(full suspension) | | Bottom Line: | With Nashbar selling these for $10, I figured I'd give them a try, since this winter has been a pain for riding - the fourth snowiest winter in over 100 years. The Mud Mad tires have better traction in the snow than the Nokians I usually use for winter ice riding, and are much better in the soft soil and marshy mud between the snow patches, as winter finally fades.
I don't have to worry so much about tearing up the tree roots with these tires, although the downside is that they slip on the roots a bit more then the Nokians. I was amazed to find myself riding up very steep slopes without spinning the tires, in places where I often lose traction in loose soil in dry weather. With a good grip on the ground, I'm not contributing to the erosion of the trails as much as if my tires were spinning.
I just finished thirty miles riding through melting snow and ice, standing and flowing water everywhere, wet leaves, wet sand, marshy mud, etc., and I was very impressed with the traction and ability to keep going everywhere except the deepest snow drifts.
I can't say how they will do in sticky clay-based mud, since we don't have much of that in New England.
The DH model is probably stronger and heavier than the regular Mud Mad, and I would probably recommend the regular for most trail-riding purposes, if the price is the same. For my adventure-style riding, I think the DH version will be more thorn-resistant, so I may be using them again in the fall for riding over the rough mowed fields and brambles.

Too cheap to buy new tires till I wear these out. The first 1/4 of the tread came off pretty quickly but they still have 1/2 the knobby left after riding mainly on hard pack and pavement.(very noisy on pavement and rough) Not good for cornering at all...but that's not what they are made for. Michelin DH Mud | | Bike Setup: | Bullit, Boxxers Discs | | Bottom Line: | These tyres are great, they are ultra grippy in the mud, and not so bad on everything else. \the main problem with spikes etc is that as soon as you hit anything harder than water, they squirm like a b******d. IRC have got around this by using flat knobbles on these tyres, which allow enough rubber to hit the ground to keep you going over the hard stuff. The knobbles are well spaced so mud clearance is not a problem. Another review says they should be wider - well maybe, maybe not. too wide and theyed sit on the mud like a baloon, I reckon they are spot on in terms of size. Puncture resistant kevlar beaded casings make em tough and easy to use, just dont run them too low pressure or they'll fall off the rim (a fault of kevlar tyres - not just mud mads) having said that, why would you run these soft? they are meant to run at a reasonable pressure, thats when they work best.
All in all the best tyres I have - ok they are 60 quid a pair, and you can only really use them in the mud, but if you want good mud tyres, you are going to have to have more than 1 set of tyres. They do EXACTLY what thy claim, and a little more,so I reckon these should be in your garage ready for next winter. (Or next week for those of us in the UK). | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |
