Favorite Trail:own
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $35.00
Purchased At:on-line
Strengths:appearance, well machined, hand friendly
Weaknesses:salsa graphics wear off easily, plastic pieces decrease clamping ability
Similar Products Used:hope, ringle, xtr
Bike Setup:Salsa big mama
Bottom Line:Bought these because my hopes didn't match new frame and it's a Salsa. Nice but plasic decreases quality and clamping force quite a bit because it deforms when clamped tight, Where salsa uses plastic Hope uses brass. I would not buy again and go for Hopes.

Date Reviewed: December 7, 2008
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Good looks
Weaknesses:Don't seem to be grippy enough.
Bike Setup:rigid 29er singlespeed with horizontal drops and disc brakes.
Bottom Line:So I've been using these for around a year. They seemed fine but I've always felt they were a bit hard to close. Not a big deal but more recently other issues have arrisen. I've noticed after longer rides my front skewer would have loosened up to where I question my safety. I haven't noticed this while riding yet though, only when I'd be removing the wheel to drive it home.

The rear skewer just doesn't seem to be able to squeeze tight enough or be gnarly enough to grip the frame because when I lock my rear wheel up it will try to push out of the drops. I have a chain tug on the drive side so it doens't pull forward but with the forces caused by the disc brakes it tries to jump out of the drop outs. I plan on changing to XT skewers to see if they can hold the frame better otherwise I don't know. The problem has only happened when I'm locking down the back wheel though(as in to skid).

Favorite Trail:Skeggs
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $45.00
Strengths:Great products. Will last forever. Best seat clamps.
Weaknesses:Lube often. Certain types of trail dust causes QRs to creak. And after time, sounds like your bottom bracket is giving way or you pivot points are shot. Own several pair and have replaced them with XTR, Mavic, etc. and no more creaking. Watch out for mis-stamps on some skewers - once in a while you will find one with no teeth, just a smooth surface that doesn't grip the dropout very well. Salsa will replace for free.
Similar Products Used:XTR, Mavic, Rolf, Campy, etc.
Bike Setup:Custom Ellsworth, Enduro SL, Fuel 98, 8500 hardtail.
Bottom Line:The QR's work great on the BOB Revolution stroller! Get 2 seatpost QR levers for the rear wheels and a front QR for the front wheel. One sick looking stroller that baby is proud to ride in.

Bike Setup:Obscenely tarted up GT Zaskar
Bottom Line:Like buying your wife another pair of Jimmy Choo's. Not really necessary, but if you can afford it you'll show your bike how much you love it.

And it will p*ss your other half off immensely if you get these instead of treating her to something new. Which is no bad thing.

Weaknesses:the white letters get smudged up quickly...price maybe.
Similar Products Used:rolf, mavics original skewers
Bike Setup:trek 8500, xtr, propels, C king, thompsons, trailblaster 1.8. and 03 Psylo SL
Bottom Line:I have 2 sets of these, black ti on trek and the red ti on Ells ID. matches the paint scheme on both bikes. Easiest to operate from a bunch of other skewer sets. Only one can be compared is the old school xtr. I found a way to get rid of the dirt on the etched in letter("salsa") - spray some wd40 on a rag and wipe off carefully. this method also worked on the anodized finish on my ID to get rid of dirt on lettering.

Date Reviewed: October 24, 2003
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Works great, a perfect replacement for the finicky skewers that come with Mavic Crossmax wheels. Smooth open/close action, lightweight, and look pretty good.
Weaknesses:Adjustment knob is a bit big to turn under larger forks like Fox and the large flip lever can crash into the bottom of the fork as well. Finish is a bit raw.
Similar Products Used:Shimano, Mavic
Bike Setup:Truth/F100x/Crossmax
Bottom Line:No real complaints, pretty much does what I expected and work way better than the jerky feeling stock Mavic skewers and lighter weight to boot.

I've also had no problems with the stock Shimano skewers, they both work well. The Salsa's are bulkier than Shimano, the lever and knob are longer/bigger. This promotes more leverage and easier unmounting, but if you're not careful, the lever can crash into the bottom of your fork and chip off paint.

Just the same, for an aftermarket skewer, it's top notch.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:JensonUSA.com
Strengths:Easy open, easy close. Work every time. Lightweight and high quality.
Weaknesses:None so far - except when running with disc brakes it is a bit of a pain getting the alignment right everytime.
Bottom Line:This is actually a review of the Salsa skewers paired with 1UpUSA's "QuickNuts." Since there is no review section for the QuickNuts (are you listening MTBR? QuickNuts is a great tool for disc brake users!), I am going to review both here.

The Salsa skewers by themselves are a great set. I have them both in CroMo versions and they do their job as advertised. However, they share a shortcoming with ALL skewers out there when used with disc wheels. You have to play the guessing game everytime you set up you wheels in terms of how tight you want them because the alignment of the rotors is always a bit off. The ingenious QuickNut system takes the guess work out of the whole process.

Bottom line, the Salsa skewers are very good, and pairing them with the QuickNuts makes them a great combo. A must for any disc brake user.

