    Weaknesses:    Not great in loose snow. Not high enough knobs or an open enough tread pattern to be good in loose snow.

    They are loud on dry pavement, but that is the nature of metal on a dry road. They are also slow. I don't really see these last two things as weaknesses, more just facts.


    Bottom Line:   
    Good tires, I'd buy them at retail prices if I had to do it again. These are great for knocking around town. They are a little slow, but that's the nature of riding on snow and ice. The studs add a lot of security for streets that aren't always perfectly plowed and they have enough tread that they are passable on

    Strengths:    After 5 years of hard commuting on Toronto slushy, salty, "mostly" cleared streets, I have yet to lose grip. On extremely cold days, when the ice is nice and hardThese are the best for commuting and light ice/hard snow packed trails.

    Weaknesses:    Absolutely none.

    Bottom Line:   
    I cannot believe that I have yet to lose a single stud!!! These things are made rock solid. They're starting to show some cracking, which is to be expected given the age and salt abuse. I ride through un-ploughed, hard packed snow paths through parks, for fun. I cannot recommend these enough.

    Strengths:    Great on Black Ice, Polished Glaze ice and moderate packable snow. Thier intended usage range (Offroad Riding,Unloaded). Well Built. The colder it is the better they perform. I love thier width 26 X 1.95!! (They run narrow) Who needs wide tires unless your riding off road and need floatation/ weight disperstion. I did find they ride like a diffrent, better tire under similar conditions on single track on my commute

    Weaknesses:    They are designed to be a rugged low pressure tire. Thus any application that involves any aspect of the oppisitte they are miserable. Iffy on slushy snow. I found them to not work at all with tuffy strips, just this season alone 10 pinch flats, tried pressure from min. to max.45 also to 55 lbs. As temps go up performance drops big time!!

    I feel like a sap after reading the other reviews!! But sorry, this was my exprience. I think enviroment plays alot into the reviews. Our winters range from mid 40s to -15. We haven't had snow stick around all winter for about 10 years, but we do get it to sit for about 1-2 weeks at a time (Think cycles). ICE is ever present as you would expect living in a river valley. The design makes for problematic ride they run narrow but are designed for low pressure?? Imagine running your Road bike tires @ 5lbs below thier min. same ride. Bottom line read ALL the reviews and ask yourself what kind rider are you? where do you live? What kind of winters do you have? Nuff Said- Ride-ON

    Strengths:    Durability

    Bottom Line:   
    In another month it'll be 8 seasons (~12,000km) of city/suburban riding on this pair of tires. See my review dated October 2002. The sidewalls are still 100%. The studs are ~70% of the original length. The tread is cut-up and a bit ragged, but ~90% of original depth. One particularily nasty cut, coupled with my habit of over-inflating them (to 60PSI) during "bare roads" times, resulted in a tread bulge last year. I patched it from the inside with a "boot", I don't over-inflate it anymore, and it's been fine. I still over-inflate the other one. The very tough tread, along with Mr Tuffy's tire liners, has resulted in a total of one puncture during the 8 years / 12,000km. Winter is the time of year that you don't want to have to fix a flat tire, especially in Winnipeg where minus 24C is an average January morning.

    Strengths:    works great on hard pack snow roads and cross country ski trails. Never a problem on black ice or riding on a lake. Not a good choice for deep snow.

    Weaknesses:    NONE excellent product

    Bottom Line:   
    I have used the tires for 2 winter seasons and very happy with the product. If you ride a mix of road and trail this model is perfect, you do not need the more $ tires unless you race or just ride off road in deep snow. I have not seen any wear on the tires in 2 years and 600 miles of winter riding. WORTH EVERY $ TO KEEP YOU SAFE!! again not a good choice for deep snow.

    Strengths:    Great commuting tire. First season, no visibile stud wear! Fine choice when travelling over a mix of bare pavement, snow, occasional ice storms or patches of ice (esp the freeze-thaw in spring).

    Weaknesses:    Heavier then non-studded tires, probably in the ballpark amongst other studded tires. Mine is a bit tricky to mount, could be the rim causing the problem.

    Bottom Line:   
    If you ride in the winter, I strongly recommend one at least as your front tire. You can recover from rear-tire skids, but front...unlikely. They really work; sure they might seem pricey, but if they save you from a single fall in traffic they justify any price.

    4 overall because they are more or less intended towards commuters, IMO. Something like the nokian extreme would be more suitable for someone who spent more time off-road vs on-road. This isn't really fair, because all tires involve tradeoffs, but still something to consider.

    Strengths:    I have the M&G W160 1.9". It is excellent on hard-pack snow and very good on ice. Construction is VG, and the studs are very vey hard. The subscribers on the Icebike e-mail list at www.icebike.com have raved about Nokian products' performance and durability for years.

    Weaknesses:    For deeper snow, they are too narrow and the tread pattern is not really agressive enough.

    Bottom Line:   
    The best tire for winter transportation on snow-packed or icy roads. The Nokian Extreme is a better tire for winter trail riding on ice and deep snow.
