Date Reviewed: May 10, 2004
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $40.00
Strengths:Light, kevlar bead, foldable semi-slick with 127 tpi casing rolls super fast.
Weaknesses:127 tpi casing is too fragile
Similar Products Used:Bontrager Revolt SS
Bike Setup:Custom built, Mavic 517 with Shimano LX hubs.
Bottom Line:They roll great, but after going on hardpack with a slow tube leak which resulted in riding a flat for about 10 seconds, the inside casing got all cut up in between the edge knobs (around the WHOLE tire, not just in some places) all the way through the casing so that you could see the inside of the tread. WAY TOO FRAGILE for everyday use, plus considering how much they cost, never again!

Favorite Trail:The Ridgeway
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $24.00
Purchased At:Can't remember
Strengths:Rolls very fast, ride comfort, noise (lack of)and value
Weaknesses:Weak sidewalls
Similar Products Used:Panaracer XC Pro, WTB V/raptors, Tioga XC
Bike Setup:Sugar 1 with 3 bits
Bottom Line:When the sun comes out these go on, the speed and acceleration they give off is superb, the handling and comfort is good, even when it starts getting slightly muddy.

Durability is also great, mine have lasted well over 3 years and they still look hardly used.

On the down side they are puncture prone thanks to rather weak sidewalls etc, when the weather and trail take a turn for the worse they have to come off.

The bottom line is; they are very good for what they're designed for; fast dry riding, if the tyre was more resitant to punctures it would have got a 5 for overall rating.

Weaknesses:Price.
Similar Products Used:IRC Mythos XC, Panaracer Dart, Trail-Blaster, Bontrager Revolt SS
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Big Sur with the Michelin Sprint on the back.
Bottom Line:Knobby tires are over-rated, actually I think there is a lot of cyclists out there who are using knobby tires just because they think that is what's needed. When I bought my bike they came with IRC Mythos XC and when I was on the trail which has a lot of off camber sections I found the Mythos were always slidding down the hill but when I put the Sprints on this problem went away and they stuck like glue. I've ridden in 7 races this summer and this is an excellent tire for the back wheel if you're looking for some extra speed. With a semi-slick like this you will lose some braking power but that's the trade off you get for less tread (but more speed). As far as for the front tire get something with a bit more tread so that it will dig as you're going through corners. 3 flaming chilis because these tires were originally 70 Canadian but I got them for 40 because it was last in stock.

Bottom Line:I totally disagree with the reviewer below. These tires work great for everything. The are a little slippery on downhill braking, but come on they are a semi. I ride them almost every day and our spring has sucked a** (super wet). Lots of roots and sandy spots. They always work - period. Having little tred in the middle is great for mud and they somehow stick on the steepest of uphills. The knobs on the side are big enough that they hook up in fast cornering. Bottom line - don't blame your tires for pilot error!!!

Price Paid: $60.00
Strengths:Very fast, very light, cool green that generates comments from everyone. This is a great you need an efficient tire that does not hum when riding on pavement.
Weaknesses:Not very durable, will crack down the middle in spots (patches), definitely not oriented for true offroad riding, slips on roots, slips when wet. Dangerous as a rear tire when stopping on wet surfaces. Inconsistant cornering when put up front.
Similar Products Used:Lots of other tires. Mainly kevlar tires. Grey tires.
Bike Setup:near 25.0 lbs setup. with light fork, + frame. race experienced bike.
Bottom Line:This tire is a very good tire that I've ridden for nearly four years. It has many ups and many downs. I liked having it up front because it does not have much for traction. It is smooth on trails, but not an aggressive tire, and does not bite (grip) the soil like a knobby. For cornering, it does a good job, but too sharp a corner will result in fall. This tire is scary when the ground is wet. Jesus. It slips all over the place like as if it were a skate and like a skate blade. Basically, this tire is good for an occasional trail rider (weekend) who takes it easy on the trail. It is not aggressive enough to corner well. And it is VERY hard to stop at speed if it is in the back.
If you have a light bike from Heaven, then you will love this tire 'cause it is Light, and will keep your bike light. Don't buy it if you want an agressive go-anywhere- fast person. My final note- tree roots are a menace for this tire. It will slip on wet and even moist one. Buy this tire, and you will learn to keep your balance really quick. But all in all we don't ride trails everyday. This is a very good tire to ride around in because low rolling resistance= fast riding.