Bottom Line:This is the third bike that I have transfered the skewers to, they are the sh1t!!! They lock very easily and are very light not to mention the cool colors and ergonomics! If it weren't for the cost, I would think that this is the best low dollar upgrade you can make.

Bike Setup:sweet sweet sweet
Bottom Line:These are skewers for crying out loud, but since I am on a review rampage, might as well add my two words. These look sweet, you know what the say, the little things make all the difference. They open and close much easier than my old shimano skewers did, which is nice since I don't have a bike rack so my bike rides in the trunk. Another plus is the fact that the set of these is composed of Cr-Mo shaft in the front skewer and Ti shaft in rear. Front for strength since there is big, mean shock there, and rear to satisfy the weight conscious me. Overall, skewers are just skewers and if you have any extra money you're itching to spend, get the Salsa skewers, and if you don't, don't bother. You'll gain very little from these.

Bottom Line:I don't remember exactly when I purchased these skewers, but the fact that they are "purple anodized" might give an indication... I love the way the Salsa products look and hold up. I definately will buy new Salsa skewers when these finally turn to dust and fall off my bike. No complaints, they hold my wheels on just fine. They are, however, just skewers. Strengths:Easy to remove the front tire
Weaknesses:Price
Similar Products Used:Shimano, Bontrager
Bottom Line:In my opinion a skewer is a skewer. If it holds the wheels on I'm happy. If it's light even better.

Where these excel over Shimano is in wheel removal. I have to pull the front wheel off fairly often to get my bike on my roof rack. When removing Shimano QRs the lever side of the skewer can't be turned due to making contact with the front shock. The securing nut has to be turned by hand. The Salsa (the Bontrager also) has the clearence to rotate. It makes removal and installation much easier.

You couldn't ask for a better skewer. But is it worth the bucks?

Similar Products Used:Shimano, Ringle
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight
Bottom Line:No problems with the skewers. The delron shims must be lightly lubed occassionally to keep smooth opening performance. The springs have gotten a bit bent and distorted. I got the silver colored skewers, and as expected, after being crashed and scraped on the gravel they still look pristine. Silver is really the best color to go with if you want a bike to continue looking new and uncrashed after you've OTB'd a few times.

The lever tends to spin even when clamped.
Hard to open when they are clamped down tight.

Bottom Line:These things cost a good bit of money for something that just isn't holding up. The bolt on my front skewer unthreaded from the handle side. The plastic piece under the lever gets torn up when you don't have the lever lined up just right (its not hard to get it out of wack). These work ok on the rear where you don't have to adjust them so much. Clearing the layer tabs on the front takes its toll on these. I'll be looking for some other skewers here real soon. Bike Setup:A full-custom setup with every cutsie-pooh thing you can think of.
Bottom Line:I got these because more generic-looking stuff didn't look right when surrounded by all the goochie megamoney junk I got. Would you put Shimano QRs on your King hubs? I think not. Granted most other QRs work fine, but some things you just get because they're appropriate for everything else you have. It has nothing to do with the fact that they're lighter and better designed than anything else on the market, does it? I mean, what kind of world would we live in?
The real problem with mountain biking is the amount of ego that "hardcore" (i.e.-poser) riders continue to display that pre-alienates potential biking converts before they ever come to understand the wonderful, even spiritual experiences that responsible riding has to offer. Even though the majority of riders are really not that bad, it is the 10-25% of the egotistical riders that make the most lasting impressions on everyone else. I see too many such riders, and what is so interesting is that they tend to be the ones that have the most to learn.
Ride because you enjoy it. Pick the speed you are able to go, or desire to go, and be secure with it. Do not feed into (or beat-down) the insecurity of other riders. Respect other trail users, and realize that ability, fitness, or the bike you're on does not change who has right of way. Yield to people coming uphill, but don't necessarily demand right of way from everyone coming down, particularly in sketchy areas that are difficult to stop in. Be polite. Compliment people once in a while: "Wow, those are nice QRs!"
I remember one time I was coming downhill while someone else was coming up at a decent pace. Although I stopped in plenty of time, I had nowhere to move my bike to give him a polite amount of space. He stormed by, grumbling something that I didn't bother listening to, and then promptly endoed onto a bridge. I watched him flop on his back, not sure whether to laugh or be concerned. My point is there's a fine line between racer and poser. Aspiring too much for one may get you awfully close to the other. And I don't think that guy was using Salsa QRs, either.

Rubbed off the anodizing just changing the tire -- that seemed kind of cheesy. There are just as functional skewers for less money. The rear skewer was actually a bit long so I lopped it off with a hack saw as they suggested -- never had to do that before, and considering that 135mm rear axle is standard, I don't understand why they couldn't just make it the right length to begin with...

Spend your money well... if you're crazy enough to spend around $40 or more on bloody skewers (I was hypnotized by Salsa coolness), get chromoly or steel axels.

All said, these Salsas possess all the qualities of a great skewer: easy to use, ergonomic, lightweight, good grip, wicked looks (thanks to an awesome color selection). The one problem I do have with it is that opening the front clamp all the way puts the lever nearly parallel with the wheel that rotating the lever invariably knocks it against the admittedly fat fork legs of my Marzocchi z2 fork.

