MTB cross-country riders and racers will appreciate the lightweight performance of this tough Maxtal SUP welded rim with double eyelets. Maxtal rim is 30% stronger than a 6106 aluminum rim. SUP means the rim joint is arc welded, then milled by digitally controlled machines for high resistance; no visible joint means clean braking. Ceramic technology reduces heat on the rim, provides resistance to wear, and reduces braking distances by 20% in dry weather and 50% in wet. CD adonization technology reinforces the oxide layer that forms on the aluminum profile surface for a greater micro hardness and resistance to wear. With UB Control, the sidewalls of the rim are milled on digitally controlled machines for efficient braking.

Strengths: Keeps going, relatively light
Weaknesses: none whatsoever
Bottom Line:
Hei, this rim is really good. I am around 240 lbs most of the time (the rest over), and I ride xc, not too aggressively. I use hand built wheelsets only, the above were all put together by Whizz Wheels in Germany (tune Mig75es and Mag230es, 36holes/DT Competition spokes, I do NOT use the skewers from tune, but solid steel ones from Salsa, which have the same shine as the black tune hubs). There is where you get first rate hand built wheels that keep you going (something like that ominous "David" in US, I presume). The 517 rim was a bit flimsy for me, in comparision with the 521 one got the difference. The 618 is really just right for me, my weight and my style of riding. Never trued even once since I bought the wheels. The Ceramic stayed hithertoo where it should, braking properties still just right (the 521 Ceramic is a bit glossy now. In the wet these don't brake so well any more).
Favorite Trail: yes, absolutely, presumably to the nearest bear garden
Duration Product Used: More than 3 years
Purchased At: Whizz Wheels
Similar Products Used: Mavic 121 Ceramic, 521 Ceramic, 517 Ceramic.
Bike Setup: Hot Chili Zymotic Hardtail, Marzocchi Bomber 2001 (80mm, extra hard springs), Avid Brakes with green Cool Stop Chromium pads.

Strengths: Like others have said: the strength to weight ratio is attractive. I have used these on a Santa Cruz Heckler for hard XC, and a single speed for hard XC.
Weaknesses: No weaknesses that I can find. I have not used rim brakes, though. If you want to complain about chips in the surface...go ahead.
Bottom Line:
For HARD XC, I can't find any problems. You could go beefier for more strength...but unless you want to go to a freeride wheel, these are pretty tough for their weight. I didn't pay full price. I bought the wheelset pre-built off of EBAY, and basically got the rims, hubs, spokes, nipples, build...for free. If I were paying full price, I would think twice about them. There are probably other rims you could buy for less that would be just as strong, or serve the same purpose...
Bike Setup: Bianchi SASS, Marzocchi 100mm, CK headset and disc hubs, AVID mechanicals, ENO freewheel, hellbent titanium bars, OURY lock-ons...SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strengths: Strong, Not too heavy, Strong...
Weaknesses: none so far
Bottom Line:
After having to true 517s and Suns every couple of weeks regularly, i havent touched 618s for the first 3 months and thereafter every couple of months minor adjustments. I am 6ft, 210lb no fear XC rider and cant believe the abuse this rim will take without breaking the sweat. Ceramic coating is like new after one full season of biking that included 24 hours of adrenaline event.
great product. good job mavic...
couldnt go higher than 5 chilis... but it deserves more..
I've only had these rims for a short time but from all the riding I've done on them I am really impressed. After the pads were ridden a couple of times and the ceramic was smoothed out a bit the braking noise went away, at first they were pretty loud.
I was concerned that the coating was going to flake off, as per reviews of other ceramic rims, but after riding the spring slop up here in the Great White North there is no signs of and wear at all. The coting really stops brake surface scoring that you get on regular alloy rims. I've had a coule of harrowing dings that I was sure was going to leave a mark but nothing yet.
The wieght isn't anything to write home about. Not too heavy, but not feather weight either. I am 6'1" and 190 pounds and these rims have taken me places that would have tacoed the 221's for sure.
I love them for XC riding! If anyone has had troubles with them please email me at the above!

Strengths: Very strong, looks nice.
Weaknesses: Ceramic coating comes off!!! Heavier than uncoated version.
Bottom Line:
Great for its strength and relatively light. Hit a rock so hard that I had a snakebite and the rim was dented on one side but the wheel stayed true (Sapim spokes). I bet a X517 or 221 would have cracked.
The ceramic coating first became very smooth (should have cleaned it) and then flaked off when I rode some trails with big loose rocks. Actually I only bought them because my XT-Vs squealed like hell. Got Avids now and I'll buy the non-ceramic version in spring. My rims won't last longer than 2 years anyway, so what's the point in wasting money on a fancy coating? The Avids brake on any surface.

Strengths: Look great, double eylets provide responsive truing, ceramic benefits
Weaknesses: None yet
Bottom Line:
I am a pretty agressive no fear type of rider, I am 220lbs, 6'2"...so I need a rim that can handle the abuse. I laced this rim up and immediatly hit the trails...I tested it by riding some very rocky descents, 2-3 foot drops and some rocky climbs that thrashed other rims....this thing amazed me...after 3 months I have only had to tru it once and it was a very minor adjustment...I like to keep my rims very straight and I can tell that this rim will be keeping my truing maintenance to a bare minimum....No better rim for the money as far as I am concerned
This is in my opinion the absolute best cross country/enduro rim on the market. It is strong without packing on the weight, and it lasts a long time. Too bad not more riders know about it, and it's too bad that not everyone sells them.

Strengths: ceramic coating, built well
Weaknesses: nothing i can see yet
Bottom Line:
These rims came on a wheel set i got on ebay, mavic 618 rims, with Chris King dics hubs, I have taken these wheels off some pretty big drops, logs and rocks and still as true as they would be brand new.
these things rock. slightly heavier than the x517, but oh, so much stronger! noticably stiffer, very stable, and double eyelets allow much better buildability - and potentially better fatigue properties too.
brakes squeal like a mofo initially, but a good smearing with mud soon resolves that, and then you can settle in to thrashing these things silly. or at least, trying to. short of wilfull destruction, the x618 can handle anything i've thrown at them, and they're still true! love these rims.
Bike Setup: steel hard tail, shimano xt, michelin.

Strengths: Performance, durability, stiffness
Weaknesses: none
Bottom Line:
Good thing, even for a heavy rider. Definitely stiffer than the 217. Ceramic just is it, if you use rim brakes. Since I am rather heavy, I put low weight, but not ultra low weight things things on my bike, with preference of good function and durability. So I have had no problems at all, hitherto. Mavic's x618 match to this concept, as do the other two big Ms: Marzocchi and Magura. So if you want a reasoalby low weight rim with good long term function, you are o.k. with these x618Cs
Similar Products Used: Mavic 121 Ceramic, 521 Ceramic, 217 Ceramic

Strengths: they are indestructible but don't use them for DH
Weaknesses: What's this case for?
Bottom Line:
these wheels are strong, I do a 6 feet drop on a hardtail on flat and the wheels are always true, they are extreme cross country wheels. I loved them! they are simply the best. but not for the weightwatchers but there not too heavy. excuse my english I'm from Montréal