Bottom Line:I ordered a set of these tires and some Mavic 517's specifically for city riding/cardio-training. I would not recommend them for serious x-country riding. I have another set of Mavic 521's with WTB v-raptors for that. That way I can just change rims without having to remove tires. First thing I notice on the Sprints was that I could go alot faster/farther with them. The low resistence on the hard dirt and asphalt is great, though they don't brake like champs (which is what I expected being a tire that is semi-slick). I am impressed with so far.

Strengths:-Sticky tires from dry and dusty to moist and tacky
-What they don't have in knobs they make up in sheer contact patch
-Rails around corners, good on off-camber trails
-Front braking is suprisingly good
-Climbing(no loose stuff or roots)
-Color
-Stays clean in the mud
Weaknesses:-Weight
-Dry or (especially)wet roots
-Sand and loose rocks
-Rear tire always brakes loose when braking
-Mud

Bottom Line:These are awesome tires. They cost to much retail but if you can find them for cheap they are a great tire. First semi-slick I have ridden and I can ride this tire like it is a full knobby with few exceptions(see weaknesses). And Michelin Green goes oh so well with my White bike, very cool color. At retail I rate this tire low for value but for what I got them for I would give them 5 chili's but otherwise on 2.

Strengths:-super grippy
-good technical tire
-realy fast
-corners very agressively
-realy good performance when it's wet and not sticky, not soupy though
Weaknesses:-they suck in muck, and stickier mud
-if you skid or slide down too many rock faces they bald fast

Bike Setup:99 kona king kihuna, with all xtr and a 2000 soon to be 2001 x-fly with crossmax's and race face cranks/bb stem seatpost and an easton ct2 1" riser bar
Bottom Line:for a racing tire this are super good, you don't have to be super smooth and gently brake with one finger like you do with most other slicks ( mach ss/sk ). but they are a slick so you can't bomb the sickest technical trail on them and expect to ride it out every time. But for a racing tire or just something to school your buddies with they're good in there element. They realy ride a lot like a knobby in a lot of situations except on slippery wet technical sections, everywhere else they work fine. But I still prefer my tioga factory xc full knobby tires for the technical and dirty trails.

Strengths:- Fast...low rolling resistance
- Good side tread for cornering
- These perform best in tacky (but not wet) ground
Weaknesses:- A little slippery on really dry, dusty trails
- Even more slippery in the mud (duh)
Similar Products Used:IRC Pirannah Pros, WTB VelociRaptors, Continental Navigator Pro/Cross-country
Bike Setup:Seven Cycles Sola Ti, HeadShok Fatty Ultra DL, mostly Coda/XT/XTR parts
Bottom Line:These tires work great in most conditions (at least in Michigan). The trade-off for the low rolling resistance (these tires are *very* fast) is sketchy handling in really dry or really wet conditions. It's worth it, though! They're also nice for cross-over riding (off-road/road rides). I have a set on my single mountain bike, and also on our Cannondale tandem, and I'm very pleased with the performance. When they wear out, I'll replace 'em with the same tires.

Bottom Line:these tires suprised me very much. The work better than the Specialized team semi knob tires that came on the bike. They have a lot of cornering bite for sure, they work realy good for semi technical rides and when it gets wet and rideable they kick @ss. For fast trails with lots of leaning corners I use a mach ss on the front because it's better for fast trails but when it's slow with slow turns these tires rule.