However, over the course of a year, the rear skewer has bent...to the point where I can't use it anymore. And...my seat clamp skewer has bent as well. My seat post kept slipping...forcing me to crank the skewer tighter and tighter...and now it's bent.

Salsa makes good stuff...and their skewers are beautiful and the lightest on the market. But that's a moot point if the product fails you. I'm going against the general consensus and giving Salsa skewers 2 chilis...but probably more deserving on 1. bummer.

Bottom Line:I agree with the previous posting that sometime things are overlooked that can cause a huge affect on your ride such as quick release for the wheels and seatpost. I recently purchase the Salsa QR for the wheels and seatpost. The QR for the wheels where just to good of a deal to pass ( $20 New ) while the seatpost clamp was mandatory ( $20 used ). I kept having problems with the seatpost sliding down throughout a ride because I was not able to provide enough leverage to tighten the QR. The Salsa, with the bolt on one side, has almost eliminated this problem however I'm still in my test phase. The QR for both the seatpost and wheel feel real nice when using and are of decent weight. I would recommend these to anyone who is upgrading their bikes.

Similar Products Used:Shimano
Bottom Line:it's difficult to review a small and overlooked part as a skewer. All i can vouch for is it is easy to put on and remove the whell, and it looks great. it is reasonably light, but that's negligible. you don't need light things in the center of the wheel, the most important parts to make light are the rims/tubes/tires. A small thing like a skewer set wont make much of a difference to the overall performance of the bike. The trimming issue isn't exactaly a weakness, it works fine and isn't very sharp/dangerous untrimmed, at least with My wheel spacing. if the shaft protrudes beyond the derailleur bolt, i would suggest trimming it; ripping a big hole in your achilles tendon in a hasty dimount because you were too lazy to trim your skewer shaft would be a pity. 5 nuclear piles for a great wheel-holder-onner.

It's nice to see them in a subdued pewter color too... not everybody wants to be a neon billboard. On that same note I wish they didn't have to put such a huge logo on the lever. Got the rasta skewers for my King Hubs and they look high speed sure enough. However I am concerned about the rear skewer being Ti.... I do ride pretty smooth and dont jump but I do weigh 2 bills. I have heard that these are better than the Kore's. I give four chili's due to unknown longevity but look trick.

I bought the Ti skewers used about 3 years ago. Nice design. You can really get alot of leverage without much effort. However, my rear skewer broke during a race last week. Bent the rear hanger & almost destroyed my rear derailleur. I'm going cro-mo next. It's just not worth it to shave off a few grams only to have your equipment fail you in the middle of a race. Durability should always come first. 3 peppers for lack thereof.

I had the Rasta QR's and had one brake right at the pivot. Maybe Salsa should use a bigger rod since there seems to be enough room. I will be looking for bigger rods on the next set I get- Dissatisfied!

You'll be happy you got these skewers. Very functional, light, neat looking, well made, satisfying. I got green. I'm getting magenta ones for my friend, she'll flip. These are the ones to get. You won't be sorry. When you put em on you'll be happy all the time and much faster, quicker, braver and stronger. It's a miracle what these Salsa skewers do for you, they really bring in the chicks, they're better for your head than XTR,the Kore Elite seatpost, Syncros Cattlehead stem or titanium garden tools. Invest in yourself!

These are nice skewers. I have the ti version and they work great. The long levers allow for tons of clamping force. They also look great too.

I ride my rasta ones on my DH bike and I love them. I never have to think about them and I think that this is the best part. They work flawlessly. Pretty colors too. They really spice up the look of your bike

Finally a product that combines the culmination of decades of cold war research with the production capabilities of underdeveloped nations! Salsa skewers are the genetically engineered tomato on the salad of the global villiage.

The absolute best in' skewers!! Nothing feels, looks, or moves as nice, and they out-clamp shimano skewers.

They're light, they work well, and they are attractive without looking outlandish. And to top it all off, Salsa is just such a cool company.

The rasta colored Salsas are sweet, smooth, and light. I chose these over the Kore, which are also pretty trick, because of the feel and the curve and the colors.

The best recomendation I can give these skewers, is that I've been running them on my mtb's (and a road bike) for the last four years. They are light, work incredibly smoothly, come in some great colors and are made by a soul-daddy company. They are standard equipment on my bike. They seem to be getting alot cheaper as well!

I bought a new set of Salsa (suspension) skewers when I got a set of Spins. These are light (due to the rear titanium) and look excellent. I got the gold color set. I like the action on the cam. It locks in well. I would give them a 5 for the weight, looks, and how it works but drop one because they are very expensive. If you've got the cash, these are the ones to get.

The Salsa Flipoff skewers have a nice anatomical shaped handle and work very
well. I used a bunch of skewers and these seam to be the best. Actually the
stock Shiman skewers work better than most but weigh 40 grams more than the
flipoffs.

Just like they say in the Magazines: these things are smooth!
I have the suspension set: one Ti in the rear, and a steel in front. Not much to say except they look great, are fairly light, very functional, and did I mention how great they look??