Similar Products Used:Other Kevlar racing tires
Bike Setup:Xc Race bike
Bottom Line:I tried these tires last year for the first time preparing for the biggest stage race in Quebec: the "Raid Pierre Harvé" (300km in 3 days!). I must admit I was pleasantly surprised! They grip quite well, even in slightly loose stuff. The low rolling resistance really makes a difference, especially when you're in a 8 km fire road climb. They do their job well in making climbing easy! On the down side, I got a 1/2 inch slash in my rear tire on the first time out with them. I have a friend who also slashed his tire after just a few runs. Could the tires be that flimsy? I'll give Michelin the benefit of the doubt.

When you compare the weight of these tires to other semi-slicks, they really aren't anything that special. And the worst thing about them is that they cost 80$ canadian to replace!!!!!! I find this pretty steep for a tire this heavy.

Final word: They're still very good tires. But for that price I think I'm going to try something a bit lighter this year like Maxxis. In my book they get 2 flaming poutines for value and 3 poutines for performance. And by the way: If you don't know what a Poutine is it's time you visited Quebec!

Strengths:I have had no problems with the tires for 2.5 years.. Lots of both off and on road riding, probably close to 2000 miles total.. Used for commuting and for racing, with out changing tires. Excellent tires until you hit really loose or muddy conditions, takes some getting used too
Weaknesses:front end washes out in loose conditions, and in mud..
Similar Products Used:other semi slicks, dunno which ones, too long ago..
Bike Setup:'98 full sus. fisher w/ XT components, mavic rims,
Bottom Line:Excellent tire. I have only had one flat, this spring, after using them for two years. I have switched to just using michelin tires - mostly the sprints for training and most xcountry riding, unles I know it is a really loose or muddy trail, then I switch to my HOT S tires.. Grren, to red. Changing them is cake, ya just gotta get used to them. Ohh yeah, for the ppl who have said they puncture easily on the streets, I've put over 1300 road miles on them.. NO FLATS! two years w/out changing the tubes either... Great tires! I've gotta give them five flamin' turds! At 33$ a tire, who can argue? If you plan to ride you ATB on and off road (you;d rather invest more $$ in it than to buy a road bike), GET THESE TIRES!

Bottom Line:I knew that these semi-slicks would be fast and smooth, but I never expected them to perform as well as treaded tires in the adverse conditions. I've ridden these through almost every condition that exists, I think, and can't find any place that my deep treaded tires did better. I'm almost convinced that these do better in some of the steep climbs where traction is on the edge of breaking out. Even braking on steep loose technical downhill was as good. Ok, so what about steering on a highspeed corner in dirt? Same result. They seem to go defy logic. No down side, only the upside of faster, much faster. I've considered the possibility that deeply treaded tires actually have less surface area connecting with the ground and therefore maybe thats why these have so much relative traction. Reminds my of those earlier days of tractor pulls. Remember when those things had the huge deep treaded tires? Then somebody reasoned (with a chainsaw) that less deep tread might result in less decent down into the mud and sure enough it worked and that became the design. Don't know if this is similiar or not, but these are impressive. I got them for $11.99 through Performance so the value is obvious.

On dry, hardpack dirt, these tires absolutely fly, uphill and down. The compromise for all this speed is felt in the corners, so approach that delicious, sweeping fire road with caution. Compared to my standard off-road knobbies (IRC Mythos XC's) the Slicks have a tendency to drift, and let go very quickly. Ouch.

I bought it for 19 bucks at Performance, so I bought another one because I liked it so much and the summer weather has been so good and dry. I know all you racers (I am one too) will say that they are a race tire and not designed for that usage, but really, a tire should be more versatile than that. Aniway, now I am very dissatisfied. I do not think to have more than 250 km done with these tires. The rear tire now has a gash that cause me 2 flats before I find it. I had to glue a rubber patch on the inside to be able to use it again but I see it will not last. I found yesterday that the front tire is developping a bulge where you can see the thread.

But anyway, if a tire is built for hardpack/pavement, it seems to me that they should ride smoother on turns and be able to handle the dirt and gravel that you see when you ride on the road. They should be able to do these conditions with higher pressures that are used on the hard stuff: at least 60 lbs. And your not going to cut in to hardpack, so a narrower size than 1.95 is needed. I busted my ass like 3 times on these, and I'm no wanna-be. Also, the Sprints are not very responsive, even at lower pressures.
It's like Michelin took a big carcass knobby and tried to make a hardpack tire, but left the mud knobbies on the edges. DUH!
You want a REAL kick-ass semi-- check out the Geax Hubi or Revert. These RULE. They may be a little harder to find, but they're well worth it. Forget about the rest, they're pretenders. The Michelin's don't deserve their high average rating, in my opinion, when you got tires like the Geax's out there. Save yourself alot of hassle and check geax.com/preview.

Strengths:
Low rolling resistance on the street
Weaknesses:
Not the same grab as a full knobby, but what should I expect from a tire that has no tread in the center!?!
Bike Setup:
K2 full suspension
Bottom Line:A lot less rolling resistance than the knobbies that I used before. I ride on the street as much as I do off road. My off road requirements are not severe so why fight those knobbies when I am on the street. Very light and they really grip when you lay them over in a corner. Performance had them on sale a couple of months ago for only $11.99 and I think their regular price is $19.99. Not bad for such a great tire.

Bottom Line:I've only ridden these tires a few times and I have no complaints about them yet, they grip awesome on anything compared to all the others I've tried. They give you the grip and confidence that you need to rip up any descent not like any of the others I've tried, yet they don't sacrifice weight of rolling resistance. Honestly I think these are the best tires I've ever ridden, they will do anything you want them too. They are so fast and good gripping in many conditions. even thought the green might not look the best on all the bikes we may own, these tires work better than all the tires that come on the bikes we own. If you want a fast awesome gripping tire the michelin sprints are the ones for you. But remember they are a semi slick but they don't perform like on in many conditions or types of trails. ( they work better than the specialized team dirt and control semi knob tires that came on my bike, in any type of riding these even school in technicla riding )

All I have to say, is they take some practice to ride. After forcing myself to ride them for a few months, they are the only tires I will use. Yeah they suffer when it gets wet, but if your having that tought of a time, you probally just suck as a rider anyway and that will continue to be the case no matter what tire you use. And I thought I was the only person who had a hard time putting the Sprints on my rims. The trick I found out was to put one side on the rim, lay it down on your lap, the loose side up, then starting on the far end, hands moving away from each other on the rim, work around the rim, using the bottom of your forearms and elbows to hold the tire down near you, then when youre about 2/3rd thru, quickly stand up, moving your hands on the tire, keeping the tension on the bead, and moving hte tire vertical, so that the rim will weigh down on the bead, and then work upwards on the last part. now i can change the sprints just as fast as a regular tire. (takes pratice, but it could save precious time in a race)as for the tire, its still going great. muddy season is on us, and i probably will be trying them out to see how they perform.

One thing is, they perform magnifricently in sandy beach conditions and also rocky single track stuff. My only problem is that to change the bloody things, you have to have 4 arms. They are slightly bigger than the average tire and you have to plead with them to stay on the rim while you position everything. But....mess around and use care and no doubt you have the best damn cross country\hard pack rubber come silicone that you could ever imagine. Honestly, they are the most fastest and durable tire on the market.......

I've only run this tire on the front (2.1 - nice and cushy for descents) and I love it so far. Good stuff: light, fast, nice trail feel, green, and so far wearing pretty well. Even though the silicummy stuff is soft and sticky for traction, rocky stuff and pavement don't seem to wear too fast. Behaves like a slick in front, i.e. lower traction middle of tread in turns, but substantial side knobs keep things in control. Like all slicks, I believe you can definitely wash-out going faster in turns, but I've learned to keep it in control there (I ride pretty loose and crazy and as fast as I can). I wouldn't try running it in back except on predictable hardpack, or at least not on rides with steeper, loose and rocky climbs like the Wissahickon Park in Philly where I've been riding. Before riding there I had kept a Revolt SS on my rear for several months and I've experienced the difficulty of climbing that kind of stuff with a slick. And even though it's taken abuse and scraps in front, I don't think the Sprint was made to take the abuse of bouncing down rock fields with the rider's weight and braking. But if it wasnt' for the climbs, I'd sure like to try!Great tire for good to ok conditions. Good price at most places too!

Those tires came standard on my Homegrown Factory XT, and when I first hauled it out to Avalon, my biking buddies pointed and giggled, green and slick? good luck on the soft stuffi was thinking the same thing, and I even had bought Wildgripper Lites to swap on, but I wanted to try the Sprints first. And well, they've performed way beyond my expectations. I rode on them for several months, and I've come to the conclusion that they roll faster, make it easier for me to tackle uphills and perform well in not-so-nominal situations. They spin on wet logs. Which is to be expected. So it helps you work on your log crossing technique. bump that handlebar forward! In mud, they feel sketchy, so you need to carefully power through, dont break them loose. Again, it teaches you technique. Most suprising tho, is its cornering ability. I'll be screaming down a hill, hit a curve, I'll apply braking power, and feel the back tire immediately break out, let go of the brake lever, and it just snaps back in line. Makes it more fun, actually, dancing on the edge. As for durability. They're pretty soft, my rear tire doesnt even have the small diamonds down the middle anymore. just little bumps. Thats with mabye around 300 miles on it. The Lites on my ohter bike tore pretty easy when my brother smacked a curb, and I had to trash it. But I nailed a rock with the front tire going down a hill, which was hard enough to blow the tube, put a good dent in my rim, however the tire didnt show any ill effect. So, the other posts about the tire's resistance to tearing, I still dont know whether its any worse than other tires. When mud season comes up, I'll be putting on new tires.. probably those new Wildgripper Comps. They're a compromise between the Sprints and Lites.

Being a fairly dry spring, and because my first rides this year were on fire roads, and exposed single-track, I got a good idea of how this tire worked in dry conditions. In hardpack, they always seem to work well, failing occasionally when I would do out of saddle sprints. In loose dirt and gravel, they would have trouble gripping when my rear wheel wasn't fully weighted, and also when I tried to do out of saddle sprints. I mastered these problems through knowing when they would not work, and I felt confident enough to race them (thats what the pros have been doing.)
I barley finished all my laps at Canada Cup #2 because once these tires get a little wet, they dont stay in one place. I found slowing difficult, and stopping immpossible because of all the slipping that they do.
I dont like having to hope that there wont be any wetspots on the trail, and I dont have the time to change my tires according to the ride I go on.
I also realized that the deep slits on top of the little nobbies will be full of small flakes of gravel by the end of a ride.
Unless you live somewhere that never has wet singletrack, dont care about winning races, never undertake in out of saddle sprints with your buddies, have the time time to pick gravel out of your tires, or have the time to change your tires before each ride, dont buy these things.

Difficult to say with these. If you stay within the limits of these tires
they are great fun. They climb like mad on *anything* and are definitely
worth a gear or more. Just stay seated and up you go: mud, sand, roots, rocks,
gravel. No problems. Technical single-track is also no problem if you're
delicate. Wet roots require some finesse, but the tires are surprisingly
grippy. Fast downhills, for me, were a nightmare though. Anything but
hardpack and the front washed out. For my riding style, I couldn't run
sprints on the front and back. With just a Sprint on the back and something
meaty up front (oooh... nice fashion statement mixing colours) it's the
best of both worlds, as almost all the rolling resistance is at the back,
and all the turning and stopping happens up front. Run this combo and I'll
give it about 4, with some additional demerits for fragile sidewalls;
I have a few cuts, but no flats yet.
